artistico nel panorama attuale delle forme di arte.
Laddove la net art ha contribuito a sviluppare un intricato linguaggio che presuppone non

solo l’interraz ione del pubblico internauta, numerosi artisti hanno impiegato il mez z o
informatico e il web come supporto per far circolare le loro opere.
In questa nuova frontiera, sono state sfruttate innumerevoli possibilità del web: quelle della
diffusione mail per far circolare progetti artistici, i musei virtuali di Second life, la
creaz ione stessa di un’opera tramite l’apporto dei naviganti, come ad esempio il libro-blog
“127 mila bocconi d’arte” degli Elastic Group of artistic research che sarà a breve
pubblicato.
Ma la contemporaneità, la sincronicità, l’immediatez z a del web e la sua incontrollata
condivisione è anche un supporto ottimale per opere di denuncia, per la creatività
citaz ionista come anche per nuove forme di guerriglia advertising. Per questo, incentrare
nuovi interessi sugli avvenimenti artistici nel web diviene sempre più un’esigenz a: la
tendenz a si sta sempre più diffondendo, non solo come vetrina promoz ionale, ma come
elemento fondante e significante di veri e propri percorsi di numerosi progetti artistici.

Una premessa con la quale presentare le opere di due artiste che ci hanno invitato a
riflettere sulla fragilità della nostra terra e delle nostre relaz ioni umane: “Journey to
fragility” di Maria Rebecca Ballestra e “Fragile” di Alessia Babrow.

“Journey into Fragility” dell’artista e fotografa Maria Rebecca Ballestra nasce nel 2011 e
propone una ricerca che si basa su dodici punti elencati nella “Carta per la Terra e per
l’Uomo”, concepita dal poeta e saggista Massimo Morasso. Il “Manifesto Arenz ano per
la Terra e l’Essere Umano” è stato sottoscritto da intellettuali di tutto il mondo, tra cui
cinque premi Nobel e sei premi Pulitz er: da Derek Walcott a Séamus Heaney, da Bei
Dao a Mario Luzi, da Yves Bonnefoy ad Andrea Zanzotto e John Ashbery .
Nelle varie tappe del suo progetto itinerante, durato una anno, la Ballestra ha rintracciato
percorsi di resistenz a, nuclei di forz a e nuove forme di intelligenz a ecologica. Un totale di
dodici progetti (tra i quali installaz ioni, video, community projects e interventi site specific)
eseguiti in altrettanti paesi del mondo (come Galles, Ghana, Sviz z era, Madagascar, Abu
Dhabi, Cina, Singapore e Costa Rica), con lo scopo di offrire un dialogo attivo
sull’ambiente e sul valore della vita sulla Terra.
La dodicesima e ultima tappa di Journey to fragility, si è svolta in Galles, dove l’artista ha
dedicato un lavoro sugli eco-villaggi e sull’agricoltura sostenibile.
Dal canto suo invece, la giovane performer Alessia Babrow ha dato vita al progetto
“Fragile” nel 2009. Anche questo ideato in più tappe, graz ie al supporto del web e al
termine del quale seguirà un evento performativo con un’installaz ione-ambiente.
L’artista propone la pubblicaz ione mensile di una fotografia in un blog e sui social network
con un profilo facebook per attivare una “rete sociale”. In queste opere fotografiche di
denuncia la Babrow sottolinea l’idea che oggigiorno tutto è diventato fragile: l’energia,

denuncia la Babrow sottolinea l’idea che oggigiorno tutto è diventato fragile: l’energia,
l’arte, l’acqua, il cibo, il consumismo stesso, l’abbigliamento, il territorio, il paesaggio, la
natura come il clima, ma anche la comunicaz ione perché fa si che siamo diventati merce
di tutto e di tutti. FRAGILE diviene un marchio con il quale obliterare tutto ciò che nella
nostra società è “Fragile”, assumendone consapevolez z a.
Un lavoro incentrato su tematiche di attualità con il quale denunciare l’immobilità del
pensiero. Per il mese di giugno, l’artista ha diffuso l’opera “Time/life” che ha dedicato alla
protesta in Turchia, scaturita dalla difesa di un parco.

L’ottava tappa del progetto Journey into Fragility si è appena conclusa in Galles – dopo Ghana,
Sviz z era, Madagascar, Abu Dhabi, Cina, Singapore e Costa Rica, ed è stata curata da Sara Rees.
Ispirandomi alla dodicesima tesi della Carta per la Terra e per l’Uomo: la salvaguardia dei propri tratti
singolari, se concepita nei termini di differenzialità e dialogo con l’altro, conduce a un effettivo
pluralismo, molto più dell’utopia universalistica e generalizzante su cui di è edificata la modernità, di
Massimo Morasso, ho affrontato il tema dell’agricoltura sostenibile e delle nuove filosofie di ecoliving.
Il soggiorno in Galles, è stato possibile graz ie al Programma di Residenz a d’Artista Rhod 2013, che
ha sostenuto e selez ionata il progetto Journey into Fragility. Rhod è un progetto gestito da un
collettivo d’artisti con la finalità di esplorare e promuovere il dialogo tra dimensione urbana e rurale.
Durante le tre settimane di residenz a ho avuto l’opportunità di vistare alcuni eco- villaggi tra cui
Lammas, progetto pionieristico che propone un modello alternativo di vita rurale, invitando le
persone a esplorare che cosa significhi vivere con un basso impatto ambientale. Il progetto ruota
attorno all’eco- villaggio in Tir y Gafel, in Nord Pembrokeshire, che è stato progettato combinando il

Numerose e di grande interesse sono state le visite ad az iende biologiche, come Troed y Rhiw
Organi, Dyfed Permaculture Farm Trust o Penyrallt Home Farm, così come il progetto di Forest
Gardening portato avanti da Nature Wise. Un graz ie particolare a tutte le persone meravigliose che
ho incontrato, che mi hanno ospitato nelle loro case, e che con le loro riflessioni, nonché con le loro
scelte di cambiamento, hanno contribuito alla riuscita e all’arricchimento di una nuova tappa di
Journey into Fragility.

Wales, a new form of eco-living
Journey into Fragility: Eighth Step.

The project's eighth stage, curated by Sara Rees, was recently completed in Wales - after Ghana,
Switz erland, Madagascar, Abu Dhabi, China, Singapore and Costa Rica. It was inspired by the
Arenzano Manifesto ’s twelfth thesis: Preserving everyone’s defining features, if to respect differences
and promote dialogue, leads to an effective pluralism, much more than the universalistic utopia and the
rough generalization on which modernity had its foundations set , and it was focus on sustainable
agriculture and new form of eco- living.
The stay in Wales was realiz ed thanks to the support of the Artist Residence Program Rhod 2013,
that has selected and supported Journey into Fragility. Rhôd is an artist- run project exploring and
promoting urban- rural dialogue. During the three weeks of residences I had the opportunity to visit
few eco- villages like Lammas a project created to pioneer an alternative model of living on the land.
It empowers people to explore what it is to live in a low- impact lifestyle. The project centres around
the eco- village at Tir y Gafel, in north Pembrokeshire. It combines the traditional small holding model
with the latest innovations in environmental design, green technology and permaculture.

Also very interesting is the community project Brithdir Mawr and the round wood house. I had also the
opportunity to visit some very innovative organic farm, like Troed y Rhiw Organic, Dyfed
Permaculture Farm Trust and Penyrallt Home Farm, or the gardening project created and developed
by Nature Wise. A special thanks to all the wonderful people I met, who hosted me in their houses,
and that with their reflections and their choices of changes have contributed to the success and
enrichment of this step of Journey into Fragility.

year's
exhibition, Future
Nature
Culture, explores our relationship to the
natural world and how we respond to the challenges we f ace now and in the
f uture in terms of climate change and adapting to sustainable ways of living.
T his year Rhôd is delighted to welcome Italian artist Maria Rebecca
Ballestra as the project's f irst artist-in-residence.
In this talk Rhôd 2013's curator Sara Rees will talk about the ideas behind
Future Nature Culture and about the work of this year's exhibiting artists.
Rhôd's Artist-in-Residence Maria Rebecca Ballestra will talk about her
f ascinating 2 year-long project Journey Into Fragility, in which she utilizes art
as a space f or dialogue between science, ecology, politics, biotechnology
and sustainable development. Comprising of 12 projects - f rom Ghana to Abu
Dabi, Switzerland to Singapore - Journey into Fragility seeks to explore how
dif f erent cultures constructively respond to globalization and climate change.
T he project highlights our essential dilemma: how can politics be modif ied in
order to preserve the human species and the earth?

Rhôd’s fifth annual exhibition invites artists and audiences to consider the future of the relationship between nature and culture. Describing
the theme of this year’s exhibition, Curator Sara Rees says:
“Fut ure Nat ure Cult ure addresses the critical need for us to respond to the challenges we face as a result of the impact of human

beings upon the natural world. The demands of over- population and a globaliz ed market economy have resulted in damage to ecosystems, diminishing biodiversity, the depletion of natural resources and climate change. This exhibition invites artists and audiences to
respond to this context, to re- interpret and re- imagine the relationship between nature and culture, beyond exploitation and idealiz ation,
towards a future in which we acknowledge ourselves as not separate from, but an intrinsic part of, nature, and the responsibility this
implies.”
The selected artists all have practices that resonate strongly with the exhibition’s theme, using a diverse range of creative and
conceptual strategies.
Maria Rebecca Ballest ra: Art ist - in- Residence
Ballestra’s works often arise as a response to a specific site and context, using the space that welcomes them to enhance their
communicative and emotional aspects, and are inspired by complex contemporary concerns such as the commerce of the body and the
consumption of natural resources. Her most recent body of work, Journey Into Fragility is oriented toward the perception of the future in
relation to climate change and explores multiple human interventions in the natural world.
St ef han Caddick
Stefhan Caddick is interested in the savagery of the natural world, misremembered episodes from political history, the three- minute
single and not knowing the way. Making work at once darkly melancholic and blackly comedic, Caddick’s approach to the process of
making often sees him inventing ornate, ridiculous systems or methodologies.
Rawley Clay
At Coed Hills Rural Artspace, Rawley Clay has evolved art and craft practices alongside spirituality, and practical enquiries into low
impact community living and future land use, forming together a holisitic ‘Art of Living’. Through his fascination of aesthetics and the Gaia
concept, Clay’s artwork explores social frameworks and interactions with this extraordinary, boundless, on- the- edge world in which we all
live.
Helen Clifford
Place and space are defining aspects of Helen Clifford’s practice, which is engaged with the geography, history and social landscape of
a site. Predominantly installation and temporary in nature, Clifford is interested in the areas where culture and nature collide and overlap.
