The end of an era
As we draw ,to the- ,.close of
1986, wee look back over ,the
year at some of the very
old businesses' of the Italian
comm'unity, which ,have, for
one reasoll or another, come
to the' end of their era. The
businesses we shall be considering have at least two
things in common: firstly,
they formed part of that
vast
area
of
industry
commonly called hotel and
catering;
secondly,
they
were run by hardworking
and solid members of the
Italian community of whom
we can all be proud; in
fact, these people, ~an 'be
regarded
representatives
of the anonymous thousands
of Italians' in Britain who
for so long have made a
positive contribution to this
country as well as to the
Italian
Community:
haidworking, honest, with
a
healthy concern for family
and friends.

Lie~o's
snack bar in, the
City of London was also
sold earlier this year ,by the
di Lieto brothers whose
livelihood it had been for
many years. A well known
location in the City, it is
set in a street familiar to
all -: Old Bailev. The bar
(pictured here) is riot 50
yards from the world's
mos't "famous" criminaL courts:
as
The Grosvenor House Hotel
in Guildford Street was in
the Collini family for some
60 years and was run by.
Maria Collini with the help
of her husband Augusto, a
" mo l e tta" for over 54 years.
Now the buSiness has been
sold and Maria, at the age
of 76 has earned her retirement.
.
Up • until earlier this year,
if you had asked a London
cab driver to take you to a
good Italian restaurant with
a friendly welcome and first
class service, like as not,
he would have taken you to
Peter Mario in Gerrard
Street, Soho.
Started in
1933. by Peter RizZi, it was
in the Rizzi family (and, by
marriage, the Conti family
- Fred Rizzi marrying Tina
Conti, his sister "Gloria
marryinl: Tina's brother,
Romano), until it, too, was
sold earlier in the year to
complete the Chinese occupation of Gerrard Street.
Following the sale, Romano
and Gloria have retired to
Italy.
you can .therefore "imagine
the tales that the di Lietos
have to tell' about som'e of
their famous ,(or notorious)
customers, supplying the last
meal to, amongst others,
Ruth Ellis,. the last woman
to hanged in Britain.
We all know the hours you
. have to dedicate to a snack
bar (or to a, hotel or restaurant) ,and di Lieto's too,
more than deserve a happy
and 'healthy retiremen~.
The restaurant saw many
famous personalities eat its
excellent food" like
Ava
Gardner, Danny La Rue,
Bjom Borg - the list is
endless.
Kenneth Williams
was almost part of "the
family and Henry Cooper
actually became part of the
family by marrying Fred
Rizzi's cousin Albina, who
was a waitress at the restaurant.
(In the photo.graph, Peter Mario restaurant in 1948).
The
hotel
stayed
open
during the war years and
saw many G.I.s pass through
its doors.
Over the years
people of all nationalities
have stayed in the hotel and
of course, from time to.
time there was confusion
with the other Grosverior
House!
Maria's five children were
all born and brought up at
the Grosvenor Hotise and the
stories that she and her
husband have to tell - well
perhaps some can be told in
future editions of BACKHILL.

avvenuto 16 storico incontro
che nessun' altra citta,. aveva
mai ospitato. Per la prima
volta si sono trovati assieme
i rappresentanti delle principali religioni, del mondo, -, i
quali hanno aderito all'invito

mondo.

"Arandora Star
,•
I
On Sunday, 9th November
1986 at the 11.00 a.m. Mass
at, St. Peter's Italian Church
a
congregation
assembled
for the annual Mass in
memory of the Italian internees who died when the ill
fated' Arandora Star was
torpedoed and sunk in the
Atlantic Ocean on iOth June
1940.
On the altar Padre Russo,
Padre Carmelo and Padre
Giuseppe started the solemn
Mass. Padre Russo referred
to Padre Giuseppe of' the
Consohita Fathers who was
interned in this country during the war and so Padre
Giuseppe
celebrated
the
Mass ably
supported by
Padre Russo, Padre Carmelo
and altar servers;
In the front benches of the
congregation sat
11 Console
Generale, Dr. Leo and survivors, relatives and friends.
Also represented were members of the Alpini 'all pre-
sent in the congregation
who had come to pay· homage to the deceased.
A solemn period came when
Padre Russo and two members of the congregation
walked down the centre of
the aisle to return with a
wreath for the Arandora
Star carried by a survivor,
GranUff. Serafino Pini with
Avv. del Giudice who placed
the wreath at the altar
steps.
During Mass our choir kept
the congregation in touch
with the Mass by their fine
rendering of the hymns.
After Mass a reception and
reunion was held at the
Casa Pallotti ~ocial Room.
Many attended to swap
memories of years passed.
all involved in BACKHILL,
those who voluntarily help
sell and spread the magazine

To all I wish a "Buon Natale" and a "Felice Anno

Finally seeing the light at
the end of the tunnel.
.
When Gerald Ronson's HERON group took over the
Lancia franchise for the
U.K. I imagine that the
transaction gave him more
than one sleepless night, and
perhaps
accellerated
his
ageing process just a 'little.
Lancia in this country was
about as popular as school
dinners; thought of as apalling rot-boxes that were
potentially lovely, but flawed by terrible bodywork, the
engines -were. good, but they
used _to fall out of the
bodies!
U.K. but that has not stopped it exce~ding worldwide
sales targets and a new 4
wheel drive version has
just been added to the
range (though that probably
will not be coming to Britain). The Delta range has
just been revised, with new
steering geometry, fuel injection, and with -its latest
cousin the HF, 4 wheel
drive, Turbocharged 2-litre

The Dino engined and Bertone styled devil with a
plastic body and weight of
only 908 kg. The car won
around 500 races and won
Lancia three world titles.
There were only 400 made,
but it was the first in the
true concept of the special
car being built just for rallying; Lal\cia led, the. rest
followed!
The future for Landa? Victories on the Rally circuits,
increased profitability and
with the past two or three "
years as an indication, a
major success in this country and worldwide.

All that is over. Lancia is
most definitely back with
the sort of recovery that
Fiat will now be hoping. to
promote in Alfa Romeo
(now that it reluctimtly
owns it). The Birmfngham

most impressive line:;up for
years. 'Lancar' s' managing

A passionate defence 6f Ron

Ferguson as United' manager? No. In fact the above
is a 'direct quote from
'BACKHILL
Sportlight
for
the month of June 1981
when United dismissed their
last ,manager, Dave Sexton.
That article makes interesting reading five and a half
years later:•

"Loyalty produces its own
rewards and' I, for. one,
could· hardly believe that a
club which finishes 'with
seven 'consecutive' wins, 'ends
up 7th in the first division
after an appalling injury
crisis could show such lack
of judgement and basic humanity that they sack a
manager of the integrity
of Dave Sexton. The Board
must have incredibly short
memories for only last year
the, team were runners up
for the league title and,
the year before that, beaten
cup finalists." So how does
Mr. Atkinson's record compine with that of his· predec~ssor? Well,
the F.A.
Cup has· been won twice
and United have not finished
lower than 4th in the First
[)ivision during his reign.
