Paul Chomedey, Sieur de Maisonneuve
la colonia si è sviluppata ed è diventata
abbastanza popolosa da resistere alla minaccia
degli Irochesi.
Nel settembre del 1665, Maisonneuve riceve,
dall’intendente Steward Alexander Prouville Tracy,
l'ordine di tornare in Francia per un periodo
indefinito.
Dopo ventiquattro anni a capo della colonia,
questo meraviglioso servo di Dio lascia dunque
Montreal definitivamente. Si trasferisce a Parigi,
dove ha vissuto nell'ombra fino alla sua morte, il 9
settembre 1676. Non essendosi mai sposato,
Maisonneuve non aveva figli.
Dopo aver letto il Resoconto dei Gesuiti, questo
giovane ufficiale francese di 29 anni desidera
partecipare all'evangelizzazione della colonia della
Nuova Francia. Egli incontra Jérôme Le Royer de
la Dauversière, co-fondatore della Societàdi NotreDame. Jérôme Le Royer de la Dauversière, era un
uomo santo al servizio di Dio e dei poveri.
Conobbe anche Padre Jean-Jacques Olier, della
Società Notre-Dame de Montreal, che gli riconosce
le qualità umane, spirituali e militari, e lo sceglie
per fondare la colonia sull'isola di Montreal.
Il progetto della fondazione di Montreal è stato
bello per essere bello. Quanto coraggio per
imbarcarsi in questa avventura! Il progetto di
fondare Montreal sarà sempre inseparabile dalla
Croce di Gesù Cristo e della Risurrezione di fede
nell'amore che Gesù ha mostrato a tutti gli uomini.
Questa spiritualità dei fondatori ci deve ispirare
coraggio davanti alla croce che non dovrebbe
essere assente dal proseguimento del piano di Dio
qui a Montreal.
De Maisonneuve parte dal porto di La Rochelle, il 9
maggio 1641, con una nave insieme a 25 uomini e
Jeanne Mance si imbarcó su un’altra nave con 12
uomini. Il 17 maggio dell’anno seguente fondó
ufficialmente Ville-Marie / Montreal e tutti
parteciparono a una Messa, presieduta da Padre
Vimont , nell’attuale Museo Pointe-à-Callière. Nel
mese di dicembre, il fiume San Lorenzo è
straripato, le acque arrivarono fino al cancello del
forte poi, il 25 dicembre, si ritirarono.
La Cabane à Sucre evento è stato
annullato. Non c'era abbastanza
partecipanti per l'evento.

Avendo fatto una promessa al Signore,
Maisonneuve pianterà una croce in cima al MontRoyal, il 6 gennaio 1643.
Nella primavera del 1651 gli attacchi degli Iroquois,
per fermare la colonizzazione, sono così frequenti
che gli abitanti di Ville-Marie sono convinti che la
loro fine è arrivata. Maisonneuve chiede a tutti gli
abitanti di rifugiarsi nella fortezza. Nell'autunno
dello stesso anno, la colonia di Montreal è così
piccola che sul suggerimento di Jeanne Mance egli
deve tornare in Francia per reclutare dei volontari.
Due anni più tardi ritorna a Montreal con un
centinaio di persone, tra cui Marguerite Bourgeoys,
che stabilisce e assicura l'insegnamento nella
nuova cittadina. Le nuove reclute garantiranno la
sopravvivenza di Montreal. Se lo sforzo di
Chomedey fosse fallito, Montreal sarebbe stata,
certamente, abbandonata. Col passare del tempo,

of Jeanne Mance, Maissonneuve had to
return to France to recruit volunteers. He
returned to Montreal two years later with a
hundred people, including Marguerite
Bourgeoys, who set up teaching in the new
small town and so the survival of Montreal
was ensured. If the efforts of the Sieur de
Chomedey had failed, Montreal would
certainly have been abandoned. Over time,
the colony grew and became quite populous
to resist the Iroquois threat.

In September 1665, Maisonneuve received
from the intendant, Alexander de Prouville
de Tracy, the order to return to France for
an indefinite period.
After reading about the work done in the
new country by the Jesuits, this 29 year-old
French officer wished to participate in the
evangelization of the colony of New France.
He met Jérôme Le Royer de La
Dauversière, co-founder of the Société
Notre-Dame de Montréal. Jérôme Le Royer
de La Dauversière, was a holy man who put
himself at the service of God and the poor.
He also met with Abbé Jean-Jacques Olier,
who recognized his great human, military
and spiritual qualities. He chose him to
found the colony on the island of Montreal.
After twenty-four years at the head of the
colony, this magnificent servant of God left
Montreal for good. He settled in Paris,
where he lived in the shadows until his
death, September 9, 1676. Never having
married, Maisonneuve had no descendants.
The project of the foundation of Montreal
was magnificent.
What courage was
required to embark on this adventure! The
project to found Montréal will always be
inseparable from the Cross of Jesus Christ
and his Resurrection in the Love that Jesus
manifested for all men. This spirituality of
the founders must inspire us with courage
before the Cross, which cannot be absent
from the continuation of God's plan here in
Montreal.
De Maisonneuve left the port of La Rochelle
on May 9, 1641. He got into a ship with 25
men and Jeanne Mance was in another ship
with 12 additional men. On May 17, he
officially founded Ville-Marie / Montréal and
everyone took part in a Mass presided by
Father Vimont on the present Pointe-àCallière. In December, the St. Lawrence
River came out of its bed. The waters
reached the gate of the fort, and then
receded on the 25th of December.
The Cabane à Sucre event has
been cancelled. There were not
enough attendees for the event.
And so, Ville-Marie "finds calm and
security". Having made a promise to the
Lord, Maisonneuve will plant a cross at the
top of Mount Royal on January 6, 1643.

In the spring of 1651, attacks by the
Iroquois to stop colonization were so
frequent that the inhabitants of Ville-Marie
believed
their
end
had
arrived.
Maisonneuve asked all the inhabitants to
take refuge in the precincts of the fort. In
autumn of the same year, the colony of
Montreal was so small that at the instigation
