Summary of Scientific Research
1974–1977
Following the B.Sc. degree at Technion on ‘‘Elementary
Particle Symmetry” (SU(6) under Prof. M. Gronau)
the subject of studies turned towards cosmology, namely Homogeneous Cosmological Models (thesis under Prof. F. Occhionero and Prof. R. Ruffini). The thesis had inferred an
upper bound on allowable primordial cosmic magnetic field
B , compatible with primordial nucleosynthesis. It has also
been proved that the (Kantowsky and Sachs) cosmological
model with magnetic field is unstable and cannot avoid the
cosmological singularity. First collaboration with Landau
Institute, Profess. Valodia Belinsky and M. Khalatnikov.
1978–1980
Following the new inverse scattering technique by ShabbatZacharov-Belinskii, the first inhomogeneous cosmological solutions of Einstein equations corresponding
to earliest cosmological gravitational wave propagation in early homogeneous universe, Bianchi I, were
obtained ,[ Pub A.1,2,3].
It should be mentioned that in the same years the candidate
considered the white light development in Holography either
in a pedagogical field (with prof. M. Laeng, Pedagogy); in
a public cultural meeting (First Exhibition of Holography in
Rome “Museo del Folklore 1979”) . The effort in pedagogical
field moved in Brazil to organize the first Holography exhibition at “Biennal of San Paolo” (1980)[Pub C:3,10,14,15,16,17].
From that activity D. Fargion has been named director of
the Holography Center where meetings and laboratory experiments have been developed. In the same years many
scientific consultants in the Television program “Quark” led
by Piero Angela (1980) and Italian translation of the book
on holography (by Yu Ostrosky), edited in 1982 by MIR
(URSS).[Pub.Translation 1].
1980- 2002
Activity on elementary Particle-Cosmology connection, namely
on:
1.Massive neutrinos in cosmology and astrophysics
(1980–1983). In particular, it has been noted that the
deflection of ultrarelativistic neutrino differ from massless ones [A4]; moreover for the first time it has been
noted that the delay between the gravitational
wave burst and the neutrino burst from supernova event is detectable and may lead to measure
(or infer a bound on) the neutrino mass,[A5].
Moreover, the relativistic need of a right-handed neutrino νR , its suppressed interaction (and earlier decoupling) with other particles, lead to the presence, after
big bang, of two neutrino thermal populations:
a “colder” (νR ) one whose clustering might be
responsible of earliest galactic formation (whose
relics might be far QSRs at z ≥ 1) and a “warmer”
(νL ) population whose later clustering may reflect
a second epoch (recent) of galaxy formation[ A6],
. The detailed interaction and decoupling of νR have
been studied with Prof. R. Konoplich (MEPI, Moscow)
and F. Antonelli (Rome University)[A7,C8]. Bounds on
Curriculum Vitae of Daniele Fargion
10
neutral relics has been derived by the known loss of
angular momentum in Binary Systems.[A8].
2.Gravitational Instability of Multi Fluid and Galaxy
Formation (1981–1983): Following the gravitational
instability by Bonnor-Grishuk-Zeldovich, D. Fargion proved
that the expanding Universe with non collision multi
fluid (at different temperatures as νL , νR or just primordial He4 , H) lead to non-coeval galaxy formation
[A11]. Similar results have been confirmed and reviewed
by later articles mainly by a Landau theoretical group
led by Prof. Starobinsky.
General Review articles on massive neutrino in cosmology with Prof. R. Mignani have been published [A9]. A
continued analysis of cosmological constraints and experimental data allowed to M. Shepkin and D. Fargion
to exclude (at high level of accuracy) the hypothetical Majorona mass nature for neutrino with
important consequences for high energy physics
[A13].
3.Magnetic Monopole (by GUT): D. Fargion has shown
that the allowed number density is nearly suppressed (even 6 order of magnitude below the
Parker bound) in any cosmological model with
coherent magnetic fields because of the suppression
of the same magnetic field and its same versus and coherence[A10, C5,C13].
4.Neutral mirror leptons: in collaboration with Prof.
M. Ross CERN - Helsinky University, by astroparticle arguments it has been excluded a wide
range of masses for the second unstable mirror
neutrino; the authors also described the hypothetical
mirror neutrino tracks in secondary cosmic rays [A.14].
5.Photon with mass (following the non-unified theories
SU(3)×SU(2)×U(1)×U(1) of Okun 1982, Glashow 1983):
Even for a tiny photon mass, compatible with astrophysical and cosmological bounds , we considered the
gravitational clustering of those bosons into “bose star”
whose dimensions are (by chance?) corresponding to
those of quasars. Such hypothetical objects may occur
only within an inflationary cosmological scenario ruled
by the non relativistic degenerated photon Bose Condensate [A12].
6.Neutral Non Collisional Particles in Cosmology:
a)It has been considered that role of a massive sneutrino (by supersymmetric theories), namely sneutrino τ, ν̃τ , in clustering in mini bosonic stars.[D8].
b)Monopole, photino, gravitinos, mirror neutral leptons in binary system. It has been inferred bounds
on their allowed number density in galactic halo
from the study of their influence (drag) in well-known
binary system, in competition with other angular
momentum losses (as gravitational radiation). In
particular, from the data of PSR 1913+16 we excluded the hypothetical number density of monopole
related to first evidence found by Cabrera [C12].

7.The Gravitational Synchrotron Radiation:
a)In collaboration with P.G. Diambrini, it has been
shown that Lep. I, Lep II are the largest source
of gravitational waves on earth but their detectability is non realistic at the present stages in terrestrial
laboratories.[A15]
b)The possible photon-graviton conversion, in strong
magnetic field on future has been shown to be able
to lead to largest source of gravitational waves at
the edge of future detectors. In the astrophysical
and cosmological framework, it has been shown the
observable consequences and the possible detection
of this peculiar and fundamental phenomena: a first
“radio bang” due to the gravitational waves conversion in earth (or Jovian ) magnetic field in coincidence with supernova galactic neutrino burst.[A19]
c)Gravitons by lights. The coherent “beating” on
bunches of laser lights in fiber optics may become
source of focusing gravitational waves. Their powers
and observational have been considered.[A19, C27,C28]
d)Electro-magnetic radiation by ultra-relativistic free
fall charge. It has been shown that the ideal detection of gravitational Bremsstrahlung radiation by
ultra-relativistic (screened) bunch in free fall at Lep
or LHC may be detectable and its signature may
prove the spin 2 nature of the quantum of gravity.
8.Muon and Tau neutrino appearance from Solar Flares: the
September 1989 exceptional solar flare was the source
of high energy (tens MeV) neutrinos from terrestrial
secondary cosmic rays and from secondary pion relics
produced in the solar atmosphere. Their detectability,
nearly within Kamiokaude II sensibility, has been analyzed [A17,D14].
Primary and Secondary Neutrinos from Solar Flares:
Very recently the same role of Solar Flare Neutrinos has
been extended to the oscillation frame. It has been noted
that the GeV neutrinos by pion decay in prompt solar
flare on sun may lead to muon and even tau appearence
in time correlation of the flare itself. The predicted
spectra and the flavour mixing have been studied in
details. This topic has been reviewed in a recent D.Fargion Anti-Neutrino Imprint in Solar
Neutrino Flare in astro-ph/0606226;Phys.Scripta
T127 (2006) 22-24 . The paper became soon a
well known article.
The role of the Fourth Heavy Neutrino Family in the DAMA
signals and in the GeV Galactic Gamma Halo
9.The role of hypothetical neutrino anomalous magnetic
moment and its interference with Gauge neutral boson
has been considered (with R. Konoplich and R. Mignani)
astrophysical and cosmological framework, in particular
for a fourth heavy lepton family. In particular in recent
years we stressed the role both of Heavy Neutrino as
well as the possible presence of relic Quark frozen in
anomalous heavy Hadrons.
Curriculum Vitae of Daniele Fargion
12
10.Astroparticle bounds:
a)Bounds on fourth neutrino family. In collaboration with R. Konoplich, M. Khlopov and R. Mignani,
it has been found that the heavy neutrino relic clustering in galactic halos and annihilations lead to
a cosmic ray pollution not always compatible with
observations. First consequent bounds on their allowed masses were inferred [A21,25,27].
b)Bounds on ντ with large anomalous magnetic moment (“Guidice”). From the annihilation of those
hypothetical neutrinos in galactic halo, it has been
found (in collaboration with M. Khlopov, R. Konoplich and R. Mignani)[A24], that this well-known
cold-dark matter candidate is forbidden (for any allowable neutrino tau mass) by constrains on electron
pairs , gamma, radio-waves data in our galaxy.
c)The eventual signature of neutrino heavy pair annihilations of fourth generation at TeV masses annihilation in galactic halo and consequent signal in
Km3 volume neutrino detector has been predicted
(with R. Konoplich and R. Mignani)[A27] . Also
the role of UHE neutrino tau in Km3 detectors has
been noticed[A27].
d)The eventual signature of a ν anomalous magnetic
moment for a fourth lepton generation in near future
accelerator experiment has been considered (with
R. Konoplich and R. Mignani).[A 27]
e)With M.Khlopov, R.Konoplich, R.Mignani
and Wu.
Golubkov we considered the possibility that
the DAMA signals are compatible with a heavy
neutrino relic at a mass nearly half the gauge
neutral boson, in galactic halo. In particular we
considered the relic cascades in cosmic rays, mainly
photons, electron pairs and the constrains on heavy
neutrino masses . [A60-13].//
f)With M.Khlopov,R.Konoplich,M.Grossi we explained
the extended gamma halo at GeV as the relic annihilations of the heavy neutrino at the same mass
compatible with DAMA underground signals.[A41]
The role of Heavy Neutrino family in Higgs detection in the lightest cases has been analyzed in most
recent paper showing that the role of 60 − 70GeV
neutrinos is to lead to significant un-visible Higgs
decay mode.
g)We estimate (with Prof. M.Khlopov, B.Mele,
R.Konoplich, M.De Santis, P.G.L.De Sanctis) the role of Tau Air Air Showers from the
Earth at Horizons. This tau horizontal showers
may be a windows of Neutrino Astronomy observable from the top of a mountain or from balloons
and satellites (Fargion et all.2004).
11.Inverse Compton Scattering and Gamma Ray Burst (GRBs)
and Soft Gamma Repeaters SGRs:
Curriculum Vitae of Daniele Fargion
13
a)It has been proved for the first time[A21] in collaboration with A. Salis by analytical (and numerical)
solutions, the exact spectra for the Inverse Compton Scattering (ICS) onto black body radiation: the
spectra fits accurately the data found by Giordano
Diambrini Palazzi group at Lep (bunch + thermal
room b.b.r)(1990-1992) with high accuracy[A29].
b)Gamma Ray Burst and Soft Gamma Repeaters by Precessing Gamma Jets, induced by electron pair Jets:
Moreover, the ICS processes have been considered,
for the first time, to explain the GRB (gamma ray
burst) puzzle in the framework of a beamed precessing gamma jet blazing towards the observer. The
source of the gamma jet is related to the ICS scattering of electrons pairs jets (from compact sources like
neutron star or black holes) on to nearby luminous
companion lights [A20,A22,B50,A30,A31,B31].The
spectra, the time evolution and most known behaviour of GRBs as well as SGRs agree with the
precessing jets model as well as the puzzling presence of painted rings (in nebulae, or supernova remnants), relic of such precessing jets[A86,A42].After
a decade of Fireball Model (isotropic) Burst popular
model, after the GRB390123 ultra-energetic event it
becomes more and more evident that our Jet model
blazing model is the very probable correct one.[C46,C43,C39].
12.Gravitational Shapiro Phase Shift to discover Dark Matter:
In collaboration with R. Conversano it has been emphasized the key role of the Shapiro phase shift (competitive
to gravitational lenses) on pulsar period shift due to
the MACHO crossing on the observation line of sight.
This phenomena has been considered in detail and the
number of observed events of such Shapiro phase delay
is consistent with the few known “negative” pulsar period in known PSR catalogs. A peculiar Shapiro phase
shift occurs also for pulsars in motion inside globular
clusters.[A26,A36]
13.Quantum Mach Effect :
A Quantum Mach effect of gyroscope nature has been
considered with A. Aiello and L. Chiatti, in rf. SQUID.
Possible detection of a signal analogous to the Sagnac
one, due to the Cooper pairs, has been predicted quantitatively.[A43]
14.Miscellaneous : Astrophysical consequences on Earth Life
It has been considered the recent danger of meteoric
trajectories in toward Earth. It has been proposed to
avoid the impact by exploding at earliest time , by nuclear weapons, a small part of the body , propelling the
main one and deviating its original destination.[A35].
The asteroid deflection, as incoming asteroid 99942
Apophis, has been reviewed in a recent paper (Fargion
2007) where the main solution is an array of ”screw”
engines powered by nuclear energy, able to dig and
eject the asteroid soil, to deflect its trajectory. The
Curriculum Vitae of Daniele Fargion
14
subject found wide international attention (See New
Scientist 2007).
With A.Dar (1998-2000) it has been studied the role of
tidal forces of nearby mini planets encounter with Earth.
It has been shown that some life extinction might be
related to such catastrophic events.[A34].
15.Bounds on Antimatter by the absence of mini-anti-asteroids
In collaboration with Prof. M. Khlopov it has been
shown [A55] that the possible existence of rare regions
of space where marginal local CPT violations are leading to anti-stars,anti-planets and anti-meteorites are
severely bounded (at ratio 10−8 −−10−9 over matter) by the absence on Moon, Earth, Jovian and Solar
surfaces , of any anti-meteorite annihilation; indeed such
possible annihilation signature, energy fluence, timing in
X,gamma would not escape present satellite net searching for Gamma Ray Burst.
16.Ultra High Energy Neutrino Astrophysics:
a) Ultra high energy neutrinos and light relic neutrinos in the galactic halo: solving the GZK puzzle
With A.Salis first and with B.Mele, later, it has
been found for the first time a way to overcome the
GZK cut-off for UHECR at 100 EeV: the primary
UHE neutrinos may interact with relic ones with
light mass in the galactic or local halo, leading to
Z , WW showering and to the observed UHECR
on Earth. The mechanism has been reconsidered by many authors and it is label ”Zburst” or ”ZeV neutrino-neutrino” scattering to
overcome GZK. It has been widely considered as
one of the most realistic and conventional solution of
the UHECR puzzle based only on known relic light
neutrino mass in dark halos[C35,A33,C37,C41,C45].
The same result has been reported three weeks later
by T. Weiler and it is presently refereed as the Zpeak or ZeV solution of UHECR puzzle. Our ApJ
paper became presently a high cited paper,
above three hundred references in GOOGLE
Scholar.
b)Ultra high energy neutrinos and light relic neutrinos in
dark halo to solve the GZK and the Infrared-TeV cutoffs
In collaboration with students De Sanctis Lucentini and Dr. M.Grossi we proposed the solution to
UHECR and TeV cut-offs by considering the UHECR
Z showering in Dark Halo in all channels. In particular we proposed that the EeV electrons secondaries
of Z decays pions will shower into TeVs (as well
as GeVs) energy band by synchrotron radiation in
galactic and extra-galactic magnetic fields. This
solution presented for the first time in ICRC 2001
(A53) maybe a key contribute in UHE astrophysics.
Curriculum Vitae of Daniele Fargion
15
The role of UHE neutrino- relic neutrino masses is
subject of papers showing the shadows of neutrino
mass at UHECR edges (B45,A54).
c)Ultra High Energy Neutrino Tau and Tau Airshower:
The relevance of this subject maybe summirized by the very recent Ph.Rev.Letters. by
AUGER collaboration, signed by more than
500 authors (and price Nobels): ”Upper Limits on The diffuse Flux of Ultrahigh Tau Neutrinos from Pierre Auger Observatory” PRL,
100,211101 (2008). The first theoretical reference on this subject is (ref.14) D.Fargion,
ApJ.570,909 (2002). Indeed:
Important consequences of UHE neutrinos Tau interactions has been for the first time noted by us;
Ultra-relativistic tau may be easily detectable above
hundred PeVs energies by their longer tracks in Underground detectors . In particular new UHE detector of neutrinos based on the unique tau penetration
and its decay in flight to Tau air showers have been
for the first time considered. Its signal may be
observed in front of mountain chains or in Upward
Air-showers . Rare signature of these events may be
already recorded in Gamma Flashes upcoming from
our Earth toward Gamma Ray Observatory (GRO)
detector (BATSE). [A 32,C 40, C42,C34].The Role
of Upward Tau Air-showers became recently a leading idea in the UHE neutrino field. Moreover it has
been estimated (A45)(A57)(A58)(A60):
a) the target mass of the calorimeter in front of a
chain mountain either for UHE ντ , ν¯τ at wide range
of energies as well for ν¯e at Glashow resonant energy
(6.3P eV ).
a) the analytical formula expressing the total Earth
Mass Target (Disk Crust) observable by satellite either for Upward Tau Air Shower (near PeVs energies
of primary ν). b) the more complex analytical Mass
in Crown Earth Crust Mass at Horizons , for any
altitude, at higher UHE ντ , ν¯τ regions (EeV/GZK
energies).
The proposal for a Tau Shower Detector at Hawaii
has been very recently approved (ASHRA) and it is
going (2004) to be able to monitor Cherenkov and
Photo-Luminescent Horizontal Air-Showers following our detailed proposal (Hawaii Conference 2002).
d)Horizontal Neutrino Astronomy versus the Earth Shadow
to High Energy Cosmic Rays:
Since 2000 I proposed the use of the Earth at Horizons as a Calorimeter for both UHECR (filtered
by column depth) and for both Glashow peak antineutrino interactions in atmosphere, as well as for
Tau induced up-going Air-Showers. The idea is wide
spread in a sequence of articles in 2002-2005 and
Curriculum Vitae of Daniele Fargion
16
they are widely referred. The paper in ApJ 2004
(Fargion et. all 2004) is summirizing this activity
to be better followed by recent paper list.See also
Fargion et all 2006-8.
e)Horizontal Spectroscopy of High Energy Cosmic Rays:
It has been shown that the use of the deep atmosphere as a filter of UHECR may offer a new way to
classify and analize UHECR arrival angle, shower
geo-magnetic splitting, composition.(Fargion 2005,
Fargion et all 2006,Fargion et all 2007) The use of
such Horizontal Hadronic Showers may teach the
needed physics for more rare upgoing Tau Air-showers
at PeV-EeV energy.
g)Tera Leptons and Quarks in 4th new family:
Within a sequence of articles on the 4th family heavy
Neutrino with M.Khlopov and collaborators we investigated the hidden Higgs decay in LHC . (Phys
Rev D 2004) Other consequences of Heavy Helium
like hadrons are studied in recent papers (2004-2006)
g)SOLVING AUGER UHECR puzzles by Light Nuclei? The Cen A imprint.:
It has been argued that the recent (Nov. 2007)
discover of UHECR anisotropy is not due to Super
Galactic Plane sources but it is due mostly to nearest Cen-A source mainly ejecting Lightest Nuclei,
(He,Be). Cen-A lay near galactic plane and Super
Galactic Plane. The UHECR peculiar deflections
orthogonally to galactic plane by spiral magnetic
fields are spread into vertical directions, by chance
correlated to Super-Galactic Plane. This model fits
the UHECR AUGER discovered composition favoring heavy nuclei and it may be soon be confirmed
by additional AUGER data clustering, we believe,
to Cen-A.(in press in Physica Scripta 2008).
g)Tau air showers detectability with GLAST:
we have estimated the rate for UHECR hadron skimming the atmosphere and Tau air-showering, originated by UHE neutrinos inside the Earth and decaying into space. we have shown that the signal
maybe revealed in a few years. Moreover we have
shown that GLAST must reveal UHE muons secondaries and UHE neutrons at TeV energy range.
