A seguire il tributo di autorità locali O “ MET Srl was officially established by Angelo Bartesaghi in Lecco, on the Lake of Como in Lombardy, northern Italy, on February 1st, 1963, a very cold Friday morning, to be exact. This year, having reached the respectable age of 50 years, the company decided to celebrate the occasion with a series of events dedicated to its customers, the press, sub-contractors, sales agents/representatives and, of course, the employees whose skills are the main capital of the company,” these are the words of Esko Uutela, who took part in OMET celebrations last May, on its bulletin. The May celebration organized by OMET started on Friday May 10th in the afternoon, with the press launch of a monograph book on OMET’s history, “OMET 50 Years of Passion and Excellence,” in an event at Villa Cipressi, Varenna, on Como Lake. In the splendid setting of the villa and gardens built between the XV and XIX century, Antonio Bartesaghi, Managing Director of OMET and Marco Calcagni, Sales Director, explored the path of fifty years of passion and challenges and laid the foundations of a bright future. Thanks to the enchanting atmosphere of the lake and the beautiful sun which begun to shine on Friday afternoon, the 3-day event marked the strengthening of existing collaboration, reinforced old friendships, excited and entertained. Not forgetting of course that what matters is the ability of OMET to be a high-technology partner for the customers with a deep understanding of the market rules and whose mantra is pure innovation, simple in its sophistication. The celebrations will continue in 2013 during IT’s Tissue event in June and Labelexpo Europe scheduled from 24th to 27th September 2013. 148 pages with difficulty enclose the story of one of the most reputed mid-size companies in northern Italy, capable of a slow and progressive growth that has made of it one of the major player in the global stage in the printing and tissue converting markets. Founded in 1963 by Angelo Bartesaghi, OMET continues to trace its innovation path and create award-winning solutions that do succeed in both sectors to keep the pace of relentless change. “That OMET was born at all is entirely due to one man being prepared to risk his own house to help start the business. As the company grew, it physically detached itself from home, but it retained the deep sense of belonging to a family. The pioneers were friends, and today’s 200 employees are joined together by a deeply felt belief that is built on daily interaction at work, and nourished by the values that the founder instilled in company life: enthusiasm for what you are doing, active participation, a continuous will to improve, stubbornness, a view onto the future, the conquest of new frontiers, respect for other people, and an ethical standard of behaviour.” So reads the V Chapter of the book on OMET, written by Chiara Mauri, Professor at SDA Bocconi University of Milan, consultant and friend of the Bartesaghi’s family. These few words perfectly describe the story of the company from its modest beginning to the successes of today: the small group of friends and co-workers that in the first half of the 1960s were getting busy at night, after work, to create OMET’s first machines at Angelo Bartesaghi’s house, have become a structured company with over 200 employees (‘co-operators’, as Angelo Bartesaghi’s used to say), linked with its subsidiaries in the world through SAP Intelligence and measuring every aspect of the company’s life on ‘Lean’ principles. OMET machines have quite improved in time but always a little bit ahead from what the market possibilities allowed to do. Innovation was the motor of OMET then, as it is now; the family, the management, the employees never accepted to entrap their fantasy and offer customers a copy of someone else’s machine. Innovation with Passion is the company’s motto. If Innovation is the basis of OMET technological approach, Passion is the reason behind the company’s hunger for growth, with social responsibility to guide its steps. The type of responsibility that has urged the owners to establish scholarships for deserving children of employees or work hard to reinforce the link between local schools and companies (OMET is located in a very active industrial district in northern Italy). The monograph is not a catalog, nor a commemorative cadeau, but a travel inside the transformation of an idea into an established reality made of people, quality and care in the perpetual search for excellence. The machine, based on vacuum-fold technology, is juxtaposed to traditional mechanical folding machines. The line, called FV, while exploiting a known technology, offers superior performance with regard to the electronic on-board equipment and management of the production process. Il gruppo finale che avvia i tovaglioli alla macchina confezionatrice è configurato, from touching any hazardous part, is fully controllable from the operator panel on which it is possible to set the size of the towel to produce, the production speed and the type of fold: 1/4, 1/8 or dispenser napkins fold 1/8. Maintenance is simple and involves a very limited direct intervention of the operator. The FV Line is a modular machine with different groups in combination (embossing, folding, printing, etc.). It offers customers extensive customization options to suit their present needs or manage different needs arose over time. The machine can be configured to process inline a mother paper roll with width of 1200 mm or two rolls of 600 mm placed side by side. 12 DIGITAL CONTENT MAGAZINE is configured, as the AS Line for placemats of OMET, with star wheels to ensure perfect stacking of the product, even at high speeds. The stacker placed under the star wheels includes an automatic waste disposal system which prevents the operator from intervening on the machine in person. The FV Line was created to satisfy the market for medium and large runs of white embossed napkins ‘with napkin dispenser fold’, ie those napkins that fit into the dispenser on the bar counter or in fast food chains and whose fold facilitates the gesture of taking the napkin. This type of napkin is typical of the American market but its use is spreading rapidly throughout Europe. Upon request, the FV Line can be combined with optional multiple printing stations. The machine can produce napkins in sizes 20x20 cm to 30x30 cm and can be coupled with packaging machines of various types. The maximum speed that the FV can reach is of 300 meters per minute for a production of 4/6000 napkins per minute. The aspects related to the job changeovers are particularly taken care of since the machine needs to be quick and easy to perform. “Compared to 50 minutes spent on the standard exchange format with the other machines, FV Line runs the job change in 2 minutes!”, states Roberto Perego. “The FV Line has been designed and prepared with the greatest accuracy to be ready to debut during the week of IT’s Tissue. The fact of having a new building dedicated to the Tissue Division (after the transfer to Via Caduti a Fossoli), equipped with advanced instruments, has made the job infinitely easier,” says Roberto Perego with pride. INTERVIEW WITH MARCO CALCAGNI, DIRECTOR OF SALES AND MARKETING OF OMET SRL. Dalla fine del 22 DIGITAL CONTENT MAGAZINE W hat is the position of OMET as supplier of tissue converting machines for the production of napkins? MC: “Among the manufacturers of machines for napkins OMET offers today the most comprehensive range of products and is the undisputed leader in the European market with extensive coverage of the territory. OMET has a large installed base in Central and South America and Asia, all areas marked by a strong growth. Above all, Asia is a young market in terms of disposable napkins for which demand goes hand in hand upward to the degree of westernization of the various countries and population growth. The figure representing in the most striking manner the success of OMET from 1963 to today is the number of tissue converting machines installed around the world: about 700!” What is the revenue of OMET in the tissue segment? MC: “Of about 60 million euro of OMET Group’s turnover in 2012, 15 million derive from the tissue industry. Since the end of 2012, thanks to a relocation of some companies of the group (O-Pac has opened a new facility in Oggiono-Lecco leaving the one previously occupied to the Systems in Motion Division), the Tissue Division can count on a dedicated space and completely renovated workshop and design office in Via Caduti a Fossoli in Lecco, where the Division Systems in motion formerly was.” 2012, grazie a una rilocalizzazione di alcune aziende del gruppo (O-Pac ha aperto un nuovo stabilimento a Oggiono lasciando quello precedentemente occupato alla Divisione Systems in Motion, nel cui sito si è trasferita la Divisione Tissue), il comparto tissue può contare su uno spazio dedicato, e completamente rinnovato, per l’officina e gli uffici progettazione in Via Caduti a Fossoli a Lecco.” Can you give us an overview of the napkin market today? MC: “The well-defined market channels are three: consumer / retail characterized by large volumes of 1-, 2-or 3-ply napkins with designs developed by the marketing of major brands, restaurants / canteens with high quality services and custom designs, and the industrial market / ‘away from home’ channel, with high range products involving less customization. The world production resulted slightly higher than 1,000 thousand tons in 2010 for both consumer products and away from home products, with differences depending on the geographic regions: while the North American and Western European markets show a contraction, the markets of the Near, Middle and Far East grew more than 10% over the four years 2006-2010 (source: RISI).” Marco Calcagni We speak of a mature or still evolving market? MC: “The market for folded products is far from having reached full maturity even if one must make a distinction. If the market is saturated, in general, in developed countries, there are ample opportunities for growth in the countries with the highest rates of population development. The market also offers more room for growth and differentiation in the type of materials used and in the end-use. There are different habits from market to market. 24 DIGITAL CONTENT MAGAZINE types of napkin that force the manufacturer of machines to handle a wide range of customized products and that there is diversity of supply. In America, for example, they mainly use three types of napkins: 1-ply 25x25 cm for cocktail, 33x33 cm luncheons and 38x38 or 40x40 cm, 2-ply, for dinner. Generalizing, we can say that the napkin market has a stable growth trend if we consider the countries of the world in their entirety but there is room for growth in some areas of the globe. The reason for this growth will be, once again, the result of a change of mentality: throw away a used paper napkin is less polluting than wash the cloth napkin making use of cleaning additives. In addition to energy wasted, it produces pollution because of detergents discharged into the environment. The degree of innovation in the market, however, plays a rather important role. Among the innovations that promote the growth of the sector is worth mentioning the development of nonwoven products for uses other than domestic. The rigid materials tablecloths for cleaning mechanical parts or the use of non-woven fabric in the industry are market niches still partially unexplored.” What are the challenges a converter of napkins faces today? MC: “The large volume production of custom designed and printed napkins is a rarity. With the reduction in volumes, it is urgent for the converter to introduce machines that offer quick changeovers and reduced set-up waste in order to minimize the downtime impact and be able to face just-in-time deliveries. Often it is the manufacturer that gives input on technical novelties, almost always well received because the market is very receptive both in the restaurant and domestic use.” What are the products that OMET offers to the market in this regard? MC: “Customers want to rely on efficient and reliable machines that help them stay competitive in the consumer market while reducing investment in capital equipment. OMET perfectly understands this need and has revolutionized its own lines of tissue converting machines to offer the market a complete range of machines for the production of napkins with extensive customization options, according to the needs of the customer. The main models are identified in the renewed range TV 840: TV 840.6, TV 840.5 and TV 840.8. The main novelty, even if not the only one, is the possibility to optimize the machine productivity on the basis of the napkin size for volumes up to 5000 pieces per minute. In doing so it is possible to know in advance the cost of production and simply search for the best balance costs/ revenues.” This is also true for machines dedicated to medium production runs? MC: “Yes, of course. Our line TV 503 is parameterized for medium production volumes and is the machine best suited to convert customized napkins or with high-quality prints up to 8 colors. From our experience in the field of flexographic printing, we borrowed a fast and innovative system of job changeover that provides the reach of the printing register without waste.” What are the major and most recent innovations on OMET’s machines? MC: “OMET always focuses its efforts of research and development not only in the construction of machines with high-level performance but also in the design of the individual groups that, taken together, form the machine itself. The ability for the customer to choose the best machine configuration and maximize the effectiveness of performance has led designers to review and improve the various groups countless times, always in search of perfection. In any case, OMET pursues a strategy of high profitability of the machines in production combined with ease of use and low maintenance. Among the latest innovations proposed, it is well worth to mention the embossing / lamination cassette that was created to ensure job changes to be made quickly and with ease. The unit can be configured to work point-topoint / derl / desl embossing with different designs and even used for traditional embossing. The concept is simple, the drawer contains the embossing cylinders and can be replaced completely and in a rather intuitive way when changing the job. On all the machines of the TV 503 Line the groups for converting traditional napkins (c-fold) and dispenser napkins (bar) are available. A major innovation for the European market is represented by the TV 840 Line with mechanical ‘bulk pack’ conveyor for the production of family packs. The family packs so conceived, already widespread in the American market and now arrived in Europe, represent a comfort product for the restaurant industry.” What is, in chronological order, the latest machine presented by OMET on the market? MC: “The new FV which debuts in this end of June 2013. It is a machine to vacuum-fold napkins meant to produce mostly white napkins with dispenser napkin fold (cross folded), bookfolded products and printed products of high quality. MC: “No. In the US only, for example, vacuum-fold means large numbers of neutral napkins. The idea is to propose the FV Line in 3 main versions: 8-lane for large productions, 4 and 2 for lower volumes of printed products. The FV Line machines allow to start from the mother roll of paper (whose width depends on the paper mill that produces it, usually from 2400 to 5000 mm), then cut and emboss.” OMET’s tissue converting machines are all dedicated to the napkin sector? MC: “No. OMET also manufactures machines for the production of place-mats for trays. In this regard, a few years ago we had the great idea to create a machine that could print two coordinated products (napkin and place-mats in this case) using the same groups and sharing the printed subject. These machines rely on a combination technology and bring undoubted advantages in terms of costs and production times. OMET is also a leader in the production of machines for converting interleaved towels, semiinterleaved and with several folds. These machines, belonging to the AS line, are the only ones to handle different types of fold only changing one of the groups, in this case the folding plate, and can be supplemented with additional groups of embossing/ lamination point-to-point, derl or desl.” What can you say of the IT’s Tissue initiative? MC: “The idea came from a group of 12 companies belonging to the tissue industry with the aim to create a moment where all businesses open their doors and show the Italian technology to the world. The event aims at offering a new service to customers (optimize visits to the Italian tissue districts with minor investments for the customers and the possibility to see the machines in operation) accompanied by class events and a social program of all respect.” La AS Line di OMET per la produzione di asciugamani in carta OMET AS Line for paper towel production Stories of excellence OMET sostiene i primi passi di Anna purna, parte del Gruppo francese CGMP OMET supporting the first steps of Anna purna, part of CGMP Group, France INTERVISTA CON CÉLINE BOURDIN-STEPAK, PRESIDENTE DI CGMP E FRANÇOIS BOURDIN, AMMINISTRATORE DELEGATO. FROM THE FIRST CHAPTER OF THE MONOGRAPH BOOK “50 years of Passion and Excellence” written by Chiara Mauri. I t all began on a very cold Friday morning in 1963 - the first day of February 1st, to be exact, was the moment OMET was born. The weather forecasters were reporting an icy end to January and an imminent new cold spell with abundant snowfalls. In Milan, the temperature dropped to minus 10 °C on 31st January and minus 11 °C on 1st February; and the cold spell continued all Winter and into Spring, making it one of the worst of the entire 20th Century. He was opening something new, and he chose to do it on a Friday, the last working day of the week, so that he could have a full week at his disposal on the following Monday. Il lavoro sarebbe cominciato senza preamboli, a pieno regime. Work at OMET would start full time from day one! There were no sensational stories in the newspapers on 1st February that year. OMET had been established, but it was not the most important news item of the day. In fact, OMET was one of many small companies launched on the wave of enthusiasm that typified post-war reconstruction, which created what became known as the ‘thirdcapitalism’ phenomenon that remains one of the most characteristic traits of entrepreneurial Italy to this day. The CENSIS began writing about the brilliant performance of a free and dynamic Italy in its ‘Reports on the social situation of the Country’, and described them in picturesque terms that soon became part of common La sede OMET di Via Caduti Lecchesi a Fossoli a Lecco nel 1976 The headquarters of OMET in Via Caduti Lecchesi a Fossoli in Lecco in 1976 TV 500: la prima macchina per il tissue converting TV 500: the first tissue converting machine linguaggio comune: negli anni ‘70 l’Italia stava attraversando la “fase del cespuglio”, un intreccio spesso arruffato di imprese distribuite in distretti in cui qualcuna sarebbe seccata o marcita, altre sarebbero rimaste sottobosco, altre ancora sarebbero sopravvissute e si sarebbero consolidate. Poco a poco dal mondo semiclandestino del terzo capitalismo verso la metà degli anni 90 si è staccato un piccolo gruppo di imprese inizialmente definite “multinazionali tascabili”: imprese proiettate sin dalla nascita su scala internazionale e dotate di terminology: in the 1970s Italy was going through what was called the ‘bush stage’, an often dense jungle of companies spread around the districts, where some would shrivel and die, some would remain part of the undergrowth, while others would flourish and grow strong. No important names came to the fore during the ‘third capitalism’; the strength came from the combination of all the small companies, in their network of structures, in their simple and dynamic, if often unorthodox, social behaviour. There were many businessmen in this period who made large fortunes in enterprise adventures that, if considered on an absolute scale, were very small indeed. Little by little, at the end of the 1990s, a small group of companies detached themselves from the half-clandestine world of the ‘third capitalism’. Initially referred to as ‘pocket multinational’ companies, they attained international status, and with a combination of good organisation, shared dynamism, steadfastness from their founders, and DIGITAL CONTENT MAGAZINE 37 Stories of excellence Dettaglio delle macchine TV allora e oggi Detail of TV machines then and now strutture organizzative complesse, capaci di coniugare in modo equilibrato il dinamismo e la rapidità dell’imprenditore fondatore con la riflessione e la ponderazione del manager, imprese capaci di crescere. 38 DIGITAL CONTENT MAGAZINE careful and thoughtful management, they were companies able to grow. And, OMET was one of them. On 1st February 1963 the Italian state assigned the Free Territory of Trieste, which included the provinces of Udine and Gorizia, to Friuli Venezia Giulia. At that time, the American Government was pre-occupied with the Cold War, so Italy entered negotiations with the British Government in an attempt to limit the Franco-German dominance of the European Common Market. The Common Market became The European Union, and the number of member states, which remained static at six from 1957 to 1973, has now grown to 27 - yet talk about the Franco-German Axis still dominates. Even after over 50 years, the EU has difficulties in agreeing economic, political, and social union, and where the balance between central and devolved power should be. Europe has always been a reality for OMET, but ever since Monday 4th February 1963 Angelo Bartesaghi was looking to see and be seen far from Italian shores. In its first 50 years, OMET managed to install at least one press or system in 25 of the 27 countries in the European Union. Outside of Italy, it now has customer installations in Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Nei suoi primi 50 anni OMET ha installato almeno una macchina e/o un sistema di movimentazione in 25 dei 27 Paesi dell’Unione Europea: oltre all’Italia, Austria, Belgio, Bulgaria, Cipro, Danimarca, Estonia, Finlandia, Francia, Germania, Grecia, Irlanda, Lituania, Malta, Paesi Bassi, Polonia, Portogallo, Regno Unito, Repubblica Ceca, Romania, Slovacchia, Slovenia, Spagna, Svezia, Ungheria. Denmark Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Lithuania, Malta, Holland, Poland, Portugal, United Kingdom, Czech Republic, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Hungary – in fact, only Latvia and Luxembourg are missing OMET. At the same time as OMET came into being, Walter Bonatti, ‘the guy from Bergamo in Courmayeur’, and Cosimo Zappelli, ‘the male nurse from Viareggio’, conquered the Pointe Walker, the direct route to the Grandes Jorasses that had been climbed during the summer of 1938 by ‘three modest guys from Lecco’: Riccardo Cassin, Ugo Tizzoni, and Luigi Esposito. Nobody had ever seen them before in Courmayeur and, once the peak named “Colle del Gigante” was reached, they asked a guide the way to the base of Pointe Walker. Twenty-five years later, Bonatti and Zappelli climbed it in that very cold winter with just two ice axes, 35 pitons, two wooden wedges, and 125 metres of rope. Seeing how bad the weather conditions were, they decided to bring forward the climb by 24 hours, because “we wanted to make the North Jorasses at all costs.” It must have been their strong will and deeprooted moral strength that made the ascent possible via an inaccessible route. Angelo Bartesaghi could also have been considered a ‘modest guy from Lecco’, asking passers-by how to reach the base of the climb he could only have known by intuition. He was confident that he would reach the top at all costs, without being discouraged by severe weather conditions; he would go down and move a little bit to one side, and be prepared to set out again on new and more difficult ascents.
