Emanuele Grimaldi, joint managing director of the Grimaldi Group and president of Minoan, said: “The offer on Minoan Lines is part of our industrial strategy to build a solid Pan-European alliance of major brands operating in the transport by sea of passengers and freight. Such an alliance – continued Mr Grimaldi – is aimed at expanding our Motorways of the Sea network that already comprises Grimaldi Lines (operating Mediterranean routes) and Finnlines (operating in the North and Baltic Sea). I have been the proud President of Minoan Lines for only four months. A short period, but long enough to appreciate the excellent professional skills of the Minoan staff ashore and at sea, as well as that of the management, who will stay at the helm of the company. In our plans, Minoan Lines will remain listed on the Athens stock exchange in the same way that Finnlines, of which Grimaldi holds a 64% shareholding, has remained listed on the Helsinki bourse”. Mr Grimaldi concluded by saying that: “There is no doubt that thanks to the economies of scale, Grimaldi and Minoan Lines together can substantially increase the level of services provided to customers, by offering higher quality services at a competitive price. In order to achieve this ambitious target, we plan to push forward substantial investments to enhance the services in the Adriatic and between Piraeus and Heraklion”. Minoan is based in Heraklion (Crete), it operates a fleet of six modern Cruise Ferry vessels on the routes linking the port of Piraeus and Crete, as well as between Italy and Greece. In 2007, Minoan transported 1.57 GNE WS 3 million passengers, 283,000 cars and 153,000 trailers West Med developments Motorways of the Sea A busy fall for the West Med Ro/Ro network. While the links upgraded in late October, since early November Cagliari entered the Grimaldi Suardiaz joint-venture Genoa North Europe Baltic Sea T he Grimaldi Group and Flota Suardíaz of Spain have forged a joint venture to develop a Motorway of the sea linking Livorno and Barcelona. Under the agreement, as from 1 January 2009, the newly incorporated joint venture called Grimaldi Suardíaz is to operate the Ro/Ro-Pax vessel Florencia. This ship is currently operating the same three-times-aweek service under the Grimaldi Lines flag. Built in 2004 the Florencia is capable of transporting up to 1,000 passengers, 2,230 linear metres of Ro/Ro cargo and 160 cars. The new alliance aims to develop the trade further and, should market conditions improve, the joint venture would in fact deploy a second vessel on the route upgrading it to a daily frequency. The Livorno/Barcelona Route is part of the so-called “Long bridge” service operating on the trades between Spain and Portugal on the Western side and Greece and a large part of the Balkan region on the Eastern side. The Long Bridge offers haulage companies a single ferry ticket for the two legs by sea: from Patras or Igoumenitsa to Venice or Ancona onto Minoan Lines ferries and from Civitavecchia or Livorno to Barcelona on Grimaldi Lines or Grimaldi Suardíaz and vice versa. 4 GNE WS Livorno Toulon Porto Vecchio Barcelona North America Civitavecchia Salerno Cagliari Valencia South America Palermo Catania Tunis Malta West Africa Tripoli Misratah Sicilian Ties Grow Stronger S ince early November the Group since then, have seen a substantial has substantially strengthened growth in volumes transported. Allalouf is one of the historic names in Eastern Mediterranean shipping. Nathan Allalouf established the family’s first shipping & trading firm in Greece in 1919 and in Israel (Jaffa) in 1932. Allalouf & Co Shipping Ltd became Grimaldi’s shipping agent in 1947, even before the State of Israel was established. Since 1968, it has also represented Grimaldi in Greece where the current busi- ness name of the agent is Allalouf Hellas Ltd. A milestone in the relationship between the two companies was reached in 1967, with the opening of the line linking Trieste and Ashdod: it was the first time that a Ro/Ro vessel had called at any Israeli port. Since then, Allalouf has contributed to the development of the trades served by Grimaldi through innovative commercial approaches. Over the years, the agent has also conceived new logistics solutions to satisfy shippers and receivers. The Grimaldi Ship Agent of the Year award was presented by Mr. Costantino Baldissara, Commercial & Logistics Director and received by Mr. Ephraim Alter (General Manager of Allalouf & Co Shipping), Mr. Joseph Allalouf (Owner’s Representative of Allalouf & Co Shipping in Greece) and Mr. Anacreon Mataragas (General Manager of Allalouf Hellas). It was in fact in October 1988 that the multipurpose Ro/Ro ship Repubblica di Genova arriving from North Europe called for the first time at a Brazilian port. A lot of courage was needed to start this service because at that time the trade was controlled by the then all powerful conferences and, in the particular case of Brazil, a great part of the export products were under flag protection. But these obstacles were not a deterrent regional hubs in Antwerp and Dakar to interconnect with all for Grimaldi’s entrepreneurial vision and gradually the name the networks served by the Grimaldi Group. Due for delivery in January 2009, the Grande Ghana is the second of seven vessels of the Grande Angola class commissioned to the Croatian Shipyard. With a 47,330 gt and a 26,500 dwt, her ideal cargo mix is 2,000 cars, 2,000 lane metres of Ro/Ro cargo as well as 800 containers to be shipped on the weather deck. The latter is fitted with two cranes lifting up to 40 tons each while the vessel’s stern ramp allows the loading of special pieces of cargo having an up to 250 tonnes of weight. The Grande Ghana is intended to be deployed on the Group’s Deep Sea Line services. Istanbul Metro on the Grande Scandinavia T wo underground wagon prototypes built by Alstom of France for the Istanbul metro have been shipped from Antwerp to Izmir in October onboard the multipurpose Ro/Ro Grande Scandinavia serving the EuroMed Network. The overall dimensions of each metro wagon loaded on a trailer was 26 metres in length, 2.78 in width and 4.66 in height, and weighed 56 tons. Grimaldi is a proud specialist in the shipment of wagons for the underground networks. In recent times it shipped the trains for the Rome metro from Spain to Italy and those for the Madrid metro from Italy to Spain. It is also involved in the shipment of the trains for the Jerusalem metro. Bateau Taxi to Dakar F our new bateau taxis in Dakar, the Senegalese Capital, have recently been commissioned thanks also to the ‘taxi’ services of Grimaldi Lines’ West African Network. In fact, after being built at Peniche (50 nautical miles north of Lisbon) the boats reached by they own means the Lisbon terminal where they were lifted and stuffed on the mafis in order to be loaded onboard. Each boat was 15 metres long, 3.7 metres wide and had a weight of 16 tons. Good year for Grimaldi Team Malta 2 008 has been an excellent year for driver Joshua Anastasi of the Grimaldi Team Malta. During the twohour training exercise aboard, a Class 7 nuclear source was repeatedly planted and detected by the U.S. Coast Guard, U.S. Customs, Port Authority police, military and local fire departments with simultaneous testing of equipment and video data being transmitted to other locations. ACL closely cooperates with various governmental authorities and was chosen because of its highly maintained vessels and dedication to enhance all security levels. Ikea Iway Audit A CL has recently completed the IKEA IWAY Audit, that defines what suppliers can expect from IKEA and specifies what the company requires from its suppliers. ACL has been a transportation partner with IKEA for over two decades. ACL’S Gothenburg office worked closely with IKEA to achieve criteria in terms of the vessel, the terminal, the office and the house trucker. ACL gets U.S. coast guard qualship 21 A tlantic Container Line has received the U.S. Coast Guard Qualship 21 certification for its five G3 class vessels. This recognizes ACL’s compliance with international and U.S. standards of the U.S. Coast Guard initiative to identify high-quality ships and operations for the 21st century. Qualship 21 certification allows a maximum of two years of reductions in port state control examinations and streamlined inspection procedures. ACL is committed to the highest vessel and service standards, complying with all relevant registrations. The line was among the very first to receive ISM safety and environmental certification. The ACL vessels have received ISO 14001 Environmental Management System Certification and are also in compliance with the mandatory International Ship and Port Facility Security Code (ISPS). Helicopters whirling onto RoRo decks T he companies part of the Grimaldi Group frequently transport helicopters because of their unique ability to carry intact, safe and secure from the elements, without disassembly. In recent weeks three 6-tonne Sikorsky S61N helicopters sailed from Liverpool, in the UK, to Baltimore, Maryland (USA) onto the Ro/Ro-containership Atlantic Cartier. Upon arrival, the 18 meters long, 6 meters wide, 5 meters high helicopters, were off-loaded, prepped and flown to their new owner in the U.S. At the same time, an Augusta 109 helicopter sailed from Baltimore to Luanda on one Repubblica class ship deployed onto the Grimaldi US/West Africa Direct Service. The 11.16 meters long, 3.02 meters wide, 3.32 meters high aircraft was safely delivered to the receivers. 14 GNE WS GRIMALDI GROUP Via Marchese Campodisola, 13 • 80133 NAPOLI (Italy) • Tel +39 081 496111 - Fax +39 081 5517401 e-mail: [email protected] www.grimaldi.napoli.it Worldwide Branches Italy GRIMALDI GROUP Palermo Tel +39 091 6113564 Fax +39 091 587487 [email protected] Rome Tel +39 06 4208 3567 Fax +39 06 42814558 [email protected] ANGOLA Grimaldi Angola Navegação e Trânsitos Lda Luanda Curitiba Tel +55 41 3343 1352 Fax +55 41 3342 7153 [email protected] Rio de Janeiro Tel +55 21 2516 9005 Fax +55 21 2203 0588 [email protected] São Paulo Tel +55 11 3046 9844 Fax +55 11 3046 9862 [email protected] V itoria Tel/Fax +55 27 3235 1401 Tel +244 222 310 500 Fax+244 222 310 220 [email protected] FRANCE Belgium Tel +33 1 4465 1232 Fax +33 1 4465 1213 [email protected] GRIMALDI BELGIUM Antwerp Tel +32 3 5459430 Fax +32 3 5414275 [email protected] Benin Cotonou Grimaldi ACL France Paris Le Havre Lagos Tel +234 1 5453433 Fax +234 1 5873805 [email protected] GRIMALDI ghana Ltd Tel: +233 22 214091 Fax +233 22 214095 [email protected] Tel +1 732 452 5400 Fax + 1 732 452 5469 V irginia Beach, V irginia Tel +1 757 518 8561 (800) 225 1235 (Tollfree in the US) Fax +1 757 518 3888 Sweden GRIMALDI MARITIME SWEDEN Gothenburg Lisboa Togo Grimaldi Portugal Lda Tel +351 21 3216300 Fax +351 21 3465415 [email protected] Senegal Dakar GRIMALDI LOGISTICA ESPAÑA Madrid GRIMALDI togo s.a.
