Grigi. All walls were grey, grey all the pedestrian passages, the canteen, fork-lift drivers, all equipment was grey, the warehouse, dirty and grey was the foundry, the painting department, the mechanical department and also the tooling maintenance, offices were grey, even desks were grey, benches were also grey, but not only them. People was grey as well, workers were wearing dirty gowns and clean air suits. And ... Can you guess? Clothes were grey. Even plants were withered in that dirty and dusty place. Many workers in the factory worked with a lot of commitment and devotion, all day and overnight. They were struggling a lot and were doing their best to produce the best car wheels ever! This is what Speedline manufactured. small village of Venetian country, there was a mostly grey factory. As the years go by, this place become even gloomier and greyer and got worse and worse. People there was not trying to preserve their workplace, actually they were making it ever greyer! Not to mention offices! Here the white collars ever forgot switch on the lights or they turn on them when it was not necessary. Try to think to an April sunny morning, where the sun shine luminous after the long winter, could you imagine how much light can come inside from the office’s giant windows? That was not enough: they anyway turned on these cold artificial lights who spoiled the brilliant sunlight and they made everything more cold and ... grey. You could see everything in that place: waste was thrown on the floor or hidden under the tables, any bins for selective collection were available for workers! Bins were so few that just one tissue would have been enough to flip all the garbage. When it was cold, instead of wearing warm While you were washing your hands? Open taps, jumper and long socks, they came to work with slight t-shirts and canvas shoes and they also turn up the heat! From October to April the heat was highest in every rooms, it seems to be in some other continent. Also in the big room it was heated up the temperature at the maximum and if a door was unfortunately open, what did they do? Surely they turned up the heat until 26°. It was too exhausting to get up and close the door to keep the heat in. constantly current water and ... forgetful people who ever forgot open the tap. After that had a lunch in the canteen, workers put the plate in the appropriate food trolley. But most of them didn’t threw in the right bins plastic glasses and also paper napkins, they simply put the plate with waste on. When someone could throw the waste, he didn’t put it correctly. Often the act was simply to deprive the plate of waste as soon was possible, and put the waste in the first free bin. This was only to save the time. All was continuing in this way and Speedline was becoming a more and more grey and sad color. The days were spending in a slow and desolate way and people was pursuing their bad habits. As long as in a foggy winter morning, suddenly, the doorman who was on duty at the main gates saw in the fog some lights. Sono proprio belle, le hai mai viste?” 6 The fog was so thick that he had to come out from his kiosk with the torch to not crash into some pole or not get hit by a crazy fork-lift driver. He was all wrapped up and also a little bit annoyed of going out in this cold, so he proceed to the strange lights. “Oh! Who could be arrived so important to getting me out in this cold?” he thought to herself “Today I gladly would have been in bed!”. With his hand he was holding up his torch and he tried to rub his eyes redness for the grey smokes who came out from the factory. In that moment the lighted a strange grey and sparkly thing, it has got two giants and yellow eyes that made a photonic light. “For goodness’ sake!” exclaimed him while he was falling backwards and hitting his bottom on the freezing ground. “Who are you?” “Hi sir, I am Speed” said the grey thing with a metallic voice like robots. The doorman, increasingly convinced that he should have stayed warm in his bed on that morning, he woke up again in a hurry and he tried to forelock his uniform full of dust and dirt. “Um ... um” he said clearing his voice and puffing of the chest to feel bigger (you have to think that Speed was nearly double high than the doorman!). “I am Antony, the guardian of this place. So what are you doing here of all places?” “Nice to meet you, Antony! Well, while I was going back to my planet, In stumbled on a meteor and I retorted my wheels. The same wheels I use to run through the stars and ... I fell down there! Now I don’t know how to come back home without my wheels!” Mr. Antony opened his eyes wide: meteor? Stars? What is he talking about? “But but but... what are you talking about?! We’re in Tabina of S.Maria di Sala city, we’re so far from the stars and the meteors. However I like you, with your squeaking wheels. Tell me something more about you.” “Thank you Mr. Antony, you’re so polite. I’m Speed, I come from a very hot and particular planet. It is the closest one to the Sun, its name is Solfilo. Here you can find always sunny and it is very hot! That’s so why we are made of a very strong material named aluminum. Listen to me! (knock, knock, he was knocking with his metallic knuckles on his belly). When it is too hot, we have to go for a spin around the stars, in order to become a little bit cooler! They’re pretty, have you ever seen them?” 7 “No Speed, qua è così grigio e fumoso che anche di notte non riusciamo a vedere il cielo … e nemmeno le stelle!” “No Speed, unfortunately here is so grey and smoky that also during the night we cannot see the sky and ... also the stars!” Comunque – “What a shame Mr. Antony! If you want someday I may bring you for a spin around the stars, so you can see how beautiful these are. So – he said taking up the train of thought – sometimes we go for a run around the stars to get some fresh air and we move using this high-tech and resistant wheels, just like these drawn on your billboards! Yesterday evening, while I was going back to Solfilo, In stumbled on a meteor and I retorted both my wheels. Because of the big hurt I had a fall and a flight about almost 10 thousand light years, at an incredible speed! And I fell down on the field beside there.” Come ti senti?” “Oh oh Speed, that was quite a big flight? How do you feel now?” “I am well, Mr. Antony, What did happen was just a big fright. It was because when I opened my eyes … I haven’t seen anything. I immediately thought I was becoming blind or I was falling in a black hole. Then I closed them again, I counted until ten and I reopen them. Nothing yet. I whirled my head and … That’s it! Yeah, I saw some shy and distant lights. I just thought to heading out to that place: I needed to repair my wheels and to know how to return into the space. And ... Here I am!” “Perbacco giovane Speed, che gran bella avventura! Ma ... come possiamo aiutarti noi?” “By Jove young man Speed, what a great adventure! But … how can we help you?” 8 Speed ci pensò un po’ su. In effetti, come potevano aiutarlo? Speed thought about it for a while. In fact, how can they help him? He looked around trying to pick up some clues about how they could help him out. He saw a grey and smoked place, without any sunbeam.. the foggy and the smokes were so thick that no sunbeams can pass through them. He missed his hot and bright planet. What could have that place that it would come in a handy? He thought for a while and then.. found out! “Sure Speed, we manufacture those wheels and they’re made of the same aluminum with which you’re made! Many people here work in that halls to manufacture those wheels and then sell them to car manufacturers. We make them about different sized and type, we paint them also by different colors, depends on how they want”. “Listen to me, Mr. Antony, Are you manufacturing the wheels on the board, aren’t you? “Cosa sono le automobili?” disse Speed. “What are cars?” Speed said. “Beh, Speed, come posso spiegartelo ... vediamo ... ecco! “Well, Speed, how can I explain you this ... uhm ... okay! For us cars are as your little wheels ... we use them to move through our stars. They’re a really high tech robots who help us to move from place to place.” Speed era felicissimo e “So it’s wonderful!” Speed said “If you produce wheels and I’ve to repair my rickety ones. You could prepare me a pair of flaming wheels!” Speed was very happy and he was running up and down the parking standing on his hands: he had found the way to return on his planet! stava correndo su e giù per il parcheggio stando in piedi sulle mani: aveva trovato il modo per tornare sul suo pianeta! Meanwhile Mr. Antony was still thinking about how wonderful were the stars that he saw when he was child so he thought to help Speed to manufacture his new wheels… therefore Speed would show him again the stars, as he promised! Speed, in the meantime, gave up hopping and he watched Mr. Antony with his yellow and bright eyes, waiting for an answer. “Dear Speed, as I said you I like you so I decided I would help you! Come with me now, I bring you to our factory and we go to our workers for advice about how to repair your wheels.” Ti da fastidio la Mr. Antony turned around and he saw the light was going out in his yellow eyes, so he asked “Speed, what is happening? Mentre camminava si guardava attorno e passo dopo passo diventava sempre più triste. he turned around and he walked to the hall entrance. Speed, all shaky, started to follow Mr. Antony first to the driveway, then into the hall. While he was walking, he looked around himself and step by step he became increasingly sad. luce?” afraid of the light?!” “To tell the truth, yes Mr. Antony. I’m used to live on the sunshine, not on artificial light bulbs’ light. The artificial light get me sad and annoys my eyes. Did you never see sunshine?” “Difficile, caro Speed” rispose il Signor Antonio “la luce artificiale è molto più “Rarely, my Speed” answered Mr. Antony “Artificial light is more comfortable, it’s necessary only a click and it’s immediately turn on, it can also light you as long as you need!” comoda, basta un click ed è subito accesa e rimane ad illuminarti fin quando vuoi!” Speed silently thought that it was very bad, he remembered how fantastic was to be light from sunshine on his planet Solfilo. While he was thinking about the warm light of the sun he continued to look around him and he saw everywhere waste and dirt: bottled water on the ground, abandoned pickers on the tables, even a piece of halfeaten bread on the chair! He was walking and he was seeing the long faces of the workers and they also didn’t return the salute, they did not even looked at him. Nevertheless Speed understood: these men was sad for the reason why they hadn’t the sun light, indeed they lived constantly into mess and dirt. And he just had a plan! “Vieni Speed” disse il Signor Antonio “Questo With his head still pensive, Speed didn’t notice Mr. Antony was stopping and he was talking with another man with a grey uniform, full of grease and with a sad expression on his face. “Come here Speed” Mr. Antony said “This is Paul, one of our mechanical process men, he manufacture wheels with aluminum. He said that he would be glad to help you!” “Hi Paul, I’m Speed. Thanks for your help, you’re very kind!” “You’re welcome Speed, my pleasure. Let me see what’s happened to your wheels.” The very happy Speed, a little bit creaky, approached Paul. Then Speed sat down and Paul got some proper tools out from his toolbox to check Speed’s wheels. “Sono messe un po’ male queste ruote” disse Paolo, e Speed si fece triste triste “Ma non “This wheels are a bit in a bad state” Paul said, so Speed became sad “Don’t worry Speed! We’re the best in this work and we’ll make it right again in no time”. preoccuparti! Dopo quasi un’ora di lavoro, un sacco di bulloni e qualche chilo di alluminio, Paolo alzò la testa e disse “Ecco Speed kept the smile again in a while and then he watched Paul who was repairing the wheels. After almost one hour, a lot of bolts and some aluminum kilos, Paolo rose up his head and he said “Here Speed, abbiamo finito!” you are Speed, we’ve finished!” Can I try them?” Speed, who couldn’t wait to have a ride on his new flaming wheels, said. “Yes sir…” Paolo didn’t “Certamen...” Paolo non finish to answer him that Speed already started his ride. He was running like a devil up and down the hall, greeting all people who he met and he was running so fast that he also risked an accident with a forklift-driver! Before took it all out, he returned to Paul and mr. Antony to thank them. “Prima di andare, però” continuò Speed “voglio lasciarvi un regalo per ringraziarvi”. friends, you gave me a very important gift! Now I can come back to my friends and my family on my planet, Solfilo. Or, better yet, I can restart running through the stars!” ”Before I go”, he continued “I want to leave you a gift to thank you”. While he Mentre correva si era ricordato del piano a cui aveva pensato per far ritornare felici le persone della fabbrica e gli era venuta in mente un’idea: “Ho bisogno di 5 minuti, di was running he remembered of his plan whit whom he would give happiness to Speedline’s workers. He had an idea. “I need 5 minutes, one pen and a piece of cloth. A piece of paper is fine as well, then you can copy it if you prefer.” un pennarello nero e di un pezzo di stoffa. Mr. Antony retrieved the pen and the cloth (he found a piece of cloth in the old warehouse) and he gave them to Speed. So Speed shut himself up in the closet to prepare his gift. In the meantime many workers gathered close to Paolo and Mr. Antony to learn something more about Speedline to learn something more about Speed’s story. When Speed came back, he found them all together. “Perfect! I wanted to give all of you “Bene bene! Just one thing: make sure you will open it only after my departure!” This said he greeted Paolo and Mr. Antony again and he zoomed off to the sky, disappearing in the fog. Era una bandiera gialla, del colore del sole e sopra c’era scritto: Mr. Antony took Speed’s present and opened it in front of everyone. It was a yellow flag, the exact color of the sun, with written on it: 13 In un primo momento i lavoratori rimasero sbigottiti nel leggere queste regole: chissà come mai Speed aveva fatto proprio questo regalo? At first workers were astonished when reading those rules: why did Speed prepare this gift? Mr. Antony colleagues’ smiled and agreed and decided to hang the flag so that they would have seen it every day from that moment on. sporcizia dappertutto, ma stanze illuminate dal sole e capannoni in ordine! Tutte le persone stavano cambiando le loro abitudini: si coprivano per fronteggiare quelle gelide giornate invernali e, d’estate, everywhere, but rooms enlightened by the sunlight. Everyone as changing habits: they were wearing heavy jumpers to protect themselves from cold winter’s days and, during the summer, they were opening So Mr. Antony, noticing the surprise in his colleagues’ eyes, said “You see, dear friends, cari amici, Speed viene da un posto molto luminoso e colorato, quando è arrivato qui è diventato molto triste per tutto questo grigio e per la luce del sole che non c’è. Speed comes from a bright and colored place, and when he arrived here he became really sad for all this grey and for the hidden sunlight. I think that, with his gift, he wanted to give us some advices to improve our factory!” Non più grigiore e Months passed and the factory completely changed. Pensate che gli avevano persino dedicato una statua fatta tutta in alluminio! doors and windows to let the sunlight come in. Walking around the factory, you could see a lot of colored bins: yellow for paper, blue for plastic, green for organic waste and white for mixed garbage ... They learnt how to select waste! In bathrooms there were many banners inviting to save water: it’s a precious source, let’s shut up tabs when they are not needed! And what about the canteen? You should see how it shines! Empty trays and waste at the right place! And workers? They were smiling and greeting each others. Working in a clean environment was cheering them up! It was nice to know that everyone was collaborating for the same project, with the shared purpose to improve everyone’s life and, in the end, the whole Speedline. Speedline was grateful to Speed for the present he left to everyone. They even built up a statue dedicated to him! Yellow eyes and with the same wheels they made for him! In Tabina di S. Maria di Sala everything became prettier and the sad and grey times without the sunlight were already a forgotten memory. It was summer and the sunlight was flooding each and every corner and face. One of those days, Mr. Antonio was on the porch with his children, enjoying the cool summer night’s breeze. It was a while since Speed fell down in front of the factory with his innovative spirit. He sighed, thinking about Speed wandering through the starts to get some fresh air. “Dad, dad, look!” shouted the children looking at the sky and jumping like crazy.
