After obtaining his degree in 1978 he completed his PhD in Numerical Analysis
at Trinity College in 1980 with a work on numerical methods for problems with
boundary layers that was eventually published as a book. He then worked in the
Mathematical Software group of Philips Research giving several notable
contributions to the field of numerical simulation of electronic circuits, and
collaborated to the development of mixed finite elements for semiconductor devices. In 2006 he moved to NXP Semiconductors where he continued his
research for the electronics industry until 2010. In the meantime he was appointed
as Professor in Scientific Computing for Industry at Eindhoven University of
Technology, where he has supervised the activity of numerous MsC and PhD

Chairperson: Edie Miglio
He started working at IBM in 1980 as a simple maintenance technician. Yet, during
his professional career he reached positions of increasing responsibility and in
June 2004 was appointed Chairman and CEO of IBM Italy. In October 2007, he left
this position to accept a new challenge alongside Giampaolo Dallara at the head
