REEM ACRA FEI WORLD CUP™ DRESSAGE FINAL
2011/2012
21 Apr 2012
CORNELISSEN AND PARZIVAL CLINCH BACK-TO-BACK REEM ACRA TITLES IN STYLE
by Louise Parkes
Adelinde Cornelissen and Jerich Parzival, the defending champions from The Netherlands, clinched
the Reem Acra FEI World Cup™ Dressage title for the second consecutive season when topping
the Freestyle on home turf in ‘s-Hertogenbosch (NED) today. But Germany’s Helen
Langehanenberg really pressurised the dominant Dutch duo with a spectacular performance that left
them a close second, while Italy’s Valentina Truppa was a huge hit with the packed stadium of
spectators when finishing third with Ermo del Castegno.
As Ground Jury President, The Netherlands‘ Ghislain Fouarge, later confirmed, the level of
competition at the Brabanthalle was much improved in today’s decider. “The judges were a bit
disappointed after yesterday’s Grand Prix, and Adelinde was not at her best, but it was completely
different today,” he said. A score of 86.250 clinched the title for Cornelissen, who went fourth from
last in the field of 18 starters, and that put her just over a single point ahead of runner-up
Langehanenberg.
SET THE STANDARD
Australia’s Rachael Sanna and Jaybee Alabaster set the standard with a score of 71.339 when first
to go, but were immediately overtaken by Finland’s Mikaela Lindh and Skovlunds Mas Guapo who
put 71.696 on the board. For Poland’s Katarzyna Milczarek there was deep disappointment
however when Mr Fourage stopped the test to tell her that her horse had blood on his flank, and was
therefore eliminated. The Dutch judge said afterwards that “it’s always sad to eliminate somebody,
but no-one wants to see blood on the horse”.
Fourth to go was America’s Jan Ebeling who lifted the atmosphere again with a crowd-pleasing
performance from Rafalca, but a mark of 69.875 would not challenge the leaders. Three horses later
however, Germany’s Isabell Werth and El Santo NRW certainly did. It is 20 years since the 42-yearold rider won her first FEI World Cup™ Dressage title, which she followed with a second 15 years
later, and with her usual flourish she made her entry into the arena and set to work with conviction
today.
NEVER AFRAID
This is a rider who is never afraid to give it everything she’s got, and the lady who has five Olympic
and six World Championship medals stashed in her trophy cabinet made best use of her David
Bowie musical score to steer her massive bay gelding through some powerful passage, extended
trot and canter before finishing with a dramatic one-handed ride down the centre-line. But this
partnership has been struggling with piaffe for some time now, and once again it let them down,
pinning their score just under the 80 per cent line at 79.964.
They remained out in front after the break until Langehanenberg turned the competition on its head
with a fabulous ride. Her 12-year-old stallion, Damon Hill, won the Reem Acra FEI World Cup™
Dressage Western European League qualifier at Neumunster (GER) and was runner-up in
Amsterdam (NED) on the road to this weekend’s seasonal finale, and the stunningly good-looking
horse was on the button all the way today, with lovely piaffe, passage and pirouette racking up high
scores for a strong lead with a mark of 85.214.
Judge at C Fouarge said afterwards, “Helen is a very elegant rider and can easily beat Adelinde at
the moment if everything goes ok”, and Cornelissen admitted that, having seen the German rider’s
performance, she realised she had to raise her game. But she thanked her rival for putting her under
pressure. “I knew I had to really sharpen him (Jerich Parzival) up,” she said. And a “sharpened up”
version of her extraordinary chestnut gelding is a formidable sight at the best of times.
CONSUMMATE EASE
With consummate ease the pair began their floor-plan and it was clear their score would be right up
there as the horse drummed out the amazing passage and piaffe that have become his trademark
to the beat of his now very familiar musical score. There was a tiny bit of indecision at the very end,
but as Cornelissen explained afterwards, the horse took matters into his own hands - or hooves in
his case. “After the piaffe/pirouette I was doubting a bit, so Parzival said what do you want me to to
do? Make up your mind! - so he decided!”. And as the judges awarded them 86.250 they
surpassed Langehanenberg and put the result beyond doubt.
But the excitement wasn’t quite over yet. As show organiser, Frank Kempermann, pointed out later,
the Brabanthalle was packed to capacity with 9,500 people who were enjoying every moment of the
Freestyle action. And, last to go, Italy’s Valentina Truppa and Eremo del Castegno brought the
competition to a perfect conclusion with a test so full of life that the spectators roared with delight as
she saluted the judges for the final time.
As Truppa said herself afterwards, “people were singing to some of the songs - this type of music is
happy and good for the public - it’s a combination of an Italian rider, an Italian horse and Italian
music!”, and they could hardly have brought the 2011/2012 Reem Acra FEI World Cup™ Dressage
Final to a better conclusion as Truppa became the third rider to score above 80 percent, putting
81.232 on the board for third place.
REFLECTING
Reflecting on the performances of the top-three riders, Ghislain Fouarge said they all “did a top job,
but with very different performances”, adding that, in his opinion, Langehanenberg could threaten
Cornelissen even more if she increased the degree of technical difficulty in her test. “It should be
higher,” he said. “Adelinde’s degree of difficulty is higher.”
Cornelissen believes however that Parzival has more improvement to come ahead of this summer’s
Olympic Games in London (GBR). She intends to compete with him at the Dutch Championships in
Hoofddorp and Rotterdam in preparation for that, but if Langehanenberg takes Fouarge’s advice
then the German may well give the new double-champion a run for her money in three months’ time.
Today, however, it was Cornelissen who had the style to record the 12th Dutch victory in the 27-year
history of the FEI World Cup™ Dressage series which now goes forward into its third year of
sponsorship by New York fashion designer, Reem Acra, in 2012/2013.

World Cup Dressage Final Grand Prix

‘s-Hertogenbosch, the Netherlands—April 20
Dutch rider Adelinde Cornelissen came into the 2012 Reem Acra FEI World Cup Dressage Final
as the hot favorite. Her mount, Jerich Parzival, easily won last year’s Final. But at yesterday’s
veterinary inspection Parzival’s chance to win the 2012 title was called into question when he was
held for unsoundness.
“I don’t know what happened,” said Cornelissen. “I rode the day before, and I went to the vet check,
and he was being stupid and biting, and probably that made it even worse. I figured if something
was wrong I could check with the riding. So I stepped on and started riding, and he was completely
good. I wanted the vet check done right then, but that was not an option. I had to wait until this
morning, and it was a hell of a night.
“It wasn’t the best preparation,” she continued. “I could have slept a few more hours.”
But Parzival passed his morning vet check and went on to win the Grand Prix here in ‘sHertogenbosch with a 78.02 percent. But Cornelissen admitted the test wasn’t her best. Parzival, a
15-year-old Dutch Warmblood (Jazz—Fidora, Ulft) gelding, had a small mistake in the canter halfpass zig-zag and then halted abruptly in the middle of the last piaffe and passage tour.
“It’s actually quite funny,” said Cornelissen, who rode second in the 18-horse class. “I had to do the
last centerline, and there’s always a little bit of this background music playing. Well, if you would see
the background tape you would hear that the music stopped during my piaffe [on the centerline]. So
Parzival figured he was done, and he stopped and then was like, ‘OK, I’ll keep going.’ ”
German rider Helen Langehanenberg was second aboard Damon Hill NRW on a 76.12 percent.
But Langehanenberg and the rest of the German contingency were still reeling from the unexpected
loss of team coach, Holger Schmezer. Schmezer passed away in his hotel room in ‘sHertogenbosch yesterday, and the German riders briefly considered withdrawing from the
competition. All the German competitors sported black armbands in honor of their coach.
“I think it’s really hard for everybody when somebody dies so suddenly,” said Langehanenberg, 29.
“Nobody expected it. It was really hard for us. We sat together the whole night last night, the whole
German team, and that was quite good. But we all had the same opinion that Holger wants us to
ride. That was his life, his aim, and that was why he came here. We had to ride for him.”
For the first half of the test, Langehanenberg looked like she could take the lead on the 12-year-old
Westphalian (Donnerhall—Romanze, Rubinstein I).
“I think we had a brilliant start,” she said. “He was really expressive, and we had a brilliant piaffe and
passage tour at the beginning. Then, sadly, at the end we had some mistakes, and they were
expensive. But we will work on that. He’s really in brilliant shape and so willing to do it and so
motivated to do it.”
Valentina Truppa, 26 and riding for Italy aboard Eremo del Castegno, rounded out the top three
(75.10%).

“In the indoor he’s not always so quiet, but today he was really, really good to ride,” said Truppa. “Of
course I didn’t expect to be in this position because the riders here are really strong. It’s a pleasure
for me to be in this place.”
U.S. Riders 13th And 17th
The riders representing the United States had good draw luck in the Grand Prix—with Shawna
Harding going in 16th and Jan Ebeling riding last—but mistakes marred both of their tests and kept
them out of the top 10.
This is the second World Cup Final for both Harding and her Danish Warmblood Come On III
(Come Back II—Canna, Lantaan), and the pair had a problem in the two tempis and a bobble in
their last extended trot. But the horse shined in his half-passes and one tempis for a score of 68.05
and 13th in the class.
“He was a really good boy,” said Harding. “He was just getting a little to the end of what he could
mentally handle and focus on towards the end of the test. I am super pleased. We made it all the
way here in one piece, and we’re walking back in one piece.”
Harding, Aiken, S.C., is riding an older version of her freestyle tomorrow.
“I thought it would go a little bit better in this atmosphere,” said Harding. “No matter what we’re here
to have a really good time and keep the horses happy and healthy. They had a long trip coming
over, lots of delays, but [Come On] seems to be really having a good time. He loves to be in front of
the people even though sometimes it makes him nervous with all the bright lights. But he is a special
horse.”
Jan Ebeling, Moorpark, Calif., incurred penalties on Rafalca before entering the ring by taking too
long to do so.
“Well, I got a little behind in my warm-up,” said Ebeling. “I looked at the clock and there wasn't a lot
of time. That’s why I did that extended canter to the ring and to get into the arena. I knew I was going
to be late, so I lost a little bit of focus.”
Rafalca, a 15-year-old Oldenburg (Argentinius—Ratine, Rubinstein) mare owned by Anne Romney
and Amy Ebeling, had mistakes in the two and one tempis and earned a score of 65.25 for 17th
place.
“Sometimes I think you make one mistake, and it leads to another and another,” said Jan. “It’s
unfortunate. She’s been great every day, and she’s been good at the last few shows. I wish it would
have gone a little bit better because she’s gone really well, and she warmed up nice. Sometimes
that’s not the way it goes. And the only place it counts is in the arena.”
The riders will compete in the freestyle for the World Cup title at 2 p.m. tomorrow. See results from
today’s Grand Prix on the Indoor Brabant website.

A score of 86.250 clinched the title for
Cornelissen, who went fourth from last in the field
of 18 starters, and that put her just over a single
point ahead of runner-up Langehanenberg.
As a matter of fact, expectations rose as Isabell
Werth entered the arena with El Santo FRH. It is 20
years since the 42-year-old rider and mother won
her first FEI World Cup™ Dressage title showing
Fabienne, which she followed with a second 15
years later showing 'Hannes'. With her usual
competitive attitude she made her entry into the arena and missed nothing to express her goal.
Riding half passes is one of her forces and the music accompanied the cheerful image of the pair.
The only weaknesses still were the piaffes, however the score of 79% set the target and gave the
competition a boost!

Helen Langehanenberg was very happy with her
performance, although she sadly missed her teamcoach
Holger Schmezer whom she believed to be her personal
mentor as well as he always had a strong belief in her
performances, she said afterwards. Helen relies on her
husband Sebastian Langehanenberg at shows, who always
accompanies her to the lessons from trainer Balkenhol.
During the WC Final her trainer Klaus Balkenhol was there in
person as he was training British Laura Bechtolsheimer in
Great-Britain while he also kept an eye on his daughter
Annabel who has her first start in the outdoor season next
week in Hagen.
Last to go, Italy's Valentina Truppa and Eremo del Castegno
brought the competition to a perfect conclusion with a test so
full of life that the spectators roared with delight as she
saluted the judges for the final time.

Nessun Dorma for the walk, the song 'Marina' for passage,
as Truppa said herself afterwards, "people were singing to
some of the songs - this type of music is happy and good for
the public - it's a combination of an Italian rider, an Italian

score above 80 percent, putting 81.232 on the board for third
place.
So it was Cornelissen who had the style to record the 12th
Dutch victory in the 27-year history of the FEI World Cup™
Dressage series which now goes forward into its third year of
sponsorship by New York fashion designer, Reem Acra, in
2012/2013.
For Poland's Katarzyna Milczarek there was deep
disappointment however when chair judge Mr Fouarge stopped the test to tell her that her horse had
blood on his flank, and was therefore eliminated. The Dutch judge explained afterwards that it's
always sad to eliminate somebody, but it's in the rules. The skin of grey horses is more thin and
sensitive for little problems caused by the spurs than skins of other colours, Fouarge explained. The
'blood rule' is still under discussion with the FEI due to the elimination of Cornelissen at WEG
Kentucky 2010 when blood occurred at Parzival's mouth for a little while, so in the future new
chances to restart might occur.

but no-one wants to see blood on the horse”. Fourth to go was America’s Jan Ebeling who lifted
the atmosphere again with a crowd-pleasing performance from Rafalca, but a mark of 69.875 would
not challenge the leaders. Three horses later however, Germany’s Isabell Werth and El Santo NRW
certainly did. It is 20 years since the 42-year-old rider won her first FEI World Cup™ Dressage title,
which she followed with a second 15 years later, and with her usual flourish she made her entry into
the arena and set to work with conviction today.
They remained out in front after the
break until Langehanenberg turned the competition on its head with a fabulous ride. Her 12-year-old
stallion, Damon Hill, won the Reem Acra FEI World Cup™ Dressage Western European League
qualifier at Neumunster (GER) and was runner-up in Amsterdam (NED) on the road to this
weekend’s seasonal finale, and the stunningly good-looking horse was on the button all the way
today, with lovely piaffe, passage and pirouette racking up high scores for a strong lead with a mark
of 85.214. Judge at C Fouarge said afterwards, “Helen is a very elegant rider and can easily
beat Adelinde at the moment if everything goes ok”, and Cornelissen admitted that, having seen the
German rider’s performance, she realised she had to raise her game. But she thanked her rival for
putting her under pressure. “I knew I had to really sharpen him (Jerich Parzival) up,” she said. And a
“sharpened up” version of her extraordinary chestnut gelding is a formidable sight at the best of
times.
CONSUMMATE EASE
With consummate ease the pair began their floor-plan and it was clear their score would be right
up there as the horse drummed out the amazing passage and piaffe that have become his
trademark to the beat of his now very familiar musical score. There was a tiny bit of indecision at the
very end, but as Cornelissen explained afterwards, the horse took matters into his own hands - or
hooves in his case. “After the piaffe/pirouette I was doubting a bit, so Parzival said what do you want
me to to do? Make up your mind! - so he decided!”. And as the judges awarded them 86.250 they
surpassed Langehanenberg and put the result beyond doubt. But the excitement wasn’t quite
over yet. As show organiser, Frank Kempermann, pointed out later, the Brabanthalle was packed to
capacity with 9,500 people who were enjoying every moment of the Freestyle action. And, last to go,
Italy’s Valentina Truppa and Eremo del Castegno brought the competition to a perfect conclusion
with a test so full of life that the spectators roared with delight as she saluted the judges for the final
time.
As Truppa said herself afterwards, “people were singing to some of the songs - this type of
music is happy and good for the public - it’s a combination of an Italian rider, an Italian horse and
Italian music!”, and they could hardly have brought the 2011/2012 Reem Acra FEI World Cup™
Dressage Final to a better conclusion as Truppa became the third rider to score above 80 percent,
putting 81.232 on the board for third place.
REFLECTING
Reflecting on the performances of the top-three riders, Ghislain Fouarge said they all “did a top
job, but with very different performances”, adding that, in his opinion, Langehanenberg could
threaten Cornelissen even more if she increased the degree of technical difficulty in her test. “It
should be higher,” he said. “Adelinde’s degree of difficulty is higher.” Cornelissen believes
however that Parzival has more improvement to come ahead of this summer’s Olympic Games in
London (GBR). She intends to compete with him at the Dutch Championships in Hoofddorp and
Rotterdam in preparation for that, but if Langehanenberg takes Fouarge’s advice then the German
may well give the new double-champion a run for her money in three months’ time. Today,
however, it was Cornelissen who had the style to record the 12th Dutch victory in the 27-year history
of the FEI World Cup™ Dressage series which now goes forward into its third year of sponsorship
by New York fashion designer, Reem Acra, in 2012/2013. For further information on the Reem

Quotes:
Helen Langehanenberg, talking about Damon Hill NRW - “I rode him as a 5 year old in the
Championship of Young Horses when he was already, I think, a great horse!”. Italy’s Valentina
Truppa, talking about the uniform she wears, - “it is the uniform of the Carabinieri which is a
gendarmerie, there is a sports team and I am a member of the dressage team...there are also
riders in eventing and dressage”. Ghislain Fouarge, talking about Cornelissen, Langehanenberg
and Truppa - “three completely different riders, three completely different horses, but all top quality”.
Adelinde Cormelissen wins the Reem Acra Final Grand Prix

The defending champions, Adelinde Cornelissen and her mighty chestnut gelding Jerich Parzival,
swept to victory in the Grand Prix at the Reem Acra FEI World Cup™ Dressage Final in ‘sHertogenbosch, The Netherlands this afternoon. And the 32-year-old Dutch rider was much relieved
that she could live up to expectations on her home turf after a long and restless night.
Held over during the first horse inspection yesterday, Parzival passed with flying colours when reinspected this morning and produced the winning score that pinned Germany’s Helen
Langehanenberg and Damon Hill into second while Italy’s Valentina Truppa and Eremo Del
Castegno finished third. But as Cornelissen admitted after heading the field, “it wasn’t the best
preparation - and I could maybe have slept a few more hours last night!”
The morning was overshadowed by the tragic news that Dressage team coach, Holger Schmezer,
who had travelled with the three German contenders to ‘s-Hertogenbosch, had passed away
suddenly the previous evening. And the presentation ceremony was tinged with great sadness as
the riders and spectators stood for a minute’s silence as a mark of respect.
At the post-competition press conference, Helen Langehanenberg explained that the she and her
fellow-German competitors, Isabell Werth and Nadine Capellmann, sat together well into the night
discussing whether they should withdraw from the Final under the circumstances. “It was really hard
for everyone - completely unexpected. In the end it was our opinion that Holger would want us to
ride - that was his aim, why he came here, so we had to do it for him,” she said.
FIRST TO GO
First to go in today’s competition was Denmark’s Lone Joergensen who set a strong standard
with a lovely performance from the light-moving FBW de Vito for a score of 71.337. Cornelissen and
Parzival swept into the lead however, when next to go. The rider, who took two gold medals at last
year’s FEI European Dressage Championships in Madrid (ESP), admitted afterwards that her
horse may be a bit ring-rusty “because he only had two shows this winter”. As a result “Parzival
maybe doesn’t have the rhythm of competition yet this year” she said, but she anticipates that
“tomorrow he’s going to be even better!”.
Commenting on her performance she pointed out that “Parzival in all exercises doesn’t have any
bad one, his passage and piaffe are always good”, but even this master of his trade can make a
mistake now and again. Today he ground to a halt as they were executing the final movements
down the centre line. “There is always background music, and today as we were doing the piaffe
the music stopped, so he thought he was finished - I had to tell him, No! Not yet!” Cornelissen said,
laughing. Despite that blip, the pair posted a score of 78.024, and it would not be beaten.
BUZZ OF EXCITEMENT
Germany’s Isabell Werth was third into the arena and there was a buzz of excitement as her 11year-old gelding, El Santo NRW, registered high scores in the early stages of his test. But, following
a big spook toward the end of the extended canter, the scores began to deteriorate and this
partnership completed with 69.802, which was only good enough for 10th in the final analysis.
Fellow-German respresentatives, Langehanenberg and Damon Hill, rose to the occasion however
to produce a charming programme. “I was really happy with him!” the rider said of her handsome
stallion. “He was brilliant at the start - he did lovely piaffe and passage, but sadly at the end there
was a mistake, but he is so motivated and willing!” she said. “I was so sorry for the mistake, but we
are two living beings, and it is what it is!” she added. And her score of 76.125 would prove plenty
good enough for runner-up spot.
SURPRISED
Valentina Truppa was surprised to find herself in third. “I didn’t expect to be in the top three,” she
said. “My horse was really good and very concentrated - he’s not usually at his best indoors!”, she
pointed out after racking up 75.106 to place herself well ahead of The Netherlands’ Hans Peter
Minderhoud and Glock’s Tango in fourth.
Great Britain’s Richard Davison finished fifth following yet another classic display of professional
riding. He steered Hiscox Artemis through his movements with a veteran’s touch to put 73.374 on
the scoreboard, while Sweden’s Patrik Kittel claimed sixth place with Toy Story who showed some
flashes of brilliance during his test.
America’s Jan Ebeling (Rafalca) and Shawna Harding (Come On III) undermined their chances by
mis-timing their entry into the arena and were subsequently penalised with the deduction of allimportant points. But all riders will compete again in tomorrow’s decisive Freestyle to Music which
begins at 14.00 local time.
Australia’s Rachael Sanna and Jaybee Alabaster will lead the way, while the defending champions
will start 15th of the 18 horse-and-rider combinations and will be a tough act for any of the others to
beat.

The draw for the Grand Prix, the opening competition of the Reem Acra FEI World Cup™ Dressage
2011/2012 Final, took place at the Brabanthalle in ‘s-Hertogenbosch, The Netherlands, this
afternoon. And Denmark’s Lone Jorgensen got an early surprise when pulling her own name out of
the hat as first to go with FBW de Vito when the action gets underway tomorrow. However, although
drawn in number two position, defending champion, Dutch rider Adelinde Cornelissen, must wait
until tomorrow before she knows if she will start. Her 15 year old gelding, Jerich Parzival, was sent
to the holding box during the first veterinary inspection today, and will be presented for reexamination in the morning.
The order-of-go for the Grand Prix is as follows:
1, FBW de Vito (Lone Jorgensen) DEN; 2, Jerich Parzival (Adelinde Cornelissen) NED; 3, El Santo

HISTORY
The 2011/2012 Final is the 27th in the history of FEI World Cup™ Dressage, and the ninth to take
place in ‘s-Hertogenbosch where Denmark’s Anne-Grethe Jensen won the inaugural title with
Marzog in 1986. Great Britain’s Chris Bartle and Wily Trout lined up second, and Switzerland’s
Christine Stuckelberger and Rubilit von Unk finished third that year.
Stuckelberger was
victorious at the same venue two years later, this time partnering Gauguin de Lully, and then
Germany’s Sven Rothenberger riding Andiamo, Isabell Werth with Fabienne, and Monica
Theodorescu and Ganimedes claimed the top step of the podium at the Brabanthalle in 1998, 1990
and 1993. There was a four-year wait before the Final returned to the Dutch venue, and by then
there was a new girl in town.
Anky van Grunsven and the great Bonfire had already claimed the
honours in Los Angeles (USA) and Gothenburg (SWE) when stepping up to claim the trophy for the
third consecutive season at ‘s-Hertogenbosch in 1997. And she won again at the revered home
fixture in 2000 before Germany’s Ulla Salzgeber and Rusty recorded the second of their back-toback successes at the Brabanthalle in 2002.
SENSATIONAL RUN
The Final was staged in Dusseldorf (GER), Amsterdam (NED) and twice in Las Vegas (USA)
before Van Grunsven completed her sensational run of nine victories over a period of 13 years
when taking the victory gallop with IPS Salinero at Den Bosch in 2008, while Edward Gal and
Moorlands Totilas ensured the glory remained at home once again when heading the line-up the last
time this event was held here in 2010. So of course Cornelissen is hoping that she will not only
become the fifth rider in the history of the series to record a back-to-back double with the same
horse, but to do so in front of her home crowd.
The Netherlands’ Ghislain Fouarge is President of the Ground Jury and will be joined by Susan
Hoevenaars (AUS), Isabel Judet (FRA), Gary Rockwell (USA), Leif Tornblad (DEN), Katrina Wust
(GER) and Foreign Judge Stephen Clarke (GBR) in deciding the result as the action gets underway
tomorrow at 12.00 local time. Following the Grand Prix, the top 15 riders qualify for Saturday’s
Freestyle to Music competition, at the end of which the coveted trophy will be awarded to the
2011/2012 Reem Acra FEI World Cup™ Dressage champion.

2012 World Cup Finals
Dutch number one Grand Prix rider Adelinde
Cornelissen grabbed her second, consecutive
World Cup title by winning the kur to music at the
2012 World Cup Finals in 's Hertogenbosch, The
Netherlands, on Saturday afternoon 21 April 2012.
In front of a sell-out crowd of 9,500 spectators
Adelinde achieved the high score in front on home
turf, but it was German Helen Langehanenberg who
became the winner of hearts.
Bagging a purse of 56,000 euro, Cornelissen was all smiles when she saw a winning total of
86.250% flash on the jumbotron. The 32-year old put in a very solid, high performance freestyle with
the predictable highlights, but the ride was not as flawless as the normal Cornelissen recipe
prescribes. The trot half passes were wonderful, the tempi changes straight and uphill, and the
double pirouettes on the spot. The passage was lightfooted and graceful, but Parzival's bubbly
energy and activity in passage and piaffe is directed upwards instead of forwards, so the horse
often becomes croup high instead of shifting the hind legs underneath the body towards the point of
gravity. The extended walk was good with nice stretch in the neck and much overtrack, the collected
walk was pure in rhythm.
Adelinde and Parzival
While Adelinde usually rides totally faultfree, her freestyle at
the World Cup, with music from the Nutcracker and Swan
Lake arranged by Pyntago Productions, was not her most
accurate performance to date. There were three bobbles in
the test: a minor glitch in the first piaffe, a mistake in the one
tempi's on the centerline, and a clear loss of balance and
rhythm with a double beat behind at the end of the piaffe
pirouette. Adelinde's music is well in tune to her horse's gaits
and appeals in its simplicity.
Adelinde scored 86.250%, but the judging panel of seven
(Clarke, Hoevenaars, Törnblad, Fouarge, Wüst, Judet,
Rockwell) was clearly divided about her score and ranking.
Five judges had her first, but Wust and Judet placed her
second. Her score ranged from 82.875% (Tornblad) to
89.625%% (Rockwell), which is a difference of 6,75 % (!!).
This might be indicative of a few issues: some judges are
influenced by the halo-effect (the name of the rider) and want to conform to peer pressure or, most
likely, it proves that the system and format of judging the freestyle (not the judges) are inadequate:
the scores for the artistic part of a test fluctuate way too much and become too dependable on taste
instead of being gauged by facts presented in the arena. Adelinde's artistic scores ranged from
84% to 93% and she was certainly not the only rider which such gigantic differences in her marks.
(See video of Adelinde's ride)
Langehanenberg, Favourite of the Critics
Helen Langehanenberg knows she had a stellar ride
German Helen Langehanenberg certainly must have made
the judges' job difficult with her magnificent ride on her
Westfalian licensed stallion Damon Hill NRW (by Donnerhall
x Rubinstein). She could easily have placed first considering
the mistakes Adelinde made. Helen was definitely
considered the winner of hearts by many spectators and
critcs on the sideline. It's worth speculating if she would have
grabbed that World Cup title had the Finals not been in
Holland.
Langehanenberg and Damon Hill exemplified what dressage
is all about: gymnastics of the horse while advocating
lightness and harmony. Since the 2011 European
Championships Damon Hill has matured tremendously: he's
able to stay up in the bridle at all times and carry his rider
through the test without losing his breath. With these
problems worked out, Damon Hill has become one of the
best dressage horses in the world definitely ranking him amongst the medal contenders for the
London Olympics.
Riding to beautiful film music and self composed pieces arranged by German freestyle designer
Michael Erdmann, Langehanenberg started her ride with piaffe, passage and trot extensions to the
rhythm of the music. She made the technically very difficult movement of passage, half pass
passage, followed by trot half passes in the oppositive direction.
Helen Langehanenberg on a spectacular Damon Hill
There was a small communication error in the passage half
pass to the right and this would remain to be the only
"mistake" in Helen's test. The passage, though, is
extraordinary. The liver chestnut stallion bounces 40
centimeters off the ground with the hindlegs under the body.
The extended walk was brilliant. The canter work was
performed to emotional, epic music supporting the gaits of
her horse and taking the spectator on a journey through her
ride. The tempi's were super, the canter half passes big. Only
in one double pirouette to the left Damon Hill became a bit
exuberant in the rhythm. At all times, Helen was the invisible
rider in the saddle given aids almost undetectable to the eye.
It was dressage pure which makes the sport so incredibly
exciting.
Helen posted a super 85.214%, a personal best score so far.
On a technical level her marks ranged from 78.25%
(Tornblad) to 87.25% (Rockwell) and on an artistic level her marks veered from 82.00% (Tornblad)
to 92.00% (Fouarge). On average her scores ranged between 80.125% (Tornblad) and 87.125%
(Fouarge, Judet). Two judges had her first, five second. Helen's second place in the 2012 World
Cup Finals made her go home with 45,000 euro prize money. (see video of Helen's ride)
Valentina Truppa Enthuses the Crowds
An ecstatic Valentina Truppa finishes her ride on Eremo
Italian Valentina Truppa and her Italian bred Eremo del
Castegno (by Rohdiamant x Weltmeyer) were able to
maintain their third place achieved in the Grand Prix. The
chunky bay gelding has amazing piaffe and passage talent,
springing with much activity and lift from the ground, but at the
start of the ride he was a bit fixed in the back and not
swinging through the body as a relaxed athlete should do.
Also in the trot extensions, he's spectacular in front but has
trouble generating overtrack.
Valentina's upbeat music of Italian medleys (O Sole Mio,
Marina Marina) is a definite crowd pleaser due to its
recognizability. Highlights of her test included the canter zig
zag, the one-handed one tempi's after which she patted
Eremo on his butt (provoking laughter from the crowds), and
tempi changes on curved lines. The degree of technical
difficulty was upped at the end of the ride: an extended trot
with a direct transition to piaffe followed by passage and piaffe half pirouettes changing direction.
The last minutes of the ride were a bit overwhelming with the high amount and repetition of piaffe
and passage which he executes like a routine trick. The combination could improve overall on
achieving more lightness in the bridle with the rider standing less in the stirrups and holding her
hands so high.
The duo concluded their winter fairytale season after a victory in Frankfurt with a 81.232% score to
finish third at the World Cup Finals in Den Bosch. Valentina ranked between third and fifth with the
judges. They were quite in unison on Truppa's technical scores but for the artistic part her marks
ranged between 81.00% and 93.00%. (See video of Valentina's ride)
Girl Power in Den Bosch
With Cornelissen, Langehanenberg and Truppa filling the podium at the 2012 World Cup Finals,
three young dressage ladies proved to be armed and dangerous for the summer Olympics. Since
the sale of Totilas, Cornelissen has become more used to having free reign on the scene and
snatches trophies wherever she appears. Langehanenberg was the first rider in a while truly
breathing down her neck.
"Helen rode a really good test and I knew I really had to sharpen him (Parzival) up a bit,"
Cornelissen said about her preparation for the freestyle. She added that even though she is testing
new music, she probably will stick to her old freestyle (Est. 2009) for the Olympics.
Valentina Truppa waves to the crowds
Valentina Truppa waves to the crowds
Langehanenberg admitted she wanted to give it her all in the
Kur. "I tried to give everything we can. It nearly worked out,"
she said at the press conference. "I tried to make it difficult
for her (Adelinde). She is such a great rider and has ridden
so many great tests." Helen will give her horse a long break
now and only reappear with him at the German
Championships in Balve in June.
Truppa acknowledged that her scores benefit from her
popular music. "This type of music is very good for the public;
an Italian rider with an Italian horse with Italian music," she
said.
FEI Judge General and head of the ground jury, Ghislain
Fouarge commented that Langehanenberg could have
beaten Adelinde with a different floorplan. "All three did a top
performance," the Dutch judge said. "Helen is a very elegant
rider who can easily beat Adelinde at this moment if she had
a higher degree of technical difficulty."
When Cornelissen was asked if she feared the competition, she replied "I'm not afraid. I'm not at
100% which I'm planning to be in London. I'm not worried."

REEM ACRA FEI WORLD CUP™ DRESSAGE FINAL
2011/2012
12 Apr 2012
CORNELISSEN AND PARZIVAL ON THE TRAIL OF A DOUBLE AT DEN BOSCH by Louise
Parkes
Adelinde Cornelissen will be hoping to reclaim the Reem Acra FEI World Cup™ Dressage series
title on home turf in ‘s-Hertogenbosch, The Netherlands next week. This Dutch city, which played
host to the very first FEI World Cup™ Dressage Final back in 1986, will welcome 18 competitors
from 11 nations to the 2011/2012 finale which begins on Tuesday 18 April.
Historically, riders from The Netherlands have dominated this series, with 11 wins from 26 seasons,
and Cornelissen is, undoubtedly, the one they all have to beat this time around. She has been all but
untouchable since scooping the Reem Acra title in Leipzig (GER) 12 months ago, going on to claim
Grand Prix Special and Freestyle gold, along with team bronze, at the FEI European Dressage
Championships in Rotterdam (NED), last August. And her equine partner, the big, bold chestnut
Jerich Parzival, showed he has lost none of his edge when sweeping to victory on both of their
appearances on the Reem Acra Western European League circuit over the winter months,
swamping the opposition with strong scores at both Mechelen (BEL) in December and again in
Amsterdam (NED) in January.
BACK-TO-BACK DOUBLES
If Cornelissen succeeds in making it a back-to-back double of series victories with the same horse,
then she will become the fifth rider to do so. Switzerland’s Christine Stuckelberger and Gaugin de
Lully were first to achieve this distinction in 1987 and 1988, and Germany’s Monica Theodorescu
and Ganimedes followed suit in 1993 and 1994.
Cornelissen’s fellow-countrywoman, Anky van Grunsven then got into her stride with a double in
1995 and 1996 before setting a new record for three consecutive wins when repeating their
supremacy in 1997. Germany’s Ulla Salzgeber and the much-loved Rusty claimed the honours in
both 2001 and 2002, but Van Grunsven’s success rate in this series, and throughout her
spectacular career, has left her in a league of her own.
She came back to do another double with Bonfire in 1999 and 2000 and the first two parts of yet
another treble with Salinero in 2004, 2005 and 2006. It will be a long time before any other rider will
have such a huge impact on the sport, but Cornelissen will be attempting to secure her place in the
pages of the Dressage history-books when Parzival steps into the ‘s-Hertogenbosch arena next
week.
DISTINGUISHED CONNECTION
The sport of Dressage and the venue at ‘s-Hertogenbosch have a long and distinguished
connection. This will be the ninth FEI World Cup™ Dressage final to take place at the Brabanthalle,
and Gerrit Jan Swinkels, President of Indoor Brabant, has no shortage of experience when putting
together a world-class fixture. He has been on the Organising Committee for 36 years and is now
preparing for the 45th show. This man with a winning formula, who turns 65 later this year, says he
will retire after the 50th show, so he still has some way to go yet.
And he has another important claim to fame, as he was the first person to introduce Anky van
Grunsven to horses. She would go on to become one of the greatest influences in the sport of
Dressage in subsequent years, so there is a very close link between top-class Dressage and the
organisation of the sport which is enjoying greater popularity than ever in recent years.
BEST EFFORTS
Cornelissen of course must see off the best efforts of some formidable opposition in her quest for
double-glory. The Western European League contingent includes Sweden’s Patrick Kittel, who won
twice with Toy Story on home territory this season - first at Stockholm in November and again at the
final qualifier at Gothenburg in February. He only just pipped fellow-Swede Tinne Vilhelmson-Silfven,
riding Don Auriello, in Stockholm, and Vilhelmson-Silfven will join him in taking on Germany’s Helen
Langehanenberg (Damon Hill/Responsible), double FEI World Cup™ Dressage champion Isabell
Werth (Der Stern/Don Johnson/El Santo NRW) and Nadine Capellmann (Girasol 7/Elvis VA).
Cornelissen’s compatriot and fellow European bronze medallist, Hans-Peter Minderhoud, made his
mark with IPS Tango at the opening leg in Odense (DEN) last October while Italy’s Valentina Truppa
headed the line-up at Frankfurt (GER) in December with Eremo del Castegno and will be at next
week’s Final. The veteran Richard Davison is the sole British contender with Hiscox Artemis, while
Lone Jorgensen’s increasingly impressive results with FBW De Vito have earned a place for this
experienced Danish rider.
The Netherlands will also have a third representative in Jenny Schreven, and Krawall, while Mikaela
Lindh flies the Finnish flag with Skovlunds Mas Guapo and Siril Helljesen and Dorina will put their
best feet forward for Norway.
POLISHED POLISH PERFORMERS
Central Europe will be represented by two polished Polish performers, Katarzyna Milczarek with
Ekwador and Michal Rapcewicz with Randon, while there will be a real buzz around the Australian
partnership of Rachael Sanna and Jaybee Alabaster who have travelled all the way from the other
side of the globe to take their place on behalf of the Pacific League after winning the Asia/Pacific
FEI World Cup™ Dressage series.
American riders have only won the FEI World Cup™ Dressage title twice - Debbie McDonald and
the great mare, Brentina, claiming the honours at Gothenburg (SWE) in 2003 and Steffen Peters
nearly lifting the roof off the Thomas and Mack Arena in Las Vegas (USA) in 2009 when pinning
Isabell Werth and Satchmo into second spot with a fabulous performance from Ravel.
Jan Ebeling, riding Rafalca, and Shawna Harding with Come On III are the US representatives this
time around, and they will be intending to make their presence felt after the long trip across the
Atlantic Ocean.
But it seems that everyone else will have to raise their game to some considerable extent to stop
defending champions, Adelinde Cornelissen and Jerich Parzival, from enjoying yet another victory
gallop to celebrate winning the 2011/2012 Reem Acra FEI World Cup™ Dressage trophy.

REEM ACRA FEI WORLD CUP™ DRESSAGE FINAL
2011/2012
20 Apr 2012
CORNELISSEN WINS REEM ACRA FINAL GRAND PRIX by Louise Parkes
FIRST TO GO
First to go in today’s competition was Denmark’s Lone Joergensen who set a strong standard with
a lovely performance from the light-moving FBW de Vito for a score of 71.337.
Australia’s Rachael Sanna and Jaybee Alabaster will lead the way, while the defending champions
will start 15th of the 18 horse-and-rider combinations and will be a tough act for any of the others to
beat.

with a spectacular performance that left them a close second, while Italy's Valentina Truppa was
a huge hit with the packed stadium of spectators when finishing third with Ermo del Castegno.

As Ground Jury President, The Netherlands' Ghislain Fouarge, later confirmed, the level of
competition at the Brabanthallen was much improved in today's decider compared to yesterday's
Grand Prix. "Even the judges were a bit disappointed after yesterday's Grand Prix as most of the
competitors were not at their best, but it was completely different today," he said. A score of 86.250
clinched the title for Cornelissen, who went fourth from last in the field of 18 starters, and that put her
just over a single point ahead of runner-up Langehanenberg.
A convincing moment of action of winner Adelinde Cornelissen aboard Jerich Parzival
As a matter of fact, expectations rose as Isabell Werth entered the arena with El Santo FRH. It is 20
years since the 42-year-old rider and mother won her first FEI World Cup™ Dressage title showing
Fabienne, which she followed with a second 15 years later showing 'Hannes'.
Werth and El Santo remained out in front after the break until Langehanenberg turned the
competition on its head with a fabulous ride. Her 12-year-old stallion, Damon Hill, won the Reem
Acra FEI World Cup™ Dressage Western European League qualifier at Neumunster (GER) and
was runner-up in Amsterdam (NED) on the road to this weekend's seasonal finale. The stunningly
good-looking horse was on the button all the way today, with lovely piaffe, passage and pirouette
racking up high scores for a strong lead with a personal best mark of 85.214! Helen
Langehanenberg was very happy with her performance, although she sadly missed her teamcoach
Holger Schmezer whom she believed to be her personal mentor as well as he always had a strong
belief in her performances, she said afterwards. Helen relies on her husband Sebastian
Langehanenberg at shows, who always accompanies her to the lessons from trainer Balkenhol.
During the WC Final her trainer Klaus Balkenhol was there in person as he was training British
Laura Bechtolsheimer in Great-Britain while he also kept an eye on his daughter Annabel who has
her first start in the outdoor season next week in Hagen.

Memorial start of 27th Reem Acra FEI WC Final
April 20 2012
Dear Marta Fusetti,
Text by Claartje van Andel and Louise Parks
The Reem Acra FEI WC Final dressage in ’s-Hertogenbosch had a quite devastating start this
afternoon after the message about the sudden dead of German teamcoach Holger Schmezer was
landed. The order of start with the best competitors in the beginning didn’t make it better either,
while even the acceptance of title defender Jerich Parzival at the second vet check hardly could
make it more happy.
So the Grand Prix had the highlights at the start. Quite a remarkable mistake occurred when
Jerich Parzival made a halt at the centreline instead of a piaffe. Adelinde explained: “It was the
background music that suddenly stopped and that made Parzival think it was the end of the test!”
For Adelinde it was ‘a hell of a night’ as she called it, with not to good sleeping because of the
uncertainty of the vet check. Adelinde shared her lack of sleep with her German colleagues who
had been sitting together in sadness in the hotel last night.

The presentation ceremony was tinged with great sadness as the riders and spectators stood for a
minute’s silence as a mark of respect, quit impressive and emotional. Pictures Julia Rau
At the post-competition press conference, Helen Langehanenberg explained that the she and her
fellow-German competitors, Isabell Werth and Nadine Capellmann, sat together well into the night
discussing whether they should withdraw from the Final under the circumstances. “It was really
hard for everyone - completely unexpected. In the end it was our opinion that Holger would want
us to ride - that was his aim, why he came here, so we had to do it for him,” she said.
As the second start Cornelissen and Parzival swept into the lead and didn’t let their position go.
The rider, who took two gold medals at last year’s FEI European Dressage Championships in
Rotterdam admitted afterwards that her horse may be a bit ring-rusty because she lacked rhythm
as Parzival only did two shows this winter.

Defending champions, The Netherlands‘ Adelinde Cornelissen and Jerich Parzival, on their way to
victory in the Grand Prix at the Reem Acra FEI World Cup™ Dressage Final 2011/2012 at
‘s-Hertogenbosch (NED) this afternoon.
Germany’s Isabell Werth was third into the arena and there was a buzz of excitement as her
11-year-old gelding, El Santo NRW, registered high scores in the early stages of his test. But,
following a big spook toward the end of the extended canter, the scores began to deteriorate and
this partnership completed with 69.802, which was only good enough for 10th in the final analysis.
“I was so sorry for the mistake, but
we are two living beings, and it is what it is!” she added. And her score of 76.125 would mark her
as the runner up.

Valentina Truppa impressed with her riding
Great Britain’s Richard Davison finished fifth following yet another classic display of professional
riding. He steered Hiscox Artemis through his movements with a veteran’s touch to put 73.374 on
the scoreboard, while Sweden’s Patrik Kittel claimed sixth place with Toy Story who showed some
flashes of brilliance during his
test.
America’s Jan Ebeling (Rafalca) and Shawna Harding (Come On III) undermined their chances by
mis-timing their entry into the arena and were subsequently penalised with the deduction of
all-important points. But all riders will compete again in tomorrow’s decisive Freestyle to Music
which begins at 14.00 local time.
Australia’s Rachael Sanna and Jaybee Alabaster will lead the way, while the defending champions
will start 15th of the 18 horse-and-rider combinations and will be a tough act for any of the others
to beat.

‘S-HERTOGENBOSCH, Netherlands, April 20–Adelinde Cornelissen spent a sleepless night worried
about a veterinary re-inspection but it did not stop her from claiming victory on her Jerich Parzival in the
World Cup Final Grand Prix Friday serving notice that the pair are focused on repeating as champions for
the second year in a row.
The world’s top ranked partnership were so synchronized that when the background music in the arena
stopped as the pair were near the end of their final centerline of passage that Parzival halted and Adelinde
had to get him going again to finish in the right place.
Despite the mistake that she later joked about, the Dutch pair scored 78.024 per cent with Germany’s
Helen Langehanenberg on Damon Hill NRW second on 76.125 per ent and Italy’s Valentina Truppa on
Eremo del Castegna third on 75.106 per cent.
The death of the internationally popular German national dressage coach Holger Schmezer on the eve of
the Final cast a pall over the competition and the riders and officials paid tribute to him with a minute’s
silence in the arena at the end of the Grand Prix.
One of the riders who seemed deeply affected was Isabell Werth of Germany whose ride on El Santo NRW

contained several mistakes, including spooking twice at a television camera near a corner of the arena. The
two-time World Cup champion finished 10th with a score of 69.802 per cent.
And there was widespread criticism of the the open draw in which all 18 names were placed in a basket
and assigned a starting position by a draw regardless of world ranking as Adelinde and Parzival started
second when normally they would be in the final group, and Helen Langehanenberg and Damon Hill were
sixth to go.

Parzival, a 15-year-old KWPN chestnut gelding (Jazz x Fidora x Ulft) who, failed the veterinary check
Thursday and had to return for a veterinary re-inspection Friday, just three hours before the start of the
Grand Prix, but it passed with no questions.
Adelinde said after the Grand Prix that she was still a little rusty as the pair have competed only twice in
the past four months, at the World Cup qualifiers in Mechelen, Belgium, and in Amsterdam.
“We don’t have the rhythm yet,” she said.
She said she still did not know why the horse failed the first vet check, but thought that it might be because
Parzival was “being stupid and biting.” She rode the horse later Thursday to see if she could feel anything
wrong, but could feel nothing.
“It was a hell of a night,” Adelinde said. “It was not the best preparation. I could have used a few more
hours of sleep.”

The format of the draw was re-introduced to dressage this year with the aim, according to Trond Asmyr,
dressage director at the International Equestrian Federation, that all entrants in the World Cup Final
should have an equal opportunity in the starting order for the Grand Prix. The results of the Grand Prix
determine the starting order for the Freestyle which decides the World Cup.
Adelinde was the first to be asked about the draw.
“I prefer the draw in which I am in the last group,” she said.
Gerrit-Jan Swinkels, the organizer of the ‘s-Hertogenbosch competition, said: ”in my oinion, it’s very bad.
This way is not a good way.”
Spectators, he cited as an example, left the stands after Adelinde’s ride to go shopping rather than fill the
arena for the final group.”

TWO USA RIDERS IN WORLD CUP LATE INTO COMPETITION ARENA

‘S-HERTOGENBOSCH, Netherlands, April 20–Both United States riders–Jan Ebeling and Shawna
Harding–were late entering the competition arena at the World Cup Final Grand Prix Friday, costing
them valuable points.
The judges, spectators and media were perplexed at the tardiness of the American combinations, both of
whom have competed at previous World Cup Finals.

Timer above the center of the competition arena
counting down seconds for entry.
The brightly lit stadium has a giant scoreboard above the arena and the clock counts down 45 seconds
from the time the president of the ground jury, Leif Tornblad of Denmark, rang the bell.
The U.S. also has two officials assigned to the dressage squad, team coach Anne Gribbons and Chef
d’Equipe Eva Salomon.
Late entry costs the combination 14 points, two each from the seven judges as this is a championship and
has two judges more than the usual five-person panel.
The Americans were the only riders late into the arena, prompting many jokes around the arena about jet
lag, being on U.S. time and references to Rolex being the official sponsor of the jumping World Cup Final
but not dressage–though large Rolex clocks decorate the stadium.
Shawna of Aiken, South Carolina, and Come On III, who competed at the 2011 Final in Leipzig, scored
68.055 per cent for 13th place.
She was the 16th rider in the competition and the first of the two Americans. The pair were several second
late into the arena.
Jan of Moorpark, California, and Rafalca, the horse he rode at the World Cup Finals in Las Vegas in 2009
and Leipzig, Germany, in 2011, scored 65.258 per cent, to finish 17th in the field of 18.
The combination was the last and when the countdown clock reached zero and the pair had not yet
entered the arena, a buzz began among the spectators.
All 18 combinations move on to the Freestyle that determines the World Cup, to be held Saturday.

‘S-HERTOGENBOSCH, Netherlands, April 21–Adelinde Cornelissen rode Jerich Parzival on Saturday to their second World Cup
victory, but said the horse was not yet in top form as the Olympics in London this summer were the highest priority.
The Dutch combination won the only annual global championship in dressage for the second straight year, just one percentage
point ahead of the dramatically spectacular German combination of Helen Langehanenberg and Damon Hill NRW.
Adelinde and the 15-year-old KWPN chestnut gelding (Jazz x Fidora x Ulft) who are ranked No. 1 in the world were scored at
86.250 per cent. Helen and Damon Hill were at 85.214 per cent for second with Valentina Truppa on Eremo del Castegno third
on 81.232 per cent. The scores for the second and third placed combinations were personal bests.
A sold out stadium of 9,500 spectators cheered the victory that Adelinde said was important to defend the title she won a year ago
in Leipzig, Germany, before her home crowd.
She said she was happy with the result because, “I’m not at 100 per cent. We are focused on our training for London. We tried to
reach a little peak here.”
On the way to London, she will compete at two observation trials–the Dutch championships and the Rotterdam CHIO–and may
take in another show.

Ghislain Fouarge, president of the seven-member ground jury, said that Helen and the 12-year-old Westfalen gelding (Donnerhall
x Romanz x Rubinstein I) “can easily beat” Adelinde and Parzival if she changed her freestyle to a higher degree of difficulty.
“All three did a top job,” the Dutch judge said. “They were three completely different riders and three completely different horses
but all were top quality.”
Valentina, wearing her now usual Italian Carabinieri uniform, had the crowd clapping along to her ride on Eremo del Castegna to
Italian music.
She will compete at the London Games on the 11-year-old Italian bred-gelding (Rohdiamant x Weltgirl x Weltmeyer) on whom
she posted a personal best score at this World Cup.
The spetators also warmly applauded Polish rider Katarzyna Milczarek who was eliminted when her horse, Ekwador, was seen to
have a cut apparently from a spur on its side and blood was clearly visible.
Ghislain Fouarge as the president of the ground jury who eliminated the pair said he did not at first see the blood on the side of
the horses until it passed in front of him.
The International Equestrian Federation is considering uniform rules to be applied to all all international disciplines.

Cornelissen Wins Reem Acra Final Grand Prix

Cup™ Dressage Final 2011/2012 at ‘sHertogenbosch (NED). Photo by FEI/Kit Houghton
The defending champions, Adelinde Cornelissen and
her mighty chestnut gelding Jerich Parzival, swept to
victory in the Grand Prix at the Reem Acra FEI World
Cup™ Dressage Final in ‘s-Hertogenbosch, The
Netherlands this afternoon. And the 32-year-old Dutch
rider was much relieved that she could live up to
expectations on her home turf after a long and restless
night.
But as Cornelissen admitted after heading the field, “it wasn’t the best
preparation – and I could maybe have slept a few more hours last night!”
“It was really hard
for everyone – completely unexpected. In the end it was our opinion that Holger would want us to
ride – that was his aim, why he came here, so we had to do it for him,” she said.
FIRST TO GO
First to go in today’s competition was Denmark’s Lone Joergensen who set a strong standard with
a lovely performance from the light-moving FBW de Vito for a score of 71.337.
“There is always background music, and today as we were doing the piaffe
the music stopped, so he thought he was finished – I had to tell him, No!
“I was really happy with him!” the rider said of her handsome
stallion. “He was brilliant at the start – he did lovely piaffe and passage, but sadly at the end there
was a mistake, but he is so motivated and willing!” she said. “I was so sorry for the mistake, but we
are two living beings, and it is what it is!” she added. And her score of 76.125 would prove plenty
good enough for runner-up spot.
SURPRISED
Valentina Truppa was surprised to find herself in third. “I didn’t expect to be in the top three,” she
said. “My horse was really good and very concentrated – he’s not usually at his best indoors!”, she
pointed out after racking up 75.106 to place herself well ahead of The Netherlands’ Hans Peter
Australia’s Rachael Sanna and Jaybee Alabaster will lead the way, while the defending champions
will start 15th of the 18 horse-and-rider combinations and will be a tough act for any of the others to
beat.

QUOTES
Adelinde Cornelissen, when asked if she will be riding a new Freestyle programme tomorrow – “a
lot of people are asking me about that – I’m working on a new one, but still riding my old one.”
Adelinde Cornelissen, talking about Jerich Parzival at yesterday’s first horse inspection – “I don’t
know what happened. He was stupid and fighting during the vet check, but I got on him and he was
fine. I wanted it (the re-inspection) to be done right away – it was a helluva night waiting last night but
he passed this morning!”

World Cup dressage title to Adelinde Cornelissen and
Parzival
By Louise Parkes on Apr 22, 2012 in Featured, News
Defending champions Adelinde Cornelissen and
Jerich Parzival clinched the Reem Acra FEI World
Cup Dressage title for the second consecutive
season when topping the Freestyle on home turf in
‘s-Hertogenbosch in The Netherlands last night.
But Germany’s Helen Langehanenberg really
pressured the dominant Dutch duo with a
spectacular performance that left them a close
second, while Italy’s Valentina Truppa was a huge
hit with the packed stadium of spectators when
finishing third with Ermo del Castegno.
As Ground Jury President, The Netherlands‘
Ghislain Fouarge, later confirmed, the level of
competition at the Brabanthalle was much
improved in the decider. “The judges were a bit
disappointed after yesterday’s Grand Prix, and
Adelinde was not at her best, but it was completely
different today,” he said. A score of 86.250
clinched the title for Cornelissen, who went fourth
from last in the field of 18 starters, and that put her
just over a single point ahead of runner-up
Langehanenberg.
Australia’s Rachael Sanna and Jaybee Alabaster
set the standard with a score of 71.339 when first
Adelinde Cornelissen and Jerich Parzival
to go, but were immediately overtaken by Finland’s
claimed the Reem Acra FEI World Cup
Mikaela Lindh and Skovlunds Mas Guapo who put
Dressage
title for the second year in a row in
71.696 on the board. For Poland’s Katarzyna

Milczarek there was deep disappointment when
Houghton.
Fourage stopped the test to tell her that her horse
had blood on his flank, and was therefore
eliminated. The Dutch judge said afterwards that
“it’s always sad to eliminate somebody, but no-one wants to see blood on the horse”.
Fourth to go was the USA’s Jan Ebeling who lifted the atmosphere again with a crowd-pleasing
performance from Rafalca, but a mark of 69.875 would not challenge the leaders. Three horses
later, Germany’s Isabell Werth and El Santo NRW certainly did. It is 20 years since the 42-year-old
rider won her first FEI World Cup Dressage title, which she followed with a second 15 years later,
and with her usual flourish she made her entry into the arena and set to work with conviction today.
They remained out in front after the break until Langehanenberg
turned the competition on its head with a fabulous ride. Her 12year-old stallion, Damon Hill, won the Western European
League qualifier at Neumunster in Germany and was runner-up
in Amsterdam on the road to this weekend’s seasonal finale,
and the stunningly good-looking horse was on the button all the
way, with lovely piaffe, passage and pirouette racking up high
scores for a strong lead with a mark of 85.214.
Werth, and Denmark’s Lone Joergensen, were the only two
riders to wear safety helmets instead of top hats in the final.
Judge at C Fouarge said afterwards, “Helen is a very elegant
rider and can easily beat Adelinde at the moment if everything
goes OK,” and Cornelissen admitted that, having seen the
German rider’s performance, she realised she had to raise her
game. But she thanked her rival for putting her under pressure.
“I knew I had to really sharpen him (Jerich Parzival) up,” she
said. And a “sharpened up” version of her extraordinary chestnut gelding is a formidable sight at
the best of times.
With consummate ease the pair began their floor-plan and it was clear their score would be right up
there as the horse drummed out the amazing passage and piaffe that have become his trademark
to the beat of his now very familiar musical score. There was a tiny bit of indecision at the very end,
but as Cornelissen explained afterwards, the horse took matters into his own hands – or hooves in
his case. “After the piaffe/pirouette I was doubting a bit, so Parzival said what do you want me to to
do? Make up your mind! – so he decided!” And as the judges awarded them 86.250 they
surpassed Langehanenberg and put the result beyond doubt.
But the excitement wasn’t quite over yet. As show organiser Frank Kempermann pointed out later,
the Brabanthalle was packed to capacity with 9500 people who were enjoying every moment of the
Freestyle action. And, last to go, Italy’s Valentina Truppa and Eremo del Castegno brought the
competition to a perfect conclusion with a test so full of life that the spectators roared with delight as
she saluted the judges for the final time.
As Truppa said afterwards, “people were singing to some of the songs – this type of music is happy
and good for the public – it’s a combination of an Italian rider, an Italian horse and Italian music!”,
and they could hardly have brought the final to a better conclusion as Truppa became the third rider
to score above 80 percent, putting 81.232 on the board for third place. Talking about the uniform
she wears, Truppa said: “it is the uniform of the Carabinieri which is a gendarmerie, there is a
sports team and I am a member of the dressage team … there are also riders in eventing and
dressage”.
The judging panel comprised: At K, Stephen Clarke (GBR); E, Susie Hoevenaars (AUS); H, Leif
Tornblad (DEN); C, Ghislain Fouarge NED) President; M, Katrina Wuest (GER); B, Isabelle Judet
(FRA); and at F, Gary Rockwell (USA).
But Cornelissen believes that Parzival has more improvement to come ahead of this summer’s
Olympic Games in London. She intends to compete with him at the Dutch Championships in
Hoofddorp and Rotterdam in preparation for that, but if Langehanenberg takes Fouarge’s advice
then the German may well give the new double-champion a run for her money in three months’ time.
But it was Cornelissen who had the style to record the 12th Dutch victory in the 27-year history of the
FEI World Cup Dressage series which now goes forward into its third year of sponsorship by New
York fashion designer, Reem Acra, in 2012/2013.

So manches Pferd
Was will Chefrichter Ghislain Fouarge denn noch sehen,
