Biographical sketch
Dr. A.C. Berardi has devoted her career largely to biomedical research towards hematopoietic stem
cells biology. She did her postdoctoral training in Dr. David Scadden’s laboratory at the Center of
Regenerative Medicine, Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Stem Cell Institute, Boston, USA. Her
research focused on the identification, the isolation and the characterization of hematopoietic stem cells
resulting in one of the first discoveries of hematopoietic stem cells from human bone marrow (Science
1994).
Berardi’s long-term research goal is to gain insight on stem cells from both adult tissue and cord
blood, by developing new long-term culture assays and animal models for the study of stem cells. Defining
better the stem cells will provide important information for designing rational methods of stem cell
manipulation for tissue regeneration and cell therapy.
In 2011, once again She isolated and characterized a new population that circulates in peripheral
blood of normal individuals which is capable to differentiate into both hematopoietic and endothelial cell
lineage as demonstrated by in vitro and in animal models studies (Blood 2011). She is now using this newly
discovered cell population as a model system to explore the relationships of vasculogenesis and
hematopoiesis, and to elucidate the molecular mechanisms that control fate determination and their
possible role in tumor angiogenesis. In parallel, using high throughput molecular analyses she started to
further define the molecular commonalities of different tissue stem cell populations, and to define the
molecular demarcation between normal and cancer stem cells and thereby to design a common approach
for therapeutic stem cell expansion. She has also been involved in projects such as the investigation of the
role of thyroid hormones on tendon tissue and tissue engineering.
She is the head of the Stem Cells Laboratory in the U.O. Immunology and of Transfusion Medicine
laboratory at the Pescara Santo Spirito’s Hospital. Using cutting-edge technologies and broadly
collaborative approaches, She is also committed to training the new generation of stem cell biologists and
to building a strong, unique and competitive stem cell research program that will ultimately benefit
patients.
