1. General information
This document provides a summary of the main references of Sdi in automation and
control system supply.
Hereafter, as a general framework, an introduction to Sdi products and their scope
follows, in order to facilitate the reading of the lists of references and technical data
sheets.
eXPert product package
eXPert is a products suite created by Sdi for the implementation of distributed control
systems (DCS) and systems for the remote control (Telecontrol) and it is the reference
product for all systems designed by Sdi from 2002.
eXPert is the result of the continuous evolution of the PSCS products family (Plant
Supervisory and Control System) whose versions WIN/PSCS 2nd, WINPSCS,
PSCS2000 were commercialized by Sdi since the early nineties.
Distributed Control System (DCS)
eXPert DCS product, designed according to a modular architecture, is purpose-built to
achieve high levels of reliability and security, without losing sight of the flexibility of the
architecture and the customer needs.
Both the electronic subsystems, both the control firmware, are designed to ensure a high
security level. Sdi focuses greatest attention to the selection of component parts with high
reliability, redundant circuitry and diagnostic checks for all those elements and/or
components which are relevant for the purposes of the safety integrity. The redundancy
of the modules and of the communication bus is always provided as a basic functionality
of the system.
A careful audit of the operator actions and a flexible and precise management of the plant
alarms, carried out by the control room operator workstations, enables customers to focus
daily operations on both functional and security aspects.
eXPert DCS manages various type of LAN and WAN connectivity (wired and wireless) in
order to link all system control nodes, all other field equipment and other interconnected
systems, to higher-level systems such as remote control centers or ERP business
systems, in order to convey data where they are better interpretable and usable.
eXPert DCS is a completely scalable and flexible product suitable for various
implementations and easy to adapt to customer needs and requirements both in terms of
system architecture and in terms of I/O size. eXPert DCS can manage up to 255 nodes
connected on the same network, up to 1,000,000 of physical I/O at the same time and is
very easy to expand allowing customers to capitalize the investment made in case of
successive system extensions. In addition to traditional I/O boards, particular attention is
focused on fieldbus interfaces if digital communication is available.
eXPert DCS, as well as performing control and regulation functions, can be equipped with
proper add-on to cover in a fully integrated solution specific requirements in terms of
security (SIL 3, according to IEC 61508 and IEC 61511), fire detection and gas leak
detection (F&G) and fire extinguishing.

SCADA, RTU, telecontrol and remote management

Sdi proposes its own highly integrated SCADA platform (eXPert SCADA) composed both
by the central system software (Development Tools and Runtime Applications) and by
field devices (RTU/PLC) installed at the focal points of unattended subsystems.
For this purpose the system as a whole has been designed to comply with safety features
"Functional Safety" described in IEC 61508 and IEC 61511; software system has been
developed and is being maintained in accordance with the "V-model".
Both RTU/PLC and central system, have been designed and evolved over time to meet
the most stringent requirements of the market in order to allow Sdi to continue proposing
its own platform in monitoring and control systems for critical infrastructure.
Each single element of the eXPert SCADA platform can be proposed in a redundant
configuration, allowing design of architectures with hot-backup functionalities. The
database system can handle up to 1,000,000 tags and can manage multi-level
hierarchical structures in an integrated way in order to quickly support the creation of
geographically distributed remote control systems.
The human machine interface (eXPert HMI) provided by the system, is highly flexible and
can run at the same time on single local stations (single or multiple monitor) , on remote
stations via WEB or in complex control rooms equipped with video-wall;
eXPert HMI configuration can be easily managed by the provided development tools both
for systems of small/medium size and for larger systems dedicated to critical distribution
infrastructure, managing thousands of animated objects on the displayed synoptics.
eXPert system allows to operate with field devices through different types of
communication network (telephone, LAN, WAN, wired and wireless), in single or
redundant configuration. The diagnosis of connectivity and the potential automatic
activation of backup connections allow the simultaneous use of different types of
connection in order to optimize use and costs of different devices and networks.

eXPert SCADA platform is concept and design to guarantee anahih level of scalability
and integrability allowing the system to easy interface third party RTU/PLC; similalrly,
RTU/PLC devices manufactured and supplied by Sdi (using standard communication
protocols of the family IEC IEC 870.5.101 and 870.5.104) can be easy integrated in preexisting systems not necessarily supplied by Sdi.
In case of particularly crital controlled processes (e.g. CNI), Sdi provides natively within
the eXPert SCADA solution, security functions based on DR (Disaster Recovery)
structures, which allow, in case of need, the immediate switch of all control functions, to a
secondary control center, completely equal (or in reduced configuration) to the main one.

Main Sdi typical applications
Sdi, thanks to its R & D laboratories and to the system commissioning department, using
its own hardware and software platforms to implement integrated DCS-ESD-F & G and
SCADA/RTU systems, has always reach the goal of a complete customer satisfaction
both during supply of complete turnkey systems and during supply of single products or
custom solutions to partners VAR (Value Added Reseller).
The experience of Sdi has contributed, through the provision of DCS and SCADA/RTU
systems steadily aligned with the technological requirements of the market, to ensure that
leading Italian companies such as ENEL and ENI Group could have and operate with
outstanding technological solutions.
Starting from first systems developped, in compliance with very strict requirements of
reliability and availability, Sdi formed a solid base of experience and project and
continued over time to evolve its products and its solutions.
Traditional applications are aimed to control and automation in the energy industry, in
particular power production plants (from traditional sources or renewable sources) ,
power distribution grids and networks, high and very high voltage substations, and also in

Oil & Gas industry, in particular off-shore extraction facilities and on-shore processing,
transportation and storage facilities.
The changing needs of the modern market have led always more Multi Utility Companies
to look with particular interest at technical solutions proposed by Sdi in order to better
manage and exploit their assets. For these specific customers Sdi provides command
and control systems (either local or remote) to manage power distribution grids and MV /
LV substations, natural gas distribution networks, integrated water cycle and rail transport
systems.
In addition to control systems and remote control, Sdi has gained great experience in the
Oil & Gas technical and fiscal "metering" solutions, for which applications provides
measurement systems, complete skids and EMS systems.

MAIN FEATURES

The system is based on the standard of communication and configuration definition IEC 61850 and uses the

MAIN FEATURES:
Acquisition and management of the automation, protection and interlock operating sequences. Processing of
analog signals with alarm with the production of threshold alarms or consent to the remote control sequences.
Redundant digital Inputs and integrity check on control relays. Use of LOOP boards for PID adjustments.
Interface to Compressors panels by serial MODBUS. Running of the plant by remote control using the interface
with the remote-operations system (I/O Server and remote control RTUs); on spot running by monitoring stations
(DCS HMI). Chronological report feature with resolution of 5 milliseconds. Remote self-diagnosis feature of the
remote control.

The composition of each Front End depends on the various type of DCS system in the plants.
MAIN FEATURES
Monitoring and remote control of the 8 storage plants managed by STOGIT. In each site there are a compression
plant and a treatment plant. The Font Ends produced by s.d.i. interface with DCS in the plants via OPC and
MODBUS interface, and/or third parts protocols; each plant is characterized by peculiarities that are solved with
specific interfaces by Front Ends.
Each Front End communicate with both centers (primary and backup for disaster recovery). In each center the
user stations can take control of the remote-controlled sites; dynamic process database is centralized in the
center SCADA system ( everyone in dual configuration), while historical data are stored in the filing station that
lean against an Oracle Server. The communication with the various centers is based on the IEC 60870-5-104
standard.

between measured values and expected values.
This simulator is based on WIN/GIPS (Graphical Interface Process Simulation) real-time mathematical modeling

The modem, connected via serial RS232C line with RTU, can be of type GSM Dual Band or PSTN. Each device
is power suppied with an energy station, with monitoring and diagnostic funcions of battery charge, at main power
of 230 Vac., The diagnostic informations are collected at RTU level using a serial RS232C connection. A group of
accumulators, 2 or 4 depending on the auxiliary output voltage (24 VDC or 48 VDC) requested in the substation,
is sized to ensure the continuity of operations in case of absence of mains supply (up to 12 hours of operation
with at least 30 operations).

MAIN FEATURES
High Voltage Substation Automation, Control and Gateway toward tele-control and tele-maintenance for 5

Gas (average 8 BSCMY Billion Standard Cubic Meter per Year) extracted in Libya is redirected toward Italy
through a pipeline about 550Km long which runs on the bottom of the sea at a maximum depth of 1.160 meters; a
compression station is located in Mellitah (Lybian coast), gas is pumped into national Italian network in Gela
(Italian coast). The only measurement points are located on the coasts.

The complete management of the network status required a local database (additional in respect to acquired
data) of 66000 calculated digital points, 8000 analog points,17000 strings and 3000 structured data points.

MAIN FEATURES
System supervises all remote control functions of cogeneration devices produced by ENEL. These devices are
connected via a GSM network. RTUs can be configured directly from the supervising system and operators
receive notification of all alarms and production data for each single device.
RTUs are interfaced directly with local power generating unit, manage local plant work according with electric and
heat demand, manage plant start and stop, manage historical data recording.
Central supervising station use a set of modems to connect RTUs, this guaranties a good way to expand system
in term of RTU number.

MAIN FEATURES
Supervision and telecontrol system of collection sewer Veronese coast of Lake Garda run by the Azienda
Gardesana Servizi (AGS).
The system consists of a coastline collector of about 60 km that collects waste water from municipalities, through
appropriate pumping stations, to the purification plant of Peschiera del Garda.
75 µSTAR RTU placed in special stations along the sewer, exchange digital and analog data and provide
automation logic at local and supervisory system.level.
The system also has the management function (call) of staff on duty with the possibility of connection to the
central system, through appropriate remote HMI.
