In this respect the Conservatoire of Vicenza, from a historical and architectural point of view, enjoys dopo quello del 2001 sul Conservatorio al termine del restauro del complesso monastico ove ha sede e quello an excellent position: its home is the magical dimension of the Convent of San Domenico, which even today del 2003 sulle prime forme polifoniche del Quattrocento vicentino – ha l’obiettivo di far conoscere queste realtà continues to breathe vibrantly, so that the daily teaching and artistic training taking place bring the space alla società nazionale e internazionale. alive with harmonious sound. The historical research and artistic description by Vittorio Bolcato, updated following the recent church restoration, capably place the Conservatoire within the centuries-old cultural tradition of Vicenza. This book is thus the instrument and occasion to reinforce this rapport and to make known beyond personale docente e dei collaboratori tecnico-amministrativi, come pure al livello qualitativo degli studenti che our national borders one of the jewels of our region. con passione si dedicano allo studio della musica. Enrico Pisa Direttore del Conservatorio 10 11 Today more than ever, in a world that is dominated by economics and the velocity of action, the physical and mental space that we are able to dedicate to art is important: it is where we create art and perform, where we investigate its structure and rapport with other disciplines. The Arrigo Pedrollo Conservatoire of Music has the good fortune of being located in the convent of San Domenico, an extraordinary centre where the beauty of music and its challenging and satisfying study is perfectly married to the wonderful volumes. The updated edition of this book – the third following the 2001 edition concerning the completion of renovations of the convent complex, and the 2003 edition concerning the first polyphonic forms FOTOGRAFIE in fifteenth century Vicenza – aims to share this reality with an national and international audience. PHOTOGRAPHS The collection of photographs by Tommaso Cevese has been enriched by new images documenting the rediscovered splendour of the church of San Domenico, showing the space following the latest renovation works and its return to fruition. They reveal an environment that is rich with art and history, revitalised, brought to life by the music produced by students and teachers. The text by Vittorio Bolcato, also expanded with a section dedicated to the church, narrates the history of the convent from its origins to the present. It examines the numerous vicissitudes the complex experienced, each of which have left significant traces of both an artistic and social nature. The third part of the book illustrates the characteristics of the Conservatoire of Vicenza. This part is closely linked to the realities of the present, explaining that the Conservatoire is a vital environment, constantly evolving in order to keep abreast with changes in society and the resulting didactic innovations. As this journey takes place, we may describe the current situation as a stage within an ongoing process of improvement, a journey that progresses due to the dedication of both teaching and technical-administrational staff, similar to the level of quality attained by students who are passionately dedicated to the study of music. The Conservatoire, as well as producing musicians, has the important mission of contributing to the improvement of the quality of life in society, making available the fruits of its production to the citizens amongst whom it dwells. Only in this way does it find a daily purpose that transcends the preservation of music and knowledge for future generations: with all of its determination it will embrace this task so that the “future” happens now. The altarpiece, as Francesco Fontana writes provides an interesting document of the society and customs of Vicenza at the end of the sixteenth century. We see the hairstyles and clothing of the women who face each other in the foreground on the right side, or the lidded terracotta vessel and which is carried with a ribbon adorned with bows, or the bucket full of water, the embroidered towel in the chest bursting with precious cloth and engraved branches. The clothing, necklaces, buckles and belts of the Magi are shown with as much detail. Their faces have a familiar air, gentle and engrossed, far removed from exotic strains; the scene is set by the simple architecture of a barn where the customary classical column is suitably scaled down. A passionate traveller who emulated the glory of his relation Antonio, he was a Knight of the Order of Saint. He was the ambassador of Sisto V to the King of Persia to forge an alliance against Turkey. For having taken part in such great undertakings he was held in the highest honour by the Princes of Italy and of other countries. He had a constant affinity with Ferdinando, the Grand Duke of Tuscany. He was favoured by Innocent IX such that he was the secret messenger given tasks of the greatest importance, and was the companion and advisor to Cardinal Aldobrandini in the Hungarian expedition. He was the author of numerous and significant writings, while he carried out many enterprises worthy of a courageous soldier and great captain. Over the age of seventy, he was stolen too early for the good of Christianity and died in the bosom of his family on the 26th October 1604.
