LE SEZIONI DEL FESTIVAL
Concorso Internazionale (CI)
Selezione di 24 documentari inediti in Italia. Saranno giudicati da una Giuria Internazionale – composta da tre membri – che assegnerà i seguenti premi: Premio al miglior lungometraggio (8.000 euro), Premio al miglior mediometraggio
(4.000 euro), Premio al miglior cortometraggio (2.500 euro), targa “Gian Paolo
Paoli” al miglior film etno-antropologico. I film concorreranno inoltre al Premio
MYmovies.it – Il cinema dalla parte del pubblico.
Panorama (P)
Il documentario è uno dei punti di eccellenza del cinema italiano contemporaneo. Il Festival propone sette lungometraggi rappresentativi della produzione 2013.
Premio Syracuse University in Florence
Grazie alla collaborazione con SUF – Syracuse University in Florence, i cortometraggi del Concorso Internazionale concorrono anche al Premio Syracuse University in Florence (1.000 euro) assegnato da una giuria composta da studenti.

Etudes sur une ville: PARIS (EV)
La sezione - realizzata in collaborazione con Ambasciata di Francia, Istituto Francese d’Italia, Istituto Francese di Firenze - presenta una selezione di film che vedono
protagonista la città che, da sempre, è fonte di ispirazione per la settima arte. La
proiezione di Etudes sur Paris, unica opera conservata del cineasta d’avanguardia
André Sauvage, sarà accompagnata dal concerto del Quatuor Prima Vista.
Father & Son: un viaggio nel cinema (F&S)
Doppia retrospettiva dedicata a due tra i più significativi autori del cinema europeo: Marcel Łozin’ski e Paweł Łozin’ski, padre e figlio che, attraverso le loro opere,
hanno raccontato oltre quaranta anni di storia del loro paese, la Polonia. L’evento
è realizzato in collaborazione con l’Istituto Polacco di Roma, Polish Film Institute
e Krakow Film Foundation.

FESTIVAL SECTIONS
International Competition (CI)
A selection of 24 documentaries, all Italian premieres. They will be judged by an
International Jury made of three members that will assign the following prizes:
Best Feature-Length Documentary Award (8,000 euro), Best Mid-Length Documentary (4.000 euro), Best Short-Length Documentary Award (2.500 euro), “Gian
Paolo Paoli” Award to the Best Ethno-anthropological Film. The films also compete for the MYmovies.it – Audience Award.
Panorama (P)
Documentary is one of the flagships of contemporary Italian cinema. The Festival presents seven feature-length documentaries that represent the best of 2013
national production.
Syracuse University in Florence AWARD
Thanks to the collaboration with SUF – Syracuse University in Florence, the short
films of the International Competition also compete for the Syracuse University in
Florence Award (1,000 euro), awarded by a jury of students.
cinemaitaliano.info – CG Home Video AWARD
The Italian films will compete for the cinemaitaliano.info - CG Home Video (www.
cghv.it). The winner, chosen by a jury composed by the editors of Cinemaitaliano.
info (www.cinemaitaliano.info), will be offered the opportunity to be released in
DVD and distributed throughout the country, in the collection “POPOLI doc”.
MYMOVIES.it - Audience Award

Etudes sur une ville: PARIS (EV)
The section - in collaboration with the French Embassy, French Institute of Italy, French
Institute of Florence - presents a selection of films where the city of Paris, which has
always been a source of inspiration for the seventh art, is the protagonist. The projection of Etudes sur Paris, the only totally preserved work of the avant-garde filmmaker
André Sauvage, will be accompanied by the concert of the Quatuor Prima Vista.
Father & Son: a journey into cinema (F&S)
Double retrospective dedicated to two of the most significant authors of European
cinema: Marcel Łozin’ski and Paweł Łozin’ski, father and son who, through their
works, have narrated more than forty years of history of their country, Poland. The
event is organized in collaboration with the Polish Institute in Rome, Polish Film
Institute and Krakow Film Foundation.

LE SEZIONI DEL FESTIVAL
Lontano da Utopia (LU)
Sezione non competitiva incentrata su storie di comunità e popoli di vari paesi in cui
l’aspirazione a conseguire migliori condizioni ha preso la forma dell’azione collettiva: a difesa della propria sopravvivenza e identità, contro la repressione e gli abusi di
chi sta al potere. A volte questa lotta sembra arrestarsi, fallire, o prendere la strada
sbagliata. In questi momenti la condizione umana sembra lontana da Utopia.
Progetto Tandem con Documentarist – Istanbul Documentary Days (TT)
Come primo passo di una collaborazione a lungo termine con Documentarist
– Istanbul Documentary Days, uno dei festival di documentari più interessanti
e vivaci in Turchia, presentiamo una selezione di documentari turchi di recente
produzione. La selezione descrive le trasformazioni in corso della Turchia, tra
Occidente e Oriente, tra tradizione e modernità. TANDEM – Cultural Managers
Exchange Turkey - European Union, è un’iniziativa di European Cultural Foundation (Amsterdam), MitOst (Berlin), Anadolu Kültür (Istanbul), con il supporto di
Stiftung Mercator (Essen).
Eventi Speciali (ES)
Film ad alto contenuto spettacolare e che affrontano temi di grande attualità, per
celebrare il cinema documentario ai suoi massimi livelli. Con Mothers, il Festival
partecipa all’iniziativa “Respect Woman” che lega tutta la “50 giorni di cinema
internazionale a Firenze”. Si riconferma inoltre la collaborazione con il Centro di
Cultura Contemporanea Strozzina: Soran fait son cinéma è il nostro contributo al
tema della mostra: “Territori Instabili - Confini e identità nell’arte contemporanea” (fino al 19 gennaio 2014 al CCC Strozzina, Palazzo Strozzi, Firenze).
Doc at Work
Un nuovo spazio, aperto a tutti gli appassionati per conoscere da vicino il mondo
del documentario. L’auditorium di Santa Apollonia ospiterà un programma di incontri, workshop, dibattiti con gli autori. Dal 4 al 7 dicembre l’evento Industry per
addetti ai lavori con presentazioni di progetti e rough cuts di fronte ad un pubblico
di buyers e commissioning editors. L’evento è realizzato grazie al sostegno di Regione Toscana e FST - Fondazione Sistema Toscana.
Doc at Work - Panorama in cantiere (PIC)
In collaborazione con Documentaristi Anonimi - Associazione Documentaristi Toscani e Cinemaitaliano.info, il Festival presenta due documentari italiani ancora
in fase di realizzazione. Un’occasione per conoscere il dietro le quinte del lavoro
di documentarista.
Doc at Work - How I did it
Appuntamento con i registi presenti al festival. Verranno proiettate e analizzate alcune sequenze significative dei film in programma per scoprire il processo creativo
e le strategie messe in atto nella realizzazione di un documentario.

Far from Utopia (LU)
This non-competitive section focuses on stories of communities and peoples of various countries in which the aspiration to achieve better conditions took the form of
collective actions: to defend their own survival and identity, against repression and
abuses of those in power. Sometimes this struggle seems to stop, fail, or take the
wrong road. At such times the human condition seems far from Utopia.
Tandem Project with Documentarist – Istanbul Documentary Days (TT)
As a first step of a long-term partnership with Documentarist – Istanbul Documentary Days – one of the most interesting and vibrant documentary film festival in Turkey - we will present a selection of some of the new Turkish creative
documentaries. The selection describes the ongoing transformations of Turkey,
between West and East, between tradition and modernity. TANDEM – Cultural
Managers Exchange Turkey – European Union, is an initiative of the European
Cultural Foundation (Amsterdam), MitOst (Berlin), Anadolu Kültür (Istanbul), and
supported by Stiftung Mercator (Essen).
Special Events (ES)
Films of certified entertaining value and that address important topics, to celebrate documentary film at its best. With Mothers, the Festival participates in “Respect Woman” that connects all the “50 days of international cinema in Florence.”
We confirm the collaboration with the Centre for Contemporary Culture Strozzina:
Soran fait son cinéma is our contribute to the theme of the exhibition: “Unstable
Territories - Borders and identity in contemporary art” (until January 19th 2014 at
CCC Strozzina, Palazzo Strozzi, Florence).
Doc at Work
A new space, open to all who are passionate about documentary cinema, to get
closer to the world of the documentary. The auditorium of Santa Apollonia will host
a program of meetings, workshops, discussions with the authors. From December
4th to 7th: the Doc at Work Industry Event with projects and rough cuts presentations
in front of an audience of buyers and commissioning editors. The event is organized
with the support of the Tuscan Region and FST - Fondazione Sistema Toscana.
Doc at Work - PANORAMA WORK IN PROGRESS (PIC)
Thanks to the collaboration with Documentaristi Anonimi - Associazione Documentaristi Toscani e Cinemaitaliano.info, the Festival presents two films Work
in Progress. A special opportunity to closely observe the creative process and to
learn about the behind the scenes of the work of a documentary filmmaker.
Doc at Work - How I did it
Daily meeting with the filmmakers present at the festival. Significant sequences
of the films in program will be projected and analyzed to find the creative process
and the strategies used in the production of a documentary.

Costa da morte è una regione della Galizia, in Spagna, considerata ai tempi
dell’Impero romano il luogo dove il mondo aveva fine. È uno spazio in cui la terra,
il cielo, la roccia dominano il paesaggio. Il territorio e i suoi abitanti sembrano
immersi in una sorta di eternità dove la vita è inscindibilmente legata al luogo.
Come filmare questo ambiente e i suoi abitanti? Come filmare questa vita? Il film
lavora su questi interrogativi, costruendo, inquadratura dopo inquadratura, un
ritratto in movimento di corpi e territorio riuscendo a costruire splendidi quadri
animati, brulicanti di vita e di tempo.

was considered as the place where the world ends. It is a location in which the
earth, the sky and the rocks dominate the landscape. Its inhabitants seem immersed in a sort of eternity in which life is directly bound to the place. How to
film this environment and its inhabitants? How to film this life? the film works
on those question by making, take after take, an animated portrait of time
and space, of bodies and territory being able to create animated portraits, full
of life and time.

contaminata misura 20.000 Km2. Il film costruisce un ritratto della vita delle persone
che, abbandonate a loro stesse, abitano ancora oggi lungo il fiume Tetcha, nel bel
mezzo di un placido inferno radioattivo. Un esperimento cinematografico di grande
rigore che si avvale di soluzioni visive originalissime per rendere visibile l’invisibile.

Come restituire la realtà, varia e imprevedibile, di chi frequenta il Progetto Ponterosso, centro di socializzazione di Firenze aperto a varie categorie di marginalità? Il film
si affida ad una narrazione fatta di scarti, interruzioni, pause, ma anche di rivelazioni
improvvise che illuminano la monotonia di giorni che sembrano infiniti. La vita non
è stata tenera con nessuno dei protagonisti di Per Ulisse. I loro racconti, le loro confessioni, la loro creatività, sono il dono prezioso che questo film fa a tutti noi.

Si nascondono nelle cavità della città di Odessa come lontre dimenticate. Si cercano addosso i buchi della volta prima o gli spazi vuoti in cui infilare sempre l’ennesimo ago. Sono giovanissimi ed eroinomani e questo film li accosta e li ascolta,
calandosi nelle voragini della tossicodipendenza e dei suoi orrori con sguardo
lucido e senziente. Un urlo che è al tempo stesso di coraggio e di disperazione.

river, in the middle of a placid radioactive hell. A cinematic experiment, of great
rigor, that uses highly original visual solutions to make the invisible visible.

endless. Life has not been kind to any of the protagonists of Per Ulisse. Their stories,

in un vecchio film, racchiude un piccolo mistero, affrontato tornando, dopo
vent’anni, in quegli stessi luoghi. Questo film è un atto d’amore nei confronti
delle esistenze ai margini e della poesia delle cose semplici come la capacità
di stupirsi per il volo di una coccinella.

In Romani language, Loli Kali Shuba means a red and black coat, but it’s also
the nickname given by the Romani children of Trans-Carpathia to ladybirds,
and the refrain of some kind of nursery rhyme. A song, recorded by chance
twenty years ago, becomes a mystery to be solved by going back to the same
location twenty years later. This film is an act of love towards marginal lives
and the poetry of simple things such as the capacity of being surprised by a
ladybird flying.

refined, intelligent and complete exploratory system, which dilates the time of today’s reality chronicle in order to photograph the very deep change in our world.

Alla fine della Guerra Civile Spagnola, a largo di Marsiglia stazionano due
navi ospedale cariche di centinaia di feriti provenienti dal fronte e rifugiatisi in
Francia. A loro furono indirizzate 300 lettere mai recapitate dalle autorità e poi
rinvenute, decine di anni più tardi, negli archivi di Bouches-du-Rhône (Francia). Intorno a questi documenti Julian Telle e Renaud Perrin costruiscono
un documentario d’animazione in stop-motion usando con originalità uno dei
materiali più comuni: l’acqua.

Lettres à la mer

At the end of the Spanish Civil War, two hospital ships stand off Marseille
shores hosting hundreds of wounded people coming from the frontline searching for refuge in France. Three hundred letters were sent to those people, but
they would never be delivered. They will be later found, decades after, in an
archive in Bouches-du-Rhône (France). Drawing inspiration from these precious documents, the two filmmakers shot an original animated documentary
using stop-motion and one of the simplest materials: water.

freight trains, often on the top of those trains. These women violate the law,
because even in Mexico helping illegal immigrants is a crime, but they are
glad to help people they don’t know, without any potential personal profit,
making the most of their sense of solidarity.

Il 10 aprile 1991 il traghetto Moby Prince si scontrò con la petroliera Agip Abruzzo,
causando la morte di 140 persone. Il documentario ripercorre la vicenda nel tentativo non di confutare la verità giuridica o di cercare nuove ipotesi sull’accaduto, ma di
ricostruirne la storia raccontando gli eventi e le drammatiche scoperte che si sono
susseguite negli anni dopo la strage. Ispessito da una approfondita ricerca di notizie
e di materiale d’archivio, il film riattualizza un pezzo dimenticato di storia italiana.

problematica della narrazione è scissa tra esigenze esplicative e mistero dell’evocazione. Ci si interrogherà su cosa resta della Storia, nelle storie, e nel filtro imperfetto dell’autore che le vaglia.

romanzo di formazione psichedelico, sui modi temporanei in cui una ragazza ha
risolto temi eterni come il piacere, la disperazione, la conquista dello spazio e la
sospensione del tempo.

response for their discretion, fill the apparently calm everyday life of this town
in the Parisian banlieu.

oppressed, the French philosopher Simone Weil decided to dive into the “real

of the human dignity of a worker with her own hand. In fifteen stations, as in the
Way of the Cross, La Vie réelle tells the experience noted down in the letters and
notes by the philosopher, evoking the pain, the oppression and the suffering
of the individual in a modern society driven by business and technology. A very
good example of that situation is La Défense, the commercial soul of Paris.

– che fa della rappresentazione uno strumento di supremazia e controllo.

Silenzio. Una voce inizia a raccontare la storia di una vita. L’inquadratura resta
fissa sul volto che forse è dell’uomo al quale appartiene la voce. Poi irrompe
l’esterno: lo spazio aperto, il suono del vento, passi, musica. Ma dura solo pochi
secondi, poi torna il silenzio. In questo breve ritratto, M. Łozin’ski riduce al minimo
la varietà dei materiali e sperimenta lavorando sugli elementi primi dell’articolazione estetica del film.

apre ad accogliere pratiche, forme estetiche e narrative provenienti dal cinema

How to Live (Jak z·yc‘) • di Marcel Łozin’ski
In un campo estivo organizzato dal Sindacato Socialista Polacco della Gioventù
(ZSMP) un comitato popolare viene incaricato di osservare e valutare i partecipanti
per poter così attribuire punti e penalità in vista del premio finale, da assegnarsi
a quella che sarà riconosciuta “la famiglia modello”. M. Łozin’ski sovrappone i
contorni del suo film a quelli del dispositivo disegnato dall’Istituzione, facendo
sì che il cinema lo analizzi e lo ricomponga in un racconto che ne capovolge il
senso originario.

Quiet. After a while, some voice over begins to tell the story of someone’s life. Suddenly, we are outside: the camera explores the open space, noise of wind, steps,

the primary elements of film language and aesthetics.

Institution: this way, film breaks down and recomposes the device itself into a story

stato manomesso e le immagini vengono usate per costruire una seconda versione

for him for a whole day of hope and expectation, to be cured.

As if they were doing a film exercise, a crew of young filmmakers walks down the
streets of Warsaw and realizes a few interviews. The film shows a first set of interviews the way they were actually realised. A second set is shown but the people
is now answering in the opposite way as they did earlier. A second version of the
“document” is thus presented that reverses the first. Partly essay, partly punk
experiment, partly comic sketch, this film should be viewed in the context of the
crucial, wild decade of the 80’s in Poland.

the guest rooms. The stoker fuelling the boiler, the scullion, the cook, the barmaid, the doorkeeper, and the hotel manager, everyone belongs in this small, tidy
universe. Everyone is tied to the same, primeval condition of existence: working.

On July 4th, 1946, the crowd in Kielce, Poland, slaughtered forty-two Jews. Forty
years later, in 1987, M. Łozin’ski visited those places and met some witnesses of the
carnage. During the interviews with his white-haired interlocutors, he doesn’t seem
to be interested in a detailed reconstruction of the individual episode of violence.
He is more keen on little anecdotes, details, rumours, gossip, personal opinions
and shared, implicit clichés, the scattered fragments of a big picture that actually
presents anti-Semitism as everything but accidental and unforeseeable.

After the invasion of Poland by the Soviet Union in 1939, Stalinist police locked up
in the prison camps of Kozielsk, Starobielsk and Ostaszkow about 15,000 people,
mostly officers of the Polish Army. In April 1943 in the forests of Katyn, near Smolensk, the first mass graves were discovered. In the film we cross the forest led by the
daughter of one of the Polish officers killed.

of two regions is a material, technical issue is both a break point and a joining link.

and flowers enthusiastically. A little farther, a few elderly people are sitting on the

makes way for some exchange on equal terms, some discussion of the most varied
subjects, such as the war, the disappointment in a spent long life, or the hopes of
those who still believe anything can happen – meet a dinosaur, or live for six hundred
years. Maybe defeat death.

working method: he updates an approach that was tailored to expose how propaganda worked in the People’s Republic of Poland, but can still very well cope, after
forty years, with the dictatorship of communication.

child he was. The different gazes of the protagonist filmed over the time meet and
overlap. M. Łozin’ski uses the documentary techniques to tell us a fairy tale.

This little short stands out among the recent works by M. Łozin’ski. Poste restante
combines two themes that recur in his filmography: observation and breakdown
of some production process, along with the openness to the enchantment and
wonder that are usually to be found in fairy tales. The film’s circular structure
opens and closes with some camera movement that scans a warehouse of paper
for pulping. In-between lies the long journey of a letter that will never be delivered:
a letter addressed to God.
Tonia and Her Children (Tonia i jej dzieci) • by Marcel Łozin’ski
Three people sitting at a table in a room. A heap of letters, pictures, and other
documents lie in disorder on the table; in the background, the flicker of a computer monitor. Wera and Marcel are the now old children of Tonja Lechtman, a Jew
and a pre-WWII communist. She was arrested in 1949 in the charge of being a spy
(for the Americans). The third person is M. Łozin’ski, the film director, but also
long-time friend of the other two, and a witness involved in the story that they are
trying to reconstruct.

Il protagonista del film è un uomo dedito alla cura e al mantenimento della “struttura”. Ovvero del penitenziario che dirige, ma anche del sistema di potere in cui
si inserisce e quello di pensiero e di valori su cui si regge. È un uomo che si
preoccupa di mantenere l’ordine e le convenzioni, valore supremo per la coesione
sociale. Non c’è alcuna condanna in questo film, nessuna morale, soltanto una
grande capacità di scorgere in una testimonianza individuale gli ingranaggi del
potere e della struttura.

Speranze e delusioni, lacrime e sorrisi, vecchie canzoni e storie difficili. Tutto ciò
si mescola nel racconto di una donna ucraina arrivata in Polonia per cercare una
vita migliore per se e sua figlia e finita a cucinare, stirare e pulire in casa del regista che decide di filmarla. Un rapporto sincero e intimo in grado di ricostruire il
percorso che trasforma una donna in un’immigrata, una persona con un vissuto e
una storia in un individuo al servizio di altri.

A Leszno Małe, un piccolo villaggio del nord della Polonia, arrivano gli addetti al
censimento per distribuire i moduli da compilare. P. Łozin’ski li accompagna con
una videocamera e una riserva di domande che sfuggono ai numeri della statistica. Dalla descrizione dei fenomeni collettivi si passa così all’attenzione alle vite

che era un tempo territorio tedesco, gli abitanti hanno fatto di questa vita sospesa
una memoria condivisa. In un paesaggio di grande suggestione e poesia, questa

Hope and disappointment, teardrops and smiles, old songs and difficult stories. All this blends into the story of a Ukrainian woman who came to Poland
in search of a better life for her daughter and herself, and ended up cooking,
ironing, and cleaning the house of the film director who decided to film her. A
sincere intimacy is thus created to reconstruct the journey that turned a woman
into an immigrant, a person with her own past and her own story into someone
at the service of someone else.

Episode of the collective project Across the Border (Uber die Grenze), the film takes
place at the border between Germany and Poland, that during different historical
periods was a place of conflict and strife. Forced by the Russians to leave their home
to go into what was once part of the German territory, the inhabitants have made of
this suspended life a shared memory. In a landscape of great beauty and poetry, this
memory emerges thanks to the memories that the protagonists tell the filmmaker.

vita e di speranza. Sullo sfondo un reparto ospedaliero in cui si svolgono sedute di
chemioterapia, in primo piano pazienti che si raccontano e che, intrattenendosi,
rimangono ancorati alla loro vita.

Il lavoro paziente di un gruppo di archeologi alle prese con alcune lapidi ed
iscrizioni coperte dalla vegetazione e dalla polvere del tempo. Pian piano la

di una storia, la vegetazione di un contesto. Ieri ed oggi, qui e altrove, vicino
e lontano, tragedia e vita quotidiana sono separati da un sottile confine che il
cinema può illudersi di superare.

passion. Night and day, in their fur or worn-out clothes, the ladies never miss

their loneliness. Once again, P. Łozin’ski directs his gaze onto the “other side of
the street” and finds out apparently non-meaningful lives that are elevated to a
metaphor of contemporary living.

hope. In the background, a hospital ward where chemotherapy sessions are performed, in the foreground the chatting patients who get their story across, and
thus show their attachment to life.
Inventory (Inwentaryzacja) • by Pawel Łozin’ski
The painstaking work of a group of archaeologists on some tombstones and
inscriptions covered with vegetation and the dust of time. The frame gradually is
enlarged and these minimal gestures acquire meaning; the stones become part
of a story, vegetation of a context. Past and present, here and elsewhere, nearby
and faraway, drama and daily life are separated by a thin line that the cinema
illusorily seems to cross.
Father and Son (Ojciec i syn) • by Pawel Łozin’ski
An RV, a destination – Paris – and a set of contrasting expectations. Rather than
a holiday, acceptance of risk: leave and rely on the other, without plans or safety
nets. Marcel is excited about going back to the place of his childhood, whereas
Pawel is thrilled by the idea of being together with his father, and ask him questions he has been keeping for a long time. All love includes thorns and wounds,
and Pawel’s version of the film exposes them all.

calore familiare. La costruzione di una gigantesca diga sul Nilo minaccia di distruggere
per sempre l’antico modello naturale di vita di queste persone.

Un capitolo importante della recente storia europea: il processo a Radovan Karadzic,
incriminato per crimini di guerra dal Tribunale Penale Internazionale per la ex Yugoslavia dell’Aja. La regista ricostruisce gli atti attraverso documenti sconcertanti (foto,
video, testimonianze) e rivela, attraverso la tecnica del frottage, compiuto nelle aule
del tribunale, la zona d’ombra che si nasconde tra i “fatti” di guerra, le prove materiali,
le immagini attraverso le quali è rappresentata e le loro successive interpretazioni.
LET THE FIRE BURN • di Jason Osder
Nel 1972 John Africa fonda a Philadelphia il MOVE, un movimento per la liberazione dei
neri d’America, che praticava uno stile di vita comunitario con un messaggio radicale
di ritorno alla natura e rifiuto della tecnologia. Il 13 maggio 1985, la tensione tra la
pubblica amministrazione di Philadelphia e il MOVE raggiunge il suo apice. Per ordine
delle autorità locali, la polizia lancia esplosivi di tipo militare su un edificio occupato
dal gruppo. Le telecamere registrano l’incendio che va intensificandosi e prende il sopravvento provocando la tragica morte di 11 persone (tra cui 5 bambini). Con il tempo si
scoprirà che le autorità avevano deciso di “incoraggiare il fuoco a bruciare”.
Min stulna revolution (My Stolen Revolution) • di Nahid Persson Sarvestani
Le recenti proteste in Iran risvegliano i ricordi della regista, di quando da giovane attivista fuggì dal paese dopo la rivoluzione del 1979, delusa dalla deriva autoritaria che
aveva fatto svanire i sogni di democrazia, all’indomani della caduta dello scià. Il film è
la ricerca delle sue compagne di lotta e del fratello Rostam, che fu poi giustiziato dal
regime. Finalmente le ritrova e scopre la verità sulle terribili torture che hanno subito
e sugli ultimi giorni di vita di Rostam.

Immersi nella tranquillità dei boschi, gli abitanti di Klity, a Kanchanaburi, Thailandia,
conducono una vita semplice. Si sono sempre alimentati con il pesce del fiume del
villaggio, ma da qualche tempo il fiume è stato contaminato dagli scarti di una fabbrica
che lavora minerali. Un giovane uomo si tuffa ogni giorno a pescare per la sua amata,

of the river and seasons of the year mark the life rhythm of its society. Although the
village seems materialistically deprived, it’s rich with the colours of life, laughter and
family warmth. The construction of a gigantic dam on the Nile put at risk the ancient,
natural pattern of people’s lives.

An important chapter in recent European history: the trial of Radovan Karadzic, indicted for war crimes by the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia
in The Hague. The film reconstructs the shocking acts through documents (photos,

courtrooms, the gray area that lies between the “facts” of war, testing materials, the
images through which war is represented and their subsequent interpretations.
LET THE FIRE BURN • by Jason Osder
In 1972 John Africa founded the MOVE, a black liberation group, with a communitarian life-style and a radical back-to-nature message and the refusal technology. On
May 13th, 1985, the tension between the city of and MOVE came to a deadly climax.
By order of local authorities, police dropped military-grade explosives onto a MOVEoccupied rowhouse. TV cameras captured the conflagration that quickly escalated
and resulted in the tragic deaths of eleven people (including five children). It was
only later discovered that authorities decided to “...let the fire burn.”
Min stulna revolution (My Stolen Revolution) • by Nahid Persson Sarvestani
The recent protests in Iran awaken the filmmaker’s memories to a time when as a
young activist she fled after the 1979 revolution, she begins a quest to find her surviving friends. Haunted by the guilt of abandoning her imprisoned friends and her
brother, Rostam, who was later executed, she finally finds them and learns about
their horrific torture and about Rostam’s final days.

Amidst the tranquility of the deep woods, the habitants of Klity, in Kanchanaburi,
Thailand, have always led a simple life. They have fed on the fish populating the
town’s creek, but for some time now the river has been contaminated by a mineral

today he has gone missing, as she eagerly awaits his return.

Ufuk è la figlia di una coppia turca che negli anni ‘70 ha militato nel partito comunista.
Dopo essere emigrati in Svizzera, l’armonia della famiglia si sgretola. La regista affronta
una crisi che la porta a intraprendere un lungo viaggio alla ricerca della propria identità.

Statue of Humanity è un’opera demolita dalle autorità turche prima che fosse terminata. Aveva la colpa di ritrarre due enormi figure in cemento armato in procinto
di scambiarsi una stretta di mano nei pressi del confine tra Turchia e Armenia. O
forse è l’arte che non può mai sottomettersi alle esigenze della politica.

Secondo i limiti stabiliti dalla Repubblica Popolare Cinese in materia di controllo
delle nascite, Xu Huijing - in quanto secondogenito - non sarebbe dovuto nascere.
Da questa particolare condizione esistenziale nasce l’esigenza di tornare al villaggio d’origine per raccontare l’ordinaria amministrazione delle procedure per
la procreazione controllata e mostrare la repressione che burocrazia e statistiche
esercitano sui corpi delle donne in età fertile.

bureaucracy and statistics carry out on the bodies of women of fertile age.

storie di fantasmi e “pornografia delle rovine” per formare uno psico-collage di
celluloide, alla ricerca di una storia collettiva perduta tra i resti di una città.

by some characters trying to retrace its memories through artistic actions and
performances. A film combining ghost stories and “the pornography of ruins” in
order to achieve a psycho-collage made of celluloid searching for a collective story
lost among the rests of the city.
