SIMA 2009 will welcome more than 1,350 exhibitors, half of them arriving from forty countries around the world. Italy will provide a substantial presence to account for nearly 14% of all exhibitors in the salon. At the international level, SIMA has completed new partnership accords which call for four pavilions, for Russia, the Czech Republic, Ukraine and China, to allow these countries’ manufacturers to join their efforts for presenting themselves to the markets. Also the exhibition area of the trade fair quarters has been expanded thanks to the completion of the new pavilion 7 – one of the big new features of this SIMA edition. The new facility will provide more than 2,000 m2 set aside for energy of the future where the space Agriculture & Energy will be set up. Here, visitors can discover a number of solutions leading to savings in the production of renewable energy and take in the sector dedicated to machinery for the maintenance of rural areas and forestry. The SIMA preparing to open its doors is coming at a decidedly favorable time, in the wake of the strong growth of the French agricultural machinery market in 2008 now, according to estimates, expected to reach the value of about 4.6 billion euros for a 20% surge over 2007 to put this market at the top in Europe. In coping with the current economic crisis, the outlook for 2009 is for a degree of stability. Again for 2008, assessments of the French tractor market refer to sales increases in the area of 5% for standard tractors and 7% for specialized vineyard and orchard tractors. Parallel to the growth of sales in France was the increase in the average horsepower of the machines, rising to 131 HP for tractors, compared to 107 HP in 1999, figures which disclose a substantial gain in the market for high powered tractors. Sales of those over 150 HP grew 82% in 2008. A similar trend in increasing power in recent years is also seen in combine harvesters and silage trailers. While they were virtually non-existent ten years ago, more than one-third of the silage trailers now on the market are rated at beyond 500 HP. Thus SIMA can look to excellent prospects in showcasing a strongly dynamic market for high-tech machinery with greater power across the ranges and ongoing innovation. In this connection, the event will feature the traditional SIMA Innovation Awards conferred by an international juMMW n. 1/2009 – 29 SIMA 2009 • SIMA 2009 • SIMA 2009 • SIMA 2009 • SIMA 2009 • SIMA 2009 • SIMA 2009 • SIMA 2009 • SIMA 2009 ry for the purpose of spotlighting lively design coming from the companies exhibiting at the salon and the more significant innovations as regards technologies, safety, usability and concept. Fifteen experts from six nations have examined 154 applications submitted by SIMA exhibitors and selected 25 for the awards. The jury weighed various criteria in assigning the awards, beginning with sustainable development pursued through the use of alternative energy sources and the reduction of the consumption of the planet’s natural resources. For the Italian companies, the gold medals in this area are going to New Holland for the manufacturer’s hydrogen powered tractor and to the GPS wireless irrigation guidance system from Comer Industries. Among the other guidelines for the jury were the development of new IT techniques – New Holland’s intelligent user interface for operating combine harvesters – and improving the use of machinery as regards comfort, performance and safety, with special mention, to name one, for the Same Deutz-Fahr semi-active cab suspension. Barbara Mengozzi 30 – MMW n. 1/2009 innovazioni.
