lla Spezia non si trovano i soldi 250 mila euro - per restaurare la
statua equestre dedicata a Giuseppe Garibaldi, offesa dal tempo e dall’incuria. E alla vigilia dei 150 anni dell’unità d’Italia, il sindaco Massimo
Federici ha lanciato un appello alla Regione perché finanzi l’intervento e renda
meno traballante la postura del generale
che è diventato con la spada sguainata
l’icona più amata della città. Il governatore Claudio Burlando non ha fatto orecchie da mercante al grido di dolore degli
spezzini che ora attendono lo stanziamento per procedere ai lavori. Nel frattempo sotto l’equino rampante è stata
piazzata una struttura metallica di sostegno.
Il cavallo montato da Garibaldi ha una
sua nobiltà artistica riconosciuta dagli
esperti. Si contano infatti sulle dita di
una mano, in Italia, i monumenti equestri realizzati con le zampe anteriori che
mulinano nell’aria, come quello che domina i giardini di Spezia: una scultura dinamica che richiede calcoli difficili per
dare equilibrio a volumi così compositi.

alla Spezia era arrivato dopo lo scontro
dell’Aspromonte del 29 agosto1862. Quel
giorno, sull’Aspromonte, ad aspettarlo
c’era il Sesto Battaglione Bersaglieri al
comando del colonnello Pallavicini di
Triora che aveva il compito di bloccare la
sua avanzata sulla capitale al grido “O
Roma o morte”. E per ironia della sorte
era stato un tenentino di Castelnuovo
Magra, in provincia della Spezia, tal Luigi Ferrari, di 34 anni, a esplodere il proiettile che aveva ferito alla gamba destra
il generale. Ferrari vantava un curriculum
ricco di episodi gloriosi e di medaglie, si
era messo in evidenza soprattutto nella
battaglia di San Martino (1859) e nella
lotta al brigantaggio, ma non poteva
certo immaginare che sarebbe toccato a
lui impallinare l’eroe che giganteggiava
nell’immaginario degli italiani. Quel giorno aveva estratto il suo revolver d’ordinanza, un Lefaucheux calibro 12, e aveva colpito il riottoso generale al malleolo
del piede destro. Decretando così la fine
dello scontro fratricida.
Garibaldi, ferito, fu trasportato prigioniero al forte di Varignano, tra La Spezia e
Portovenere, dove oggi si addestrano gli
arditi incursori, corpo speciale della Marina Militare. Durante quella permanenza, che durò alcune settimane, ricevette
molte visite tra cui quella di Giuseppe
Mazzini, ricercato dalle polizie di mezza
Europa. Mazzini si travestì da donna e si
fece portare al Varignano da un vetturino di Spezia per abbracciarlo
e per parlare con lui.

The Thousand’s leader arrived in La Spezia
after the Aspromonte battle of 29th
August 1862. On that day the Bersaglieri
Sixth Battalion was waiting for him on
the Aspromonte. They were led by the
colonel Pallavicini di Triora, who had the
task of blocking his advance on the
capital to the cry of “O Roma o morte”.
By a twist of fate, it was Luigi Ferrari, a
simple 34-year-old lieutenant from
Castelnuovo Magra in the province of La
Spezia, who fired the shot which
wounded the general’s right leg. Ferrari
boasted a rich C.V. full of glorious events
and medals; he particularly stood out in
the battle of San Martino (1859) and in
the fight against the brigandage, but
surely he could not imagine he would
have been the one to shoot the hero who
shone in the Italians imagination. On that
day, he had taken out his regulation
revolver, a 12-calibre Lefaucheux, and he
had hit the rebellious general in the right
foot’s malleolus. He therefore determined
the end of the fratricidal flight.
Garibaldi, wounded, was taken as a
prisoner to the forte di Varignano,
between La Spezia and Portovenere,
where today the “arditi incursori”, a
special body of the Navy, train. During
that stay, which lasted a few weeks, he
was paid many visits, among which
Giuseppe Mazzini’s, himself wanted by
the police forces of half of Europe.
Mazzini dressed up as a woman, and he
got a cabman from Spezia to take him to
Varignano, to give him a hug and talk to
him.
Garibaldi left the Golfo dei Poeti on 22nd

servizio. Anni dopo divenne sindaco di
Castelnuovo Magra ma quel colpo di pistola sparato a Garibaldi continuò a perseguitarlo. Lo storico Arrigo Petacco, che
a Castelnuovo è nato, ha raccolto testimonianze su quel Ferrari che è un suo
antenato e ha raccontato che di notte
anarchici e repubblicani cantavano spesso sotto le sue finestre una canzoncina
irriverente che faceva così: “Noi sappiam chi fu quella bala funesta che
ferì Garibaldi onorato che alla Spezia fu distaccato. Disonore a chi gli
sparò”.
Da qualche mese, come detto, al
monumento equestre è stata applicata una “protesi”: un robusto cavalletto di metallo sotto la parte anteriore del cavallo per evitare pericolosi
cedimenti della struttura. Garibaldi,
dunque, non corre il rischio d’essere
disarcionato, il che sarebbe una beffa ben più grave di quella che dovette subire alcuni anni fa quando
un teppista si arrampicò sulla
groppa del cavallo e lo privò
della sciabola. b

shooting, had to have his left foot
amputated, and therefore had to leave
the service. Years later he became Mayor
of Castelnuovo Magra; however, that gun
shot to Garibaldi kept on persecuting
him. The historian Arrigo Petacco, who
was born in Castelnuovo, has gathered
statements about Ferrari, his ancestor; he
said that during the night anarchists and
republicans often sang under his
windows an irreverent song which went
like this: “We know who was the deadly
bullet to injure the honourable Garibaldi,
who was sent to La Spezia. Shame on who
shot him”.
As already mentioned, a “prosthesis” has
been applied to the equestrian
monument since a few months ago. A
sturdy metal trestle under the front part
of the horse, to avoid dangerous
structure failures. Garibaldi does not risk
then to be dismounted, which would be a
more serious mockery of the one he had
to endure some years ago, when a yob
climbed on the horse‘s back and deprived
it of the sabre. b

Un’occasione unica per conoscere da vicino i Palazzi dei Rolli, riconosciuti nel 2006 Patrimonio Mondiale Unesco. Un viaggio in cui la contemporaneità incontra l’arte antica. Sculture, video, installazioni e performances interagiscono con i palazzi
storici e le collezioni permanenti dei musei di Strada Nuova e della Galleria Nazionale di Palazzo Spinola. Una rinnovata collaborazione tra
gli organizzatori e le sedi istituzionali e private della città ha reso possibile un’offerta ancora più articolata, che animerà il percorso con teatro di strada itinerante, letture, animazioni e dj sets. Per i più piccoli, l’Associazione Palatifini ha pensato un percorso in tre tappe da piazza Campetto a piazza Pellicceria, abbinando la cultura del cibo alla marineria. After the great success of the first edition, the “Rolli Days” are returning to enliven the historic area for two days with art, music, theatre
and gastronomy. This is a unique occasion to get to know close up the Palazzi dei Rolli, which became World Heritage in 2006. It is a
journey in which contemporary art meets ancient art. Sculptures, videos, displays and performances interact with the historic palazzos and
the permanent collections of the museums in Via Nuova and those of the National Gallery at Palazzo Spinola. A renewed collaboration
between the organizers and institutional and private places in the city has made an even more varied offer possible, and it will enliven the
itinerary with wandering street theatre, readings, animations and DJ sets. For children, the Associazione Palatifini has worked out an itinerary
in three stages from Piazza Campetto to Piazza Pellicceria, combining food culture with navy culture. It is also possible to go on free guided
visits to see the interiors of palazzos not normally open to the public. Partners in the event are 16 galleries of modern and contemporary

Aspettando il Palio del Golfo, che scatterà la prima domenica
d’agosto, si comincia a fare sul serio con le regate di avvicinamento. Si comincia il 9 maggio alle ore 10.30 a C.R.D.D, nelle
acque antistanti alla passeggiata Morin, per proseguire nelle
domeniche successive al canale di Portovenere (16, ore 17) e a
Tellaro (23, ore 10.30). L’ultimo appuntamento di maggio è al

Waiting for the Palio del Golfo competition, which will start on
the first Sunday in August, people start to do things seriously
with the approach regattas. They start on 9 May at 10.30 am at
C.R.D.D, in the waters in front of the Morin promenade, to continue on the following Sundays in the Portovenere channel (16,
