Il dott. Stefano Carbone è nato a Roma il 28.05.1982. Si è diplomato in maturità scientifica nel 2001; ha
studiato Medicina e Chirurgia presso l’Università degli Studi di Roma Sapienza dal 2001. Si è laureato
presso la stessa Università il 23.07.2007 con media voti agli esami di 29/30 e voto 110/110 e lode. Tesi in
Ortopedia e traumatologia “Discinesia scapolo-toracica e SICK Syndrome in pazienti con lussazione

Centrale)
Dal 17 Gennaio 2011 al 12 Febbraio 2011 fellowship presso Università di Salisburgo con il prof. Herbert
Resch per l’apprendimento della tecnica mini-invasiva per le fratture dell’epifisi prossimale di omero
(FRATTURE OSTEOPOROTICHE) con il sistema Humerusblock. Fino al 06/2013, ha eseguito 52 fratture
di omero prossimale trattate con Humesublock come chirurgo operatore presso l’Università di Roma
Sapienza, Clinica Ortopedica e Traumatologica.
Dal 8 Gennaio 2012 al 4 Febbraio 2012 fellowship presso il Lindenhofspital, Bern (CH) con il prof. Ralph
Hertel per apprendere I fattori causanti l’osteonecrosi della testa omerale.
Particolare interesse e competenze per le fratture su base osteoporotica dell’arto superiore trattate con
sistemi mini-invasivi (MIROS, Humerusblock). Pubblicazione sulle fratture osteoporotiche dell’omero

Purpose Pigmented villonodular synovitis (PVNS) is arare condition. Our purpose is to describe the largest
series of patients with shoulder PVNS, massive irreparable rotator cuff tear, and glenohumeral osteoarthritis
treated with arthroscopic debridement and synovectomy. Methods We treated 9 patients with PVNS of the
shoulder, irreparable rotator cuff tear, and slight glenohumeral arthropathy (group I). Patients underwent
arthroscopic synovectomy and debridement. Results [constant score (CS) and subjective shoulder value (SSV)]
were compared to those obtained from a control group (group II) of 20 consecutive patients undergoing
arthroscopic debridement for irreparable cuff tear associated with hemorrhagic synovitis with no or slight
glenohumeral arthropathy. Histologic examination was obtained in all cases to obtain the correct diagnosis.
Results The preoperative shoulder function in group I was reduced with respect to group II. Upon follow-up,
CS and SSV were lower in group I. Preoperatively, the differences relating to the CS value and to each item of
the score were always statistically significant; instead, at follow- up, significant differences emerged in the CS,
ADL, and ROM. At follow-up, significant differences emerged between CS of group I and of group II without
glenohumeral arthropathy. Differences using the SSV were always statistically significant. Conclusions The
poor functional outcome of patients affected by PVNS can be attributed to the coexistence of the irreparable
cuff tear and to the glenohumeral arthropathy. All patients with PVNS had shoulder osteoarthritis; it cannot be
simply attributed to natural history of massive irreparable cuff tears, but to the pigmented villonodular
synovitis.

Palermo, Italy, 16-18 June 2011. An inusual case of bilateral rotator cuff tear. S. Gumina, S. Carbone. A 64year old man presented at our Shoulder Clinical office with a painful left and right shoulder, present for more
than one year. There was a spontaneous onset history without history of acute trauma. Clinical examination
showed for the right shoulder active forward elevation of 110°, abduction of 120°, external rotation of 30° and
internal rotation of 40°, while for the left shoulder the ROM was 90°, 70°, 10° and 20°, respectively. Clinical
test for the rotator cuff were bilaterally positive, with the Lag Sign on the left side markedly positive. MR of
both shoulder confirmed the diagnosis of large rotator cuff tear (supraspinatus and infraspinatus) with slight
retraction of the tendons and Goutallier grade II fatty degeneration on the right side, while on the left side it
showed a massive irreparable rotator cuff tear with retraction of the tendons and fatty degeneration.
