Syracuse, Our History
ENGLISH Syracuse, located near the south-eastern corner of Sicily on the Ionian coast, is built on an ancient Greek settlement founded by Corinthians in 734 BC. Its name comes from the Greek “Syrako” (quagmire). Syracuse originally was built on single island: Ortigia The site of the city, which Cicero described as the greatest Greek city and the most beautiful of all, retains vestiges such as the Temple of Athena (5th century BC, later transformed to serve as a cathedral), a Greek theatre, a Roman amphitheatre, a fort and more. Many remains bear witness to the troubled history of Sicily, from the Byzantines to the Bourbons, interspersed with the Arabo-Muslims, the Normans, Frederick II of the Hohenstaufen dynasty (1197-1250), the Aragons and the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies (19thcentury) Historic Syracuse offers a unique testimony to the development of Mediterranean civilization over three millennia!!! The classical performances are interpreted at the Greek Theatre. This theatre was started in the fifth century B.C. The performances deal about the classical tragedies and comedies that want to tell the positive and negative aspects of life. Our high school is san technical institute for tourism based on two main degree courses: tourism and finance and marketing. The first one concerns all forms of tourism. The main subjects are: Foreign languages: English, German and French; Art; Geography; Tourism (economy and legislation). At the end of this course we can either go to university or find a job in the world of tourism. Our school offers a lot of opportunities that can introduce us into the working world. In fact every year we have the possibility to do internships both in Syracuse and in other parts of Italy. This year, for example, the pupils of third and fourth classes have gone to a resort in Apulia. There, they have worked for two weeks as receptionists and animators. Moreover, all the pupils being on penultimate class have to work two weeks in hotel or in a travel agency to have a good preparation in this sector. The second one concerns the world of finance and marketing. The main subjects are: Economy; Law; Maths; Two foreign languages. At the end of this course we can either go to university or work in banks and in all kinds of enterprises as book keeper or accountant. ENGLISH Most part of our students are commuters, living in small towns near Syracuse. So, we get up very early (about 6 o’ clock) every morning because we have to take the bus. The starting bell rings at ten past eight o’ clock. Every school day lasts five hours except two days a week when the lessons are over an hour later. Fortunately we have two breaks of ten minutes, the first one starts at ten o’ clock and the second one starts at noon. During these breaks one can see barbaric medieval cattle running through the corridors, while our schoolyard is turned into a battle field. (We’re not joking). Sincerely our timetable isn’t very hard but unfortunately we haven’t many sports facilities. During P.E lessons we can play volleyball, football, handball and basketball. In our school we have a lot of labs for every kind of activities. There are also a beautiful library and above all a cafeteria that is the main meeting point.
