Foreword Art traverses the centuries, marking the traditions and lives of people with increasing strength. Through this musical instrument and its craftsmanship a story is told of the great source of emotions and the memory of our roots. The basis of prof. Fabio Banchio’s book The Foremost Piedmontese Accordionists, makes us aware that distances strengthen our “piemontesità” instead of breaking that sense of belonging and becomes a bond between art and talent. This sentiment is often underlined by Gr. Uff. Michele Colombino, the President of the Associazione Piemontesi nel Mondo. Thanks to this book, you and I discover musicians of the highest level who have chosen to dedicate their lives to the accordion, a “superior” instrument. It illustrates a magnificent example of musical culture and study of emigration, thus reinforcing the need never to forget our origins and to strengthen unceasingly the relationship with our land. This is the only way that Beauty triumphs, becoming an incitement for future generations. This is the only way for Music to express, once again, its strong power to bind people together and the accordion becomes, it too..., the muse of peace, essential for the exchange of different cultures. Since the time of his diploma in Composition, Fabio Banchio has shown, and still shows, special care and attention to that discipline which is understood in a creative, unpredictable manner that is not without subtle and persistent irony. This makes him a musical character full of surprises. So this book combines “acquired knowledge” and “folk wisdom” around the accordion a tool both extraordinarily fascinating and multi-faceted. On the one hand this book confirms the rigor of his research and on the other the pleasant and surprising unpredictability which Fabio is able to communicate. Riccardo Piacentini Pianista e compositore Docente di Composizione al Conservatorio “G. Verdi” of Milan Founder of the Associazione musicale Rive-Gauche Concerti Le note risuonano con la stessa profondità delle parole… The notes resonate with the same depth of words... A wonderful journey into the heart of a play, as exciting as moving, bringing us back to the roots of our Piedmontese neighbors and brothers. It brings us to a shared memory and culture as, through the fate of these stars that reached the firmament of their art, a beautiful and touching story is drawn with a soft line, and then resounds in each of us. Following the pages rhythmically scanned by the magic of maestro Luca Zanetti and the sincere words of Fabio Banchio, we together “breathe” our land, our collective gift and certainly a part of our common evolution. Françoise Denoyer Journalist, «Haute-Provence info» Françoise Denoyer Giornalista, «Haute-Provence info» 6 7 Preface The accordion, considered as a fellow traveler for some, or potential means of status symbol for others, is one of the few instruments which can be fully claimed to be really popular. It is the favorite instrument of emigrants for its ability to play different styles and kind of music (including the ones linked to folklore); emigrants were fond of it for its ability to play easily and simultaneously the melody and accompaniment and for its ease of transportation and its affordable price. However, these reasons cannot fully explain its importance: the true reason is probably to be found in its ability to evoke, through the peculiarity of the tone-color and the “breath” of its bellows, the distinctive longing and human resignation of the emigration flows in the early twentieth century: Introduzione Insostituibile compagna di viaggio per alcuni, potenziale mezzo di affermazione sociale per altri, la fisarmonica è uno dei pochi strumenti che, a pieno titolo, può vantare di essere popolare. The large Italian populations who had emigrated to the Americas eased their homesickness with the sounds of accordion music. For those forced to leave their place of birth to earn a living in a foreign land, the accordion became a standard part of their luggage, a piece of home that they brought with them.1 La maggior parte della popolazione italiana emigrata in America alleviava la nostalgia di casa con le sonorità della fisarmonica. The tribute to maestro Michele Corino, accordionist from Cuneo who emigrated to America in 1947, is held in the Museo Regionale dell’Emigrazione of Frossasco. It is a meaningful and important prelude to the history of emigration and this book is the effort of three years of research and an ideal continuation of the Museum’s desire to become a temple to “piemontesità” and historic memory of the emigration. It aims to be a picture of the period, a record of the contribution (up to now unfairly overlooked by historians) made by Piedmontese emigrants to the spreading of the accordion and to the creation of its original repertoire. Starting from the extraordinary character of Guido Deiro, the greatest star of the American Vaudeville of the early twentieth century, and of his brother Pietro, I have outlined the human and professional story of those Piedmontese accordionists, composers and/or performers, who achieved within the twentieth century the highest artistic international awards: Michele Corino, accordionist of the EIAR (Ente Italiano per le Audizioni Radiofoniche) Orchestra conducted by maestro Cinico Angelini and composer of the worldwide hit Fisarmonica Impazzita; Mario Piovano, who was honored by accompanying Mirelle Mathieu, the Importante e significativamente precorritrice dunque, la presenza, all’interno del Museo Regionale dell’Emigrazione di Frossasco, di una sezione dedicata al maestro Michele Corino, fisarmonicista cuneese emigrato in America nel 1947. A young Piedmontese emigrant is steadily walking towards the center of the stage. The floodlights on his right are enlightening by degrees the outline of an instrument unknown to the American audience: the piano-accordion. He dresses elegantly: white flannel suit and black bow tie… He plays the Poet and Peasant overture followed by Dill Pickles Rag, My Treasure Waltz and ending with I Got a Ring on My Finger. While thinking «Now or never again…»1, Guido Deiro was not aware of the fact that that was the night he was forever engraving his name into accordion history. From that night on, he is Deiro, The World’s Foremost Piano-Accordionist, and the foremost American Vaudeville star in the early twentieth century. Prologue In the early twentieth century, the accordion achieved a level of popularity in the States that nowadays would be quite inconceivable. Borrowing the title from Flynn, Davison and Chavez’s monumental publication, this was The Golden Age of the Accordion, a historical period that lasted until the 60’s (with the exception of production interruption due to the Second World War). The production of accordions was wide and able to satisfy all kind of customers, mostly due to the technical improvements made by Italian manufacturers and the co-operation with the foremost artists like the Deiro brothers and Pietro Frosini. The 1931 catalog of the Guerrini Company was offering twenty-eight different models, whose cost ranged from $110 to $650, guaranteed for five years and with an identification number attesting the origin, preventing forgery. Those were the days of the true pioneers of the accordion, the professional artists who explored the musical possibilities of a new intrument and who set the early standards and traditions of performance. Very few of these artists became superstar whose names were household words; but to the accordion students, teachers, and professional performer of that era, they were musical idols whose compositions, transcriptions and other publications, radio appearances and public performances were eagerly awaited. In those days there were studios throughout the country that boasted from 500 to 1,000 students, with each styudio employing several dozen accordion instructors. Any student who showed exceptional talent was assured a job as an addiction to the teaching staff. Era difficile trovare un numero sufficiente d’insegnanti per soddisfare tutte le richieste.2 Among the main leaders of the American concert scene of the first half of the twentieth century, we find two young emigrants from Salto Canavese: the Guido and Pietro Deiro brothers. 1 Guido Deiro, Biography, in Guido Deiro’s Royal Method for Piano Accordion, Nicomede Music Co., Altoona, 1936, Vol. 1 2 Willard A.
