June 2013 NUMBER 10 YEAR 6 The Trevi Group Magazine Quel senso di responsabilità… che assicura il futuro That sense of responsibility... that ensures the future di/by Davide Trevisani Q uella appena trascorsa, è stata un’edizione dell’International Trevi Group Meeting di grande valore! It had very concrete contents, a larger attendance than in the past editions and it outlined valuable strategies for the near future, hence triggering a remarkable enthusiasm. A kind of enthusiasm that, and I tell you this with a hint of pride, also shows the satisfaction of being part of and working for this Group. And it’s just for this reason that I would like to begin this editorial by thanking all those who took part and contributed to make this possible. The first big news I would like to emphasize is that from this International Trevi Group Meeting a unique Group is born which is divided into two divisions, “Construction” and “Oil & Gas”, in order to better take advantage of the synergies that might arise in their respective working areas. segue a pag. Buon lavoro! Davide Trevisani, Presidente Gruppo Trevi Aiming at better supporting this strategic choice, we established that, with start from the 1st of July, the Board of Directors’ Meetings will be called, dedicated to each division. Therefore, the Main theme of the Meeting we chose was focused on the taking of responsibilities, i.e., the “Accountability”, an attitude that is especially necessary today, at any level and job, in order to be able to meet the new, growing difficulties we have to face daily due to the Globalization of Markets. We discussed about it all together, openly confronting each other both in plenary sessions and in the workshops and, at the end, we were definitely strengthened in our working attitude. The ability to take on the responsibility of deciding and doing was the constant reminder of this International Meeting. A reminder that may be applicable in many dif- ferent situations, from the most complex to the simplest ones. And that, anyway, involves both directors and employees and workers in the same way. It’s part of the sense of responsibility of each Manager or Director to work with dedication and commitment, in order to adequately train personnel capable, in the due time, to take responsibilities; this means ensuring the future of the Organization or the Company in which one works, as well as creating development for the Trevi Group. It’s part of the sense of responsibility of everyone to leave aside whispered complaints and start, instead, a dialogue that is clear and honest with one’s own manager. This means giving a real and substantial contribution to the ability of managers to better evaluate situations and make the most correct decisions too. And it’s once again a sense of responsibility to understand where and how to intervene, in order to cut unnecessary costs and find, thanks to the new technologies, alternative solutions that foster opportunities for discussion and sharing. This is because the reduction of wasted time and money implies cutting down the redtape of customs and thus improving our “timing” on the market, with consequent benefits on the acquisition of new contracts or the management of various issues. To conclude, I would like to strongly emphasize that our group is still capable to guarantee a great balance between the three pillars that, as always, are the foundation of our development: the first refers to the ability of providing cutting-edge technology, the second refers to the growing ability of producing income, thanks to the dedication and accountability at all levels, and the third refers to the ability of minimizing the financial risks and, at the same time, producing finance. An effective message to be delivered to all our employees with justifiable pride and enthusiasm. Good work! Since the end of April, our Trevi Foundations Division has being working in Brasil, the largest country of South America, operating under the name of Trevigeos Fundações Especiais Limitada. The new company is already able to regularly operate and it is legally registered in all its areas of competence under the laws of Brasil. Trevigeos sarà in THE GROUP JOURNAL 9 June 2013 Trevi SAN PAOLO Il primo cantiere di Trevigeos in Brasile./The first work in Brazil by Trevigeos. grado di acquisire i contratti secondo due categorie principali: come committente o in qualità di subappaltatore rispetto a un appaltatore principale. T his new presence in South America has been a long lasting objective within the strategic positioning of the Group (Soilmec, Drillmec and Petreven have been present in Brazil for quite some time in some cases) in a worldwide context and the reason is well based on the huge potential th a t th i s co u n t r y presents in terms of local and regional economic development, which is well summarized in the legend of its national flag: “Ordem e Progresso”. Trevi Group is the majority shareholder of Trevigeos and our Brazilian Partners are the sole shareholders of Geosonda S.A., which is a market leader in Brazil in specialized engineering services; in particular with regard to services for slope stabilization - rods, bolts, drains, curtains - diaphragm walls; foundations - bored piles, CFA piles monitored, pile caps - ; and tillage - jet grouting type and JG CCP, sealing curtains - ; lowering of groundwater and geotechnical investigations. Geosonda SA is also one of the major clients of Soilmec do Brasil. The majority presence in the new company of the Trevi Group, a global leader in underground engineering for specialized foundations, tunnel excavation, ground stabilization, and construction and sale of specialized sector machinery and equipment, will complete the product portfolio currently offered by Geosonda S.A in the Brazilian market. At the same time, a great logistical support and synergy build up is expected to derive from the cooperation that will exist between Trevigeos and Pilotes Trevi Argentina, taking advantage of the great amount of resources present in Buenos Aires. It will also create an strategic connection that can be profited for commercial opportunities that will arise from the simultaneous presence in both neighboring countries, and both members of the MERCOSUR Integration and Economics Treaty signed back in 1991. The headquarter The headquarters of the company are in the city of Sao Paulo, the Capital city of the State of Sao Paulo, the 21 million people large city of the country, the main center of the industrial and commercial activities of Brazil. Its offices are located in Sao Paulo Bairro de Pinheiros next to important roadways and highways, to the financial center of the city, to the important Avenue Brigadeiro Faria Lima, to the Metro La dirigenza/The board C on la fine ormai prossima dei lavori di Wolf Creek, Ricardo Petrocelli -originariamente membro dello staff di Pilotes Trevi e in seguito di TREVIICOS Corporation - è stato nominato direttore generale della società. Mr Salioni was invited and has recently partecipated in the “Accounting Responsibility” meetings held in Cesena during May 16th and 17th 2013. station Pinheiros and to the terminals of short and long distance buses and railways. Trevigeos will look for opportunities that the Brazilian market offers in our sector as a growing market that will continue to grow for many years to come due to its thriving economy and the need of the country to modernize and expand its infrastructure as per the Infrastructure Plan developed by the Ministry of Transportation of the Brazilian Government. World sports events in the future years of 2014 for the Soccer World Cup and 2016 for the Olympics will also be drivers to modernize the infrastructure which has not been updated for the last 20 years. The most significant projects that are likely to be started are: piling projects in water, ocean and rivers, including or not superstructure; RCD piling on firm land and/or water; hydromill excavations; barrier walls in dams under construction with secant piles and Jet Grouting technologies. A business plan has been already modeled and implemented to meet the first opportunities of the expanding market. The mission of the new company will be “to offer the latest technologies through innovative solutions in foundation engineering with safety, quality and environment protection. Our clients will value our passion and commitment for the years to come”. This is the fusion of cultures of both Trevi Group and Geosonda SA which have many common points that allow the normal operations of the new company in the field of foundation engineering. The clients of Trevigeos will be public, semi private and private. Public clients will be at all levels of County, State and Federal organizations. The main target of the new company will be to provide specialized services for foundation of roadways, railways, ports, dams, industrial plants, commercial buildings and all those civil projects that will req uire imp o r ta n t foundation work s. Trevigeos will be able to acquire its contracts in two main categories: as main contractor or as a subcontractor to a main contractor. Although Trevigeos has already an independent and autonomous commercial department for the search and the acquisition of its Projects, another important source will be all those projects which will not be able to be performed by Geosonda within its cur rent technologies. The first project Soon after its incorporation under the Brazilian laws, Trevigeos was awarded with the first project corresponding to the piled foundations of the Railway Bridge over the Paranaiba Bridge in Sao Simao, State of Goias. The construction of the bridge includes 80 GD piles both on firm land and water with rock embedment. The bridge is part of the important R ailway Project “Norte-Sur” under the responsibility of VALEC, the national agency in charge of the construction and maintenance of the railway system in the country. The construction is scheduled to start in June 2013 and our client Constran is building the 520 km section with full activities on all fronts of the project. 10 June 2013 THE GROUP JOURNAL Trevi Argentina/Pilotes Trevi porta la geotermia sulle Ande Argentina/Pilotes Trevi takes geothermal energy to the Andes Il sito dei lavori di perforazione prima e dopo un’abbondante nevicata. /The site of the drilling works before and after a heavy snowfall. P ilotes Trevi is workin g on the geothermal project “Los Despoblados”, in the Valle del Cura, in the province of San Juan (Argentina), at an altitude of 4,0004,200 m. This contract is very important for two reasons: firstly, because it represents the entry of Pilotes Trevi on the geothermal market in Argentina, and then, because of the importance of the customer (Barrick, is the market leader for drilling works in the mining industry) and the resulting future development of Trevi Pilotes in the field of geothermal energy. The contract covers the drilling works for 5-8 wells, at a depth of 250 m. Works required a month and a half just for the preparation, while 3 months are envisaged for the implementation. This result is mainly due to the excellent technical work carried out by Hugo Rivas and to the collaboration of various Divisions of the company, which contributed to exceeding the customer’s expectations and which allows the company to establish itself in the mining sector, a market in which Pilotes Trevi decided to enter and where it wants to stay for as long as possible. Ortensio Rocca, Trevi S.p.A. THE GROUP JOURNAL 17 June 2013 Trevi RIG ON DOCK A. T.I. Trevi (Trevi C.C.C.) is carrying out the second execution stage of the general project for the construction of a new Container Terminal and Sediment Tank in the Port of Naples, in the pre-existing eastern dock. The contractor is the Port Authority of Naples. Construction activities relating to the implementation of the works began in July 2012, while preliminary activities, such as the clearance of explosive r e m n a n t s o f w a r, additional geotechnical investigations and ante- operam environmental monitoring , were started from the month of September 2011. At present, the eastern dock, has the following morphological characteristics: variable depth from 7 to 15 m from the average sea level; water surface of approximately 7 ha; back square between the two piers of the dock with a width of 70-77 m, with opposite quay of 250 m; length of the development to the west quay of 250 m, with a width of 70 m (Progress wharf); length of the development of the quay in the east of 285 m, with a width of 100 m (southern quay). The Terminal will be built by confining and filling the water surface of the dock and the area in the east of the eastern dock (extension of the Terminal which is about 200 m long) with the sediments dredged from the bottom of the port of Naples. For this purpose, the eastern dock must be completely waterproofed to form a sort of “box” with characteristics of permeability equal to K <10-9 m/s on all sides of the perimeter and on the base (no activities are envisaged on the latter by this contract). The filling of the reclaimed land (“cofferdam”) is not covered by this contract and it is still in the planning stage. Activities and works to be executed within the scope of the contract are: • execution of the combined double-wall made of steel (sheet pile), to be filled with inert material, with sealed joints, driven until reaching the tuff formation that extends for about 20-25 m from the average sea level. The sheet piling is the main part of the supporting structure of the quay; it is 630 m long, with a depth of about 18 m, allowing the berthing of two container vessels with size corresponding to the vast majority of the today containers. This part of the work delimits the seaward tank according to the waterproofing criteria required for the project; • construction of plastic diaphragm walls suitable to confine the tank filled according to the waterproofing cr iter ia se t by the project (k <10-9 m/s); • construction of bored piles within the main elements of the above mentioned combined double-wall, serving as foundation for the upper superstructures on the dock surface (dock cranes, etc.); • consolidation of the seabed with jet-grouting technology in the areas of the tanks for the intake and discharge of the cooling circuit of the Tirreno Power Plant; • consolidation of the Prog ress pier head with micropiles and jet grouting; • environmental dredging of the contaminated sediments at the bottom of the dock; • amongtheworkscovered by the project, there is also the construction of a new cooling water system for the circuit of the TirrenoPower Plant, Realizzazione della doppia parete combinata in acciaio (palancolata)./Execution of the combined double-wall made of steel (sheet pile). adjacent, towards the soil, with the eastern dock, whose structures such as pipes and tank intake and discharge systems, will be combined - to a large part - with the structures of the terminal dock. Figura 1. Architettura piattaforma “Compensation Grouting Manager”. Picture 1. Architecture of the platform “Compensation Grouting Manager”. Alessandro Bertero, Trevi Group R&D Project Service THE GROUP JOURNAL 21 June 2013 Technology corner / L’angolo della tecnologia Gruppo Trevi “Compensation Grouting Manager” An innovative approach, developed thanks to the cooperation between the Trevi Group and SWS Engineering, for the turnkey construction of “compensation grouting” interventions, from the design to the control, management and execution of the same intervention. T he “compensation grouting” technique is applied to preserve structures that are “sensitive” to the effects of subsidence, caused by natural reasons or digging operations. Examples are the execution of undergrounds or tunnels close to buildings. The “compensation grouting” technique generally involves the identification of a monitoring plan, the design and implemen tation o f subsidence mitigation inter ventions by injecting quantities of cement mixture at a given pressure and at a specific point. The three main phases are: • pre-treatment - preclogging; • preventive treatment; • integrative treatment - compensation. In the pre-treatment, the repeated injection of mixtures creates a lens of consolidated soil, thus obtaining a general improvement of the mechanical properties of the foundation soil and a controlled lifting of the laying surface of the building. After having performed a s t r u c t u ra l ch e ck of the soil, it can be th e n t re a te d preemptively, in order to create a sort of “pulling over” of the laying of the building that is equal and opposite to the expected loss of volume as a result of excavation operations. A d d i t i o n a l treatments of compensation are ultimately required if, during excavation, subsidence is recorded that is beyond the pre-set threshold limits, allowing the restoration of the ideal configuration of the laying of the building. Therefore, an effective intervention requires: • knowledge of the location and excavation parameters of TBM to proceed, pre-emptively, with the “pre-grouting” operations; • availability of realtime values o f failure and distortion measured on buildings; • fast and automatic calculation algorithms for the determination of volumes, pressures, and offsetting positions. • quick and f lexible injection systems able to ensure the injection volumes in the required timing and mode of injection. These activities, when per formed in the traditional way, often do not consider the required tight integration between planning, monitoring and processing of the acquired data into useful i n fo r m a t i o n m a d e available to those involved in the execution phase, with the risk of causing operational inefficiencies that can increase time and costs of the intervention. The site of the AV line, hub of Florence, was the occasion for the start of a mutual and exclusive collaboration agreement between the Trevi Group and the company SWS engineering, in order to act as a single entity capable of providing a complete product. The innovative platform “compensation grouting manager” is based on the use of a series of monitoring devices and a dedicated software that allow to follow all the operation stages, from planning to the control, management and execution of the injections. The main peculiarities o f th e s y s te m a re (picture 1): • modelling and design of the intervention; • real-time acquisition of monitoring data; • real-time evaluation of the behaviour of the structure (control o f s u b s i d e n ce a n d distortion); • definition of the position of the valves to be injected and the volume of injection (Injection strategy), updating – for each injection – the efficiency of the injection and the same injection sequence ; • d i re c t i n te r fa ce between the control system and the central injection, so as to directly set the injection strategy and recover, at the end of each injection phase, injection volumes and actual pressures; • optimization of pumping sequence to avoid dela y s in compensation operations and therefore potential slowdowns during the excavation; • storage and archive of injection parameters. The tunnel passes under more than 150 buildings, many of which can be considered as historic buildings, with a coverage ranging from 6 m to 20 m. Active and passive protection measures have been designed for existing buildings, bridges and railway structures. In particular, the “compensation grouting” system was envisaged in the area of the ancient Fortezza Da Basso and in the area of Ponte al Pino for the buildings 165 and 166 (Picture 3), which are considered to be particularly sensitive for two reasons: low coverage of the excavation (6-8 m) and the difficulty of controlling the lost volume of excavation of the TBM at such a short distance from the launch shaft (about 80 m). Drilling works for the installation of valved pipes were and will be performed with the technique of directional drilling, partly from wells and partly from the surface (area Fortezza da Basso), with lengths varying between 50 and 100 m. A field test has just been carried out in the area of Ponte al Pino and the drilling and installation phases of the valved pipes and the pre-clogging injection for the buildings 165 and 166 have been completed (Picture 4). Before taking leave of the company to begin retirement, he recollected his decades-long adventure. Davide Bertaccini, oltre quarant’anni di lavoro in Soilmec./More than forty years of work in Soilmec. “I came on board the company on January 2nd 1967 as a lathe turner in what at the time was Pali Trevisani. My brother had been wor- king there for a few years. In total there were about 15 of us working at the small plant located in the Torre del Moro quarter of Cesena. The MT was the machine being constructed then; it was produced almost exclusively to meet the company’s needs, although orders from the outside started to come in. In 1969, the new factory was completed, built from scratch in an area I remember that only contained wheat fields. When hydraulics were introduced, we started producing the RT, the first rotary. From that moment on, it was a an onward rush of development that allowed Soilmec, thanks also to electronics, to achieve levels of innovation in the machinery considered unimaginable then. Over time, I went on to work in quality control and then logistics, which took on more and more importance starting in the 1970s as a result of the company’s internationalization. I’ve always enjoyed my job and have been passionate about performing my work, not only because it’s my basic nature, but also because the company through its ownership, particularly il Cavaliere (founder Davide Trevisani) instilled a sense of belonging that remains a distinctive characteristic today despite the size of the Group. For me, it was always very exciting to be forging ahead, and that meant in every single aspect. I worked 40 years in the factory without ever witnessing a serious accident even though huge pieces of structural steel were being handled, not to mention heavy machining and metalworking. For anyone who is familiar with industrial production, that in itself is enough to understand the success of the brand and the product. When all is said and done, I consider myself lucky because I spent a long period of my life working for a company that gave me a great deal, but that also allowed me to give a lot of myself on both a professional and personal level. Looking back, I’d do the same thing all over again.” Drillmec Inc. has been awarded a contract to supply two 3,000 HP offshore modules rigs to Perforadora Mexico. This is an extremely important step for Drillmec’s future to become a player in the offshore market, since the drilling rig package has been designed and is being manufactured entirely by Drillmec in their facilities in Houston. T he offshore market is developing at an incredibly fast pace, and Drillmec has entered it with strong credentials - know-how, manufacturing capacity, technical innovation - in this extremely attractive area. On top of this, Drillmec is also developing a new semi-submersible top side drilling rig package for the Russian market, marking another milestone for its expansion to this arena. The 2013 of the OTC (Offshore Technology Conference) in May was the perfect opportunity for Drillmec to show the newly designed package to potential customers and explain the innovative aspects and main advantages of the product. These new platform rigs intend to respond to a different need of the current North and South American offshore market. More in general, the offshore industry around the world is looking for various ways to improve the installation of the offshore drilling packages. Given the recent increased emphasis on permits, certifications and safety, often extremely time consuming, especially in the Gulf of Mexico, after the Macondo incident, it is more crucial than ever that the offshore platform gets installed in the quickest and safest way possible. On top of the elements just described, offshore rigs have to rely on traditional derrick barge cranes that are often not readily available to lift these drilling units onto the platforms. With this in mind, Drillmec developed its Offshore Modules Platform Drilling Rigs, which do not need to be equipped with these derrick barge cranes, in order to win this challenge. These rigs are designed and built in modules so that the modules can be installed by the drilling rigs’ operational cranes, with the help of one set of temporary cranes. Since they will be drilling in the Gulf of Mexico in an extremely active and densely crowded area in Ayatsil, just next to Ciudad del Carmen, fast and safe installation is crucial. W eatherford D r i l l i n g International (WDI), the drilling division of Weather ford Inter national, one of the largest oilfield ser vices companies operating in more than 100 countries with more than 50,000 people worldwide, has won a contract with Kuwait Oil Company (KOC) to drill deep oil wells in the state of Kuwait. WDI has chosen Drillmec as its supplier for the 3000 HP land rig package with very elaborated equipment and components. The project has to be executed in less than eleven months including engineering, procurement, manufacturing and testing. Drillmec S.p.A, a s a n e x p e r i e n ce d manufacturer and rig builder in the oilfield, is taking in charge all the project aspects including engineering, development and project coordination. The package will be built in compliance with the Oil company’s needs and performance constraints while respecting all the HSE aspects. T he 3000 HP that Drillmec is building is a recently designed land rig that comb ines the conventional drilling methods’ simplicity with the most recent technologies to guarantee safety and h i g h p e r fo r m a n ce. This marriage could be achieved only by a continuous R&D. Automation and remote control are one of the fundamentals that Drillmec applies to the conventional rigs in order to limit the accidents’ risk, keep the drilling personnel safe during operations and guarantee high p e r fo r m a n c e . T h e driller ’s cabin, for instance is a safe and comfortable environment for the driller who can control and monitor all rig’s maneuvers without getting exposed to rotating or dropped objects. The power catwalk guarantees fast and safe pipe handling while limiting accidents risk. Many other equipment like power slips, top drive, power tong , gas detection sensors and video monitoring system are all used and managed together through sophisticated software and sensor technology to keep the driller and rig manager in a constant control of the rig’s operations. Nevertheless design and technolog y application are not the only winning cards that can make a difference. Nowadays it is essential to have a proper project management that can secure the contract’s exe c u t ion on t ime and a budget with the lowest impact on HSE. The current project is nothing than another concrete example of success ful projects tha t D r i l l m e c ha s executed in the last decade. This result comes from the right project management and the quality control tha t D r i l l m e c ha s implemented and keeps improving up to this day. After contract for total four units that was signed in 2012, the first two Drillmec HH-75 Slant rigs have been delivered by Drillmec Italy to Australia in April 2013, and another two has delivered in May. The slant capability is mainly needed to reach shallow reservoir. All loads are wheels mounted or jack up mounted to aim fast moving. The new design will allow to lift or move the rig with the minimal lifting equipment. No big cranes are necessary. As well, pilot or escort are not required, only road permits are applicable on a yearly basis. The main purpose was to enhance the automation of the drilling set and to reduce the number of people working on the rig. Pipes, range 2, are stored horizontally on two semitrailers. Trip in and trip out sequences move them to the well centre using preset PLC based control technology. Pipe handler with two grabbing arms, is installed on the mast side whereas the pipe lifter is integrated in the first pipe trailer. The maximum loading capacity is 2500 kgs. The Pipe loader will measure also the length and the weight of drill the pipe and send information to PLC. Pipe connection d o p i n g i s a n o th e r automatic task. A total number of 192 drill pipes are stored on two semitrailers. A third semitrailer can be supplied on request and can replace an empty one. Drill collar and casing are laid on a flat rack. Hydraulic transfer is suitable to move single joint of casing and collar to the pipe loader working area. The cabin is equipped with a cyber-chair and redundant PLC. All the controls are electronic over hydraulic as the second purpose was extremely precise data collection and remote control. For e x a m p l e We C a t t McCoy instrumented saver sub can measure wireless the torque and rpm. Substructure clearance is 3,500 mm allowing a BOP stack which is automatically positioned by an hydraulic hand ling system. It moves in all direction and rotates in order to be adjusted and correctly positioned. Drillmec standard top drive was modified and upgraded to meet the drilling program of the Client. A max speed of 200 rpm is granted during specific phases. In addition to standard positioning system, a laser sensor is being used when very accurate measures are needed Slips for drill pipe, collar and casing do not require any human intervention. The Trevi Group company increasingly present on Ethiopian territory. D rillmec “ Water Division” has established since fifteen years a fruitful business activity in Ethiopia, meeting the needs of a developing country and acquiring over the years a knowledge of the territory and a network of collaborators able to give a competitive advantage. During the recent years Drillmec with its selection of water-wells drilling rigs “G-series”, has satisfied the increasing local demand of rigs and has gained the trust of the large part of federal and regional authorities that oversee the exploitation of groundwater resources. Moreover some of these authorities subsidize the purchase of drilling rigs and drilling equipment, which then, they manage directly or through controlled companies. The increase of contracts with Ethiopia and then the requests for on-site technical assistance, spare parts and other after sale services led, in 2011, to the establishment of an operating office on the Ethiopian land, Drillmec Ethiopia Branch. The Ethiopian branch manages after-sales services and technical assistance to Customers and provides also a valuable contribution to sales activities, through a direct contact with drilling companies, government agencies and local investors. Drillmec Ethiopia team is composed of a local manager and expatriate specialized technicians, who have the primary responsibility to carry out commissioning, training “on the job” and technical assistance on drilling sites. Giuseppe Falbo, Sales Area Manager I t is commonly known, especiallyinrecentyears that the offshore business has a strong growth potential. The consolidated success is confirmed by the last edition of the OMC (Offshore Meditarrean Conference, March 20th –22th) which was the most important national event within the Offshore Oil&Gas Industry. The OMC has attracted in 2013 over 13,700 participants coming from 32 different countries (showing an increase of 31% compared to 2011). This eleventh edition of the Exhibition in Ravenna is one of the most important meeting places for all the operators in the sector. Moreover, 8 delegations from many countries have participated in the OMC: Algeria, Egypt, Ghana, Iraq, Libya, Mozambique, Norway and Pakistan. The performing area, consisted of 20.500 square meters, was divided among conference rooms, exhibitions and workshops outdoor area. The exhibition has been successful because of the strong presence of nationalandinternational exhibitors. A total number of 570 companies from more than 30 countries displayed their products and introduced the latest innovations in the industry. Drillmec had a stand divided into two areas: one indoor and one outdoor in which it was exposed the HH75, one of the hydraulic machines flagship. Many visitors from all over the world visited the Drillmec’s stand. As per the previous edition Drillmec has organized guided tours of the Rig to describe and underline all its characteristics. Despite of the bad weather visitors were numerous and worthwhile. The HH-75 which is the smallest model in the series HH, has received remarkable interest from visitors because of its skid mounted characteristic and its faster moving around the yard compared to the competitors. Moreover, this type of machine, if properly set up can also operate on offshore platforms as Drillmec has already done in Congo with Perenco workover project. The theme that has entirely driven this eleventh edition has been well summed up by the motto “Charting a course in changing sea”. This motto also testifies the commitment of the companies operating in the field of hydrocarbons extraction to research new technologies with less environmental impact. Drillmec HH-75 suits perfectly this context as its high technology is finalized to reduce visual and environmental impact. On the 21st of February, a hundred years ago, Mario Vicini, the unforgettable cycling champion of the ‘30s and ‘40s, was born in Martorano, Cesena. In the article the nephew remembers the famous grandfather. Giorgio Stambazzi, Amministrazione Soilmec Gagg ad Gaibèra” (so named after the red color of his hair and the nickname of his family) gets on his bike for the first time when he is 17 and begins to carry fruit boxes to help his father who was a merchant. These were the first training sessions of Mario Vicini that, once, rode as far as Pescara, where a market was held, to join his father. He began his career as an amateur, but he soon had his first victories that, gradually, became more and more numerous, and led him – in the following years – to try it at professional level. He made his debut in the Giro D’Italia (Tour of Italy) in 1936 and ranked at the 17th place in the final standings and, above all, as the 2nd among the isolates (without a support team). 1937 starts badly: luck turns its back on both the Milan-Sanremo (gearbox failure when he was among the first) and the Giro (he fell and broke his collarbone when he was in the top ten). Despite all this, he recovers and – by selling two gold medals he had won as an amateur – he manages to finance his participation in the Tour de France. By making a brave choice indeed, he decides to run again as isolated (he organized his hotels and equipment alone and could not count on anyone in the race), in order not to have to be at the service of Bartali, who would have been his captain in the Italian team, even THE GROUP JOURNAL 49 June 2013 Sport if he could have joined them. After a not encouraging 45 th place in the first stage (he had to mend his first hole on the insidious French pave), he quickly began to climb positions and, at just 24 years, he drew the attention of the general public for his brave and generous temperament. Journalists started to nickname him “the red devil” for his skills as a climber that emerged in harsh stages, including the Izoard and the Aubisque, among the growing enthusiasm of all Italian sport lovers, especially after the withdrawal of Bartali. When riding uphill, Vicini was always among the first and, despite a questionable penalty that favored the French rider Lapebie (the final winner, who, among other things, was repeatedly towed by cars driven by the jury and by the thrusts from the audience) he got to temporarily wear the yellow shirt. As it is beautifully recalled, in great details, by Dino Pieri in his “Men in bicycle”, this result was truly amazing considering the absence of a team, the lack of knowledge of the route and the language, the need to organize everything alone and the eleven holes in his tires which he sorted out alone, hence causing inevitable delays. In the following stages, Vicini always remained in the first positions, finishing the tour in the second place in the overall standings and, of course, as the first among isolates. At his return to Cesena, after a month away, he was triumphant and his exploit at the Tour earned him a contract with Lygie. In 1938 he won in style the Giro di Toscana, with an advantage of 11 minutes on Guerra and up to 18 minutes on Bartali, who will always be his great friend and admirer. At the Giro, that year, he immediately won the second stage, even winning the pink shirt, but once again, he was unlucky and he had to pull out due to a fall while riding downhill. At the Tour, instead, he ranked 6th, distinguishing himself for the help given to Bartali, his captain. In 1939, he placed 3rd at the Giro and, especially, he was an Italian Champion: he was the first Romagna cyclist to become national champion among professionals. In 1940, among other achievements, he won two successive stages in the Giro, finishing in the 4th place. At 27 he was in his full competitive maturity, but the outbreak of World War II ended his career; he continued to run after the war as wingman of Fausto Coppi (with whom he developed a very tight friendship, just like with Bartali), and continued to seize leading placements despite his mature age. When he retired from racing, he began his career as an entrepreneur, first with a small shop and then with the factory “Vicini”, whose bikes still remind us of his name thanks to the work of his sons and grandchildren. However, he didn’t abandon his beloved bike, and he kept on pedaling because he loved it, and he even won the World Champion prize for veterans in Austria in 1973. A fter a lifetime of commitment, sacrifices and successes, he died in Cesena, on the 6th of December 1995. Giorgio Stambazzi, Soilmec Administration Triathlon che passione/Triathlon, what a passion! Gabriele Mariani, RCT M y novel is titled “You’re a zero”, and it was released a few days ago by Erudita, a small publishing house in Rome. It’s my literary debut, although it is not the first novel I wrote (I have written another one, but it is still unpublished). So far, I published several short stories in collections of young authors and I took part, with some success, in some national literary contests. “You’re a zero” is a fiction novel, set behind the scenes of the music world. As a matter of fact, its three main characters are: a record producer undergoing a crisis of credibility, a mediocre singer, who is a drug addict and desperate, and a brilliant musician, but with a disability that prevents him from showing the glossy image that the public expects from a rock star. The three people are trapped in a spiral where music, drugs and blackmailing are intertwined. All this happens in Milan that is depicted as being constantly dark and rainy.
