Aesthetic capital The principles and rules of democracy are irrelevant to the nature of Italian people who do not care about politics […] The big mass of the Italians is individualist […] Mussolini was right when he said that Italians have always been poor people”. (D’Arcy Osborne, British Minister to the Vatican, November 1943) H ave the Italians always been poor people? We are poor people who see only what is convenient. We enjoy watching from behind the newspaper, we make t wo round holes and we look beyond goggling because beyond we do not find anything. Once upon a t ime there was a subst rat um of subversion in the poor jargon. In 1967 Germano Celant, introducing his rebellious artists, wrote about revolution, acts rich in social significance, art merging with life, action as liberation . The poor art was born. I have always looked with suspicion at this close past, as if it was a too heavy burden for our contemporary scene. That conceptual trend to which many young artists are still prone, turns too often into something similar to the enthusiastic “It could work” shouted by Dottor Frederick Frankenstein/Gene Wilder in Young Frankenstein by Mel Brooks. Nero, however, keeps its poetical feature and its challenging will, bringing the language up to date. He keeps the enthusiasm of the experimentation but he detaches from easy and foregone classification. In 1957, ten years before the poor art was born, t he Sit uat ioni s t s sho ok Par i s w it h all t heir détournements. Destabilizing acts whose purpose was creating new connections bet ween objects and places, a sor t of readymade by Duchamp applied to the situations and not to the objects. For example, the bank that turns into a museum is a perfect détournement, a shift that nowadays is almost necessary in the poor Italy and Nero, in his peculiar way, gives it ill-gotten gains of the failed revolutions back. In 1962 Raoul Venigem wrote “nowadays a rich person is someone who has the largest number of poor objects”. It was fifty years ago but the social attention is still directed only to the market. What is important is how much merchandise you can afford and not how many ideas you can have. And yet the word “merchandise” stems from the Latin “merere” which means “ deserve”. Clearly we are victim of a big bluff. Nero does not tell anything but this story that seems to wrap on itself. Hidden behind every clue we find the cornerstones of our society, symbols of powers that we, poor Italians, observe in silence because with the passing of time we have got convinced that all this is normal or even fair. Works are like the bread crumbs of Pollicino that lead us home, to that mini italia imprisoned behind the china cabinet. I am afraid that as long as the cupboard is beautiful and the china cabinet clean we will stay there, hung to the notice board playing with bricks with that look of amazement. Italians, poor people. Sibilla Zandonini (Milano, 1985) is a journalist, critic and independent curator. In 2010 she conceived TEMA magazine, a online quarterly publication she takes care of in every aspect. TEMA wants to be a meeting point between audience and artists, each issue includes four exclusive interviews with Italian artists. A common topic becomes a pretext to investigate the artistic career of every single artist. Before devoting to this particular form of virtual trusteeship, she worked as gallery assistant at The Flat – Massimo Carasi and at the PAC – The pavilion of contemporary art in Milan. Maintenance a conversation between Alberto Zanchetta/Nero I n your second last solo exhibition That’s hole Folks! in 2010, you confessed wanting to deal with “the topic of economic interests that boost big countries to turn their goals into real holes”, explaining that “plundering and devastating seem to be the prerogative to modify what could be managed as economic and social operations”. On that occasion you exhibited a series of works named Homework in which an unusual icon recurred, “the shopping cart”, consumerism symbol that identified with social, political and religious troubles. That’s hole Folks! introduced a miscellany of works that did not cope only with economics, whereas Post-real life or hostage/privilege is based on this subject. How has the awareness and urge of dealing with such a thorny matter for the topical interest matured in the last year? The series Homework was born in 2009 as a personal desire to realize social and financial architectures that could analyse some concepts typical of the contemporar y economics thanks to the use of recurring shapes, icons and messages pertaining to our daily life. In this exhibition, instead, I extracted/showed concepts, personal thoughts settled in my notes since many years and which built my secret world, made of simple images. The “ homework”, as usual, is the spontaneous or forced reflection, raising consciousness of part of the system and its many facets, the sudden effort made by the brain to finally devote to the global human metaphor. By the means of the series of works displayed in London at the exhibition Heavenly Creatures last year and in particular making use of zoomorphic sculptures and wooden frames, I faced the most personal theory stating that economy is the psychologist of the world. Only taking a hard look on economy and letting her settle down on a couch, we can understand which could be its direction, developments and also our expectations. We will know much more about that at the end of the session , but not as much to be sure of its actions. As far as your question is concerned, I think that the current affairs are thorn for the economy. During the conception of this exhibition I have noticed a particular emphasis on words like “deception” and “ deceit” which underline your attempt to invalidate the real, with the need to plagiarize or at least deform the meaning of the images. You admit having conceived the works as “a cheating to the detriment of body and mind”. Would you mind defining more exactly what do you mean by post-real and which meaning do you assign to the pair hostage/privilege that appears in the title of the exhibition? Post-real is all we have just experienced and we are experiencing instant by instant. I like to define it as such because in our minds it is still vivid but, actually, it has already moved somewhere else. Post-real can be a counterfeit event as the cruel reality, which for its same extravagance evolves in something mystified, an altered present. Post-real is what we imagine to live and what we see/generate with our mind. A lot of images are conceived with a lo-fi(1) technique, so as to make real this muffled effect that wants to be and stay distant from our conscious part, a clear sensation in the story that seems blurred when we reproach to go into details. The pair hostage/privilege and the dichotomy that arises when we read this two words together makes me happy and at the same time dims my happiness annihilating me incredibly. We think not to take part of it, we think that it affects only other people, but it is not true, we are all hostages, constantly, even if we are not aware of it. We are taken hostage by the politics, the market, the development, the State, money, our choices, vices and virtues. When we try to give a distress signal , everyone nods but the reality is always the same, all remains unchanged. It is not kidnapping, it is a “pure privilege”. If we say thank you, probably we do not make a boor of ourselves. (1) Lo-Fi is technique of low fidelity sound recording. Ma lo “scopo” dell’arte è la domanda sull’arte, non per nulla ha sempre We are living a period of economic crisis that involves all the occidental world and there is a real danger that the societ y and politics collapse under the overwhelming burden of the recession. How does the fact that the project houses in a bank institute influence your work? There are a lot of parameters to fulfil of course, and using them in my favour is enormously pleasant, most of all if you have always tried to elude them as I do. The works and their concepts are selected between many ideas in order to give the more exhaustive and comprehensive reading of my social economic view. So, I looked for a series of subtle inputs that could partly get in touch with the occasional consumer who makes use of the bank and of its ends. Partly I produced real visions, images rooted in the current affairs that are soaked with concepts. Talking about something else would have been useless, the economy and the social could not stay out of this project side/site-specific that seized the most suitable stage, an excellent stage. It would be the same in the case we would critically study the Word of God in a catholic cathedral. In banks I have always seen displayed works that did not reflect the place predisposition, but in this case this relation exists because the works live the space and thanks to it they are perceived by the consumer. In the last decades we have been unwilling witnesses to a cultural subversion. The work of art, once world heritage, has weakened in a private property, in the place of being a good thing for men, art has become a simple consumer good. By now artists are forced to produce more than create. The exploitation of the work and the intellect tends to go along with the consumers’ tastes. The cultural values are redefined as consumption and exploitation value. So, the economy has in its power and holds in check both ethics and aesthetics. In practice, the art system asserts itself as a cultural industry that wants to increase its own capital. The société du spectacle turned the end, that is the art (pour l’art), into a mean that makes profit. Employing Marx’s words, it seems that art has become an opaque wrapping, that is a “commodity” and as such it has to submit to the market laws that base on the principle of the supply and demand. However, art’s purpose is the question about art, in fact it has always had the merit of raising questions, more than providing answers (the question has never been interlocutory, but it asserted itself as the same act of questioning). Or perhaps should I call the intellectual problem “speculation”, borrowing the term from the economic jargon? About ten years ago when I started to commit myself to art, I thought that the purity and passion, but also the effort and vigour, with which I devoted myself to sculpture or graphics could stay unchanged. (We live in a crappy unbelievable world). With the passing of time I dodged blows, asked and even begged for what I was entitled to as of right. Now I have understood that I am creating for myself, for people whether they understand or not, but little for the market because I know that it is very busy and I would never disturb it. After having visited the bank’s spaces, at first I thought of a plan to empty it deftly but as usual I found myself filling it with a lot of things –in my opinion- which are to be said. The relation creation/reward or work/money do not have that great poetical meaning that embodied in the past anymore. The industrial commercialization and the economic twists has changed the art system as far as both the demand and achievement procedures are concerned, causing tensions and misunderstandings. In the catalogue I reproduced a small dictionary in four languages that I consider as a true work of art made of paper. WÖRTERVERZEICHNIS(2) aims at making people think about the concept of work considering/listing some of its tools that are apparently without value but they are fundamental for the survival of the individual and consequently also of the work, the art and the market. Let’s continue speaking about the critical method you adopted dealing with the present, but this time in relation to the publication published on the occasion of this exhibition. It is not only a catalogue which illustrates the exhibition, in fact you conceived it as a second thoughts - a reshuffle? Repossession? – of the cultural dynamics... Now that the choices of the State are without future and art, culture and social development are not taken into consideration, in my opinion it is very important to conceive a publication that is not a solo, but an interview with different figures who can state their own view freely. This was the original idea of the project. I have not been able yet to understand if the project has developed as I imagined it or if it has gone off the (2) Glossary 24 | Alberto Zanchetta/Nero personale ma interrogando diverse figure che possano esporre la loro visione in maniera libera. Prima di concludere, vuoi aggiungere qualcos’altro? rails, beyond, crashing into the reality. In this case it would not be as bad: tackling the failure, all assumes a new perception which, in the end, turns into a confirmation of the post-real theory. To conclude, would you like to add something? At present I am looking for new cultural partners, new galleries, new chances, new collectors, new thinkers, new foundations, new inputs, new parallel futures to build together works and concepts that go beyond us and could be more useful than how much we think this very second. Ecco perché fare una mostra in una banca, come nel caso del progetto di Nero, non vuol dire semplicemente collocare delle opere dentro ad un luogo destinato We need economy (and politics) T he assumption that underlies the philosophic t hought of Carl Mar x , and of cour se the Hegelian model of the dialect ical materialism, is that the economic variables are the real driving force which inf luences the choices of the capitalistic society. In an antithetic or complementary way as for what theorized by Max Weber in The Protestant Ethic and the Spirit of Capitalism, it is economy and the longing for profit that lay the foundations of the evolution to the modern society. We could say that this is a conclusion that borders on the common sense and the experience of everybody. And yet, having more in a world where men compete for winning the goods (when they are few), for paying the production factors and the capital, or for the usefulness of the goods, explains how the creation of the value of the many things is the real big battle field where men measure their selves. Beyond any economic theorization, we need the formation of a value that represents the coal that feeds the locomotive to which we are hitched on our private wagon. The contemporar y ar t therefore represent s a fascinating research field for those who deal with economics (both in an academic form or in the daily practice), as people who work in the fashion business understood some time ago because they need creation of something - also profitable - ex novo. The art for its magic ability makes possible that the difference between the assigned (and paid) value and the production cost reaches its peak, generating a short-circuit with respect to the logics in force in the other economic sectors. By nature it also escapes the idea of being predictable because it vigorously denies what it asserted in the instant before. Ar t ist s should know that the equivalence k unst=k apit al is not merely a social-political consideration by Joseph Beuys, but clear reasoning on how art can act like yeast when all the ingredients are properly mixed. That is why exhibiting in a bank as Nero does, means not only to display works inside a place designed for heritage preservation, but also an attempt to combine the factors together so that the magic dust of art infects the heritage and also some of that preserved wealth encourages the contemporary artistic research. Vedere lavori come people watching o gang banging on a star (rispettivamente un giornale bucato quasi a diventare una maschera e Nero’s research has been subjected to a course change during the last two years. The stronger conceptual needs that in past took shape in atypical, odd figures and in the frequent use of ceramic that derives from the handcraft tradition of Faenza, have matured and they have adopted new forms of expression. In particular the drawing has the function of having led the artist’s work towards complex relational dynamics: the reality, the news, the communication world and its lies. These have always been around the corner but then they have forcefully crept into his work, driving his works from an ironic but still surreal and dreamy atmosphere to another whose contents are astonishing and mordacious and where the game of deceit typical of the reality is made more explicit. Nero’s thought has turned from the will to produce artistic handworks (real object s) into a more anarchic dimension where the right to visual or conceptual analysis and critics of the real is in force. The artist is stimulated not only by the effect aspect, but also by that of the warning, that is the will to generate thinking spaces where the art consents to open conclusions after having broken the reference paradigms. So, the project of an exhibition in a bank for an artist with a background alternative in a way and avoiding the cool and sequins practice as that of Nero, can be a form of robbery. Robbery to be intended as a forced/playful takeover of someone else’s places, but surely not by the means of the violent action of thieves, since the artist chooses to go against the machine. Mounting an exhibition in a bank, except for the consolidated practice of some credit institutions that house exhibitions, is the real work of art of the project given that in this way the artist’s works are placed out of their context. If a lot of works of artists generate from the need of staging the rearrangement of the object (the dét ou r nement theor ized by Guy Debord but already put into practice by the surrealists and Marcel Duchamp), the bank project of Nero reveals how the “squared” practice is possible, that is the rearrangement of the rearrangement. Seeing works like people watching and gang banging on a star (respectively a perforated newspaper looking like a mask and the parody of the popular science-fiction TV series whose characters have the eyes erased) out of the visual context, as for example the art gallery or a private house, means moving somewhere else the game with the spectator, towards a dimension where the work of art flees from the amniotic pocket of the place of art, gets his hands dirty with reality 52 | Daniele Capra la parodia della celebre serie di fantascienza in cui gli occhi dei personaggi sono stati cancellati) fuori del contesto in cui si pratica la visione, come ad esempio la galleria o la propria casa, significa evidentemente spostare altrove il gioco con lo spettatore, verso una dimensione in cui l’opera si sottrae dalla morbida sacca amniotica del luogo d’arte per sporcarsi le mani con la realtà; accettando talvolta, inutile dirlo, anche di non essere l’attore principale della recita. Solo che questa volta, il circo, più che felici i bambini, farà pensierosi i grandi. and sometimes it accepts even not to be the main character in the play. The ironic trumpets of trumpet economy disaster that anticipate the exhibition the day of the opening, will blare out in the streets near the bank where the exhibition is housed, like when the circus is announced. But this time the circus, more than making children laugh, will make the adults think. Daniele Capra (1976) è giornalista e curatore indipendente. La seconda traslazione si è verificata quando le avanguardia storiche, e con particolare lucidità (1) The beauty in the crisis W e are witnessing to what could be the fourth migration of the quiddity of the work of art. Taking into account that this kind of migrations are not watertight compartments that occur (and they did not occur) equally and at the same time for all the languages and places, not always in the same succession and never in a complete and pervading way, they can be described as follows. The first migration is closely linked with the revolution in the manufacturing processes from which the conflict between the worker and the consumer/profit machine arises and it is still without solution. What Karl Marx defines as the demeaning separation of the manual ability from the intellectual one creates the necessary conditions for the artist’s independence from the craftsmanship and overcomes the perceptive and cultural coordinates that let the artist be recognizable in respect to his work. The same phenomenon that on one hand has tragic and unsolved effects both on the society and the human dignity, on the other hand is providential for the progress of the creative thinking independence. This relapse effect, however, would not have been possible without another coinciding revolution: the silent and unstoppable surfacing of the middle class as interlocutor and financial backer of the artist. Thus let the art be free from the centuries-old secular and spiritual supremacies, leading to a space not influenced by advertising purposes, not subduable to moral censorship, not bound to the preventive restriction of themes and subjects, and in a short time of tools and formalisms, too. Benjamin writes that in the face of its secularization and its increasing “technical reproducibility”, the art answers “with the theory of the art for the art that lays the foundations of an art theology”(1) and replaces its main social, cultural and possibly demagogic function. The second transfer occurred when the historical avantgardes and the lucid and effective works by Marcel Duchamp shifted the acknowledgement of art from the objectivity of the manufacture to the artist’s purpose. Leo Steinberg, Other criteria, 1972. Jean Luc Nancy maintains that since Duchamp has placed a urinal in a museum, the contemporary art has become “an appointment without appointment, that is a meeting between the one called artist and something that he chooses in an exact moment reinterpreting as shape” (2) . According to a sort of predominant nominalism art is what the author defines as such thanks to a linguistic and conceptual operation. The hic et nunc is definitively transferred from the visible and objective result to the conceptual process developed by the artist, who adopts an almost demiurgic ability to extract sense from the plain reality. While the manual skill has become irrelevant, the sacredness of the object chosen by the artist and invested with new meanings, stands still, even if it is almost definitively untied from confessional regimes. Leo Steinberg brilliantly describes the following migration as a transfer from a vertical direction of the work of art, that is from the relation between the object and its spectator constantly centred on a visual condition according to the natural experience, to an horizontal one. So, “the psychic reference of the image, its peculiar relation with the imagination of the observer changes irrespective of the installation of the work of art [...] : this is the passage from nature to culture”(3). Since the end of the Fifties the artists have become more and more convinced to interact horizontally and possibly democratically with the spectators thanks to the previous experience of Duchamp. The quiddity has therefore multiplied and, more or less happily, spread according to an environmental prospective all around the action, the thought or the object that triggered it. The arduous story of these passages of state, transits and decays of what Benjamin calls “aura”, is followed by that of the continuous challenge of the art system, imagined as an authentic manufacturing branch from the author to the consumer, embodied by the art collector, where unusual thinking areas populated by art dealer and merchants arise. The demystification of the work till the mimesis of objects taken from the mass culture, its dematerialization up to its belittling to a series of repeated actions without apparent meaning but its declaration of illogical language and eventually its delocalization with its consequences on the tangibility and portability leading even to interventions on environmental scale in some far places, are processes that could be interpreted as the Pietro Gaglianò | 103 della cultura di massa), la sua smaterializzazione (fino alla riduzione a una serie di azioni ripetute, senza apparente senso che non fosse la stessa dichiarazione di insensatezza del linguaggio), la sua delocalizzazione, con conseguenze sulla tangibilità e trasportabilità (fino agli interventi su scala ambientale in paesaggi remoti), sono processi interpretabili come altrettanti tentativi degli artisti di sottrarre sé stessi e il proprio lavoro al consumo dell’arte. In quest a sfera la quintessenza dell’arte coincide con la sua liberazione same efforts that artists make to save themselves and their work from the art consumption. This challenge ended with a capitulation of the artists in front of a new kind of setback that is neither ideological as that of the ancient totalitarian regime nor, or not mainly, economic. It is a banal framework that penalizes the non-compliance with its rules with complete indifference towards all that is not included. The artist, according to unfathomable personal and product parameters, has to keep his status of irreverent experimenter or inventor of conceptual, aesthetics or perceptive mechanisms, provided that the results of his research can be submitted to commercial transaction. The compliance with the conditions set by the system causes troubles as far as the recent, a little more than centenarian, artist’s independence, imposing a choice of field that often admits less nuances than those we would admit. As a consequence of this new subordination, a kind of expatriation in search of political asylum, the fourth quiddity migration is in progress or at least it seems to be the most important to highlight in the perspective of the summarized changes, considering the endless variety typical of the contemporary scene. Art has a new political-philosophical function in relation to the individuals, the state and communities. The aura moved to a still relational sphere that concerns no more virtual but virtuous relationships and has a new goal which is not the object or the work but the same process of relation applied to unprotected situations and dealing with the research of possible solutions, more practical than theoretic. This does not turn to a protected audience, but it addresses directly to a more or less definite group o social actors without leading them to a stage or making sure of an organized area to guarantee that the suggested actions are recognizable as relevant to the artistic dimension. Here the quintessence of art corresponds to its liberation from its spurious uselessness that can be found in every disciplinary and linguistic developments, in both oneto-one relationships or groups. Out of the system. The main consequence of this Diaspora is the vagueness of the formal and conceptual results and the difficulty in converting them into merchandise for art galleries. Something similar is happening in the field of the consumer economics by the means of innovative projects like the GAS (an Italian acronym “Gruppo di Acquisto Solidale”, that in English can be translated as “Solidarity Purchasing Group”), the promotion of a short production chain, the return to ancestral as well as sustainable practices as the barter and the 104 | Pietro Gaglianò dalla pretestuosa sua inutilità, e si riconosce in tutti gli sviluppi disciplinari e linguistici, in tutti i rapporti, biunivoci e di diffusione radiale. It is clear that these are only little and localized realities that cannot either overthrow the global consumer capitalistic system or guarantee an alternative on planetary scale. However the adherence to a new use and consumer model different from the prevailing one is more significant. It is well-known how the loss of only one consumer alarms the firms, smart enough to understand when the choice of an individual can determine the beginning of a turn-round. This is the effect that the options of the critical consumption can put into action, a turn-about as far as an omnipotent market that is aware of its absolute power in dictating tastes, giving rise to desires, influencing daily life and people imagination is concerned. It is amazing how farsighted Pasolini was when he described “the models of the new industrialization that was no more satisfied with men that consumed, but also claimed that the only conceivable ideology was that of consume”(4). It was 1973. The crisis of the art system is perhaps a consequence or perhaps, being a chain of actions and reactions detectable since more than fifteen years, it forewarned the crisis of the global economic system that has spread in the last years. After a careful consideration it is plain that these are two phenomena connected one to each other and rich in analogies, and the analysis or the description of one can provide clues to understand the other and vice versa. In both cases these phenomena represent a waiver from the mainstream current of thought and they have not the requirements of antagonism and boycott. On the contrary they give rise to situations which have the nature of the invention like elaborations arisen from the observation of the existent and that step in with new strategies. What has been just mentioned shows with quite a certain knowledge that a restoration of the previous balance is an absurd solution for this crisis. In fact the efforts made by the international politics to face the collapse caused by the financial speculations look tragically and ridiculously like the Restoration of a lost world attempted In Europe in 1814. A crisis is a chance to change, the perfect juncture to choose new perspectives, an opportunity that cannot be wasted “to lay bare the causes of a disaster that has not finished yet”(5). That occurs in the fabulous world of the “production abusers”, as Paul Ariès called it, as well Pietro Gaglianò | 105 dall’osservazione dell’esistente, e che tendono a intervenire su questo con strategie nuove. (5) as in the myopic one of the “aura merchants”. However, the danger is the pillage of the propelling force typical of this transformation by the clever leading supporters of the one-way thought who acquire the terms and management of some trends in order to conform and convert them into profit. As examples: the products which claim to be organic, the business of eating slowly, the critical historicization of a creative attitude that is still in progress and eventually the aid and funding to projects that strive for independence. This can be an absolute refusal of the Machiavellian “the end justifies the means”. I think that the values of a thing has to be found in the processes, in the authenticity and sensibleness.
