FIBRE DI CARBONIO
Il carbonio: se ne fa un gran parlare, ma forse è il caso di saperne qualcosa di più. Il materiale che ha segnato una svolta nel modo di costruire biciclette (e
di pedalare) ha portato con sé anche una vera e propria rivoluzione tecnologica, tuttora in divenire.
Va specificato, innanzitutto, che “carbonio” può voler dire molte cose. Le proprietà meccaniche di una fibra di carbonio variano a seconda dei seguenti
parametri:
- Modulo di Young (anche chiamato modulo elastico); si misura in MPa (N/mm2) e corrisponde alla rigidità della fibra in tensione;
- Resistenza alla redtura in tensione (in MPa): indica il grado di resistenza della fibra sottoposta a tensione;
- Allungamento a redtura (in %): corrisponde all’allungamento che può sopportare la fibra prima di cedere.
In sintesi, più il modulo di una fibra è di valore elevato, più è rigida. Per contro, l’aumento del modulo corrisponde a una diminuzione della resistenza alla
redtura e dell’allungamento a redtura.
Per definire i vari tipi di carbonio si parla generalmente di K1, K3, K6, K12: ma che cosa stanno a significare queste sigle? Nient’altro che il numero di filamenti (tecnicamente “filamenti elementari”) che compongono una singola fibra, espressi in migliaia. Dunque il carbonio K1 è formato da mille filamenti per
fibra, mentre il K6 ne contiene seimila. Questo numero fa la differenza solo nei tessuti di carbonio, cioè negli intrecci di fibre. Infatti l’intersezione fra le fibre
è il punto del composito in cui viene assorbita una quantità maggiore di resina. Più il punto di incrocio è spesso e maggiore è la resina che vi si deposita,
determinando un aumento di peso e una minore compattezza del composito.
Il numero di filamenti per fibra non interferisce invece nella qualità del carbonio unidirezionale (UD), quello che utilizziamo per costruire tutti i nostri telai.
Nel carbonio unidirezionale tutte le fibre sono orientate nella stessa direzione. I fili di materia organica inseriti perpendicolarmente servono solo a collegare
le fibre tra loro. Si tratta del tessuto dalle proprietà più elevate. Per lo strato esterno utilizziamo il PLAIN: le fibre sono disposte lungo due direzioni, generalmente 0°/90°, ma anche +45°/-45°. Il filo passa una volta sotto, una volta sopra l’altro filo a lui perpendicolare. Questo tipo di tessuto migliora l’effetto
estetico ma risulta difficile da manipolare a causa della densità degli incroci. SPECIAL WEAVE è il nome del tessuto speciale che usiamo come strato esterno
nel telaio di Cento1 Superleggera. Le fibre sono orientate non in due direzioni, bensì nelle tre dimensioni. Al contrario dei rivestimenti di tipo tradizionale,
Special Weave permette un notevole aumento delle proprietà meccaniche, come la rigidità e la resistenza all’urto.
Carbon fiber
There is so much buzz about carbon fiber. If you are like most cyclists, you want to better understand why it has become the ultimate standard in bicycle materials
composition, construction and manufacturing.
“Carbon”, of course, can refer to many different things, and the structural properties of carbon fiber can vary depending on the following parameters:
-Young’s modulus (also and incorrectly known as the elastic modulus) is the measure of a material’s stiffness under stress.
-Tensile strength is the amount of longitudinal stress a material can bear before breaking apart.
-Elongation to failure is a measure of how much a material will stretch before failure/breaking.
The higher the modulus, the stiffer the carbon, but the lower its tensile strength and elongation to failure (i.e. the more brittle and less elastic it will be). The goal
with every frame and fork we develop is to determine, test and implement the best combination of raw carbon fiber materials for a magic balance of characteristics – so that you get the perfect ride.
To differentiate between the various types of carbon, the industry refers to them as K1, K3, K6, K12, etc., (with “K” serving as the abbreviation for 1,000) signifying
how many thousands of filaments comprise a single carbon fiber/thread/yarn. For example, a K1 carbon fiber is comprised of one thousand filaments, while a K6
fiber is comprised of six thousand filaments. These are the specifications of the raw fibers themselves.
Superior manufacturing comes into play when the fibers are joined together by aerospace-grade epoxy resins. The closer the fibers are laid, woven and compacted together, the greater the resulting composite material’s integrity and strength. And the lighter it will be! The number of filaments per fiber, however, does not
necessarily have an effect on the quality of unidirectional (UD) carbon fiber, the most advanced and best suited to frame construction. We implement UD carbon in
the construction of all Wilier Triestina carbon frames. As the name suggests, the fibers in UD carbon fiber are oriented in the same direction.
For our external layers we utilize plain weaves, with fibers oriented at 0° and 90°, as well as at 45° and -45°. It is a demanding process because of the density of the
layup, but provides a nice aesthetic.

Il materiale che comunemente chiamiamo “carbonio” è in realtà un composito di fibre di carbonio e resina epossidica. La resina fa da collante fra le fibre e le predegge
dalle aggressioni chimiche, meccaniche e climatiche, ma svolge anche un’importante funzione strutturale. Un carbonio di alta qualità serve a poco se la resina non possiede
proprietà meccaniche altrettanto elevate, tali da ridurre al minimo il rischio di redture. Per ottenere questo risultato siamo intervenuti sul composito inserendo nella resina
epossidica nanoparticelle di Ossido di Zinco (ZnO). Si tratta di corpuscoli infinitesimali di forma sferica e di bassissima densità. Il loro effetto è sorprendente: aumentano la
compattezza del composito, migliorando sensibilmente la resistenza all’urto della struttura.
What we commonly refer to as “carbon” is actually a composite of fibers and epoxy resin. The resin’s function is to join and bond the fibers, as well as predect the
overall structure from external forces. In order to avoid potential points of weakness that could result from micro-gaps in a composite layup, we’ve implemented
an ultra low density nanoparticle Zinc Oxide (“ZnO”) resin. This results in a stronger composite with higher resistance to impact while enabling us to reduce
the weight of our frames due to its superior structural integrity. What this means out on the road is improved durability and amazingly responsive handling – the
hallmark of our frames.
La tradizionale tecnica di fabbricazione di un telaio monoscocca in carbonio è quella del cosiddetto “sacchetto sotto pressione”. Questo metodo ha un inconveniente:
non consente di ottenere una ripartizione uniforme dell’aria all’interno dell’involucro. Ne derivano spessori di carbonio non omogenei, difetti nella superficie interna e, in
definitiva, una diminuzione delle proprietà meccaniche, che si traduce in una limitata resistenza della struttura nel tempo. Con Cento1 Superleggera abbiamo perfezionato
la tecnica costruttiva LIT (Large Inflatable Tube): le fibre di carbonio preimpregnate vengono compattate in modo più uniforme contro le pareti dello stampo, eliminando gli
accumuli di resina, rendendo lisce le superfici interne e assolutamente regolari gli spessori. I vantaggi dal punto di vista meccanico sono evidenti: questo processo migliora
la resistenza della struttura alle sollecitazioni dinamiche, mantenendo inalterate nel tempo la sua reattività e la sua rigidità.

Superleggera è la bici da competizione per eccellenza. E’ il modello scelto dai professionisti del Team Lampre per le sue straordinarie doti di leggerezza
e solidità, portate ai massimi livelli dall’impiego di carbonio 30 Ton e, nei punti più sollecitati del telaio, della fibra super-resistente 60 Ton. La particolare
disposizione degli strati di carbonio si combina a tecnologie rivoluzionarie (ZnO, LIT, Special Weave) per ottenere la massima resistenza all’urto e un elevato assorbimento delle vibrazioni. La scatola integrata del movimento centrale è stata alleggerita con una particolare lavorazione in cnc dell’ inserto in
alluminio, mentre il tubo sterzo alloggia calotte monoscocca in carbonio costruite in mold, leggerissime e affidabili. Il tocco finale è dato dalla verniciatura
ultralight del telaio, con tecniche e materiali studiati appositamente da Wilier Triestina per conferire più resistenza e meno peso al rivestimento finale.
Our Cento1 Superleggera is the ultimate race machine – the choice of Team Lampre because of its extraordinary balance of light weight, lateral stiffness,
strength, and dampening capability. The SL’s stiffness-to-weight is unrivaled due to our use of the world’s most sophisticated carbon: 30 Ton for resilience
in low-stress areas and the incredibly strong 60 Ton where applied loads are greatest. Then we implement ZnO (Nanoparticles Zinc Oxide) resin for low-void
integrity, as well as LIT molding for maximum compaction. Going even further, we wrap the SL in a Special Weave carbon skin for impact resistance and
vibration dampening. Our oversize and integrated bottom bracket utilizes precision CNC alloy inserts to shave grams while optimizing power transfer. The
monocoque carbon headset cups are constructed in mold to further reduce weight. Our ultralight paint completes and predects this perfect package.
We’ve also leveraged LIT (Large Inflation Tube) technology in the making of the Cento1 Superleggera. Our prepreg carbons benefit from even higher and more uniform
compaction through the use of industrial, high pressure bladders. The bladders expand from within the frame’s tubing, pushing against the inner walls of the tubes as the
frame mould exerts opposing pressure from the outside. The combined compaction-forces result in a precision, lower-void construction and consistent wall thickness of the
tubes throughout the frame’s construction. More traditional carbon manufacturing processes fail to optimally compact a composite, resulting in varied wall thicknesses, or
voids (undesirable resin deposits), along a frame’s tubing that compromise structural integrity. That could translate into reduced longevity and strength. So the advantages
of the Cento1 SL’s construction are obvious: increased capacity to handle stresses, optimal torsional stiffness, and unparalleled responsiveness.
La trama tridimensionale di fibre di carbonio che riveste il telaio di Cento1 Superleggera non produce solo un effetto estetico inimitabile. La densità dell’intreccio delle
speciali fibre T800H nelle tre dimensioni rende il tessuto molto rigido e migliora l’assorbimento delle vibrazioni. Inoltre, la particolare densità e natura dell’intreccio fanno sì
che diminuisca il KIC (coefficiente di propagazione della cricca): più questo coefficiente è basso, più è improbabile che una cricca evolva in modo critico.
Although striking, the Cento1 Superleggera carbon “skin” is not merely aesthetic! Through extensive testing, we established a combination of layup and weave density to reach an ideal
critical stress intensity toughness (KIC). The layup configuration of T800H carbon fibers forms a three-dimensional outer weave that increases strength and stability, dampens road vibration
and makes the frame more impact-resistant.
Rigidità, comfort e resistenza sono le tre componenti che fanno di un telaio monoscocca un grande telaio. Ma è necessario trovare un equilibrio perfetto fra questi fattori,
che in caso contrario andrebbero uno a scapito dell’altro. Una fibra di carbonio si caratterizza per il suo modulo elastico, per la sua resistenza alla redtura in tensione e

resistente ma poco rigido. Nel telaio di Cento1 Superleggera, fibre di carbonio con differenti specificità vengono combinate sapientemente sino a raggiungere un equilibrio
virtuoso. Le zone più sollecitate sono realizzate in fibre MR60H (con modulo elastico pari a 60 tonnellate per millimetro quadrato), mentre in altri punti vengono utilizzate
fibre T800H (30 tonnellate per millimetro quadrato) e T700SC (24 tonnellate per millimetro quadrato). L’uso della fibra MR60H presenta l’enorme vantaggio di raggiungere
la rigidità desiderata usando molto meno materiale rispetto ad un modulo più basso, a tutto vantaggio della leggerezza del telaio.
To build a great monocoque carbon frame, we look for the perfect balance of stiffness, comfort and responsiveness at the lightest possible weight. Carbon fiber is
an ideal material for bicycle frames because of its qualities of elasticity, capacity to withstand stresses, and its strength-to-weight ratio. The higher the modulus,
the stiffer the composite. On the other end of the spectrum, the lower the modulus, the more elastic it will be.
In the construction of the Cento1 Superleggera, we implemented MR60H for stiffness in the critical stress areas where lateral stiffness equates to greater
efficiency. Then we used T800H and T700SC, with more elastic characteristics, to ensure comfort and sure-footed handling. Each was used as minimally as
possible once our demanding strength and durability standards were met, ensuring the lightest weight frame possible.

LOW VOID CONTENT We’ve also implemented a special process that drastically reduces porosity – the greatest threat to the integrity of carbon composites. In
conjunction with the use of LIT, ZnO nanoparticles are utilized to ensure uniform distribution of the resin. Then we use ultrasound in our quality control procedures
to confirm the absence of porosity, meeting standards established in the aeronautic industry.
RESINA Per la fabbricazione dei nostri telai usiamo una resina epossidica di classe 120, denominata IN-2330AB. Abbiamo scelto questo materiale per le sue eccellenti
caratteristiche meccaniche e perché soddisfa ai massimi livelli il primo requisito richiesto ad una buona resina: rendere il composito resistente all’impatto.
RESIN The epoxy resin used in the construction of our frames is IN-2330AB, class 120. Class 120 denotes that the resin has been polymerized to a temperature of 120°C for
a period of one hour before undergoing an additional two-hour treatment at 150°C. This procedure lends the material extreme strength and durability.

Wilier Triestina has dedicated a new version of the Cento1 Superleggera to the
world’s winningest sprinter. The exceptional stiffness of this frame, reinforced with
T60 carbon, allows Alessandro Petacchi to transfer every last watt of his power
into blistering speed. Our carbon composites are extremely compact due to the
use of nanoparticle Zinc Oxide resin (ZnO) and to our exclusive L.I.T. technique. The
final layer of carbon is a three dimensional weave which gives the frame greater
resistance to impact and helps dampen road vibration.

Per chi non vuole invidiare nulla alle bici dei professionisti, Superleggera viene proposta anche nella versione
Racing, ispirata agli speciali modelli utilizzati da Alessandro Petacchi, Damiano Cunego e dagli altri atleti del
Team Lampre. Le misure del telaio non sono quelle tradizionali: le geometrie sono state riformulate da Wilier
Triestina appositamente per i professionisti, tenendo conto dei loro stessi suggerimenti. Uno dei tratti distintivi
di SLR è anche la particolare colorazione in nero opaco.
SLR, una road bike in assetto “da guerra”, ora a disposizione di chiunque voglia provare l’ebbrezza di pedalare
sulla bici dei campioni.
There are those who want to ride exactly what the pros do. Not just the same bike with identical materials –
they want to ride the same geometries and position themselves just as aggressively. For 2011 we introduce the
Superleggera Racing (SLR) in the same geometries used by Alessandro Petacchi and Damiano Cunego. Frame
dimensions are modified for a shorter head tube and longer top tube. To distinguish the SLR framesets from the
six standard sizes, we’ve implemented a special matte black finish.

Our proprietary oversized bottom bracket design works with standard components while at the same time providing better power transfer, more strength and increased stability where

Nel reggisella integrato il diametro interno del tubo è di 31,6 mm, adattabile quindi anche ad un supporto tradizionale. Nella parte inferiore il tubo aumenta
progressivamente di diametro per conferire rigidità al telaio. Assieme al movimento centrale integrato, consente un risparmio di peso pari a 120 grammi.
The seatmast is an integral part of the frame, gradually tapering to oversize dimensions until it comes into contact with the bottom bracket. Countless technical editors have praised this feature for the responsive handling it provides. The interior diameter of the upper portion of the seatmast is 31.6 mm so that it can be cut and used with a traditional seatpost, if necessary.

Per progettarla ci siamo serviti di un consulente speciale: il vento. Imperiale è la bici da corsa che meglio di ogni altra riassume i principi costruttivi dei telai
da cronometro. Ogni suo dettaglio obbedisce alle più rigorose leggi dell’aerodinamica. Durante lo sviluppo dell’Imperiale, abbiamo anche ricevuto il prezioso aiuto di John Cobb, esperto dell’aerodinamica. La collaborazione con questo maestro dei flussi d’aria ci ha permesso di
ottimizzare le linee del telaio. Forme, spessori e meccanica sono stati studiati per ridurre al minimo le superfici frontali e mantenere elevata la rigidità laterale. Il concetto “Wind friendly” viene enfatizzato dalle nervature di rinforzo che percorrono i tubi, la forcella e il carro. Oltre a produrre un effetto estetico
molto originale, i rilievi contribuiscono ad eliminare le flessioni e a rendere la bici “amica” dei flussi aerodinamici.
Per queste sue caratteristiche Imperiale è stata decretata Vélo de l’annèe 2010 dall’autorevole rivista francese Le Cycle.
Il tubo sella integrato è funzionale alla stabilità del telaio: il tubo verticale risulta composto da un unico elemento dall’attacco sella sino all’innesto con il
movimento centrale. Una rientranza permette alla ruota posteriore di avanzare e di aumentare la risposta allo scatto.
Lo sterzo applica l’Easy Drive System concepito per Cento1. La sagomatura offre una ridotta resistenza all’aria ed è punto d’incontro dei profili di rinforzo.
Come nella Cento1, la scatola del movimento centrale è integrata e maggiorata. Due profili “a pinna” aerodinamici scorrono nella parte inferiore dei foderi.

For the development of the Imperiale, considered by Road Bike Action magazine as the bike that defines the “aero road” movement, we partnered
with aerodynamics expert John Cobb. Together with Cobb, who has spent much of his life in Texas wind tunnels, we consulted the ultimate specialist: the wind. More than any other bike, the Imperiale embodies thoughtful implementation of features used to make time trial bikes faster. We
considered every aspect of frame forms and dimensions to minimize frontal area while preserving lateral stiffness. Each tube is sculpted to “manage” airflow, making the Imperiale what we call Wind Friendly. We structurally reinforced each tube to ensure the frame is stable and responsive
enough to win any race. Validation of our efforts came in the form of the Bike of the Year award by France’s prominent publication, Le Cycle.
The integrated airfoil seatmast is key to frame stability and responsiveness, forming a continuous element from seat clamp to bottom bracket. A slot in the
seat tube’s trailing edge facilitates a forward rear wheel position for quick accelerations. Our Easy Drive System, drawing on Cento1 innovation, optimizes
joint-functionality of head tube and fork. The oversize and integrated bottom bracket is another Cento1 innovation, while the search for every aerodynamic
advantage led us to implement stabilizing fins along the bottom of the frame’s chainstays. The Imperiale’s aero carbon monocoque fork was developed to
provide precision steering, while even its rear dropouts facilitate airflow.

La sfida era creare un telaio che ereditasse tutto il nostro know how ma che risultasse allo stesso tempo completamente innovativo, anzi, rivoluzionario. Ne
è nata Granturismo, la bicicletta da strada destinata a diventare un nuovo punto di riferimento per chi non si dedica all’agonismo più esasperato. L’esperienza maturata in questi anni in campo professionistico ci ha guidati nel progettare questa monoscocca in carbonio, nelle cui linee esuberanti si fondono
prestazioni e comfort. Per ottenere la massima rigidità torsionale, con Granturismo abbiamo introdotto il concetto Razor Edge Design: dal tubo sella e dal
movimento centrale si diramano dei profili che diventano più accentuati in prossimità dello sterzo, sino a fondersi in un unico rilievo sull’anteriore. Non è
solo un espediente estetico: gli spigoli hanno la funzione di fondere in un unicum la rigidità del tubo orizzontale, del tubo obliquo e del tubo sterzo, rendendo la bici stabile e sicura alle alte velocità e negli scatti. La solidità del telaio deriva anche dal tipo di composito utilizzato: resine e fibre di carbonio sono
quelle sperimentate con successo in Cento1. Naturalmente il dosaggio delle fibre dotate di maggiore resistenza e di quelle con proprietà più elastiche è
stato calibrato in modo tale da ottenere il risultato voluto, tenendo conto delle caratteristiche specifiche del telaio. La stabilità dell’anteriore, sinonimo di
sicurezza, è accentuata dallo spigolo che percorre la forcella per tutta la sua estensione. Un avantreno rigido rende la bicicletta perfettamente affidabile e
manovrabile, soprattutto in discesa, e solleva l’atleta dalla preoccupazione di governare lo shimming del telaio, permettendogli di concentrarsi sul gesto
tecnico negli scatti, nei rilanci e in volata. Quando si pedala “fuorisella”, e il carico di peso si sposta sull’anteriore, la risposta della bicicletta nell’assecondare
lo sforzo muscolare e nell’impostazione delle traiettorie risulta nettamente migliorata. In Granturismo la rigidità non va a scapito del comfort: grazie al
sistema di nuova concezione Smooth Rear Design le sollecitazioni verticali vengono assorbite dal posteriore del telaio senza alcuna dispersione di forza
muscolare. Il termine “smooth” sta a sottolineare proprio questo: nonostante la rigidità torsionale del posteriore, la bici permette di effettuare lunghe uscite
evitando i fastidiosi mal di schiena che spesso affliggono i ciclisti quando il telaio non concede nulla alle sollecitazioni del terreno. Leveraging our proven designs while following our innovative instincts, we have created a bike that is nothing short of revolutionary. The Granturismo
satisfies that elusive place between ProTour thoroughbreds like our Cento1 series and our award-winning value stallion, the Izoard. Our tireless search for
that magic mix of performance and comfort led to unique tube shapes and lines made possible by the latest composites technologies and monocoque
construction processes. To enhance torsional stiffness, we have introduced the Razor Edge Design concept. The Granturismo’s top and down tubes overlap
at the head tube to form a single integrated unit, then flow unbroken in squared shapes until they round and flow around the seat tube and down to the
bottom bracket. By unifying the top, head and down tubes, we’ve maximized stability for quick accelerations as well as smoothness at high-speeds. The
Granturismo’s strength and stability are due in large part to its carbon composition. Different modulus composites balance strength, stiffness and elasticity
so that the bike has something its rider can become one with: its personality. The stability of a bike’s front end is synonymous with confident handling.
Wilier has long been known for its precision forks, which make all of our bikes fast and exhilarating in turns. Like the Cento1 models, the Granturismo fork
has been specifically designed to work in harmony with the front end of the frame. The forward offset, or rake, of the fork is implemented at its crown, with
a virtually straight leading edge and tapered trailing edge. This yields a fork that smoothes out bumps while tracking with precision. Since the majority of
a rider’s weight is supported by the front end when out of the saddle, the resulting stability inspires confidence when you are climbing hard, sprinting and
railing corners. Comfort is a priority for every Wilier model, whether we’re developing bikes to win World Road titles, Ironman Championships or your next
weekend challenge. The Granturismo benefits from our conviction that efficient pedaling via torsional stiffness need not undermine a frame’s ability to
dampen, a quality commonly known as vertical compliance. Our Smooth Rear Design concept refers to the confluence of our rear stays and dropouts, which
overcome the traditional practices of joining rear triangle tubing at hard, fixed angles and junctures. Enabling Wilier owners to finish strong, without neck,
shoulder, back or bum pain is part of our long list of objectives, and accomplishments.
Molti sono i concetti costruttivi che accomunano Granturismo a Cento1, la top bike di Wilier Triestina che in questi anni si è affermata nel mondo dei professionisti. Il carro posteriore è asimmetrico, sia per quanto riguarda la disposizione degli strati di carbonio, sia per la diversa sagomatura e dimensione dei
foderi orizzontali. Inoltre, ciascuno dei due foderi non viene ottenuto tramite la giunzione di più parti, bensì è costituito da un unico elemento in monoscocca (Swingarm) . Niente viti e niente colla, dunque, con gli spessori del composito calcolati per il contrasto delle forze di trazione e non in base a necessità di
assemblaggio. Siamo intervenuti anche sulle sezioni dei tubi principali, differenziate in base alle funzioni strutturali dei singoli elementi. Per Granturismo
abbiamo scelto l’alloggiamento integrato per i cavi dei comandi e dei freni, che scompaiono dentro il telaio migliorandone l’estetica e riducendo gli attriti
di scorrimento.
Many of the design constructs that went into the creation – and success – of our top series Cento1 models make the Granturismo a worthy sibling. The
Granturismo benefits from an asymmetric rear triangle, a feature that has distinguished our top bikes in recent years. The differences in the tubes’ individual carbon layup, dimensions as well as their configuration were dictated by the contrasting forces applied to each side while a rider pedals at varying
intensities, seated and out of the saddle. Our Swingarm rear triangle design is characterized by both continuous rear stays as well as integrated monocoque
construction which unify the entire back end, including our “suspended” rear dropouts. There is no gluing or bolt-fastening used to connect tubes following
our high compaction monocoque curing process. Tubing shapes, thicknesses and directional fiber layups are implemented as part of the mold and manufacturing process for optimal material consistency and load distribution. Like our top-end models, the Granturismo boasts internal cable routing for a clean
and minimalist look, as well as smooth, precision shifting.
COME NASCE / REVOLUTION
GRANTURISMO
Una bicicletta con le caratteristiche di Granturismo non si crea dall’oggi al domani. Il processo che ha portato alla sua realizzazione, dall’idea embrionale al
prodotto finito, ha richiesto 12 mesi di lavoro in sala di progettazione, in officina e nei laboratori per i test. Il primo passo è la definizione dettagliata delle
peculiarità del telaio. Una fase delicata, che ci ha visti impegnati assieme ai nostri progettisti nell’attingere nella giusta misura alla nostra esperienza di costruttori e alla volontà di innovare. Si arriva così al primo abbozzo di disegno, una traccia ancora approssimativa delle linee che renderanno il telaio inconfondibile fra tutti gli altri. Si approfondiscono tutti i particolari sino ad ottenere una versione grezza del progetto di telaio su cui lavorare. Il disegno diventa
un modello tridimensionale, a sua volta soggetto ad un accurato lavoro di revisione e ottimizzazione. E’ il momento di dare forma al disegno: viene costruito
un primo esemplare di telaio in resina, in scala reale, sul quale si effettueranno tutti i controlli relativi agli ingombri, ai passaggi dei cavi, alla meccanica e alla
compatibilità con i vari gruppi di montaggio. Superato questo primo test il modello di prova in resina è pronto per diventare definitivo: ne viene prodotta
una nuova versione, sempre in resina, che sarà utile anche per la sperimentazione delle grafiche. Si procede con una simulazione al computer del comportamento su strada del telaio, effettuata tramite un sofisticato software in grado di riprodurre alla perfezione le condizioni reali di utilizzo della bicicletta. E’
il momento della verità, nel quale si scopre se le intuizioni avute durante l’impostazione del telaio sono corrette. Se così non fosse, si modifica lo sviluppo
in 3D sino a che il telaio non corrisponde in tutto e per tutto alle caratteristiche richieste. Con le “matematiche” 3D corrette si può costruire il primo mould,
ovvero lo stampo per la realizzazione del primo vero telaio. Ogni dettaglio è minuziosamente definito: la composizione dei vari layer di composito, quanti
strati di carbonio unidirezionale devono essere sovrapposti e con quali angolazioni, a quali temperature e a quali pressioni il composito verrà polimerizzato. Una volta che il telaio in carbonio è pronto, iniziano i test in laboratorio e su strada. I test meccanici rivelano la capacità del telaio di sostenere determinati
carichi e la sua conformità ad una prima omologazione prevista dalle normative vigenti. Il verdetto successivo spetta ai corridori dei team sponsorizzati da
Wilier Triestina, che testano la bicicletta in allenamento e in gara. Superata anche questa prova, il telaio è pronto per essere montato ed inviato ad un centro
di certificazione qualificato, che ne attesta l’omologazione secondo le nuove normative europee EN 14781 .
Da quel momento la bicicletta è pronta per essere commercializzata e diventare un nuovo emblema del glorioso marchio Wilier Triestina.

At Wilier, a project like the Granturismo begins as a collection of “What if?” questions we pose to one another. Then we solicit the feedback of our professional riders and authorized dealers. Those discussions turn into engineering sessions which lead to basic design sketches. Then we have extensive meetings
with carbon composites vendors, biomechanics consultants and our lab test partners. The next step is computer-generated imagery for three-dimensional
constructs of the proposed project. It is here that the frame and fork begin to take shape. Each minute detail is considered from every perspective, including
raw materials, manufacturing, structural integrity and durability. Of course, the overarching consideration is – as always – ride quality. Then we create a lifesize model in resin of the proposed frame. This allows us to verify functionality of features, such as cable routing, as well as compatibility with component
groupsets and parts. Based on that verification process we create one more resin model, implementing any necessary changes. If testing of the second
model is positive, we begin experimenting with color schemes and graphics. More importantly, we prepare to scrutinize the design’s structural integrity and
ride quality through video simulation.
We can simulate with amazing accuracy via mathematical formulas the real-world behavior of the frame – how its structural and material composition will
react to all riding conditions. If any aspect of the frame does not meet our expectations, we continue to refine the design.
Now it is time to create the initial mold that will generate the first prototype. This step is still largely artisanal, allowing us to apply our models of direction
carbon orientation and layup, as well as determining ideal temperatures and compaction for polymerization and final curing.
Pre-production prototypes can often weigh slightly more than final commercial models and may have small cosmetic blemishes. Still, a prototype can be
laboratory and road tested like a full production model. It undergoes an exhaustive series of lab tests to determine how it handles increasing load stresses
that simulate – and exceed – real-world cycling conditions.
The ultimate validation, however, comes from our top international pro cyclists. All the technology, creativity and science in the world can only yield a truly
innovative bike once it has received an enthusiastic thumbs-up from some of the best riders on the planet.
The final commercial stamp of approval comes in the form of the most recent quality certification, European Standard EN 14781.
At that point, we’ve done everything to ensure that a model like our revolutionary Granturismo is worthy of the Wilier name.

CENTOUNO XC
Se Cento1 è diventata un oggetto di culto per gli stradisti, perché non trasportare le stesse soluzioni tecnologiche in una mtb opportunamente adattata?
La risposta non poteva che chiamarsi Cento1 XC, e basta la prima occhiata per capire che questa è la bici da fuoristrada che rivoluzionerà il suo genere. Il
telaio monoscocca è prodotto con le stesse fibre di carbonio del modello corsa, selezionate in base alle funzioni strutturali dei vari settori. Anche le linee e
le forme dei tubi, di marcata impronta race, sono direttamente derivate da Cento1. Queste le caratteristiche principali di Cento1 XC.
Oversize BB La scatola del movimento è allargata per migliorare la rigidità. Grazie al sistema Press Fit il montaggio avviene a pressione, in modo
molto agevole.
Reggisella integrato Più rigidità e meno peso. Il diametro del tubo della è 34,9 mm, compatibile con lo Stubby Ritchey Wcs.
Foderi orizzontali asimmetrici La trazione esercitata dalla catena sollecita in modo diverso il fodero destro e il sinistro. Il carro asimmetrico
compensa la differente distribuzione delle forze, evitandone la dispersione.
Forcellini posteriori integrati Il carro è formato da soli due pezzi: il destro e il sinistro. Nessuna giunzione o fasciatura unisce l’elemento obliquo
e quello orizzontale, realizzati con un unico stampo. Ciò permette di aumentare la risposta alle accelerazioni e, grazie all’angolo di quasi 90°, di
limitare le vibrazioni sul posteriore del telaio.
Sterzo differenziato Per contrastare gli urti trasmessi dalla forcella al telaio il tubo sterzo misura 1”1/8 sopra e 1”1/2 sotto. L’avantreno diventa
più rigido e più preciso nell’impostazione delle traiettorie.
Since the Cento1 has developed a cult following among roadies, why not take the same technological innovations and implement them in the development of an off-road alter ego? We could only call it the Cento1 XC. A single glance and you will understand that this bike could likewise revolutionize the
category of cross-country superbikes. The carbon monocoque frame is constructed of the same composites as its road equivalent, determined based on
structural functionality of the various frame sections. The XC’s lines and tube shapes, that in every way convey its racing pedigree, are derived directly from
the Cento1, namely:
Oversize BB The bottom bracket is oversize to maximize torsional and lateral stiffness. The Press Fit system enables precise and fluid functioning
of bearings and crankset.
Integrated seatmast Laterally stiffer, less weight. The seatmast diameter is 34.9mm, compatible with Ritchey’s WCS Stubby seat clamp.
Asymmetric chainstays Forces applied to the drivetrain side of the frame are different from those exerted upon the non-drive side. Our asymmetric rear triangle design facilitates these differences, more evenly distributing forces in order to avoid stress imbalances.
Integrated rear dropouts The rear triangle enters the mold as left and right side halves that are joined in the monocoque mold and curing process.
The dropouts never exist as small component parts joined to the frame after initial manufacturing; they are part and parcel of the continuous
stays, which likewise never exist as separate entities. This unique design makes for a more responsive frame capable of lightning-fast accelerations. The continuous stays also eliminate sharp angles at the dropouts, minimizing impact vibrations.
Differentiated steerer tube In order to diminish the transference of impact forces from fork to frame, the steerer tube is tapered from 1 1/8” to 1
½” at the fork crown. This also enhances the stability of fork and front end for more precise tracking and handling.

2011 heralds a new line of Wilier Triestina models for those looking to ease into the sport of cycling instead of jumping in head first. Compared to full-on
race bikes, our Weekend models are all about comfort. The frame geometries are more versatile to better satisfy the needs of women and young riders. The
bikes also are slightly more compact with a higher front end for relaxed ride positions and greater control. Our Weekend line includes models with flat handlebars, as well as those with racing style “drop bars”. Both are easily transformed into modes of transportation for everyday use, accommodating fenders*
and a small cargo rack. Elegant forms are combined with distinctive colors and graphics to ensure you will look as good as you feel. Our Weekend model

The aluminum frameset and components give it a race-ready look. The smaller chainrings of its compact crankset, together with the broad range of cogs (1128), will enable you to tackle even the steepest of hills. Shifting and braking are at your fingertips with integrated, handlebar-mounted levers, while 28mmwide tires ensure comfort and confident handling.
This is our top Weekend model. The frame is constructed of double-butted aluminum, and the fork is carbon, resulting in excellent vibration dampening characteristics as well as minimal weight. It also features a compact crankset paired with an 11/28 cassette. Shimano’s renowned 105 groupset provides reliable
shifting and braking, while its RS10 wheelset ensures light weight and aerodynamics. A flat handlebar is held in place by a stem that can be flipped for either
a more or a less aggressive position.

Il telaio è in alluminio a doppio spessore. L’attacco del manubrio può essere regolato a seconda delle proprie esigenze posturali. Marostica dispone di rapporti
agilissimi (34/28), per pedalare in scioltezza anche quando la strada sale. Grazie al comando integrato sul manubrio, i freni, il cambio e il deragliatore possono
essere azionati facilmente senza distogliere le mani dalla posizione di guidae. Le ruote sono Shimano R500 e montano dei comodissimi copertoni da 28 mm.

Per questo modello i tecnici Wilier Triestina hanno optato per una guarnitura con tre moltipliche anteriori, che abbinate agli otto pignoni posteriori consentono alla bicicletta di sviluppare 24 velocità e di affrontare qualsiasi tipo di dislivello. L’attacco del manubrio è di tipo regolabile. I comandi di freni, cambio e
deragliatore sono riuniti in un unico dispositivo integrato sul manubrio.
For this model we opted for a triple crankset that, combined with an 8-speed cogset, provides a total of 24 gears so that you can handle any climb. The Asolo
also comes with an adjustable stem. Integrated brake and shift levers give you full control with your hands on the handlebars.

Originale e accattivante nello stile e nelle soluzioni meccaniche, Rossano si distingue dagli altri modelli per l’assenza del cambio tradizionale: le

Come nel modello Rossano, la caratteristica che più balza all’occhio è il cambio a otto velocità collocato internamente al mozzo posteriore. Il sistema frenante utilizza i freni V-Brake, di derivazione Mtb, particolarmente affidabili e facilmente modulabili. Il telaio è in alluminio. L’altezza del
manubrio può essere adattata in base alla statura e alle singole esigenze posturali. Per una pedalata confortevole è stata scelta la sella Prologo
Phorma, con sagomatura anatomica e grafica customizzata.
Distinctive and compelling from both stylistic and functional perspectives, our Rossano is unique by virtue of its lack of traditional derailleurs. Instead, its 8-speed drivetrain is completely housed within the rear wheel hub and is actuated by the push of a button. It also follows the popular trend of
hydraulic disc brakes. Component group and wheelset are Shimano Alfine Disc for best-in-class performance. The Rossano is the right choice for

As with our Rossano model, what stands out on this bike is the absence of a traditional drivetrain, with all 8 speeds hidden within the rear hub. It
features V-Brakes, a design first implemented for mountain bike use, which are especially reliable and adjustable. The frame is aluminum, and
