Diocesano “G. In the eighth edition of our tradition of hospitality of the choirs of the British tradition (until last year we used the adjective "English") the geographical boundary is moved further north with the presence of St. Andrews Renaissance Singers of the prestigious university in Scotland St . Andrews, who this year celebrates the 600th anniversary of its foundation. A thanks to the organizations and people who work with the Collegium Vocale di Crema: the Centro Pastorale of Università Cattolica di Milano through "Note d’Inchiostro" (musical arm of his work in the university), the Associationa "Mons. Quartieri” di Lodi, the Centro Culturale Diocesano di Crema “G. Lucchi" the Basilica di San Marco in Milan. Also for the Collegium Vocale di Crema is a special year: the encounter with the choir of St. Andrews has allowed us to build an exchange between the two groups and from 14th to 17th June the Italian ensemble is guest of two concerts in Scotland, in St. Ninian's Cathedral in Perth and in St. Andrews University. The choir and the orchestra of Crema lead in the land of the Highlands a program of sacred music ranging from classical to romantic repertoire. Just look at the pictures in this remote part of the world, Scotland, to feel the sensations of a wild, really on the edge of the world, but at the same time to grasp the historical and artistic value of a country that has different characteristics from the rest of the UK . The strong attachment to their cultural traditions, love for their land claims that a policy importance, a propensity friendliness and hospitality are the first impressions that stand out the evidence. Within this human tissue and artistic relives the long and uninterrupted choral tradition that marks the British Isles, whether in Europe or Oceania, a tradition that is the unmistakable mark of a story connected to the music and, in particular, to the song. We know, perhaps, the University of St. Andrews because it hosted the studies of Prince William and his wife Catherine, in reality the choir that we host this year will make us understand more fully the thickness and the historical value of this university. The program is offered in concerts is strictly Renaissance, a period of music that does not seem to belong to Scotland, so well appreciated by the same name of the chorus - "Renaissance Singers" - as if to mark a distinct identity from the rest of the music . The tour of the Collegium Vocale di Crema and one of St. Andrews Renaissance Singers becomes the meeting of two musical traditions, including repertoires very different from each other, between people and groups who are interpreters of different histories and cultures but deeply united by greatness of the music. We have repeatedly stressed the value also human and social capital of these moments of exchange and dialogue, highlighting how the love for music allows everyone, without distinction, of being in a huge community of singers and musicians, bound by that thread mysterious and ethereal that only music can pull. On the one hand the boundary of our meetings widens even further north, the other the meeting of the two bands each geographical distance makes less and less important as demonstrated in all these years when we hosted the choirs of the most prestigious colleges British . Three other choirs have already booked for the coming years and we will continue with great pleasure to experience the excitement of the first moments. The St Andrews Renaissance Singers are one of the choirs run by the University of St Andrews in Scotland. We are a mixture of people of different ages and backgrounds: students, staff and singers from outside the university. We rehearse each week in the university chapel, St Salvator’s Chapel, and sing evensongs in there several times a year, as well as putting on concerts in St Andrews and further afield. We were formerly known as the Renaissance Group and were founded in 1955 by Douglas Gifford, Professor of Spanish. He built up a magnificent choir library containing many works by Spanish composers in particular, such as Francisco Guerrero, Tomas Luis de Victoria and Alonso Lobo. He also took the choir on annual tours in Britain and Europe and had the choir sing for week-long residencies at English Cathedrals, doing evensong each evening. Nowadays we still sing mainly Renaissance music, without accompaniment, but we are also building up a relationship with the St Andrews Baroque Orchestra, with whom we performed a concert featuring Buxtehude and Bach in December 2012. Next year we will perform a concert in St Ninian’s Cathedral in Perth with the St Andrews Baroque Orchestra. We are delighted to be coming to Italy; this is our first tour under the directorship of Claire Luxford, who took over the choir in 2010.
