The
history.
Lucca, 1942.
Ilvo Fontana, crafter of precision engineering instruments, received a prestigious commission
from the Italian Navy: to design and build a new model of watch for their pilots. This
challenge meant satisfying the high quality standards of the Navy and respecting very precise
technical specifications, but above all guaranteeing maximum visibility and reliability in any
light or weather condition. However circumstance at that time did not allow the project to
materialize. In 2000 Italo Fontana, Ilvo’s grandson, discovered these precious designs, which
were to become his source of inspiration for the creation of the first U-Boat watch and his
new dimension in time.
U-Boat watches are characterized by their strong identity, large size, perfect legibility in
all light and weather conditions, along with its bold and distinctive design: the left crown
protected by a specially designed safety cover.
Every individual U-Boat watch is handcrafted in Italy and each tiny detail is overseen by
Italo Fontana.

CINTURINO: in cuoio marrone. Lavorazione e finitura artigianale,
larghezza 23/23 mm, fibbia in titanio doppio ardiglione.
Fondello, cassa e lunetta sono ricavati per successive lavorazioni
ad asportazione di truciolo da barra di titanio grado 5 e molteplici
controlli dimensionali. La finitura superficiale è ottenuta con
trattamento di micropallinatura. Tutte le incisioni sull’orologio
sono eseguite con pantografo meccanico. Il quadrante in ottone,
con targhetta matricola riportata, è inciso al pantografo meccanico,
trattato galvanicamente e riempito manualmente con smalti e pasta
luminosa.
Prima del montaggio finale ogni orologio viene assemblato senza
movimento e quadrante e posto in autoclave ad una pressione di 40
bar per verificarne la presso-resistenza e l’ermeticità.
La corona di carica dell’orologio U-42 è formata da due parti:
una solidale con la tige del movimento, l’altra con la testa di presa;
questa è incernierata alla prima per mezzo di un perno, costituendo
un giunto snodato.
Questa configurazione permette di avere una corona che sporge
notevolmente dal corpo dell’orologio, per le operazioni di carica e
rimessa, e di averla in posizione protetta, diminuendo l’ingombro
laterale, quando non è usata.
Questo tipo di corona risponde a delle precise specifiche di
impiego:è assolutamente necessaria per quelle attività che
richiedono l’uso dei guanti come in alcune operazioni subacquee,
sia professionali sia ludiche, ed in alcuni ambienti come per
esempio zone artiche.
La tenuta stagna sulla porzione di corona solidale con la tige è
assicurata da una guarnizione a labbro in PTFE energizzato e da
una coppia di anelli o-ring.
All’interno della parte esterna vi è un sistema elastico, costituito
da un cilindretto di elastomero ed una sfera, che determina una
limitata rigidità assiale per facilitare le manovre di carica e
rimessa.
Il quadrante è costruito in lastra di ottone. Tutti i riferimenti e le
iscrizioni sono ottenuti per incisione meccanica a pantografo e,
successivamente al trattamento superficiale, riempiti manualmente
con smalti e paste luminescenti.
STRAP: brown leather handcrafted, width 23/23, and fitted with
a titanium tongue buckle. This astonishing and exceptionally rare was designed with a
reinvented hand winder made from the same Grade-5 Titanium
that was used for the back case, case and bezel.
All engravings on this piece are carried out by mechanical
pantograph, including the brass dial with plate located, which is
galvanised and finished with a bright enamel paste.
The pressure resistance of this piece is tested in an autoclave at
40 bar before the final assembly is completed. The U-42’s winding crown was built in two parts:
One is attached to the movement stem whilst the other is hinged
to it with a pivot. This gives a flexible joint configuration which
allows the crown to protrude considerably from the watch itself
for winding and setting, yet returning it to a protected, hidden
position - diminishing the side clutter when in action.
This type of crown is imperative under certain conditions as it
is absolutely necessary for activities during which gloves are
required such as underwater operations and environmental
practise at Arctic temperatures.
The water-tight crown protection attached to the stem is assured
by a clipping gasket in energised Polytetrafluoroethylene and by
an O-RING twin-arrangement. The dial is made with a slab in brass. All engravings on this
piece are carried out by mechanical pantograph, including the
brass dial which is galvanized and finished with a bright enamel
paste.
