Biol. Mar. Mediterr. (2008), 15 (suppl.): 231-233 POLYPLACOPHORA Bruno Dell’Angelo Via Santelia, 55/12A - 16153 Genova, Italia. Polyplacophorans, commonly referred to as chitons, are exclusively marine molluscs, characterized by the presence of eight dorsal overlapping shell plates (valves) and a broad ventral ciliated foot. Surrounding the dorsal shell plates there is a thick marginal girdle (perinotum), itself covered with numerous calcareous or corneous spines, scales, or bristles, as well as sensory organs. A revision of chitons systematics has been recently proposed by Sirenko (2006), while general informations on this group are given by Eernisse & Reynolds (1994). More than 900 living species are currently recognized in this group (Schwabe, 2005). Many recent papers are relating to Mediterranean chitons (Dell’Angelo & Smriglio, 1999), and the number of species presents in this area is extended to 29, comprising two Atlantic Leptochiton species (L. sarsi Kaas, 1981 and L. pepezamorai Carmona Zalvide, Urgorri & Garcia, 2004) recently found in the Tuscan Archipelago (Dell’Angelo et al., in press). Five other species are living in the Mediterranean Sea, but not along the italian coasts: Leptochiton asellus (Gmelin, 1791) along the spanish coasts and Baleari Islands, Lepidochitona (L.) canariensis (Thiele, 1909) in the Mediterranean Morocco, Ischnochiton (Haploplax) tsekosi Koukouras & Karachle, 2005 in the Aegean Sea, Chaetopleura angulata Spengler, 1797 along the Spanish coasts (in the surroundings of Gibraltar) and Tegulaplax hululensis (E.A. Smith in Gardiner, 1903) along the Israeli coasts. Bibliografia/References DELL’ANGELO B., GIUSTI F., PAOLINI P., SOSSO M., BONFITTO A., (in press). New data on Polyplacophora from Tuscan Arcipelago.
