Saturday 3rd October 17.00-19.00 The poetry of Branwell Brontë This seminar presents a stimulating new work on the least known and most enigmatic of the talented Brontë family. It offers a translation of Branwell’s most romantic poems, as well the first part of Daphne du Maurier’s important re-appraisal of his figure in the biography, The infernal world of Branwell Brontë (1960), which highlights his artistic prowess rather than his failings and failures. This seminar will show how ballads in particular can be exploited on countless levels, as moments of relaxation and bonding. They can also be put to good use for ear training, as with cadence, intonation and accentuation. There will be a live performance of some well-known British ballads, to the accompaniment of the guitar. Giordano Dall’Armellina, author, musician and singer. “A” levels, International Baccalaureate, Highers, IGCSE, UKiset: An overview of school exams in the UK This seminar will explain some of the exams that teenagers do at school in the UK especially at the many prestigious boarding schools located around the country. There will be a chance to meet representatives of six top schools and hear about the benefits of attending them even for just the last two years of full-time education. Sir Winston Churchill, 1874-1965 This seminar is offered as a dual commemoration, of the 50 th anniversary of the death of Winston Churchill and the 75 th anniversary of his brainchild , the Battle of Britain, which held off the German air attacks and put pay to “Operation Sea Lion”, the much feared Nazi invasion of the British Isles. The seminar will trace the figure of Churchill as a prime player on the British and international stages through the fifty or so years of his political life.
