Cari Genitori,
Quest'anno scolastico abbiamo iniziato con gioia a
utilizzare le nuove aule per i bambini delle prime classi
della Primaria.

E' stato un progetto ambizioso con non poche difficoltà ma
è stato necessario, soprattutto per eliminare le aule nella
struttura di legno ed offrire uno spazio adeguato per i
nostri piccoli allievi.

Il budget ci ha dato molti vincoli ma siamo riusciti, grazie al
lavoro parsimonioso della nostra amministrazione, a
utilizzare parte delle nostre risorse per questo progetto.

Sono quattro aule costruite con alti standard di qualità ed
efficienza energetica che faranno stare al meglio i bambini.

exchange

In 1999, the Educational Committee of the Governing Board
of the European Schools approved a programme of exchange
between pupils in the Secondary cycle with the aim of giving
them an opportunity to practice their L2 and L3 in another
European School over a short period of time.
In principle all the European Schools take part in this
Exchange Programme supported by the Parents Associations,
encouraging the exchange between pupils, allowing families
to host a pupil and have their child hosted in return, thereby
fostering a real European spirit. The European Schools
Exchange Programme is becoming more and more popular:
thanks to it, pupils can discover new cultures, new ways of
living and an academic environment that is different from
what they know and experience at home. Above all, it
provides pupils with the possibility to meet new people and
make new friends among all European Countries and from all
over the world. In fact, if a relationship goes well, an
exchange student and their family can be friends of yours for
life !

Purtroppo non abbiamo avuto il tempo di fare
un’inaugurazione ufficiale ma, vista la necessità oggettiva,
il mio primo pensiero è stato quello di renderla fruibile
subito a tutti.
Così è stato, la stiamo utilizzando a pieno regime e siamo
molto soddisfatti del risultato.
Al posto della vecchia e fatiscente struttura di legno
abbiamo creato un parcheggio aggiuntivo e abbiamo
allargato lo spazio gioco. Stiamo inoltre pensando a un
campo di pallavolo e a una struttura aggiuntiva. Siamo
comunque molto contenti perché siamo riusciti a
trasformare il piazzale gioco in uno spazio sicuro e
funzionale per i nostri piccoli allievi.
Molto è stato fatto e molto ancora dovremo fare, ma il mio
pensiero va sempre al benessere dei bambini e questo è la
mia priorità come Direttrice e la prima priorità della Scuola
Europea di Varese.

UCAS applications – how and when to
prepare for your life after the BAC !

Ucas (Universities and Colleges Admissions Services) is the
application service for all UK universities and has been an online
service since 2006. Schools are encouraged to be registered
centres checking and supervising applications in order to avoid
needless mistakes. They provide excellent training and a
comprehensive support system for schools in order to make the
system run smoothly. The system is clearly geared towards UK
qualifications and the European Baccalaureate Diploma is
offered in only 1% of applications.
L’associazione dei genitori mi ha domandato di scrivere un
piccolo articolo per presentarmi a tutti i genitori.
Mi chiamo Monique Maas, dal primo settembre ’13 sono la
Direttrice Aggiunta del ciclo secondario della Scuola Europea di
Varese. Sono olandese, sona sposata e ho due figli di 22 e 20
anni, che non abitano più con noi. Entrambi studiano in
Olanda, uno Economia Aziendale all’università di Rotterdam, e
l’altro studia all’Accademia d’Arte di Utrecht. All’inizio di
agosto io e mio marito ci siamo trasferiti a Varese per abituarci
alla nuova vita. Di me vorrei dirvi che ho studiato Lingue
all’Università di Anversa e dopo Storia e Scienze Europee
all’Università di Amsterdam. Sono stata insegnante di francese
e traduttrice; ho vissuto qualche anno in Africa Occidentale,
dove mio marito lavorava come agronomo mentre io mi
occupavo di traduzioni. Dopo il nostro ritorno in Olanda ho
lavorato come editrice di metodi didattici per l’istruzione
superiore e pre-universitaria. Nel 2000 ho cambiato
professione perché nel frattempo mi ero appassionata
all’istruzione professionale e così ho sviluppato e insegnato
corsi aziendali privati (management e marketing). In seguito ho
lavorato 4 anni come manager in un dipartimento linguistico
presso un istituto d’istruzione alberghiero. Negli ultimi 7 anni
sono stata direttrice di una scuola secondaria professionale per
alunni dai 12 ai 17 anni (alunni con problemi di apprendimento
e comportamento).
Adesso sono molto contenta di essere qui. Alla scuola Europea
vostri ragazzi studiano in un ambiente multilinguistico e
multiculturale, dove possono acquistare non solamente una
conoscenza intellettuale, ma anche raggiungere un equilibrio
personale, conoscendo e sviluppando i propri talenti, interessi
e capacità. Per fornire ottime prestazioni e per scoprire le loro
qualità, penso che sia importantissimo per loro sentirsi
ascoltati e riconosciuti, sia da voi che da noi. I vostri ragazzi
hanno bisogno del vostro così come del nostro sostegno nel
loro processo di sviluppo. Questo esige una stretta
collaborazione tra i professori e i genitori, nonché una fiducia
reciproca. Bisogna continuamente scambiarsi tutte le
informazioni importanti.
La scuola, la facciamo tutti insieme: gli alunni, il corpo docenti,
gli altri colleghi e voi, i genitori.
Conto sulla reciproca collaborazione!
Over the past six years Anglophone careers coordinators from all
the European Schools, with the support of the Department of
Education in London, have made a tremendous effort to have
the Diploma fully recognised in the UK by visiting universities,
meeting to discuss and agree on our method for presenting our
schools, producing a brochure on the European Schools as well
as negotiating with universities on acceptable offers to our
students for specific subjects.
Universities in the UK have become extremely competitive
particularly in the more popular courses and colleges. Due to the
increase in work, it was felt that there should be a contribution
from the students involved, particularly in the larger schools
such as Luxembourg where they can easily have 120 applications
to process.
In Varese, we have between 30-40 applications a year. The
workload is still manageable if the teacher is not on a full
timetable. However, we have been increasingly aware that it is
unwise to have the whole system dependent on one
person. Therefore, we hope to use the funds provided by the
parents to make sure that there is always more than one
teacher who is trained to process applications.
Normal procedure would be that the students have four lessons
after the exams in June where they are introduced to the
system, advised on choosing a course, given some examples of
personal statements and then registered with the school. The
registration would not involve any commitment on the part of
the student to proceed with the application and he would be
free to make his final decision in September.
Clearly, this year there has been some confusion as everything
was very rushed. We apologise for this and would like to confirm
that everything is on track.
The eleven early applications have been processed and the
other 20 plus are being worked on with the help of Gail
Muller. We are expecting to have all applications finished by
mid December.
I would like to emphasise the importance of making a school
application rather than an individual one in order make sure that
our schools are presented in the best way possible. One faulty
application will put the whole system in a bad light and clearly
this will have an effect on other students.
We are always happy to have feedback and suggestions in order
to improve.

Unfortunately we were unable for safety reasons to
organise the "skateboard" course as an extra curriculum
activity on the school premises. However, we do not

Wanted : parents to play music
Now that hopefully the dust of the school start has settled a bit, we wanted to take the liberty to alert you to the string
orchestra "CONCENTUS EUROPAE" (http://www.concentus-europae.wg.vu/). CONCENTUS EUROPAE is a bunch of enthusiastic
string players that meet every Wednesday in Caldana sopra Cocquio-Trevisago for a rehearsal. All parents that have played or
are playing a string instrument (Violin, Viola, Cello, Bass) are most welcome to join CONCENTUS EUROPAE!
The level of proficiency is really secondary - what counts is the fun to get together, play music and improve, as an ensemble,
under the guidance of our Director Daniela De Gaspari (professional music teacher / violinist). This autumn / winter we are
playing music by Sibelius, Grieg, Delibes, Tchaikovsky, Rimsky-Korsakov, Rutter, Delius and Bridge. If you are interested, please

Lithuania's presidency of the EU
At school our children saw Lithuanian dance, music and game performance in July.
We would now like to invite everybody with the families, from primary to
secondary school to see the performance by Saule Kilaite., a Lithuanian violenist
who has collaborated with Andrea Bocelli, Michael Bublè, Eros Ramazzotti, Laura
Pausini, Gianna Nannini, Cesare Cremonini, and other famous musicians.
It's a live concert "Andando, Vivendo" with music, dance, colours, lights, poetry,
high tech video projections and more which will take you across the globe in
various countries. Cooncerts will take place on the following dates:
13 Dicember 2013 – Teatro dei Capuccini, Lecco
18 Dicember 2013 – Teatro Giuditta Pasta, Saronno
