When we talk about “open tuning” we mean a different tuning from the standard one. Guitar is usually tuned by fourths, the only exception being between the third string (G) and the second string (B), where we have a major third. From the sixth string (the thicker one on top) the strings are tuned this way : EADGBE. All the chord shapes and fingerings are built around this tuning, so when you learn the C progression you’re going to use this standard chord shapes. When you start that’s not very intuitive, and it’s the first problem a guitar player has to face. Many prospective players just give up, because some positions seem to be too difficult (although they’re going to be easy in the long run), and the sound is often sloppy and dirty, barely rewarding the necessary efforts. Partendo da quella standard dovete quindi: – abbassare di un tono la sesta corda da Mi a Re; – abbassare di un tono la quinta corda da La a Sol; My introduction to open tunings might look limited, and sometimes will miss to underline their importance, but I think that a simplified and enjoyable approach will lead you to play with greater enthusiasm, and you will eventually be able to understand and play complex parts, getting to know your instrument in depth. Let me do a simple example. The G tuning is the first open tuning we’re going to analyze, and you’ll have to tune the strings like this : DGDGBD. Starting from the standard tuning this is what you have to do : -Tune the sixth string down a whole tone, from E to D -Tune the fifth string down a whole tone, 5 – abbassare di un tono la prima corda da Mi a Re. Utilizzando di volta in volta la chitarra accordata in modo diverso, la dimensione compositiva permetterà di esplorare nuove armonie dettate sia dallo from A to G -Tune the first string down a whole tone, from E to D (We will always relate to the standard tuning EADGBE, so please always start from there to achieve the required tuning.) This a G major tuning, so strucking your open strings will give you a G chord. If you play all the strings on the fifth fret you’ll get a C, and a D on the seventh fret. With just these three chords you’re going to have a lot of fun really quickly, and you’ll be able to play many famous tunes. To get things straight: with open strings you’ll get a G chord, so playing all the strings on another position with a barré will give you a different chord, going up the neck chromatically: G# on the first fret, A on the second, A# on the third, B on the fourth, C on the fifth and so on. When we’ll go in depth on each open tuning we’ll talk about more complex fingerings, that will allow us to play different types of chords. A big advantage with open tunings is that you’ll be able to play chords and melodies more easily, letting the strings ring and getting richer sounds that would be really hard to get with a standard tuning. This is true at the beginning, but later on things will become more challenging and rewarding even for seasoned professionals. Using different tunings from time to time you’ll often find new ideas when you compose your music, either studying new positions or merely by chance, because you’ll studio, sia spesso anche dal ‘caso’, in relazione al fatto che non ci troviamo di fronte a schemi logici precostituiti. Some players employ a particular open tuning as their own “standard tuning”, like Pierre Bensusan with his DADGAD, giving his music a distinctive sound. This book will try to bring you into different sonic landscapes, hopefully leading you to quickly learn new tunes and having fun in the process. Happy fingerpicking, Buon fingerpicking, Reno Brandoni Reno Brandoni 7 Accordatura di Sol G Tuning Re Sol Re Sol Si Re DGDGBD Iniziamo a parlare dell’accordatura di Sol. Come già vi- Let’s start to speak about the G tuning. As we’ve already seen in the preface, it’s really easy to obtain this tuning: lower the sixth string (the lower E) to D, the fifth string from A to G and the first string from E to D. This way we’ll get DGDGBD, which is a G major chord. Try to strum all the six strings and you’ll realize that the sound of the chord is complete. Now you can have a lot of fun playing endless chords, just by shifting the barre’ : you’ll get for instance an A chord on the second fret, or a C chord on the fifth fret. Don’t worry, you won’t limited to major chords: once you know the different shapes you’ll be able to play any chord. To make thing easier for you I prepared a chord diagram, showing all the shapes for major, minor and seventh chords. 8 9 10 11 7 CD 1 T A B Spanish Fandango 2 Tradizionale – Arrangiamento Reno Brandoni Accordatura: Re Sol Re Sol Si Re Traditional – Arrangement by Reno Brandoni Tuning: DGDGBD Eccoci finalmente al primo brano. 4 Here we go with the first tune. In this “basic” open tuning manual I’m not going to give you any exercise, but only easy to play tunes, so you’ll soon be able to improve your chops and have a nice repertoire. This is a traditional tune, and you should listen to some of the countless versions you can find, in order to understand how even a simple tune in open G can have many different flavors. I chose Mike Seegers’ version among all the arrangements I knew, because it’s truly a classic. This is our first tune, so I made things simpler for you, smoothing out some of the most difficult parts. In the enclosed CD you’ll find two versions: a “studio” (practice) version, played really slow, and a “performance” version played at the right speed. Before learning the tune listen carefully to both of them, and remember to practice really slowly: this approach will let you concentrate on the fingerings and memorize all the positions, to be able to play the tune fluently when you’ll be ready. 0 0 0 0 0 14 T A B 12 2 0 1 0 0 0 0 0 0 Sl 1 5 0 1 Sl 5 5 0 1 0 0 2 0 2 0 0 0 0 2 0 1 5 0 0 Sl 9 0 2 0 1 7 0 0 0 5 0 0 0 0 0 9 0 0 5 111111 21 T A B 0 2 2 1 0 0 0 1 0 0 0 0 5 0 0 5 5 0 5 5 5 5 5 0 0 0 0 Spanish Fandango 1 1 7 xxx210 12 D B G D G D 7 T A B 12 9 0 0 0 0 0 5 0 0 12 0 0 9 9 0 0 0 0 0 Sl 0 1 0 0 1 7 9 0 0 0 0 1 2 111111 0 28 1 T A B 0 3 3 1 1 0 5 0 2 9 0 0 0 0 xx0213 0 0 2 1 0 1 0 0 0 35 0 0 T A B 0 0 7 0 0 7 7 7 0 0 7 7 0 7 7 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 2 0 2 0 0 1 0 0 1 0 5 0 0 0 5 5 5 5 5 5 5 0 0 0 13 CD 3 xxx210 Pacifico 4 10 T A B Musica: Reno Brandoni-Giorgio Cordini Accordatura: Re Sol Re Sol Si Re Music: Reno Brandoni-Giorgio Cordini Tuning: DGDGBD Ecco un esempio di ‘chitarra ritmica’ in Sol aperto. This is an example of “rhythm guitar” in open G tuning. In this tune you can try to play as if you were comping, but at the same time you’ll play a melody as well, thus being able to perform it as an instrumental. Please pay attention to the rhythm of the different bars, like bar number 8. My suggestion is to listen several times to the CD, either to the “unplugged” version or the complete one, with backing vocals and percussions. Partendo dalla sesta corda presenta: Do Sol Do Sol Do Mi. Among the most frequently used open tunings this the most unusual one. This might be because it’s difficult to achieve it, and some strings have to be raised, and other lowered. What can I say about this tuning? It’s my favorite for sure. The sound is really inspiring, if you just play the open strings you feel like you’re in a magic world, full of emotions and soothing melodies. It’s quite easy to achieve : just tune your guitar in G and then lower the second string by a half tone, from B to Bb. The result will be DGDGBbD. T A B This is one of my favorite tunes to play. It’s usually the last tune during my live shows, because of its intensity and the presence of three different melodies. Just be careful when you play the third section, because it changes to a major key, so you have to be aware of the fact that some open strings can’t be played because they don’t fit the new key. Besides that, just follow my indications about the fingerings I suggested, to keep a fluent sound. The use of the capo is pretty common in open tunings, to get a somehow different sound and to keep things fresh and interesting. This a really peculiar tune : the guitar stands really easily on its own, but it also blends really nicely with other instruments, such as the bouzouki played by Giorgio Cordini in our album “Anema e corde”. The guitar part has strong medieval reminiscences, and it’s inspired by the music of british guitar player John Renbourn. The final section (Third part) could be removed. It doesn’t add anything new, but it’s something fresh, and it’s a good bridge to go back to the first part main theme. Giorgio and I usually have fun playing this full version during our gigs. Remember to keep chords and notes ringing as long as you can, even when some fingers move to grab additional notes. The second part is played really fast, with a lot of hammer-ons and pull-offs, and the only way to do that fluently is to learn the correct positions and fingerings, practicing really slowly. For this tune I got the inspiration from Stefan Grossman’s Tuning : DADGAD “Woman from Donori” ( Donori is a sardinian village), and I ironically composed “Woman from San Teodoro” ( another sardinian village where we spent many holidays together in a house I own). This tune is easy to play and it employs the DADGAD tuning. No catch here : just use the suggested positions and fingerings. Pay attention to the muted sound in bar #8 : you have to mute strings with your left index. In bar #25 remember to play the part nice and slow. One more thing : don’t forget to use the Capo! The “studio” version on the CD is without Capo, the “performance” with the capo on the second fret : I think you should do the same. Nell’ultima battuta la seconda corda, premuta al dodicesimo tasto, va tirata su di mezzo tono prima di essere suonata, fino a ottenere una nota La# (come se aveste premuto il tredicesimo tasto); subito dopo averla suonata, la corda va lentamente rilasciata per tornare al suono naturale di La. 0 2 0 0 5 Music: Reno Brandoni Musica: Reno Brandoni Accordatura : Re La Re Sol La Re 2 0 7 4 6 4 4 R R4 4 0 4 1 P 2 3 P 0 4 P 2 0 4 2 3 1 1. 2. 65 3 3 4 0 0 111314 21 0 2 T A B 25 0 H 2 4 0 1. 1 0 0 1 1 4 0 0 0 0 2. 4 0 R4 H 4 0 0 0 0 0 4 0 P 0 4 1 0 0 P 2 4 0 0 0 0 0 1 37 0 T A B 2 H 0 1 P 2 4 P 2 7 4 6 4 4 R 6 4 4 P H 0 0 4 0 P 7 4 0 2 4 0 T A B 4 0 4 2 0 H H 1 4 5 0 5 4 5 0 Sl 4 5 0 0 0 0 41 T A B 0 0 4 5 0 5 0 Sl 4 5 0 Sl 4 5 2 0 T A B 2 0 2 0 2 0 0 0 5 2 2 0 2 0 2 0 0 2 0 0 0 4 0 0 5 0 0 H 4 2 2 0 0 0 2 4 0 0 2 0 2 4 37 66 0 4 0 2 0 0 T A B 12 12 12 12 0 0 0 12 0 0 5 0 5 Sl 4 5 0 Sl 4 5 12 11 0 0 0 12 0 0 P P 12 11 12 11 12 0 P 12 0 7 0 7 5 12 P 0 7 7 0 12 12 P 5 7 0 7 0 0 9 0 7 12 0 12 3 5 FINALE -½ 13 12 0 T A B 0 4 33 T A B 0 45 P 12 11 Da A a B poi FINALE 29 P 12 11 0 0 Sl Sl 4 5 0 5 0 4 5 0 Sl 4 5 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 4 2 P P 12 11 12 11 12 0 12 0 H 4 2 0 0 0 4 0 0 4 0 2 0 0 3 5 0 5 0 Sl 4 5 0 Sl 4 5 0 0 0 0 2 12 11 12 12 12 12 67 111111 Spargi CD 30 Musica: Reno Brandoni Accordatura: Re Sol Re Sol La Do T A B Music: Reno Brandoni Tuning: DGDGAC L’accordatura si ottiene partendo da quella di Sol magYou can achieve this tuning starting from G tuning, then giore e abbassando la seconda corda di un tono da Si a lower the second string by a whole tone from B to A, La, e la prima corda di un tono (due rispetto all’accordaand the first string from D to C ( that’s two whole tones tura standard) da Re a Do. starting from the standard tuning).
