METROTIPO SpA
Firenze - Tunnel of Firenzuola
The new line will extend for approx. 78.5 km, connecting the new underground stations of Bologna
and Florence. It will start in the vicinity of the interconnection of San Ruffillo with the existing line
and ends at the station of Castello, where there will be the interconnection with the current overland
rail systems leading to the station of Firenze S.M. Novella.
The route comprises a series of 9 tunnels of lengths varying from 528 m to 16.752 km, interspersed
with short open-air sections on bridges, viaducts, cuttings and embankments.
Above-ground sections are in general very short, with the exception of the crossing of the Mugello
basin. In this section, of approx. 5 km, the line crosses the valley of the River Sieve, the rail line of
Faentina and the state road Traversa del Mugello. Here there is one of the communication posts
envisaged for the routing of trains on adjacent tracks, in the event of necessity. The other
communication post, on the Bologna side, is envisaged at the point of 20,5 km. Another feature of
the line is the Manoeuvre Station of S. Pellegrino for emergency manoeuvres, parking and
maintenance of trains.
The structural integration with the existing rail line will be via the interconnection of San Ruffillo.
This will allow freight trains to be routed to the Bologna-San Donato freight exchange centre and
towards the railway connections for Milan, Verona-Brenner, Padua-Tarvisio-Villa Opicina and
Ancona-Bari-Brindisi.
