L’Acoustic Night arriva all’edizione numero dieci: da dove nasce l’idea di riunire sul Q hen Beppe Gambetta is not playing his guitar around the world, it is easy to bump into him around the alleys of the historic centre, speaking in Genoese with his lutist in vico del Ferro or with his friends of Soziglia: in his music he mixes dialect with the Celtic trilli, the Sardinian spazzolata and the Apalachian Mountains’ cross picking. The guitarist is in Genoa for the four evenings of his Acoustic Night at the Teatro Stabile. He has chosen the pages of Blue to tell about himself, in the softly spoken way that only the folk singers have when they explain the lyrics of their songs. While sitting with him in an elegant coffee shop of Genoa’s centre, you find yourselves jumping on running trains with the vagrants of the American Midwest, among a tale of Steinbeck, Pete Seeger’s ecological campaigns, and Woody Guthrie’s ballads. L’anno scorso, ad esempio, si sono ritrovati a suonare con me Mike Marshall e Pereira, entrambi amanti della musica brasiliana, e hanno dato spettacolo. edi tion: where does the idea of putting together on the same stage the best musici ans of the most i mportant guitar schools come from? My “acoustic night” is a love gesture for Genoa. As I am always travelling around the world, for once I welcome in my hometown the numerous great foreign guitarists I have met. This year I celebrate with the greatest ever seen on stage from 2001 until today, and some of them will play here together for the first time ever: these are the events from which the best things are created, the “sparks” fly on the first meeting. Last year for example, Mike Marshall and Pereira played with me; they are both Brazilian L e i è u n m u si c i s t a d a vi a g g i o : f a m o s o i n t u t t o il m o n d o , n e l le s u e c a n z o n i s i r i t ro v a n o le g ra n d i m i g ra z i o n i a m e ri c a n e e l e s u e ra d i c i p o p o l a r i , s u o n i , s t r u m e n t i e i n f l u e n z e d e i p i ù l o n t an i a n g o l i d e l p i a n e t a . Ma resta la mia città, e apre music lovers, and they indeed put on a show. However, taking off is always thrilling, just like the time I got on the plane for my first trip to the United States, to look for the great guitarists, my heroes (from this experience his first album, Dialogs, was created, Ed.). With the guitar in one hand and the tape recorder and a few clothes in the other, I used to travel by train, car, or hitchhiking. At that time there was still a plane ticket which allowed you to fly across the whole country at the same price: once, to sleep more comfortably, I took a coast-to-coast plane at night and flew back in the morning. But then you return to Genoa. This artist from Genoa is known for more than just flatpicking and his passion for American folk music. Ever since the start of his career, Beppe Gambetta’s trademark characteristic has been playing in public while wearing red shoes. His website even shows the photographs of his red shoes in different countries, immortalized all over the world where he has played his guitar. The rock star-like trademark actually comes from the people’s Genoa. “The ‘legend’ began just before I left on one of my first American tours.” Gambetta explains. “I just happened to see two pairs of red Superga running shoes in a store on Corso Sardegna, and so I left with them. I bought them because they were on sale, but in the U.S. they took on another dimension, where they spoke of great Italian fashion design. From then on, they became my trademark” Gambetta in via Garibaldi, a Genova. Le v e c c hi e l i gu r i -a m e r i c a ne , i g r a nd i chit arris ti di New Yor k , mus i ci s ti da tutto i l m o nd o , l e i h a fa t t o d e l v i a gg i o e d e l l ’ i n c o n t r o l ’ i s p i ra z io n e d e l l e s u e b a ll a t e . But it is still my hometown, and it opens horizons: it is inclined to the encounter, and it is always in a drowsy ferment. And when I do not come back, there are many Ligurians around the world who bring it to my home, far away from here. I often meet an 85-year-old lady on the East Coast, who has learnt the Genoese dialect from her father: she always uses the obsolete polite form, the Vouscià. You certai nl y br ing your homeland i nto y o ur m us i c , bl e ndi ng i t w i th the A m e r ic a n t ra d i t i o n s o f t h e o t h e r “ m a s t e rs ” o f i t s k in d . The turning point of my career took place when I started to mix the technique with the guitar, folk and flatpicking, and my Ligurian roots. Before then, I used to play like a perfect repeater of wonderful music: when I started to be creative the success arose, and I began to sell all over the world. I retrieved Pasquale Taraffo, perhaps the greatest guitarist of the last century, who used to play on the ships in the Thirties with a 14-string guitar: he was from Genoa, he would deserve a museum; one of his CDs sold 25,000 copies, but here nobody knows him. At present, I am working on the enormous musical heritage of our hinterland; the idea came to me after improvising a jam session with the bell-ringer of S.Antonio, located at the back of Genoa. Now I am “translating” with the guitar the old repertoires of the Ligurian bell-ringers: I will take the Val Bisagno to Texas! You are a star in the United States but you do not play very much in Italy. This is not strictly true. The Acoustic Night, which I will also take to Milan and Turin, is the proof of it. 4 dates in a row of great music prove that I am doing well not only on the East Coast. The beautiful, independent music is very much appreciated here too; however, there is a problem. Despite the television subculture and the role models it dictates, Italy is hungry for similar events: but the offer is lacking, and so are the theatres ready to invest. The old Ligurian-Americans, the great New York guitarists, the musicians from all over the world; you turned the journey and the encounter into the inspiration for your Due anni fa mi sono fatto coraggio e ho fatto visita a Pete Seeger, nella sua casa di Beacon che si è costruito con le sue mani, pietra dopo pietra. Whi ch is the meeting that has marked your life the most? Two years ago I braced myself up and I paid a visit to Pete Seeger at his Beacon home, which he built himself, stone by stone. At the age of 90 he is still the folk singer who has raised a generation, with the same passion he had when he sang We shall overcome, and like all the great ones, he can talk about the past looking at the future. He has just fought against the pollution of the Hudson River, by sailing it on his barge from one bank to the next, playing and making people aware of the environmental cause. he says he does not believe in the great world organizations, but only in the small steps each of us make when we become aware of our responsibilities. I also asked him about Woody Gudthrie, which was the most important thing he taught him: he replied “how to board a train when it is in motion: you throw the instrument first, then you hop on”. One of the most anticipated pieces of y o ur c o nc e r t s i s S i na n C a p ud a n Pascià. What happened with De Andrè? Fabrizio was the other great encounter of my career. It was 1995, and I met him after one of his concerts to ask for his permission to bring his Creuza de mà to the United States. He had heard me playing it, and he liked my version very much, he even thanked me. “The only thing is, he told me, if you must translate the text in English, even if you are going to the prudish Midwest, do not translate gundun! Bad language is a part of poetry”. b Il chitarrista genovese fotografato sulla spiaggia di Varazze The Genoese guitarist photographed on the beach in Varazze 23
