Obiettivi formativi: Acquisizione di una buona conoscenza dei lineamenti della storia della
letteratura e della cultura inglese dalla Restaurazione (1660) al Romanticismo (1830) nonché di
competenze relative alla comprensione e all’analisi critica dei fenomeni letterari di questo periodo
in una dimensione storico-culturale. Lo studente acquisirà inoltre una buona competenza relativa
alle metodologie di analisi e della ricerca critico-letteraria e filologica, attraverso lo studio di testi
con approfondimento degli aspetti tematici, formali, intertestuali e intermediali, nonché
conoscenze approfondite e aggiornate sul dibattito teorico-metodologico e la capacità di
argomentare in forma critica sui temi e le problematiche trattate.
Programma del corso: Il corso intende offrire un panorama del percorso letterario inglese nell’arco
di tempo sopra specificato attraverso la lettura di testi appartenenti a vari generi letterari di alcuni
autori rappresentativi del canone inglese. Si approfondiranno tematiche, contesti e strategie
narrative secondo un taglio interpretativo mirante a far emergere la riflessione culturale sulla
donna e i percorsi di costruzione e di rappresentazione di varie tipologie di personaggio
femminile. Maschile/femminile, interiorità/esteriorità, pubblico/privato, identità/alterità,
indipendenza/schiavitù saranno alcuni dei binomi presi in considerazione con l’approccio degli
studi culturali e di genere nell’analisi dei testi proposti.

ENGLISH VERSION
Aims: Students will develop a good knowledge of English literature and culture from the
Restoration (1660) to Romanticism (1830). The course will introduce students to the most
significant critical approaches of literary theory with particular emphasis on the specificities of
literary language and on the intertextual, intermedial, intercultural aspects of a good range of
literary texts. Students will develop an ability to critically engage with literary works and their
cultural and historical contexts.
Programme: This course provides an overview of English literature through the study of a variety
of texts by some of the most representative authors of the British canon. The course will focus on
topics, contexts and textual strategies with a view to underlining the cultural reflection on women
and how female characters have been thought out and represented in different literary genres.
Particular attention will be devoted, with the approaches defined by cultural and gender studies,
to binary oppositions such as male/female, interiority/exteriority, public/private,
identity/otherness, freedom/slavery, etc..
