Sindone, ostensione in diretta tv
E' l'icona per eccellenza dell'Uomo dei dolori. Appuntamento in mondovisione il 30
marzo 2013, Sabato santo. Un'iniziativa nell'ambito dell'Anno delle fede.

Papa Benedetto XVI l la definì «l'icona del Sabato santo». La Sindone continua a
commuovere, interrogare, stupire. Sabato 30 marzo 2013, vigilia di Pasqua, il
telo conservato a Torino, il lenzuolo che secondo la tradizione avvolse Gesù
dopo che venne deposto dalla croce, sarà visto in ogni parte del pianeta,
grazie a un programma televisivo ripreso dalle telecamere di Rai 1 e trasmesso in
mondovisione.
Non un'ostensione "tradizionale", dunque, come quella che nel 2010 portò a Torino
2 milioni di pellegrini, ma un evento carico di significati: l'ostensione televisiva si
inserisce nell'ambito dell'Anno della Fede voluto da papa Benedetto XVI e avviene in
un momento cruciale per la storia della Chiesa. E' monsignor Cesare Nosiglia,
arcivescovo di Torino e custode pontificio della Sindone, a chiarire il senso di
questa particolare ostensione: «L'evento ha un grande significato spirituale e
pastorale, ma anche storico», spiega durante una conferenza stampa. L'idea è
nata diversi mesi fa: «ho cominciato a riflettere con le autorità competenti della Santa Sede - racconta
l'Arcivescovo – e ho ottenuto il placet di Benedetto XVI, che ci ha incoraggiati dando all'evento un taglio di
evangelizzazione e di contemplazione». Immediatamente la memoria ritorna al 2 maggio 2010, quando papa Joseph Ratzinger, pellegrino a Torino, si
raccolse in preghiera davanti alla Sindone. La volontà di scegliere proprio la vigilia di Pasqua come data
dell'ostensione deriva proprio dalle parole di Benedetto XVI. «Il Sabato santo è' un giorno di silenzio e di
preghiera – ricorda monsignor Nosiglia – ma anche un giorno di attesa, di apertura del cuore e della vita alla luce
della risurrezione». L'ostensione televisiva non è un fatto inedito nella storia della Sindone. Era il 23 novembre 1973 quando, per la
prima volta, furono trasmesse in diretta le immagini del telo (in quell'occasione esposto verticalmente e non
orizzontalmente com'è consuetudine). Sono passati quarant'anni, densi di trasformazioni e novità, ma
l'immagine dell'uomo della Sindone (martoriato di ferite in ogni parte del corpo, eppure misteriosamente capace
di irradiare un senso di serenità e abbandono) non ha smesso di interrogare credenti e non. Riguardo
all'autenticità del lino la comunità scientifica continua a essere divisa e su questi argomenti la Chiesa si è sempre
espressa con grande cautela. E' però soprattutto allo sguardo della fede che l'Arcivescovo di Torino desidera fare appello: «Ai credenti
comunque ciò che interessa è che la Sindone ci svela il sacrificio e la sofferenza patita da Gesù. Quel volto
dell'uomo dei dolori, che è poi il volto di ogni uomo sulla terra, ci parla di amore e di dono, di grazia e di
perdono». Ecco perché all'ostensione, che avverrà in Duomo nel pomeriggio di sabato 30 durante una
celebrazione della Parola di Dio, parteciperanno circa 300 malati e disabili, persone che «portano sul loro
corpo i segni della Sindone». Ma ci sarà anche una delegazione di giovani: l'evento infatti rientra nel programma
del Sinodo diocesano che li accompagna in questi anni.
E proprio pensando ai giovani sono nate alcune idee tecnologiche legate alla Sindone. Si tratta di prodotti
multimediali (compresa un'"App" per dispositivi mobili) grazie ai quali sarà possibile vedere le immagini del telo
in altissima definizione, conoscerne le vicissitudini storiche, ma anche gli studi scientifici e il punto di vista dei
credenti. Non c'è da stupirsi: negli ultimi tempi la Chiesa ha raccolto con entusiasmo la sfida dei nuovi media. I
tweet di Benedetto XVI sono un messaggio eloquente.

Non solo in televisione, ma anche sullo smartphone o sul
tablet. In tempo per la seconda ostensione televisiva della
storia, che sarà trasmessa su Rai Uno dal Duomo di
Torino il prossimo 30 marzo, Sabato Santo, arriverà negli
store virtuali un'applicazione che per la prima volta
permetterà di visualizzare in alta definizione la Sindone
sul proprio dispositivo mobile.
Sindone 2.0: l'App è allo studio della società Hal9000,
che nel 2008 riprese ad altissima risoluzione il Telo
conservato da oltre tre secoli nella cattedrale torinese.
Per il momento sarà destinata soltanto ai dispositivi
Apple, nulla toglie però che in futuro possa essere
realizzata anche una versione per Android.
"Se la prossima ostensione televisiva sarà la seconda
della storia, dopo quella trasmessa nel 1973 dal Salone
degli Svizzeri del Palazzo Reale di Torino, questa che
sarà possibile avere con la nuova applicazione sarà la
prima ostensione mobile in assoluto", spiega il

L'applicazione renderà disponibili a tutti le esclusive immagini ad alta definizione della Sindone riprese nel
2008: fotografie estremamente dettagliate, che se ingrandite al massimo necessiterebbero per essere
contenute in un solo schermo di uno spazio di 68 metri per 18. L'App le renderà visibili all'interno di quattro
"percorsi": i dettagli del Telo, l'Uomo della Sindone, le indagini scientifiche, il percorso biblico. Sarà
plurilingue, in italiano, inglese, spagnolo e portoghese, e disponibile in due versioni, una completa a
pagamento e una gratuita con le immagini base e soltanto il percorso biblico.

Sindone, il 30 marzo
l'ostensione televisiva
Questa è la terza del nuovo millennio. Ma, a differenza del 2000 e del 2010, durerà poco più di un'ora invece di 40
giorni; i pellegrini staranno a casa propria ma saranno molti milioni in più dei 4 che, in tutto, vennero a Torino 3 e 13 anni
fa.
È l'ostensione televisiva della Sindone, in onda il pomeriggio del 30 marzo su RaiUno, nell'ambito della trasmissione A
sua immagine. E non solo in Italia: la Rai offrirà la trasmissione in mondovisione; si prevede grande interesse soprattutto
nei Paesi di tradizione cristiana di America Latina, e nelle Filippine. L'iniziativa è stata presentata ieri mattina a Torino,
nel Seminario metropolitano, a due passi dal Duomo in cui la Sindone è custodita e da dove non verrà spostata.
Il Custode pontificio Cesare Nosiglia, arcivescovo di Torino, ha spiegato subito la cosa fondamentale: l'ostensione rientra
nell'Anno della fede, ed è una proposta di «nuova evangelizzazione» che si avvale delle tecnologie multimediali per
raggiungere non solo i credenti, in quei luoghi della "piazza telematica" che oggi hanno sostituito tanta parte delle
aggregazioni tradizionali.
L'idea dell'ostensione maturò nell'estate scorsa, e venne approvata da papa Benedetto XVI (la Santa Sede è la
proprietaria del Telo, destinatole per volontà testamentaria da Umberto II di Savoia, l'ultimo re d'Italia). Il giorno scelto,
Sabato Santo, richiama alla splendida riflessione che il Papa propose durante la sua visita nell'ostensione 2010: la
Sindone come «icona del Sabato Santo», testimonianza del Cristo morto e del silenzio in cui il mondo intero è piombato;
ma anche segno grande di speranza, di attesa della risurrezione. L'arcivescovo Nosiglia ha ricordato le parole di papa Ratzinger, allargando poi l'attenzione a un altro contenuto
fondamentale: l'immagine del Telo, che riporta i segni della Passione di Gesù, è una testimonianza dei dolori del corpo,
delle sofferenze del mondo. Anche per questo nel Duomo di Torino ci saranno i malati: e saranno loro a sfilare di fronte
alla Sindone, a conclusione della preghiera liturgica guidata dall'arcivescovo. «Bisogna sentire la voce della Sindone,
bisogna ascoltare il suo silenzio parlante – ha detto Nosiglia – bisogna riempire il cuore di una fede che possa
trasformare la contemplazione della Sindone in canto di letizia e di alleluia pasquale».
Per l'ostensione televisiva c'è un precedente: la trasmissione realizzata dal Primo Canale della Rai nel 1973, promossa
dal cardinale Michele Pellegrino. Fu quello l'inizio della nuova stagione della Sindone, portata al centro dell'interesse e
del dibattito scientifico. Ma il terzo millennio, per il Telo di Torino, è segnato. Si va comunque verso la Sindone 2.0. Ieri è
stata annunciata la realizzazione di una app destinata per adesso all'Ipad, che propone la lettura digitale del Telo. Il
programma dovrebbe essere disponibile entro la fine di marzo ed è stato realizzato da Hal9000, la società novarese che
ha prodotto, su concessione della diocesi di Torino, l'immagine digitale completa. La nuova app porta la Sindone nel
mondo del "mobile" e sarà disponibile in una versione base scaricabile gratuitamente, e in una a pagamento (ma a prezzi
comunque contenuti). In preparazione all'ostensione la Commissione torinese per la Sindone ha realizzato vari sussidi
cartacei e "virtuali", mentre è in programma anche un convegno, il prossimo 16 marzo.

«Nell’Anno della fede è indispensabile poter tornare al momento fondante della vita cristiana»:
così il biblista monsignor Giuseppe Ghiberti, presidente della commissione diocesana per la
Sindone, sottolinea al nostro giornale la straordinaria
rilevanza dell’ostensione televisiva del Sacro Telo,
programmata per il prossimo Sabato santo, 30
marzo. Un avvenimento che, attraverso la
trasmissione «A sua immagine», di Rai Uno, sarà
seguito in mondovisione e permetterà di cogliere e
approfondire il messaggio della fede a una platea
molto più vasta di quella di una normale ostensione
(nel 2010 i pellegrini che giunsero a Torino furono
oltre due milioni). Al di là, perciò, di ogni
ragionamento di ordine scientifico sulla sua origine —
sottolinea infatti monsignor Ghiberti — «la Sindone si presenta come la voce del Vangelo,
perché offre una stupefacente corrispondenza visiva con il racconto evangelico e il momento
fondante della nostra fede». Ecco dunque perché questa ostensione televisiva — la seconda
nella storia dopo quella del 1973 — è stata pensata appositamente nel contesto dell’Anno della
fede. Infatti, il carattere più vero e profondo di quell’immagine rimane il suo richiamo fortissimo
al Signore, alla sua Passione e allo straordinario, misterioso silenzio del Sabato santo.
Nel pomeriggio del 30 marzo, perciò, la Sindone sarà estratta dalla teca che la conserva nel
Duomo di Torino e sarà esposta alla venerazione dei fedeli-telespettatori nel corso di una
liturgia della Parola presieduta dall’arcivescovo e custode pontificio, Cesare Nosiglia. La
Sindone sarà mostrata come «icona del Sabato santo», secondo la definizione che ne diede
Benedetto XVI nella sua meditazione di fronte al Telo durante l’ultima ostensione del 2010. «Il
silenzio che avvolge il Sabato santo è lo stesso silenzio in cui si trova la Sindone», ha detto
l’arcivescovo Nosiglia, spiegando ieri, venerdì, ai giornalisti la scelta di fare l’ostensione
nell’immediata vigilia della Pasqua. «Quel volto dell’Uomo dei dolori — ha aggiunto il presule
— richiama il buio della morte ma anche lascia intravedere la luce della vita che da questa
morte scaturisce per tutti gli uomini».

Per animare le iniziative di preparazione e di partecipazione alla ostensione televisiva della Santa
Sindone in programma per sabato 30 marzo, è previsto un grande incontro al mattino di sabato 16
marzo, alle ore 9.30, presso la Chiesa del Santo Volto a Torino. Sono particolarmente chiamati a
raccolta tutti i volontari della Sindone e tutti coloro che sono nella luce della gioia pasquale per
ascoltare quali sono i rapporti che corrono tra la realtà sindonica e la fede. Ci sarà l’intervento
dell’Arcivescovo, poi la conferenza di Enzo Bianchi, Priore di Bose, su “Gesù servo di Dio
affidabile”, seguirà l’intervento di monsignor Giuseppe Ghiberti, Presidente la Commissione, il
tutto coordinato da Marco Bonatti direttore del settimanale “La Voce del Popolo” che illustrerà i
motivi e lo svolgimento dell’ostensione stessa.

interrogare credenti e non
credenti. È l’“oggetto” più
studiato al mondo, la “reliquia”
più importante della cristianità,
oltre che vera “icona del Sabato
Santo”, come magistralmente la
definì Benedetto XVI nel corso
della sua visita a Torino, per l’ostensione del 2010. Quest’espressione è stata richiamata da monsignor
Domenico Pompili, sottosegretario della Conferenza Episcopale Italiana e direttore dell’Ufficio Comunicazioni
sociali della Cei, nel suo saluto al Convegno “Sindone e Nuova Evangelizzazione”, svoltosi nei giorni scorsi a
Roma, presso l’Ateneo Pontificio Regina Apostolorum. Il Convegno, organizzato da tempo, ha costituito
un’introduzione ideale alla speciale ostensione televisiva che, dopo il precedente del 1973, avrà luogo su Rai 1 il
prossimo Sabato Santo, 30 marzo. “Tutto il programma sarà volto a costruire una partecipazione intensa del
pubblico – ha spiegato Pompili –, aiutandolo ad entrare, unitamente ai presenti in Duomo, nel profondo e
nell’attualità di questo mistero millenario”.
Pompili ha anche anticipato che il programma durerà un’ora e mezza e sarà suddiviso in tre parti: “La prima avrà
il suo culmine in un minuto di silenzio assoluto di adorazione di fronte al Sacro Telo”. Nella seconda
“s’alterneranno letture di brani delle Sacre Scritture e brevi intermezzi strumentali, e si concluderà, dopo l’omelia
dell’arcivescovo di Torino, monsignor Cesare Nosiglia, con alcune testimonianze forti di gente comune, a
sottolineare quanto la Passione del Cristo abbia continui riverberi nelle sofferenze e nei travagli delle esistenze
umane”. Nella terza “assisteremo alla processione davanti al sacro lino di circa 300 persone, scelte a
rappresentare ogni categoria della comunità cristiana”. Il Convegno “Sindone e Nuova Evangelizzazione”
Promosso dall’Ateneo Pontificio Regina Apostolorum, dall’Istituto Scienza e Fede e da Othonia – Diploma in Studi
Sindonici e inserito nel calendario degli eventi dell’Anno della Fede, ha goduto dei Patrocini dei Pontifici Consigli
della Cultura e per la Promozione della Nuova Evangelizzazione, dell’Ufficio Comunicazioni Sociali della
Conferenza Episcopale Italiana e dell’Istituto Veritatis Splendor di Bologna.
Nella lettera di saluto indirizzata ai partecipanti, monsignor Rino Fisichella, presidente del Pontificio Consiglio per
la Nuova Evangelizzazione, ha notato che “la Sindone è veramente uno strumento efficace di nuova
evangelizzazione, in quanto provoca l’uomo contemporaneo ponendogli molte domande e offrendogli altrettante
risposte”. L’evento, che ha riunito alcuni tra i più importanti studiosi della Sindone, è stato dedicato al Papa
emerito Benedetto XVI e ha inteso rimettere al centro Cristo nei primi due giorni di Sede Vacante. Secondo padre
Rafael Pascual, direttore dall’Istituto Scienza e Fede, la Sindone “è il segno del Sabato Santo, del silenzio di Dio
che precede l’alba della Pasqua e della vita nuova in Cristo”. Anche guardando alla Sindone solo come a “un
lenzuolo che ha avvolto il corpo martoriato di un uomo morto dopo atroci sofferenze”, ha osservato monsignor
Franco Perazzolo, officiale del Pontificio Consiglio della Cultura, “questo mi fa pensare che nell’istante più fragile

dell’ignoto è uno stimolo ad approfondire la mia fede”.
Sindone e Kérygma Due le sessioni in cui si è articolato il Convegno: Sindone e Kérygma – Sindone e
Comunicazione. Nella prima sono stati declinati i vari passaggi del Credo riferiti alla passione e morte di Cristo.
Padre Hector Guerra, presidente di Othonia, ha additato la Sindone come “cronaca grafica e complementare dei
Vangeli, carica di oggettività e realismo”. Il medico legale Pierluigi Baima Bollone ha illustrato le numerose ferite –
da taglio, da flagellazione e perforazione da chiodi a polsi e piedi, oltre a lesioni e contusioni diffuse – emerse in
anni di analisi sull’uomo della Sindone. Il sindonologo padre Gianfranco Berbenni ha rilevato che “la ricerca sulla
Sindone avviene in dialogo costante con il Vangelo e i testi Sacri”. Secondo monsignor Giuseppe Ghiberti,
assistente del Custode della Sindone, “la posizione più prudente e realistica oggi si può riassumere così: c’è
un’altissima probabilità – confinante con la sicurezza morale – della ‘autenticità’ della Sindone, mentre non si può
parlare di certezza scientifica assoluta”.
Sindone e Comunicazione “Sindone oggetto di fede e di venerazione, o oggetto di interesse scientifico e di
studio?” si è chiesto Bruno Barberis, professore di Fisica Matematica all’Università di Torino e Direttore del
Centro Internazionale di Sindonologia, inaugurando la seconda sessione dei lavori, incentrata su Sindone e
Comunicazione, che ha indagato i rapporti del Sacro Telo con Tv e cinema. Marco Aleotti, regista di Porta a
Porta, ha narrato l’emozione di riprendere la Sindone, esperienza che ha vissuto prima dell’ostensione del 2010.
Alberto Di Giglio, docente di cinema religioso, ha invece introdotto alcune sequenze tratte da capolavori della
cinematografia di tutti i tempi, nei quali appaiono la Sindone, o il martirio di Gesù. Tra di essi: “Christus” di Giulio
Antamoro (1916), “Golgotha” di Julienne Duvivier (1935), “Messia” di Roberto Rossellini, “Gesù di Nazaret” di
Franco Zeffirelli, “The Passion” di Mel Gibson e infine “I Cavalieri che fecero l’impresa” di Pupi Avati.
Non sono mancati momenti di altissima intensità artistica, come l’esibizione del Coro e Orchestra del Centro
Studi Superiori dei Legionari di Cristo, diretto da monsignor Marco Frisina, o la lettura di passi dei Papi sulla
Sindone, da parte di Rosario Tronnolone, giornalista di Radio Vaticana (Paolo VI), dell’attore Michele Placido
(Giovanni Paolo II) e dello speaker Rai Piero Bernacchi (Benedetto XVI). È stato infine ricordato come la fede
non dipenda dalla Sindone, ma dalla risurrezione di Cristo. La Sindone è però legata a questo momento cruciale

forte spiritualità: con le parole di Benedetto XVI e
l'impegno di monsignor Nosiglia. In arrivo

In questi giorni densi di grandezza e di mistero, ecco l’ultimo dono di
Benedetto XVI all’Arcidiocesi di Torino e al mondo: l’Ostensione
televisiva della Sindone il 30 marzo, Sabato Santo. La tramissione
curata dalla Rai e in onda nel programma A sua Immagine. Il cardinale
Severino Poletto, Arcivescovo emerito di Torino, racconta La Stampa
come nel suo ultimo recentissimo saluto personale, alla fine del
pontificato, il Papa emerito gli abbia ricordato la visita alla Sindone a
Torino il 2 maggio 2010.

"Mi auguro che questo evento mondiale possa portare nel cuore di tante persone che lo vedranno un po' di luce e
di pace in questi tempi complessi e dia forza e speranza a tanti poveri e malati, ma anche a famiglie e persone in
difficoltà». ha detto l'arcivescovo di Torino, monsignor Cesare Nosiglia, che ricordato come da tempo avevammo
riflettuto su questo progetto «con le competenti autorità della Santa Sede » e di avere ottenuto «il placet di
Benedetto XVI, che ci ha incoraggiati dando un taglio di evangelizzazione e di contemplazione all'evento, in modo
da favorire nei fedeli un momento di grandi spiritualità proprio nella Settimana Santa.
Ratzinger aveva visto già in diverse occasioni da vicino il Telo sindonico, ma quella volta disse: “Vivo questo
pellegrinaggio e questa sosta con particolare intensità: forse perché il passare degli anni mi rende ancora più
sensibile al messaggio di questa straordinaria Icona; forse, e direi soprattutto, perché sono qui come Successore
di Pietro, e porto nel mio cuore tutta la Chiesa, anzi, tutta l’umanità”. Benedetto XVI definì la Sindone “l’Icona del
Sabato Santo”.
Di fronte a quel lenzuolo affascinante e misterioso, osservato a lungo, in silenzio, pronunciò queste parole: "Se
migliaia e migliaia di persone vengono a venerarla – senza contare quanti la contemplano mediante le immagini –
è perché in essa non vedono solo il buio, ma anche la luce; non tanto la sconfitta della vita e dell’amore, ma
piuttosto la vittoria, la vittoria della vita sulla morte, dell’amore sull’odio; vedono sì la morte di Gesù, ma
intravedono la sua Risurrezione; in seno alla morte pulsa ora la vita, in quanto vi inabita l’amore.
Questo è il potere della Sindone: dal volto di questo Uomo dei dolori, che porta su di sé la passione dell’uomo di
ogni tempo e di ogni luogo, anche le nostre passioni, le nostre sofferenze, le nostre difficoltà, i nostri peccati –
Passio Christi. Passio hominis – da questo volto promana una solenne maestà, una signoria paradossale.
Questo volto, queste mani e questi piedi, questo costato, tutto questo corpo parla, è esso stesso una parola che
possiamo ascoltare nel silenzio. Come parla la Sindone? Parla con il sangue, e il sangue è la vita! La Sindone è
un’Icona scritta col sangue; sangue di un uomo flagellato, coronato di spine, crocifisso e ferito al costato destro.
L’immagine impressa sulla Sindone è quella di un morto, ma il sangue parla della sua vita. (…) E’ come una
sorgente che mormora nel silenzio, e noi possiamo sentirla, possiamo ascoltarla, nel silenzio del Sabato Santo”.
E il prossimo Sabato Santo – “il giorno del nascondimento di Dio”, lo ha chiamato Benedetto XVI - potremo riudire
la Sindone parlare al mondo. Parola da ascoltare nel silenzio, nel ricordo di quella storica visita, in comunione con
il mondo intero. E con il nuovo Successore di san Pietro. Si tratta della seconda «Ostensione» televisiva del sacro
Lino, dopo quella del 1973 trasmessa in diretta dal Salone degli Svizzeri di Palazzo Reale. Questa volta la
"diretta" sarà dal Duomo di Torino, durante un momento di preghiera presieduto da monsignor Nosiglia, alla
presenza di circa 300 fedeli
La Sindone durante l'ostensione non abbandonerà mai il lettino su cui è stesa, che verrà tolto dalla teca e
sollevato per renderla visibile, e resterà nella cappella che diventerà a sua volta una sorta di grande teca in cui
saranno garantiti tutti i parametri ottimali necessari alla sua conservazione. Nell'anno della Fede la sindone diventa anche 2.0: si sta studiando un'apposita app che consentirà per la prima
volta di vedere la reliquia direttamente su smarthphone e tablet, con la possibilità di zoommare sui punti che

Lo scienziato padovano espone i suoi ultimi esperimenti.
I risultati escono ora negli Stati Uniti. Fanti: il lenzuolo
impresso da un’enorme energia
Per spiegare il segreto della Sindone servirebbero molti fulmini,
forse cinquanta. Questo stando alle ricerche che alcuni ingegneri
dell’Università di Padova conducono da sette anni per capire
come si è formata la misteriosa immagine conservata nel duomo
di Torino e venerata come corpo di Cristo dal 1147, quando Luigi
VII re di Francia la vide la prima volta nella cappella del palazzo
imperiale di Costantinopoli. Le ricerche continuano nonostante i

Il professor Fanti, già fondatore del Centro Interdipartimentale Studi e Attività Spaziali
«CISAS G. Colombo», membro di gruppi internazionali per missioni spaziali e autore di tre libri
sugli studi eseguiti per la Sindone, illustra gli oltre cento esperimenti che ha ideato: «Usiamo un
tessuto simil sindonico prodotto dall’azienda torinese Liotex; lino con identico numero di fili e
tramatura a spina di pesce della Sindone. Spalmato di olio, lo adagiamo sotto e sopra un manichino
in scala 1:2 rivestito di vernice conduttrice a base di rame. Col manichino al centro di un campo
elettrico attiviamo tante micro scariche: si determina così una luminescenza che genera sul tessuto
macchie simili a quelle presenti sulla Sindone; solo che le nostre si concentrano in porzioni di 15
centimetri di lino in corrispondenza della testa e delle braccia. Per "impressionare" l’intero
manichino alto un metro, la potenza andrebbe centuplicata». L’impronta della Sindone, secondo
Giulio Fanti, sarebbe l’effetto di una fortissima energia sprigionatasi per brevi istanti, come
dimostra quella riprodotta in scala nel laboratorio padovano. «Credo che sia il prodotto dell’"effetto
corona", qualcosa di simile alla scarica elettrica che genera ozono, un riscaldamento di circa 10
gradi, una luminescenza e un effetto acustico».
Così come sul sacro lenzuolo, anche su quello usato a Padova, le macchie formatesi non sono
superficiali, ma interne al tessuto. Per il docente, nel caso della Sindone la radiazione è stata

spessore di 200 nanometri (una misura infinitesimale), come se l’energia fosse venuta dall’interno

Fabio Crosilla dell’Università di Udine, Marco Riani dell’Università di Parma e Atkinsons di Londra,

de la Sábana Santa

La Sábana Santa, uno de los objetos más estudiados por el
hombre en su historia.
Un trozo de 4,30 metros por 1,10 metros de lino viejo manchado de sangre, con una extraña imagen del cuerpo de un hombre con visibles signos de tortura.
La cristiandad la atribuye a Jesús de Nazaret.
La ciencia forense ha demostrado que esta tela en algún momento de su historia cubrió a un hombre que sufrió una tortura
que se corresponde con los datos que mantiene el cristianismo:
La coronación, la flagelación, la lanzada y crucifixión.
La imagen es anatómicamente correcta, sin fallo alguno, contiene datos que no habían sido conocidos por el hombre hasta
el S. XX. Pero es la formación de la misma, a la que el hombre
del S. XXI sigue sin dar respuesta.
La extraña imagen de la sábana santa posee 9 características a
las que la ciencia no puede dar explicación.
Por primera vez en la historia una exposición itinerante analiza
este objeto lleno de ciencia misterio y fe. Mostrado el cuerpo
que aparece impreso en ella, con total detalle científico forense.
La Historia
La exposición lleva al espectador a un recorrido de análisis histórico,
aportando diferentes elementos que certifican que la Sábana ya existía antes de la datación del carbono 14, que la hacechó entre Siglos
XIII y XIV incluyendo los nuevos estudios que certifican las alteraciones
y posibles errores de la datación.
El arte, la historia, la arqueología, la ciencia forense y científica, junto
con códices, monedas y diferentes objetos recogidos a lo largo de un
gran estudio y monografía, se muestran por primera vez conjuntos en
esta exposición única e itinerante que recorrerá las principales ciudades del mundo.
Sepulcro
En el año 70 dc. Jerusalén fue destruida por el general romano Tito y
no quedo piedra sobre piedra como
predijo Jesús. Del sepulcro de Jesús
no quedo nada. Solo el posible lugar
sobre el que hoy está levantada una
iglesia, La iglesia del Santo sepulcro.
Esta reconstrucción a escala real ha
sido realizada en base a los estudios
aportados por el arqueólogo agustino Florentino Diez Fernández. Quien
pudo explorar la llamada cueva de
Adán. Sus estudios, están considerados como los más completos realizados sobre tierra santa.
Forense
La muestra analiza los dos únicos objetos que han superado pruebas
científicas y que han llegado a nuestros días como elementos que pudieron pertenecer a Jesús de Nazaret, y que han llevado a muchos al
error ó a creer que hay varias sábanas o varios sudarios.
El Santo Sudario de Oviedo, según la traducción cristiana cubrió el
rostro de Jesús tras su muerte en la cruz y La Sábana Santa que pudo
envolver su cuerpo.
Por primera vez, son comparados y analizados conjuntamente, en un
estudio científico forense, proporcionando datos sorprendentes de su
posible portador.
Los datos son atroces y la ciencia forense no deja duda, la sábana envolvió el cuerpo de un hombre que sufrió una tortura extrema. Compatibles con la historia y muerte narrada de Jesús de Nazaret.
Es la misteriosa imagen a la que la ciencia no puede dar una respuesta
a su formación y características.

Esta pieza es totalmente aclaratoria y no estaba pensada. Tratamos e imprimimos
la Sábana Santa digitalmente eliminado las quemaduras y dejando solo la sangre,
Miñarro envolvió el cuerpo.
El resultado es un perfecto amortajamiento judío, cuerpo y sábana son compatibles, todo coincide, las heridas de sangre, las proporciones, incluso gotas de sangre
que se creían en el pelo en realidad pertenecen a al rostro al tener un volumen tridimensional. solo 1 cm más grande cuerpo o sábana y nada coincidirá.
Los enterramientos judíos en el siglo I
se realizaban principalmente en cuevas excavadas sobre rocas , los sepulcros judíos tenían dos cavidades En la
primera sala se realizaban la limpieza,
aromatización y unción del cuerpo con
especies aromáticas. Después el cuerpo era colocado en la segunda sala
donde permanecería hasta ser purificado. La piedra grande de tallada
redonda para su fácil manipulación,
tapaba la entrada impidiendo la entrada de los animales.
La muestra incluye los nuevos estudios realizados por la investigadora
Marcia Boi, quien ha identificado que
la mayor parte de pólenes entomófilos
de la sábana santa, se corresponden a
preciosos aceites y resinas de galbano
aromático, laudano y de otras plantas
mediterráneas plantas utilizas para
producir aceites y ungüentos funerarios en siglo I.
Las resinas eran quemadas utilizadas
para purificar “desinfectar” el ambiente y los aceites eran aplicados en el
cuerpo para purificar “desinfectar” e
impedir que se acercasen insectos.
Se ha conseguido reproducir estas
resinas y aceites. De tal modo que el
sepulcro permite acercarnos al olor de
los ungüentos funerarios utilizados en
los enterramientos del siglo I.

en el estudio del rostro y cuerpo del hombre de La Sábana Santa, sus estudios están considerados como la imagen más cercana a el hombre de la
Síndone. Utilizando técnicas forenses y antropomórficas ha realizado una de las piezas claves de esta exposición con total detalle científico forense.

La sábana es totalmente ajena al arte, no hay ningún canon.
Escapa a todo lo conocido en nuestra historia artística.
Solo cabe una explicación para su reproducción, realizar a un
hombre todas y cada una de las torturas que certificarían los datos forenses, aun así tendríamos dos cuestiones claves sin resolver

La obra fue realizada en talla de madera por escultor.
Miñarro utilizo técnicas de comparación y proyección de imagen
de la sabana contra el cuerpo y la hora de las impresiones y policromía los distintos tipos de sangre y su comportamiento venal
arterial. Incluso la lividez de la piel corresponde al color que tendría un cadáver a las seis horas de su muerte.
La exposición fue inaugurada en febrero 2012 en la catedral de
Málaga, y recorrerá las principales ciudades del mundo.
Creyentes o no creyentes podrán ver esta exposición, que roza el
alma despierta el corazón y reta a la inteligencia.
En sistema audio guía Dolby digital en 5 idiomas, con una
fascinante producción musical locutada. El espectador camina
a través de 12 salas descubriendo una historia única. La historia
jamás contada.

miles de visitantes llega a Sevilla. “La exposición de la Sábana Santa” se trata de una
muestra donde la importancia reside en el estudio del cuerpo que muestra la
Sábana Santa de Turín, el objeto religioso más venerado de la cristiandad.

Permanecerá en Sevilla desde el 6 de Marzo hasta el 28 de Junio de 2013.El lugar
donde se podrá ver esta singular muestra será el Antiquarium, es decir, las salas de
la denominada “Setas” de la Plaza de la Encarnación. Entre los objetos de
exposición se podrá contemplar reproducciones de la Sábana Santa de una calidad
inigualable, su relación con el Sudario de Oviedo –que tuvo su paso por Sevilla-, la
obra del profesor Juan Manuel Miñarro en torno al cuerpo del Hombre de la
Sábana Santa, reproducciones de los elementos de la Pasión o del sepulcro donde se
alojó el cuerpo así como diferentes bustos y máscaras que reproducen el verdadero
rostro del ajusticiado.

cruz ,tras un castigo brutal es obligado a llevar un madero hasta el lugar de su

Nuova ostensione della Sindone. L'ENEA:
non può essere un falso medievale
E' davvero il lenzuolo che ha avvolto il corpo di
Cristo nel sepolcro, oppure si tratta di
un'ingegnosa opera d'arte concepita da un
eccentrico artista del medioevo? Parliamo della
Sindone, una delle reliquie più controverse della
storia della cristianità e l'occasione ci è offerta
dalla prossima ostensione “telematica” che verrà
trasmessa in HD su Rai Uno il prossimo 30
marzo, Sabato Santo.
Ma sarà possibile osservare il Lino anche sugli
smartphone e sui tablet grazie ad
un'applicazione che verrà diffusa negli store
virtuali.
Quella della Sacra Sindone è una vicenda lunga e tormentata che ancora oggi non
riesce a mettere d'accordo che crede che il lino sia l'autentico sudario che avvolse Gesù
nel breve soggiorno nella tomba, e chi invece ritiene che si tratti della creazione di un
artista del medioevo. Secondo alcuni, ci sarebbe lo zampino di quel grande genio che fu
Leonardo da Vinci.
A partire dal 1898, anno in cui fu scattata la prima immagine fotografica della Sindone
dall'avvocato Secondo Pia, il lenzuolo è stato sottoposto a numerosi esami. Eppure,
nonostante le analisi dettagliate, la reliquia non vuole saperne di svelare i suoi segreti.
L'ultimo studio è stato eseguito dai tecnici dell'ENEA alla fine del 2011, i quali non
hanno dubbi: la Sindone non è un falso medievali e resta un enigma per la scienza,
non riproducibile in laboratorio.

La Sindone è un lenzuolo di lino lungo 4,41
metri e largo 1,13, tessuto con una trama
a spina di pesce, sul quale è impressa la
doppia immagine del cadavere di un uomo
morto dopo aver subito una serie di atroci
torture culminate nella crocefissione.
L'immagine impressa sul telo è circondata
da due strisce nere e da alcuni lembi
mancanti dovuti all'incendio avvenuto nel
1532 a Chambery. Per caratteristiche della
sua impronta, secondo la tradizione più
antica si tratterebbe de lenzuolo citato nei
Vangeli che servì ad avvolgere il corpo
defunto di Gesù Cristo nella tomba. Tuttavia, nonostante i numerosi riscontri scientifici
offerti dalle analisi scientifiche, la sua provenienza non può ancora definirsi provata.
La stessa Chiesa Cattolica, infatti, prudentemente considera la Sindone, più che a prova
visibile dell'esistenza storica di Gesù di Nazareth e della sua resurrezione, come il
rimando più diretto ed immediato alla drammatica conclusione della sua vita. Una delle
definizioni più efficaci è stata offerta da Giovanni Paolo II, il quale definì il lino come lo

La storia della Sindone
Le prime testimonianze sicure sulla Sindone risalgono al XIV secolo, quando il cavaliere
Geoffry de Charmy depose il lenzuolo nella chiesa da lui eretta nel 1353 nel suo feudo
di Lirey, in Francia. Durante la prima metà del Cinquecento, Marguerite de Charmy tolse
il lino dalla Chiesa di Lirey a causa dell'aggravarsi della Guerra dei Cent'anni,
portandolo con sé nel suo lungo peregrinare per l'Europa.
Trovando accoglienza presso la corte dei duchi di Savoia, Marguerite trasferì la
proprietà della Sindone ai Savoia, attraverso una serie di atti giuridici. Il lenzuolo venne
riposto nella Saint Chapelle du Saint Suaire e i Savoia richiesero e ottennero da papa
Giulio II il riconoscimento di una festa liturgica propria.
Ma il 4 dicembre 1532 un incendio devastò la Sainte Chapelle, causando gravi danni al
lenzuolo, i quali furono riparati alla meglio nel 1534 dalle Suore Clarisse della città. Fu
Emanuele Filiberto a trasferire definitivamente la Sindone a Torino nel 1578, dove vi
rimase nei secoli seguenti, divenendo oggetto di numerose ostensioni pubbliche e
private. Ne sono testimonianza i numerosi dipinti presenti a Torino e in molti paesi del
ducato.
Anche nella sua ultima collocazione la Sindone ha dovuto affrontare un nuovo
drammatico incendio scoppiato la notte tra venerdì 11 e sabato 12 aprile 1997nella
Cappella della Sindone posta tra la Cattedrale torinese e Palazzo Reale. Pur non
essendo la Sindone e la sua teca interessate dal fuoco dell’incendio, nel corso di quella
notte fu deciso di rompere la struttura di cristallo e di portare via la Sindone, onde
evitare sia i rischi di un crollo anche solo parziale della cupola della cappella, sia i
possibili danni provocati dall’acqua degli idranti usati dai vigili del fuoco.

La ricerca scientifica
Dalla prima foto scattata da Secondo Pia più di cento anni fa, lo studio della Sindone è
proseguito ininterrottamente sino ad oggi. Nel 1966 fu costituita la prima commissione
di studio; nel 1978 furono eseguiti alcuni esami approfonditi da parte di un team di
ricercatori americani dello STURP (Shroud of Turin Research Project) alla fine di
una delle ostensioni pubbliche.

Misterioso oggetto infuocato
Nel 1988 arrivò il controverso risultato della prima datazione al radiocarbonio che
collocava il lino tra il XIII e il XIV secolo, smorzando gli entusiasmi di chi voleva che la
Sindone fosse l'autentico lenzuolo di Gesù. Poco dopo, però, un gruppo di ricercatori
laici invitò a prendere con prudenza i risultati della datazione, in quanto l'incendio del
1532 poteva aver alterato la struttura atomica e molecolare del lino, falsando così il
risultato.
Nel 1998, Avinoam Danin, un botanico israeliano, dichiarò di aver identificato 28
specie di fiori diversi sulla Sindone durante l'ostensione di quell'anno. Secondo i suoi
studi, l'unico luogo in cui esse sono presenti tutte insieme sarebbe una ristretta area
tra Gerusalemme e Gerico.
Un'altra studiosa di pollini, Marzia Boi, ricercatrice presso l’Università delle Isole
Baleari, mette in rilievo con chiarezza il fatto che i pollini testimoniano che il lenzuolo
custodito a Torino aveva una caratteristica ben precisa: era un lenzuolo funerario,
utilizzato secondo rituali presenti nell’area del Medio oriente da oltre due millenni.

L'enigma dell'immagine impressa
L'ultimo studio sulla Sindone è stato pubblicato nel 2011 dall'ENEA, frutto di cinque
anni di esperimenti svolti nel centro di Frascati. Oggetto dello studio è “la colorazione
simil-sindonica di tessuti di lino tramite radiazione nel lontano ultravioletto”: in soldoni,
gli scienziati hanno cercato di capire in che modo possa essersi impressa l'immagine sul

colorazione simile a quella della Sindone.
Lo studio firmato dai ricercatori Di Lazzaro, Murra, Santoni; Nichelatti e Baldacchini
giunge ad una clamorosa conclusione: la Sindone non può essere un falso medievale!
Così si legge in uno stralcio dello Studio riportato nel resoconto offerto da
vaticaninsider.lastampa.it:
“La doppia immagine (frontale e dorsale) di un uomo flagellato e
crocifisso, visibile a malapena sul lenzuolo di lino della Sindone di Torino
presenta numerose caratteristiche fisiche e chimiche talmente peculiari
che rendono ad oggi impossibile ottenere in laboratorio una colorazione
identica in tutte le sue sfaccettature, come discusso in numerosi articoli,
elencati nelle referenze.

impedisce di formulare un’ipotesi attendibile sul meccanismo di formazione

Un mistero archeologico
irrisolto
Gli scienzito sono partiti dall'ultimo (e unico) esame completo compiuto nel 1978 dal
team di scienziati dello STURP, uno studio che non si tiene in debito conto quando si
ragiona sulla Sindone. I ricercatori americani conclusero che l'immagine corporea
impressa sul lino non è dipinta, nè stampata, nè ottenuta tramite riscaldamento.

Gli scienziati utilizzarono strumentazioni all'avanguardia per l'epoca effettuando
numerose misure di spettroscopia infrarossa, visibile ed ultravioletta, di fluorescenza a
raggi X, di termografia e pirolisi, di spettrometria, ecc...

Non furono trovare tracce di pigmenti o di disegni. Le indagini rivelarono che lo
spessore della colorazione delle fibre di lino è estremamente sottile, pari a circa 200
nanometri (200 miliardesimi di metro), corrispondente allo spessore della parete
cellulare della singola fibrilla di lino.

Ma allora, se non è stata dipinta, nè impressa con il calore, cosa può aver generato
l'immagine? E' quello che si sono chiesti i ricercatori dell'ENEA, compiendo una serie di
esperiementi con il laser che ha offerto dei risultati assolutamente strabilianti.

“La misura di radio datazione effettuata con il carbonio 14, per esempio, ha collocato
l’origine del telo in pieno medioevo (1260 – 1390) ma questa misura sembra aver
sofferto sia di errori materiali di calcolo sia di problemi di contaminazione”, spiega il
dottor Paolo di Lazzaro, responsabile del Laboratorio Eccimeri del Centro Ricerche ENEA
di Frascati, in una intervista pubblicata sul sito dell'ENEA.

Il principale interrogativo, però, sembra riguardare la realizzazione di questa immagine
che ha caratteristiche chimiche e fisiche praticamente impossibili da replicare oggi, e a
maggior ragione nel medioevo o in tempi più remoti. “La curiosità è una delle
caratteristiche principali degli scienziati. Di fronte all’immagine sindonica, invece di
porci la domanda sul 'quando',ci siamo chiesti 'come'”, continua Di Lazzaro. “I risultati
ottenuti sono andati oltre ogni nostra aspettativa”.
Gli esperimenti hanno dimostrato che un impulso di luce ultravioletta estremamente
breve (pochi miliardesimi di secondo) in un intervallo ristrettissimo di valori di energia e
densità di potenza è in grado di colorare con la stessa cromaticità dell’immagine
sindonica il tessuto di lino in modo molto superficiale, in pratica solo gli strati più
esterni del singolo filo di lino.
Più precisamente, ciascun filo di lino (che ha un diametro di circa 0,3 millimetri) è
composto da circa 200 fibrille. I ricercatori sono riusciti a colorare il primo strato di
fibrille esposto alla luce laser, il cosiddetto “primary cell wall” della fibrilla di lino, una
pellicola sottilissima spessa 0,2 micrometri che circonda la fibrilla, lasciando la parte
interna della stessa fibrilla non colorata. Questa è una delle caratteristiche
dell’immagine sindonica più difficili da replicare.

La procedura per trovare i giusti parametri laser adatti a colorare i tessuti di lino in
modo simile alla Sindone ha richiesto circa due anni di tentativi. I ricercatori, infatti,
hanno scoperto con sorpresa che è sufficiente una piccola variazione dei parametri laser
per non ottenere più la colorazione.

Il volume, «Il mistero della Sindone» è edito da Rizzoli (240 pagine, 18 euro).
La novità più importante del libro è rappresentata dalle recenti ricerche di Fanti, che stanno per essere
pubblicate anche su una rivista specializzata e dunque sottoposte al giudizio di un comitato scientifico. Si
tratta di tre nuove analisi, due chimiche e una meccanica. Le prime due sono state effettuate una con
sistema FT-IR, cioè con luce infrarosso e l’altra con la spettroscopia Raman. La terza è invece un’analisi

meccanica multi-parametrica, basata su cinque parametri meccanici diversi riguardanti la tensione del
filo. Per questa indagini delle fibre sindoniche è stata realizzata un’originale macchina per prove di
trazione in grado di valutare fibre estremamente piccole sono state analizzate insieme a una ventina di
campioni di tessuti di età certa dal 3000 avanti Cristo al 2000 dopo Cristo.

Le nuove analisi, compiute nei laboratori dell’università di Padova, hanno coinvolto diversi docenti
universitari di vari atenei italiani, e concordano nell’affermare che il la Sindone risale a un tempo

compatibile con quello in cui Gesù Cristo fu crocifisso a Gerusalemme. I risultati conclusivi indicano per
le fibre della Sindone in esame le seguenti date, tutte al livello di confidenza del 95 per cento, e tutte
lontane dalla datazione medievale ottenuta nel 1988 con l’esame del Carbonio14: per l’analisi FT-IR la

un’incertezza - osservano gli autori del libro - inferiore alle singole incertezze, compatibile con la data
storica della morte di Gesù Cristo attribuita dagli storici all’anno 30 dell’era moderna.
Gli esami sono stati effettuali utilizzando piccole fibre sindoniche provenienti dal materiale aspirato dalla
Sindone dal micro-analista Giovanni Riggi di Numana, scomparso nel 2008, che partecipò alle ricerche
del 1988 e che aveva donato questi materiali a Fanti attraverso la Fondazione 3M.

“La Sindone è vera”. Ecco le nuove conferme della scienza
Due team, uno delle Università di Padova, Modena e Bologna, l’altro dell’Enea di
Frascati, hanno dimostrato che la Sindone è vera. E diffondono i risultati delle
loro indagini, attraverso il settimanale Oggi

La Sindone è vera. Così, almeno, a giudicare dai nuovi risultati choc rivelati dall’indagine di
due team di scienziati. Che pubblicano su Oggi in edicola da mercoledì i risultati delle loro
approfondite indagini.
LE NUOVE PROVE – Due team, uno delle Università di Padova, Modena e Bologna, l’altro
dell’Enea di Frascati, hanno dimostrato che la Sindone è vera. E diffondo i risultati delle
loro indagini, attraverso il settimanale Oggi, a pochi giorni dall’ostensione televisiva del
Sacro Lino con l’effigie di Gesù di sabato 30 marzo.

SMENTITO IL CARBONIO 14 - A Padova, il professor Giulio Fanti ha datato nuovamente
il telo stabilendo che risale al I secolo a.C. con uno scarto di 250 anni, prima o dopo. Un
periodo, in ogni caso, ben lontano da quello ipotizzato nel 1988 dai tre laboratori che
svolsero le analisi con il Carbonio 14: Oxford, Zurigo e Tuscson (Arizona). Venticinque anni
fa sembrava dimostrato che il lino fosse un tessuto medioevale, ma l’esperimento è stato
inficiato da problemi di contaminazione. Fanti non ha usato il C14, ma tre altri metodi:
Spettroscopia Raman e Spettroscopia Infrarossa a trasformata di Fourier, e uno strumento
per la “datazione meccanica” del filo di lino.

LA FIBRA - Naturalmente, per poter definire l’età del campione sindonico è stato
necessario effettuare prima analisi dello stesso tipo su altri brandelli di lino, undici in tutto,
provenienti da varie e accertate epoche storiche (Antico Regno egizio, Medioevo, Era
moderna ecc.). Così si è potuta costruire una scala di valori cui mettere in relazione la
fibra del lenzuolo di Gesù.

LE BRUCIATURE: UN LAMPO STRAORDINARIO - Oggi rivela anche che a Frascati,
grazie a un laser a eccimeri, sono stati riprodotti da un team dell’Enea su un lenzuolo
(moderno) le stesse caratteristiche “bruciature” presenti sul “sacro lino”. Avvalorando la
tesi che fu un lampo di straordinaria intensità a impressionarlo per sempre. «Nel 2005
cominciammo a fare degli irraggiamenti sul lino variando il numero dei “colpi” (laser, ndr),
la distanza tra di essi e l’intensità», spiega il ricercatore Paolo Di Lazzaro, «ma il tessuto si
bruciava completamente oppure non succedeva nulla».
DOPO LE PROVE, LA CONFERMA - Prova e riprova, arriva il successo. «Il segreto stava
nella durata dei singoli colpi, non dovevamo superare i 50 miliardesimi di secondo». La
formula magica per ricreare l’Uomo della Sindone è stata poi completata, in laboratorio,

con un altro parametro: la lunghezza d’onda del raggio laser, che dà la tonalità della
colorazione. «Con gli UV si otteneva un giallo scuro o marroncino, per ottenere il
cosiddetto “giallo sindonico” abbiamo dovuto lavorare nel campo del Lontano
Ultravioletto».

PADOVA. La Sindone di Torino è un telo che ha avvolto
un uomo, morto in croce, trafitto nella parte destra del
costato, precedentemente percosso, flagellato e incoronato con
un copricapo di spine.
La tradizione cattolica ritiene che questo telo abbia avvolto
Gesù Cristo. Tanti sono gli studi scientifici che hanno
analizzato, scandagliato, radiografato questo telo di lino.
L’ultima ricerca in ordine di arrivo è illustrata nel libro «Il mistero
della sindone» (Rizzoli, pp.231, 18 euro), da oggi nelle librerie,
scritto da Giulio Fanti, docente di Misure meccaniche e
termiche all’Università di Padova, e dal vaticanista Saverio
Gaeta, caporedattore di Famiglia Cristiana.
Il volume è frutto di un lavoro decennale che arriva alla
conclusione che quel misterioso lino può essere davvero il
lenzuolo sepolcrale di Cristo. O almeno di un uomo morto nella
stessa identica maniera raccontata dai Vangeli, in quegli stessi
anni e nello stesso luogo, Gerusalemme.
Punto di partenza dello studio è la dimostrazione che la datazione al carbonio 14, eseguita nel 1988, che
faceva risalire al Medioevo l’epoca di realizzazione del tessuto, «è stata inficiata da clamorosi errori
metodologici».
In particolare il professor Fanti ha proposto nuove tecniche di datazione dei tessuti, realizzando anche una
macchina per prove di trazione in grado di valutare fibre estremamente piccole. Anche la polvere che è
rimasta sulla superficie risulta, da questa ricerca multidisciplinare, compatibile con quella tipica del suolo di
Gerusalemme.

«un genio» o del «testimone muto», come lo chiamava Wojtyla, «del mistero più importante per il credente:
la risurrezione».

Pope Authorizes Television Exhibition of Shroud on March 30, 2013
It was announced this morning that Pope Benedict XVI, as one of his last acts as Pontiff, has authorized a television only exhibition of the Shroud of
Turin on March 30, 2013 (Holy Saturday) directly from the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist where the cloth is permanently stored. Here is an excerpt
from an e-mail I received this morning from my friend Bruno Barberis, President of the International Center for the Study of the Shroud (Centro
Internazionale di Sindonologia) in Turin with the details:
I would like to give you in advance an important piece of news. On March 30th (Holy Saturday) in the late afternoon (Italian time) in the
Turin Cathedral there will be a TV exposition of the Holy Shroud. The exposition will be broadcast by the RAI Uno television network. This
event, connected with the "Year of Faith," will happen 40 years after the first and unique TV exposition of the Shroud on November 23rd,
1973. The Shroud will remain in its room in the Cathedral and the length of the exposition will be around one hour. On March 1st in Turin at
11.00am a press conference will be held regarding this special exposition.
It is likely that footage from this exposition will be picked up and shown by other television broadcast networks around the world and on the internet. I
will do my best to keep you updated as more details become available. In the interim, you can also check our Facebook page, where I can quickly post
any news that may come in while I am traveling and lecturing.

A video message from Pope Francis for the TV Exhibition of the Shroud
Archbishop Nosiglia’s announcement: «It will be an action of intense spiritual thickness, which will help not to lose
hope»
Pope Francis will attend with a videotaped message of Holy Saturday the TV Exhibition that RAI Uno will air worldwide.
This was announced this morning by the Archbishop of Turin, Mgr Cesare Nosiglia. «This is a message of intense spiritual
thickness - said the papal custodian of the Shroud -, that will accompany the several sick and suffering people that will be in
the cathedral or in their homes and in hospitals, and many others that will contemplate the Shroud, not to lose hope in the
love of God which is accomplished in the death and resurrection of the Lord». Nosiglia pointed out that that of the Pope is “a
gesture of goodwill towards the Turin diocese, which houses the Shroud” and called Francis «a sign of Easter resurrection
that the living Lord raised in his Church to give strength and courage of hope to his people and to all mankind». The
archbishop explained that «the Exhibition in such a special day as the Holy Saturday, wants to mean that the Shroud,
although it is not a matter of faith, is a very important testimony of the Passion and Resurrection of the Lord». And he
added: «It's a little challenge, this Exhibition, because to the logics of the show we preferred those of the content: we hope

On the occasion of the extraordinary Exhibition of the Shroud, the transmission will follow the event live worldwide on RAI
Uno on Saturday March 30, 2013 at 11.30 a.m. Italian time (10:30 a.m. GMT).
After the 2010 Exhibition, which saw the participation of 2 million pilgrims from all over the world, and 40 years after the
first TV Exhibition, broadcast live on November 23, 1973, the Shroud, through the cameras of A Sua Immagine will be seen

Rosario Carello, with guests in the studio, will reconstruct the history and the deep spiritual meaning of the Holy Cloth,
called by Benedict XVI "Icon of Holy Saturday."
We will show images of the unveiling of the Shroud, taken from the shrine in which it is placed and positioned for the
Exhibition. We will relive the moments of the past Exhibitions. We will go into the mysterious origin of this image, in order
to document the impressive correspondence with the story of the Passion of Christ in the Gospels: the sores, the blood, the

It will be the Man of the Shroud the center of the usual Good Friday episode of ‘A Sua Immagine’. Rosario Carello, with
studio guests, will draw a journey to discover the figure of Jesus. Waiting for the TV Exhibition of the Shroud, scheduled for
Saturday, March 30, during the broadcast of Friday we will rebuild the identikit of the man Jesus, starting from the linen that

reconstruct the image of Christ from the marks on the Shroud.
On Good Friday, the day full of greatness and mystery, the traces of the precious relic will lead us into the secret of the
Passion of Christ. Francesca Fialdini will lead us in the Museum of the Shroud of Turin, to show us the rebuilding of some
objects, symbol of the Passion: the crown, the nails, the cross. We will see how in the Shroud we can see not only the

The Archbishop of Turin, Mgr Cesare Nosiglia, confirms that he will make the request to Pope Francis to receive a video
message that will be transmitted on the occasion of the extraordinary TV Exhibition of the Shroud, on Holy Saturday.He
excludes instead the hypothesis, spread on social media, that the Pope can attend in person to the Exhibition.
The declaration was released to the microphones of Prima Radio on March 14, 2013. Below is the text of that declaration:
“It is impossible to come [to Turin], it is something absolutely inconceivable, because it is on Holy Saturday, it is a day in
which the Pope has the celebration at St. Peter's church, almost at that time or right after, so it would be something really
impossible. The speech was different; it concerned a televised message, also recorded, if necessary (if not that day, because
they are very intense days), of a few minutes, about the fact that he could be present during this Exhibition. The thing, I
think, was quite possible, even indicatively examined with Benedict XVI, then, obviously, happened what has happened, now
we will try to reach him too, having regard also this, let's say 'warning', that he has towards his own Piedmontese land. I
hope that we can find an answer, but I do not know, because the days are very intense, very hectic, I think, for him too, so we
do not expect nothing, absolutely. But I think that we will try to make the request, and then we will see also if it can be

The Exhibition of the Shroud, on Holy Saturday March 30, 2013, will only be "televised": there is no access to the Cathedral
except for a small group of sick people and their carers, and young people who have begun the journey of the Synod. Mgr.
Nosiglia, presenting the initiative last Friday to reporters, explained the meaning and the terms of this extraordinary "event":
to offer to television viewers all over the world images of the Shroud, in the context of their prayer of Holy Saturday, as a
chance to reflect on the suffering and death of Christ, and the pain in the contemporary world.
So this is a TV show, not a "pilgrimage to the Shroud" as the latest Exhibitions were. The broadcast will air on the afternoon
of 30 March on RAI Uno (the exact time will be specified by RAI). the public will not be able to access in any way to the
Duomo; the same Piazza San Giovanni will not be fully accessible, since it will receive, first of all, transit and parking of
vehicles transporting the sick people.
The information will be disseminated not only on the diocesan website, but also on theVoce del Popolo (Turin Diocese’s
weekly magazine) and on the website www.sindone.org and www.diocesi.torino.it.

Diocesan convention on the ‘Shroud and the life of faith’
The relationship between the veneration of the Shroud and the life of faith is at the core of the Diocesan Convention of
Saturday, March 16th at 9:30 am at the Congress Center Santo Volto, via Val della Torre 3 - Turin. Are planned the
interventions of Mgr. Cesare Nosiglia, Enzo Bianchi, Don Roberto Gottardo, Don Giuseppe Ghiberti, Marco Bonatti. The
meeting is open to all the faithful of the Diocese of Turin, with particular attention to the volunteers of the Shroud.
It will be an opportunity to reflect on the Shroud issues from a pastoral point of view, and to clarify some details on the

Not only on television, but also on the smartphone or on the tablet. In the Year of Faith organized by now "emeritus pope"

who have lost their homes or jobs. The Shroud will not be moved from the chapel where it is kept since 2000, after the fire
in 1998. Shortly before the live broadcast, it will be taken out of the shrine, and its "bed", where it is kept lying, will be lifted
in vertical position. «The optimal conditions of temperature, humidity and atmosphere inside of the shrine - ensures the
Deputy Director the International Centre of Sindonology, Gian Maria Zaccone - will be extended to the whole chapel».

interact virtually on the Shroud with four paths: a free one, which will allow the vision of the image with the deepening of its

The Shroud on television - The first Exhibition in Digital Era
Saturday, March 30, 2013, in the afternoon (Italian time) on RAI Uno television network, the liturgy presided by the
papal custodian Mgr. Cesare Nosiglia in the transmission "A sua immagine" - A proposal for prayer and reflection for
Holy Saturday, in the Year of Faith.
Holy Saturday and the Shroud: a special prayer from the Cathedral of Turin, to give the whole world the opportunity to
contemplate the Shroud. The initiative of the Archbishop and Papal Custodian Mgr. Cesare Nosiglia, in agreement with the
Holy See, is proposed to be an important stage in the journey of "new evangelization" wanted by John Paul II and continued
by Benedict XVI through the proclamation of the Year of Faith.
The television exhibition will be held in the Cathedral of Turin, where the Shroud is kept for more than three centuries: the

in the Turin Cathedral there will be a TV exposition of the Holy Shroud. The exposition will be broadcast by the RAI Uno

The Turin Archbishop's message for the preparation time for Easter 2013
Dear priests, deacons, religious and lay people of Turin Diocese,
the Lent of this Year of Faith will see us engaged in several significant moments of
celebration in the Cathedral to profess together the unity of the faith that makes us
the One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church. As the Apostle Paul reminds us in
Ephesians: « Try to keep, by the peace that binds you, that unity which comes from
the Spirit: there is only one Body, only one Spirit, as only one hope, only one Lord,
only one faith, only one baptism. There is only one God and Father of all, above all,
that in all is present and acts » (4,3-6).
In the Pastoral Letter on Baptism ‘Devi nascere di nuovo’ (You must be born again),
I remember that the profession of baptismal faith runs on a series of "no" and "yes"
that affect the whole existence of the believer and that qualify their testimony.
So now we want to express our faith also publicly, professing it to live it with the most consistent love and hope. The
Cathedral is the mother church where communion and unity of God's people, around the Bishop, takes place in the most
important moments of the liturgical year. It is therefore the place with the most symbolic and concrete unity of faith and
charity which unites us and makes us the Church that walks along time and here in our territory.
In this solemn and important occasion we also want to venerate the Holy Shroud, « icon of the Holy Saturday », as Benedict
XVI said, with acuity and depth, on his visit during the Exhibition in 2010. Beneath the Cross (tells us the Gospel of Mark)
the Roman centurion – pagan, therefore – seeing how Jesus had died, said: « Truly this was the Son of God » (Mc 15,39). It
is therefore contemplating the Crucifix that we too can say the central act of our faith in Jesus buried, who died and rose
again for the salvation of the world.
The Holy Shroud by showing us the tortured body of the Crucified and his suffering face, reminds us of the words of the
Apostle John: « God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have
eternal life » (Gv 3,16). Therefore the Shroud speaks to us not of defeat, but of victory; not of death, but of life; not of
despair, but of hope; not of darkness, but of light emanating from the Holy Linen and sustains the faith of those who believe
and live it in love.
Contemplating and praying before the Shroud, therefore we will address to the Lord our common prayer: Lord, increase our
faith. Do not allow to be less in us the joy and enthusiasm to believe that You are here, in your Church, and operate
wonderful things even amid the storms of a reality that seems more and more taking many people away from faith in You.
Give us a heart open to the acceptance, courage in the search for who ignores you and wisdom to find ways for an effective
new evangelization in our land.
To the Blessed Virgin Consulated, patroness of the diocese, we will rely our profession of faith and the will to make it a new
life for us and for every person we meet in everyday of our lives.
So I shall expect you with joy and I hope that we can live together strong moments of prayer, communion and true fraternity.

I am always thrilled to see positive news about the Shroud in the popular media, rather than the negative, skeptical attacks that
DropDownDeals
happen so frequently, and particularly at this time of year. Yet the past few days have been filled with positive stories! Not only is
the Shroud to be publicly exhibited on television this coming Saturday, March 30, 2013, but the event will be introduced by Pope
Francis himself. You can find details on the exhibition in the articles we first posted on February 27, 2013, below.
The latest news is about a new Italian language book (released today) titled, Il Mistero della Sindone (The Mystery of the
Shroud), and co-authored by our friend Giulio Fanti and Italian journalist Savero Gaeta and published by Rizzoli, an important
Italian publisher. Click on the image link above to read about the book on the publisher's website (in Italian). Here is an English
auto-translation of the book's description from their website:
"A mystery of the cross and light," that unexplained and irreproducible body image imprinted on the cloth is testimony
to the passion and death of Jesus, but also of his resurrection. The words spoken by Pope Benedict XVI returned to the
Shroud whole truth that scientific research had tried to resize. In 1988, in fact, with the C14 dating, scientists
determined that the Shroud taxes date back to the Middle Ages. Today, thanks to a multidisciplinary work promoted
by the University of Padua and lasting fifteen years, the team led by Giulio Fanti shows that the radiocarbon dating
has been distorted by environmental contamination, and goes right back to the early death of Jesus that traces of dust,
pollen and spores from the Middle East to direct, that the body has been depicted on the linen, violence told in the
Gospels of the Passion, and the image was produced by the exceptional radiation developed at the time of the
resurrection. This book, co-written by Fanti and Saverio Gaeta, is the exciting account of a discovery and the story of
the extraordinary historical events of the most precious and revered relic of Christianity.
So why all the controversy? The book apparently documents the recent Shroud testing done by Fanti and his research team at the
University of Padua and reports the results of some chemical and mechanical tests they performed which they claim "confirms that
the Shroud dates back to the 1st century." A pretty powerful statement for sure, but that is not the major problem. You can find a
more detailed report about their research on the Vatican Insider website (in English). Here is an excerpt from their article:
"The research includes three new tests, two chemical ones and one mechanical one. The first two were carried out with
an FT-IR system, one using infra-red light and the other using Raman spectroscopy. The third was a multi-parametric
mechanical test based on five different mechanical parameters linked to the voltage of the wire. The machine used to
examine the Shroud’s fibres and test traction, allowed researchers to examine tiny fibres alongside about twenty
samples of cloth dated between 3000 BC and 2000 AD.
"Final results show that the Shroud fibres examined produced the following dates, all of which are 95% certain and
centuries away from the medieval dating obtained with Carbon-14 testing in 1988: the dates given to the Shroud after
FT-IR testing, is 300 BC ±400, 200 BC ±500 after Raman testing and 400 AD ±400 after multi-parametric mechanical
testing. The average of all three dates is 33 BC ±250 years.
"The tests were carried out using tiny fibres of material extracted from the Shroud by micro-analyst Giovanni Riggi di
Numana who passed away in 2008 but had participated in the1988 research project and gave the material to Fanti
through the cultural institute Fondazione 3M."

That last paragraph goes to the core of the controversy. In a separate Vatican Insider article (in Italian - use Google or Bing to
translate the page) was the following statement from Mgr. Cesare Nosiglia, the Archbishop of Turin (via auto translation with
some additional corrections):
"Yesterday, a note from the Turin International Centre for Sindonology and the Archbishop of Turin, Mgr. Cesare
Nosiglia, put stakes in the work of Fanti. No serious' 'value'' of the results can be attributed to any of the research on
the Shroud reported in the book, said the Papal Custodian of the Shroud of Turin, Archbishop Cesare Nosiglia. ''Since
there is no degree of safety on the authenticity of the materials on which these experiments were carried out to the
Shroud cloth - reads a note of Monsignor Nosiglia - the owners and custodians cannot recognize any serious value to
the results of these alleged experiments.''"
The article goes on to include Fanti's reply to the allegations that the samples he used were invalid. In part, he states (with some
additional corrections):
"In short, there were samples taken of Shroud material in both 1978 and in 1988. In both cases, they were approved by
the Custodian of the Shroud, Archbishop (later Cardinal) Anastasio Ballestrero, with the consent of the owner,
Umberto II of Savoy in 1978, and Pope John Paul II in 1988. Involved with the Shroud for a long time, prof. Fanti
received some fibers taken from the Shroud in 1978 by prof. Ray Rogers, one of the American scientists of the
STURP team.
"But in 1988, Giovanni Riggi di Numana, the expert who cut the Shroud samples for examination by C14, and with
the agreement of Cardinal Ballestrero, kept some of the fibers of the Shroud and collected fragments of aspirated
blood and dust samples in between the linen and the Holland cloth. The conditional is a must, as no record was drawn
up of the levy for the C14, let alone a semi-official collection like that. But it is very likely that after the death of
Riggi, in 2008, a part of the material held by a dedicated foundation has come to Fanti. After the death of Ballestrero,
card. Saldarini issued a statement, asking that any Shroud materials be returned. But it seems that no one has complied
with the request.
"All of this to conclude: prof. Fanti's research was carried out on the Shroud and of course the material was authentic,
even if it was outside the control of the International Centre of Sindonology. And besides, 25 years after the C14
examination, whose own credibility Fanti's work further crumbles, perhaps one might begin to assume that a
continuation should be considered of the research program created by STURP, the Shroud of Turin Research Project,
an international group of scientists who produced a wealth of incredible scientific results after testing the Shroud in
1978.
So the biggest issue so far seems to be the validity of Fanti's samples and I guess we will all have to wait and see how this plays
out. Remember that even if the samples are absolutely authentic, if they were not formally authorized for such testing, the results
will never be recognized by the authorities. However, there is still the other issue (which I alluded to above) that must be
considered. Fanti's claims are based on the use of accepted scientific techniques, but those techniques have never before been
applied to the dating of an archaeological sample nor established as a valid dating mechanism in their own right. For this dating
technique (and Fanti's dramatic claims) to be taken seriously by the scientific community, it is essential that his research be
submitted for evaluation by a qualified, scientific peer review committee and published in a credible scientific journal. As far as I
can see from the available information, that has not yet occurred. Unfortunately, it is far more typical to submit your work to a
journal first, have it reviewed and ultimately published in the literature to establish its scientific validity, and then write a
commercial book to explain it to the layman. Many quality journals will simply not accept papers that have been previously
published in the popular media.
During the STURP years (1977-1981), the team was frequently criticized for being too secretive. However, STURP had a written
agreement with the Turin authorities not to release any data prematurely (before the completion of their final report and its
appearance in the scientific literature). STURP also understood that many of the important journals they hoped to publish their
work in would NEVER accept a paper that had first appeared in the popular media.
I am thrilled that Giulio's new tests shed a positive light on the Shroud and further dispute the radiocarbon dating results, and I am
very glad the news broke just before Easter, but I sincerely hope he gets the work into a credible journal soon. Otherwise, it can
only be considered anecdotal at best.

The Shroud is now officially in the 21st century with the announcement of the first official Shroud of Turin app for the iPhone®.
Named "Sindone 2.0" (Shroud 2.0), the app was produced by HaltaDefinizione® in Italy upon authorization of the Turin
Archdiocese and in collaboration with the Diocesan Commission for the Holy Shroud and the Holy Shroud Museum.. Here is a

ROME, March 28, 2013 (Zenit.org) - The Shroud of Turin, the linen cloth believed to be the burial shroud of Christ,
has now gone mobile. A new app available for the Apple iPad, Shroud 2.0, allows users to view the Shroud in High
Definition as well as obtain information on the different aspects of the relic.
The Shroud, one of the most well-known and debated symbols of Christianity, bears the image of a man who has
suffered scourging and crucifixion, and is believed to be the burial linen used to wrap the body of Christ. Although
there is no definitive or conclusive evidence, the Shroud is venerated as a reminder of the suffering Christ endured for
all mankind.
In his 1988 visit to the Cathedral of Turin, where the Shroud is currently kept, Blessed Pope John Paul II reflected on
the symbol God’s love portrayed in the linen, describing it as “the mirror of the Gospel.”
“The Shroud is [...]an image of God's love as well as of human sin. It invites us to rediscover the ultimate reason for
Jesus' redeeming death," the late Holy Father said. "In the incomparable suffering that it documents, the love of the
One who "so loved the world that he gave his only Son" is made almost tangible and reveals its astonishing
dimensions. In its presence believers can only exclaim in all truth: 'Lord, you could not love me more!', and
immediately realize that sin is responsible for that suffering: the sins of every human being.”
The application, which was designed and produced by the Haltadefinizione company, was created in collaboration
with the Archdiocese of Turin, the Diocesan Commision for the Holy Shroud and the Museum of the Holy Shroud.
The new app is seen as a tool of evangelization to coincide with the Year of Faith.
Shroud 2.0 allows user to explore details of the Shroud with access to high definition photographs that can zoom into
areas that are almost invisible to the naked eye. According to a communique on the application, the high definition
photos of the Shroud were taken by Haltadefinizione in 2008. The same technology was used to photograph Leonardo
Da Vinci’s masterpiece, ‘The Last Supper’. The digitization process recomposed 1649 snapshots into one single image
of the shroud into one single 12 billion pixel image.
The app, which will be available soon on the Android operating system, will give people the opportunity to view a
“Digital Exposition of the Shroud on their iPads. The application offers, for the first time in the Shroud’s history, the
most detailed image ever achieved and made available to the general public.
Shroud 2.0 will be available for download on the Apple App Store on Good Friday, March 29th.
National Shrine of the Holy Shroud to Open Soon

I am pleased to report that the National Shrine of the Holy Shroud, founded by STERA, Inc. Board of Directors member
Richard Orareo, will soon be opening in Wabash, Indiana. I will be visiting Richard and the Shrine in April and plan to include
an in depth article and new photographs in our May 2013 update. In the interim, here is a link to a new article in the Fort Wayne,
Indiana News-Sentinel titled "Collector plans area national shrine, museum on Shroud of Turin," that provides many more
details. Our warmest congratulations to Richard on this excellent achievement! Here is a brief excerpt from the article that talks
about the beautiful building Richard acquired to house the collection:
The building, which was constructed in 1936 and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, was built as a
movie studio by Mark Honeywell, a Wabash native and founder of what is now the Honeywell corporation, Orareo
said. Honeywell made movies in the 1930s as a hobby.

It later served as the clubhouse for the Wabash Country Club, whose golf course adjoins the 7-acre property, and then
the Studio Eleven restaurant, which went out of business, Orareo said.
The four-story, Tudor-style structure features Indiana limestone on some of the exterior, grand interior oak woodwork
and leaded-glass windows.

Pope Authorizes Television Exhibition of Shroud on March 30,
2013
It was announced this morning that Pope Benedict XVI, as one of his last acts as Pontiff, has authorized a television only
exhibition of the Shroud of Turin on March 30, 2013 (Holy Saturday) directly from the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist where the
cloth is permanently stored. Here is an excerpt from an e-mail I received this morning from my friend Bruno Barberis, President
of the International Center for the Study of the Shroud (Centro Internazionale di Sindonologia) in Turin with the details:
I would like to give you in advance an important piece of news. On March 30th (Holy Saturday) in the late afternoon
(Italian time) in the Turin Cathedral there will be a TV exposition of the Holy Shroud. The exposition will be
broadcast by the RAI Uno television network. This event, connected with the "Year of Faith," will happen 40 years
after the first and unique TV exposition of the Shroud on November 23rd, 1973. The Shroud will remain in its room in
the Cathedral and the length of the exposition will be around one hour. On March 1st in Turin at 11.00am a press
conference will be held regarding this special exposition.
It is likely that footage from this exposition will be picked up and shown by other television broadcast networks around the world
and on the internet. I will do my best to keep you updated as more details become available. In the interim, you can also check our
Facebook page, where I can quickly post any news that may come in while I am traveling and lecturing.
March 9, 2013 Update: For more information on the unprecedented occasion of this first "technological" exhibition of the Shroud,

Every January for the past 16 years, I have waited to the last minute to write this introduction, and today is no exception. It is 10:15
p.m. on January 20th as I start writing this with the intention of having the update go online in less than two hours, at midnight.
And every time I write this introduction to our anniversary update, it is always with the intention of saying something new and
fresh, but it seems that every year I come back to the same theme: This website would not be possible without the cooperation and
participation of all of the researchers, historians, scientists and scholars in the world who allow us to publish their work or have
written articles specifically for us and all of our loyal viewers (around 600,000 of you last year) who visit the site regularly and
read millions of our pages a year! By being there, you make our efforts truly satisfying and worthwhile. We could not do this
without you so thank you all for making this possible!
This is a particularly exciting update for us, in that we are premiering the first four issues of Shroud Spectrum International,
arguably the most important journal in the history of Sindonology. In addition, we have completed the BSTS Newsletter archives
with some important "bonus material," added four new papers and dozens of new links, updated the Valencia Congress page and
included a Special Feature on The Shroud and the Chinese Bible. And that is just a partial list! We believe there is enough new

International, the first and only peer reviewed journal dedicated solely to the study of the Shroud, recently granted STERA, Inc.

permission to bring this important journal to the internet. This is only possible thanks to the extraordinary efforts of Stephen E.
Jones, BSTS Member living in Western Australia, who graciously volunteered to do all the scanning and optical character
recognition and Ian Wilson, who provided Stephen with the original issues and valuable input. Today's update includes the first
four issues (# 1 through # 4), originally published in 1981 and 1982. We will continue to add more issues in each future update
until the complete 42 issue collection is archived in its entirety here on this website.
Since many scholars over the years have used articles from Spectrum as references in their scientific and academic papers, we have
retained all the original page numbers and page layouts so the new online versions will remain consistent with the earlier printed
references. Also, we have optimized all the photographs and illustrations that accompany the articles and minimized the
compression of the pdf files so that the illustrations are the best quality possible. We are sure you will find these truly important
journals useful in your studies of the Shroud.
BSTS Newsletter Archive Completed! (with Bonus Material)

In November 2012 we updated the British Society for the Turin Shroud page and included the ten remaining issues necessary to
complete the archive of every issue of the BSTS Newsletter published since 1982 (# 1 through # 75). Now, to round out the
collection, we have added a series of five monographs by noted scholars (including esteemed BSTS members Noel CurrerBriggs, Lennox Manton and Dr. Michael Clift and Deirdre O'Sullivan of the School of Archaeological Studies, Leicester
University), that were presented at various BSTS meetings in the 1980's and 1990's. Topics include "Byzantine Frescoes and the
Turin Shroud," "The Cappadocian Frescoes and the Turin Shroud" (both with many color illustrations), "St. Bee's Man - and What
14th Century Shrouds Actually Looked Like," "The Shroud In Greece" and "The Patient In The Shroud." Consider them BSTS
"Bonus Material." Today's update also includes the latest December 2012 issue (# 76) which, as always, contains a number of
interesting and informative articles by Michel Bergeret, Yannick Clément, Mark Guscin, Sammeli Juntunen, Andrew Willie
and Ian Wilson. And of course, we will continue to add each new issue in the future. These newsletters provide a wonderful view
of the history and evolution of Sindonology over the past thirty years and continue to play an important role in the Shroud world

Empirical evidence that the blood on the Shroud of Turin is of human origin: Is the current data sufficient? by Kelly
P. Kearse - The response to Kelly's first paper, which we published last year, was overwhelmingly positive. We are happy
to welcome him back to the website with not just one but two new blood and DNA related articles. Here is an excerpt from
the Abstract of the first paper:
"Previous studies have established that the blood areas on the Shroud of Turin consist of real blood and are not
composed of artistic pigments. It is commonly reported that the blood is of human origin, but just how
substantial is the evidence to support this conclusion? Here, the empirical evidence for the human origin of the
Turin Shroud bloodstains is evaluated.... The potential usefulness of additional testing methods, many developed
since the original studies were performed approximately thirty years ago, is also discussed."

DNA on the Shroud of Turin: Distinguishing endogenous versus exogenous DNA by Kelly P. Kearse - Here is the full
Abstract for this paper:
In the late 1990s it was reported that human DNA existed on the Shroud of Turin, and although in a generally
degraded state, certain regions were sufficiently intact to clone and sequence three genes from bloodstained
fibers: human betaglobin, amelogenin X and amelogenin Y. An unknown variable in such studies is the extent
of contamination by exogenous DNA, transferred to the Shroud by persons or objects that have come in contact
with cloth. Indeed, the abovementioned genes are not exclusive to blood cells, but are also found within other
cell types, including skin cells. Here, a simple experimental approach is described for distinguishing
endogenous versus exogenous DNA, which may help establish that DNA in the blood areas of the Shroud of
Turin originated from white blood cells (lymphocytes) present on the cloth.
Religion and Philosophy Papers

The Shroud and the "Historical Jesus": Challenging the Disciplinary Divide by Simon Joseph, Ph.D. - This is an
updated and expanded version of a paper that we originally published in August 2012. The author is an Adjunct Professor
of Religion at California Lutheran University and has added additional content and references to his original article.
Below is a brief quote from the paper that provides a good overview of the contents.
"The Shroud of Turin is virtually ignored in “Historical Jesus” research. Why? In this paper, I will seek to
provide an explanation for this curious lack of interest and examine ways in which “Historical Jesus” research
and Sindonology might complement each other. Since the 1988 radiocarbon dating test, there has been a general
assumption, particularly within the scientific community, that the Shroud is of medieval origin. The 1988 test
results have largely been regarded as “decisive proof that the Turin Shroud is a forgery.” Recent studies,
however, indicate that those results are in need of reevaluation. This paper identifies a number of distinctive
features of the Shroud that have yet to be explained and will correlate these features with Historical Jesus
research."


We are pleased to announce that the Valencia Congress page of this site has been updated to include another of the excellent
papers presented at the April 2012 event. The new paper, by CES member Andrés Brito from the Canary Islands, was one of my
favorites at the congress as it discusses in detail how the media typically deals with the Shroud (the subject of several of my own
editorials over the years). Andrés has a Ph.D. in Information Science and cites many specific examples in his excellent paper titled,
Sharing the Shroud - Comunicar la Síndone (En Español).

Abstract: We discuss the potentially misleading effect of software techniques for elaborating low-contrast
images. In particular, we present the example of the stains embedded into one of the most studied archaeological
objects in history, the Shroud of Turin. We show for the first time that image processing of both old and recent
photographs of the Shroud may lead some researchers to perceive inscriptions and patterns that do not actually
exist, confirming that there is a narrow boundary between image enhancement and manipulation.

The Turin Shroud Body Image: The Scorch Hypothesis Revisited by Thibault Heimburger - In recent months, the
rather dated Scorch Hypothesis of image formation has found some new and rather vocal supporters on the Shroud blogs.
This excellent article by noted Shroud researcher Thibault Heimburger reviews the known data, details his latest experiments
and presents his newest evidence (including many color photographs) that challenges this hypothesis in great detail. It was
originally posted on Dan Porter's blog in October 2012. Here is an excerpt from Thibault's conclusions:
The TS image is not a scorch, even a light scorch. In fact, this old hypothesis is very easy to rule out definitively
as the body image formation mechanism with some basic experiments and a microscope.

Raymond N. Rogers’ observations and conclusions concerning the body image that is visible on the Shroud of Turin
by Yannick Clément - This extensively researched paper (published on Pete Schumacher's Shroudnm.com website)

Abstract: The ancient linen cloth of the Shroud of Turin is one of the archaeological objects most studied in
history, mainly because of the unexplained nature of its image. We have recently irradiated linen fabrics by
excimer laser pulses obtaining a Shroud-like coloration, and have recognized photo-chemical processes that may
have played a role in the formation of the image embedded into the Shroud. Our results suggest some actions
aimed at a long-term conservation of the Shroud and its image.


reviewed journal Applied Optics, Vol. 51, Issue 36, pp. 8567-8578 (2012), titled Superficial and Shroud-like coloration of
linen by short laser pulses in the vacuum ultraviolet.
Abstract: We present a survey on five-years experiments of excimer laser irradiation of linen fabrics, seeking for
a coloration mechanism able to reproduce the microscopic complexity of the body image embedded onto the
Shroud of Turin. We achieved a superficial Shroud-like coloration in a narrow range of irradiation parameters.
We also obtained latent coloration that appears after artificial or natural aging of linen following laser
irradiations that at first did not generate any visible effect. Most importantly, we have recognized distinct photochemical processes that account for both coloration and latent coloration. These processes may have played a
role in the generation of the body image on the Shroud of Turin.


provided to us by noted Shroud scholar and archaeologist William Meacham in Hong Kong. Bill felt this might be the only
information about the Shroud available anywhere online in Chinese. Shortly afterwards, I received a phone call from Eric Chan, a
devoted Shroud student who also lives in Hong Kong. He told me the story of the first Chinese bible, translated and published in
1968 by Italian priest Father Gabriele Allegra, which included an Enrie Shroud photograph on the first page! Eric, who owns one
of the bibles, was kind enough to make some photographs, collect some information and put together an article titled Turin
Shroud included in Catholic Chinese Bible that provides us with some background on Fr. Allegra and his work. Interestingly, he
was beatified in September 2012. Eric is now in direct contact with Bill and they are currently planning some future Shroud
activities together in the Hong Kong area. Our sincere thanks to Eric for making this truly fascinating information available to us.

"Third Encounter of the Two Linens" Conference Rescheduled
As I reported in our last update, a conference titled, "Third Encounter of the Two Linens," sponsored by the Pontifical
University in Rome, was originally scheduled to be held at the Notre Dame of Jerusalem Center in Israel from November 25 to
December 1, 2012. However, due to the political situation at the time, the conference was postponed and is now tentatively
rescheduled to take place in June 2013. We will update you as soon as the details and dates are finalized. The conference deals
specifically with the Shroud of Turin and the Tilma Cloak of Tepeyac (aka Our Lady of Guadalupe). These are the stated
objectives of the event:
To pair off the two cloths (the Shroud of Turin and the tilma cloak of Tepeyac) that have had the greatest impact on
the Church throughout history in order to:
1. Appreciate their evangelizing, historical and scientific value.
2. Reflect upon the interplay between these two gifts of God to the world for the evangelization of the
XXI century.
3. Determine, in the light of Shroud science, what research should be done on the tilma containing the
image of Our Lady of Guadalupe.
The conclusions and proposals will be presented to the Archbishop of Mexico City, Cardinal Norberto Rivera.
With many invited speakers from around the world, the Encounter will consist of presentations by experts and round table
discussions. Among the invited speakers are Prof. Adolfo Orozco and Dr. Jose Aste Tonsmann from Mexico, Prof. Bruno
Barberis, Piero Savarino, Paolo Di Lazzaro, Fr. Hector Guerra and Fr. Gianfranco Berbenni from Italy, Dr. Alfonso

April 9 through April 15, 2013 - In December 2011, I was honored to speak in Indianapolis, Indiana at the Marian

of my lectures was Kirk McClure, who asked if I would be willing to return to the area and speak at his church, the Shiloh
United Methodist Church, also in Kokomo. Sponsored by Kirk's church and Dr. Chuck Dietzen of the Timmy
Foundation, I will be doing a series of lectures in the area. Most exciting will be the opportunity for all of us to visit
Richard Orareo's new facility in Wabash, Indiana (about 45 minutes from Kokomo) which we reported on in our August
26, 2012 update. That is the new home for his Boston Collection of Shroud Art and his non-profit organization, the
National Shrine of the Holy Shroud (NSHS), which will be open to the public by April. In fact, Richard will be bringing
some items from his extensive collection for display alongside the lifesize replica and photographs which will be displayed
at my final lecture on Sunday, April 14. Although the schedule is not yet finalized, I am including a preliminary version
here:

April 19, 2013 - I am deeply honored to have been asked to speak at the TEDx ViaDellaConciliazione conference in
Vatican City in April. The topic of this independently organized TED event is Religious Freedom Today and I will be
speaking on the Experience of Religious Freedom in Scientific Research. It will take some real discipline however, as
each speaker is only allowed 16 minutes for their presentations! Videos of the presentations will eventually be accessible
online and we will publish the links as soon as they are available.




April 22 through April 25, 2013 - I will again be teaching a course in the Masters of Science and Faith program at the
University of Rome (Ateneo Pontificio Regina Apostolorum). This year I have prepared a new course titled, "The PostSTURP Era of Shroud Research: 1981 to the Present," which picks up where my last course ended..

June 13 through June 15, 2013 - At the kind invitation of my good friend Des Armstrong, I am happy to be returning to
Southern California, speaking at a Legatus meeting on June 14, 2013 and seeing many of my old friends there. Des is
founder and president of the Rancho Palos Verdes Chapter of Legatus and typically brings together several Legatus
chapters for each of my lectures. This is the fourth time he has graciously invited me to speak and he has asked me back
again in September (see below).

July 26 through July 28, 2013 - I have been invited to speak about the Shroud at a conference in Colorado Springs being
sponsored by Prophecy in the News. I have very few details at this moment but will update you once I have more
information.

September 10 through 12, 2013 - Again, thanks to Des Armstrong, I will be back in Southern California, this time sharing
the Legatus podium with the esteemed Fr. Robert J. Spitzer, a Jesuit priest, philosopher, physicist, educator, author,
speaker, and retired President of Gonzaga University in Spokane, Washington. It will truly be a great honor to meet him!

It is rather difficult to determine exactly when the next update will go online as I am still in the last throes of finishing this update!
However, based on my travel schedule through the spring, it will probably be May or June before the next update is completed. Of
course, it will include more issues of Shroud Spectrum International, more books, papers and articles, a report on all my travels

Experiments conducted by scientists at the University of Padua in
northern Italy have dated the shroud to ancient times, a few centuries
before and after the life of Christ.
Many Catholics believe that the 14ft-long linen cloth, which bears the
imprint of the face and body of a bearded man, was used to bury Christ's
body when he was lifted down from the cross after being crucified 2,000
years ago.
The analysis is published in a new book, "Il Mistero della Sindone" or
The Mystery of the Shroud, by Giulio Fanti, a professor of mechanical
and thermal measurement at Padua University, and Saverio Gaeta, a
journalist.
The tests will revive the debate about the true origins of one of
Christianity's most prized but mysterious relics and are likely to be hotly
contested by sceptics.

The tests dated the age of the shroud to between 300 BC and 400AD.
The experiments were carried out on fibres taken from the Shroud during
a previous study, in 1988, when they were subjected to carbon-14
dating.

Those tests, conducted by laboratories in Oxford, Zurich and Arizona,
appeared to back up the theory that the shroud was a clever medieval
fake, suggesting that it dated from 1260 to 1390.
But those results were in turn disputed on the basis that they may have
been skewed by contamination by fibres from cloth that was used to
repair the relic when it was damaged by fire in the Middle Ages.
Who is Pope Francis?
Mr Fanti, a Catholic, said his results were the fruit of 15 years of
research.
He said the carbon-14 dating tests carried out in 1988 were “false”
because of laboratory contamination.
The mystery of the shroud has baffled people for centuries and has
spawned not only religious devotion but also books, documentaries and
conspiracy theories.
The linen cloth appears to show the imprint of a man with long hair and a
beard whose body bears wounds consistent with having been crucified.
Each year it lures hundreds of thousands of faithful to Turin Cathedral,
where it is kept in a specially designed, climate-controlled case.
Scientists have never been able to explain how the image of a man's
body, complete with nail wounds to his wrists and feet, pinpricks from
thorns around his forehead and a spear wound to his chest, could have
formed on the cloth. Mr Fanti said the imprint was caused by a blast of
“exceptional radiation”, although he stopped short of describing it as a
miracle.
He said his tests backed up earlier results which claimed to have found
on the shroud traces of dust and pollen which could only have come
from the Holy Land.
Mr Gaeta is also a committed Catholic - he worked for L’Osservatore
Romano, the Vatican newspaper, and now works for Famiglia Cristiana,
a Catholic weekly.
The Vatican has never said whether it believes the shroud to be
authentic or not, although Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI once said that the
enigmatic image imprinted on the cloth "reminds us always" of Christ's
suffering.
His newly-elected successor, Pope Francis, will provide an introduction
when images of the shroud appear on television on Saturday, the day
before Easter Sunday, which commemorates the resurrection.
The Pope has recorded a voice-over introduction for the broadcast on
RAI, the state television channel.
"It will be a message of intense spiritual scope, charged with positivity,
which will help (people) never to lose hope," said Cesare Nosiglia, the
Archbishop of Turin, who also has the title "pontifical custodian of the
shroud".
"The display of the shroud on a day as special as Holy Saturday means
that it represents a very important testimony to the Passion and the
resurrection of the Lord," he said.
For the first time, an app has been created to enable people to explore
the holy relic in detail on their smart phones and tablets.
The app, sanctioned by the Catholic Church and called "Shroud 2.0",
features high definition photographs of the cloth and enables users to
see details that would otherwise be invisible to the naked eye.
"For the first time in history the most detailed image of the shroud ever
achieved becomes available to the whole world, thanks to a streaming
system which allows a close-up view of the cloth. Each detail of the cloth
can be magnified and visualised in a way which would otherwise not be
possible," Haltadefinizione, the makers of the app, said.

ha usato fibre sindoniche trovate all'interno dei filtri (la
cui tracciabilità è documentata) con cui erano state
prelevate le polveri nel '78 e nell'88.
E in che modo ha concretamente analizato questi
reperti?
Con due metodiche nuove di tipo chimico basate sulla
spettroscopia e su un procedimento meccanico, che ha
paragonato tra loro una ventina di tessuti dal 3000 a.C. ai
giorni nostri, verificando poi come la media delle
datazioni delle tre indagini, condotte separatamente,

portava a datare la Sindone alla prima metà del primo
secolo d.C., verso il 30-35, cioè quando è morto Cristo.
In che modo si è formata l'immagine sul
lenzuolo?
Fanti ha ipotizzato (e in una certa misura anche
dimostrato) che l'immagine dell'uomo si è formata con il
cosiddetto “effetto corona”, cioè attraverso lo sprigionarsi
di una grande energia scaturita dal corpo di Cristo nel momento della resurrezione.
E come sarebbe stata verificata questa teoria?
Fanti lo ha fatto in due modi: sia al computer che empiricamente, tramite un manichino in scala in
laboratorio, benché sia impossibile riprodurre del tutto la Sindone su un lenzolo dato che l'energia
necessaria a far comparire l'intera immagine è immensa. Come si fa a dire che quello che si vede è Cristo e non un condannato a morte qualunque? PAG. SUCC. >

The Shroud of Turin may
be the real burial cloth
of Jesus. The carbon
dating, once seemingly
proving it was a
medieval fake, is now
widely thought of as
suspect and
meaningless. Even the
famous Atheist Richard
Dawkins admits it is controversial. Christopher
Ramsey, the director of the Oxford Radiocarbon
Laboratory, thinks more testing is needed. So
do many other scientists and archeologists.
This is because there are significant scientific
and non-religious reasons to doubt the validity
of the tests. Chemical analysis, all nicely peerreviewed in scientific journals and subsequently
confirmed by numerous chemists, shows that
samples tested are chemically unlike the whole
cloth. It was probably a mixture of older
threads and newer threads woven into the cloth
as part of a medieval repair. Recent robust
statistical studies add weight to this theory.
Philip Ball, the former physical science editor
for Nature when the carbon dating results were
published, recently wrote: “It’s fair to say that,
despite the seemingly definitive tests in 1988,
the status of the Shroud of Turin is murkier
than ever.” If we wish to be scientific we must
admit we do not know how old the cloth is. But
if the newer thread is about half of what was
tested – and some evidence suggests that – it
is possible that the cloth is from the time of
Christ.

I would hate to be at Antonio Lombatti’s house
today. His head must be exploding all over the
place.
And wouldn’t we be disappointed if we didn’t hear from
Antonio, super Shroud of Turin skeptic. He writes:
Typical Easter madness. Every year, around March
or April, there’s always a new and amazing
“discovery” to date back this medieval relic to the
time of Jesus. However, this time I don’t even have
to waste my time to reply to shroudologists: the Turin cardinal himself has declared that
these latests tests are absolutely meaningless.

You can not question the provenance, chain of custody, proper care
and suitability of the samples used by Fanti without also, again,
asking the same questions about the C14 samples.
And Stephen E. Jones wrote in a comment to another posting:

I said nothing about a “rectangle” let alone “a neat 8.1cm x 1.6cm”
one. That is Colin’s own straw man. They were just “threads” from “tufts” taken from the
cope of St. Louis d’Anjou:
“The Cluny Museum was contacted but refused to be involved. `…They got scared …’ as
Evin remarked later. So he and one Gabriel Vial went along to the Basilica of SaintMaximin at Var and pulled some tufts out of the cope known to have been worn by St.
Louis d’Anjou (d. 1297). A postal strike intervened so Vial had to hurry to Turin himself
and hand his “control sample” to Tite himself on the very day of the cutting of the
sample from the Shroud: 21 April 1988. … Confronted with the importunities of an
excited Vial, the imperturbable Tite divided his offering into three parts which he placed
not in cylinders but in envelopes for the three laboratories as an apparently unexpected
but later very useful “Sample 4″ – threads from the cope of St. Louis d’Anjou (d.
1297).” (D. J. McDonnell, “The Great Holy Shroud Dating Fraud of 1988,” 4 November
2003).
But it had to be enough linen in those threads for the three C-14 laboratories to carry
out a valid C-14 dating, otherwise they would not have been valid controls.
And each of the three C-14 laboratories subdivided their postage size sample of the
Shroud several times (one was 9 times from memory), and each subdivided sample had
to have enough linen to do a valid C-14 dating. From memory the Shroud samples were
reduced to threads anyway, so that they could be pre-treated more thoroughly. A selfstyled `Sciencebod’ if he thought about it (even if he had not bothered to READ about it)
should have realised that the C-14 labs did not do their tests on the `rectangle’ of
Shroud linen that they were each given.
So if the Shroud is authentic (as all the evidence, apart from the 1988 radiocarbon
dating, points to), then an explanation is needed for how three C-14 laboratories `just
happened’ to agree on a C-14 date range, 1260-1390, the mid-point of which, 1325,
`just happened’ to be about 25 years before the Shroud appeared at Lirey in the 1350s.
A not unreasonable explanation is that, faced with a public relations disaster, of three C14 labs all using the then new AMS method, and with literally a million pounds then
riding on Oxford’s AMS test being successful, and with the labs being unable to come up
with a consistent, publishable, C-14 date, with some of the C-14 sub-samples yielding a
C-14 date of 1st century, and other sub-samples yielding a C-14 date of 16th century
(due to an invisible repair with cotton-which Oxford lab actually discovered after Arizona
had done its test), the three labs all agreed to use a 13-14th century date range, the
midpoint of which was just before the Shroud first appeared in the European historical
record. And one way to do that was use some of the dates that the 13th century cope of
St. Louis d’Anjou had yielded.
It used to be a trump card argument in favour of the 1325 +/- 65 years C-14 date, that
if the Shroud was 1st century, then how did it `just happen’ to yield a a mid-point date
that was a mere 25 years before the Shroud appeared in the undisputed historical
record? But that argument cuts both ways: if the Shroud IS 1st century (as the

Therefore, I stand by my point (without necessarily saying or believing that that is what
happened): “…no one can absolutely prove that the Shroud samples tested by the three
C-14 laboratories in 1988 were not switched, for the sample from the 13th century cope
of St. Louis d’Anjou …”
[Colin Berry had written] “It should be easy enough therefore to shoot down this latest
unhelpful attempt to muddy the waters of science by going back to the cope to see if
there’s a missing rectangle.[“]
See above on the “rectangle” being Colin’s own straw man. I repeat that I said nothing
about a “rectangle” being taken from the cope of St. Louis d’Anjou, and nor does my
argument require it: “tufts” and “threads” from that 13th century linen cloth sufficient
for three C-14 labs to each perform a valid C-14 test, will do just fine.

Barrie Schwortz has an excellent article on th
new book by Giulio Fanti (pictured right). Picking
up part ways in (it’s the first story for Late Breaking
News for March 28):
So why all the controversy? The book
apparently documents the recent Shroud
testing done by Fanti and his research team at
the University of Padua and reports the results
of some chemical and mechanical tests they
performed which they claim "confirms that the
Shroud dates back to the 1st century." A
pretty powerful statement for sure, but that is
not the major problem. You can find a more detailed report about their research on the
Vatican Insider website (in English). Here is an excerpt from their article:
"The research includes three new tests, two chemical ones and one mechanical
one. The first two were carried out with an FT-IR system, one using infra-red
light and the other using Raman spectroscopy. The third was a multi-parametric
mechanical test based on five different mechanical parameters linked to the
voltage of the wire. The machine used to examine the Shroud’s fibres and test
traction, allowed researchers to examine tiny fibres alongside about twenty
samples of cloth dated between 3000 BC and 2000 AD.
"Final results show that the Shroud fibres examined produced the following
dates, all of which are 95% certain and centuries away from the medieval dating
obtained with Carbon-14 testing in 1988: the dates given to the Shroud after
FT-IR testing, is 300 BC ±400, 200 BC ±500 after Raman testing and 400 AD
±400 after multi-parametric mechanical testing. The average of all three dates
is 33 BC ±250 years.
"The tests were carried out using tiny fibres of material extracted from the
Shroud by micro-analyst Giovanni Riggi di Numana who passed away in 2008
but had participated in the1988 research project and gave the material to Fanti
through the cultural institute Fondazione 3M."
That last paragraph goes to the core of the controversy. In a separate Vatican Insider
article (in Italian – use Google or Bing to translate the page) was the following
statement from Mgr. Cesare Nosiglia, the Archbishop of Turin (via auto translation
with some additional corrections):
"Yesterday, a note from the Turin International Centre for Sindonology and the
Archbishop of Turin, Mgr. Cesare Nosiglia, put stakes in the work of Fanti. No
serious’ ‘value” of the results can be attributed to any of the research on the
Shroud reported in the book, said the Papal Custodian of the Shroud of Turin,
Archbishop Cesare Nosiglia. ”Since there is no degree of safety on the
authenticity of the materials on which these experiments were carried out to the

The article goes on to include Fanti’s reply to the allegations that the samples he used
were invalid. In part, he states (with some additional corrections):
"In short, there were samples taken of Shroud material in both 1978 and in
1988. In both cases, they were approved by the Custodian of the Shroud,
Archbishop (later Cardinal) Anastasio Ballestrero, with the consent of the owner,
Umberto II of Savoy in 1978, and Pope John Paul II in 1988. Involved with the
Shroud for a long time, prof. Fanti received some fibers taken from the Shroud
in 1978 by prof. Ray Rogers, one of the American scientists of the STURP team.
"But in 1988, Giovanni Riggi di Numana, the expert who cut the Shroud samples
for examination by C14, and with the agreement of Cardinal Ballestrero, kept
some of the fibers of the Shroud and collected fragments of aspirated blood and
dust samples in between the linen and the Holland cloth. The conditional is a
must, as no record was drawn up of the levy for the C14, let alone a semiofficial collection like that. But it is very likely that after the death of Riggi, in
2008, a part of the material held by a dedicated foundation has come to Fanti.
After the death of Ballestrero, card. Saldarini issued a statement, asking that
any Shroud materials be returned. But it seems that no one has complied with
the request.
"All of this to conclude: prof. Fanti’s research was carried out on the Shroud and
of course the material was authentic, even if it was outside the control of the
International Centre of Sindonology. And besides, 25 years after the C14
examination, whose own credibility Fanti’s work further crumbles, perhaps one
might begin to assume that a continuation should be considered of the research
program created by STURP, the Shroud of Turin Research Project, an
international group of scientists who produced a wealth of incredible scientific
results after testing the Shroud in 1978.
So the biggest issue so far seems to be the validity of Fanti’s samples
But will that remain the biggest issue?
