MILLE MIGLIA 2016
ON
THE LAST LEG, THE CARS ENTER
THE FINAL STRETCH OF THE RACE
The cars left Parma this morning, headed for Brescia.
Vesco and Guerini are still in the lead
Brescia, 22 May 2016 – The final leg of Mille Miglia 2016 started in Parma this morning,
continuing the most famous road race of all time: the cars in the race are entering the
final stretch towards the finish line at Viale Venezia in Brescia.
Italians are still leading the way, although the race is not over yet. Andrea Vesco and
Andrea Guerini have been judged to be in first place with 50,120 points, driving an Alfa
Romeo 6C 1750 GS Zagato made in 1931, and in second place we still have Luca Patron
and Elena Scaramuzzi, driving an O.M. 665 Superba Sport 2000 CC from 1926, with
49,015 points. Third place is held by Giordano Mozzi and Stefania Biacca, at the wheel
of an Alfa Romeo 6C 1500 Gran Sport from 1933, with 47,957 points. Ezio Martino
Salviato and Maria Caterina Moglia, driving a 1928 Bugatti T 40, are currently in fourth
place with 47,568 points. Fifth place goes to Ezio and Riccardo Perletti, driving a O.M.
665 Superba SS MM 2200 CC made in 1929, with 46,995 points.
From Parma, the convoy heads north through Cremona and Lodi. The Lodi part has
never been part of the speed race, but the organisers wanted to pay their respects to a
driver from Lodi, Eugenio Castellotti, sixty years after his victory at age twenty-five
when he won the twenty-third Mille Miglia driving his Ferrari 290 MM for 1,600
kilometres of constant rain.
Then, from Lodi the Freccia Rossa convoy heads for Monz, to perform a series of trials at
the Autodromo Nazionale di Monza, which was the 1922 brainchild of Brescian founder
Arturo Mercanti. On the segment through Monza, the cars will travel to Bergamo and
Franciacorta.
This year, as a tribute to Franco Mazzotti, creator and founder of Mille Miglia, the
organisers and the Municipality of Chiari designed a special programme to coincide with
the hundred-year anniversary of Villa Mazzotti. Instead of a simple drive along Via
Mazzini, the race cars will do a passage control in front of Villa Mazzotti, entering from
the west gate and exiting from the east gate towards Brescia.
During the journey to Chiari, in the Villa Mazzotti park, all contestants will be given the
book dedicated to Mille Miglia creator Franco Mazzotti. This special volume was edited
by Paolo Mazzotti, with contributions from Franco Robecchi and Claudio Baroni.
Published by Compagnia della Stampa, it was created with the collaboration of the
“Franco Mazzotti” Mille Miglia Club, ACI Brescia, 1000 Miglia Srl, the Mille Miglia
Museum, the Municipality of Chiari, the Brescia Chamber of Commerce and
Confartigianato. As of Sunday, the book will also be available in specialty bookstores
and on the publisher’s website, www.lacompagniamassetti.it.
Shortly before arrival, the contestants will steer their cars towards Gussago, where they
will enjoy a luncheon of the delicious local specialty, Brescia skewers. And beginning at
2:00, the chequered flag will once again be waved in Viale Venezia for this, the 34th
Mille Miglia road race.
“Mille Miglia has again shown itself to be a very important event, not just for Brescia but
for all of Italy - stated Aldo Bonomi, president of 1000 Miglia Srl. It will be exciting to
come back to the finish line at Viale Venezia, with the chequered flag marking the
conclusion of this thirty-fourth Mille Miglia event, which was an important
accomplishment both organisationally and financially, one that shows our management
skills. And I would like to thank everyone involved in producing this race, as our
personnel have been indispensable to the success of the event”, concluded Bonomi.
The thirty-fourth Mille Miglia, the most famous street race of all time, was held from Thursday, 19 May, to Sunday, 22
May 2016. According to the tradition begun in 1927, the race course begins and ends in Brescia and takes place in four
legs all over Italy, before and after the halfway point in Rome. With its unique combination of tradition, innovation,
creativity, elegance, and scenic beauty, Mille Miglia is a symbol of Italian excellence for the whole world.
Since 2013, the event has been handled by 1000 Miglia Srl, a wholly owned company of the Automobile Club of
Brescia, which created it in 2012. Managed by president Aldo Bonomi along with vice president Franco Gussalli
Beretta, 1000 Miglia Srl ended the previous event with a 34% increase in receipts compared to the previous year.
