On these pages, views of the complex, dynamic and inter-disciplinary design that aims to illustrate a key concept: stunning yet subtle, refined and balanced elegance made up of precious materials brought to life by natural and artificial light. The core of the design is the majestic chandelier in Barovier & Toso Murano glass, which extends throughout the boutique. Another important element, the lift (above) represents the backbone of the space, tangible and dramatic, imposing and light In apertura, dettaglio del bassorilievo in gesso su cui campeggia la Pantera, icona della Maison. Fulcro del progetto Il maestoso lampadario in vetro di Murano Barovier & Toso che attraversa l'intera boutique come l'ascensore (sopra), materico e scenografico, imponente e leggero al tempo stesso, vera e propria colonna vertebrale dello spazio The 19th-century building between via Montenapoleone and via Gesù has been home to the Cartier boutique for over thirty years, an established place in the rectangle of fashion that reopened its doors last October following nine months of renovation works that saw the space completely refurbished, bringing it on a par with the boutiques of Rue de la Paix in Paris, New Bond Street in London and Fifth Avenue in New York and transforming it into a Temple of the Maison. The renovation project saw the demolition of all previous floors, preserving just the external covering and the roof of the building, creating a single space with no interior limits in which Bruno Moinard, the Norman architect who since 2004 has been entrusted with the concept design of all Cartier boutiques worldwide, was able to reinterpret the space in harmony with the French Maison's values. Upon entering, attention is drawn immediately to the vertical nature of the space. Three elements characterise the floor to ceiling project, first of all the Barovier & Toso Murano glass chandelier: already a feature of the boutique prior to the renovation, although it has been enlarged and its shape altered, it represents continuity of the tra- |73 Da più di trentanni l'edificio ottocentesco che sorge a Milano rra via Monienapoleone e via Gesù ospita la boutique Carrier, presenza consolidala del quadrilatero della moda che ha riaperto i battenti lo scorso ottobre dopo nove mesi di cantiere che hanno permesso di rinnovare completamente lo spazio elevandolo, al pari delle boutiques di Rue de la Paix a Parigi, New Bond Street a Londra e J'ifth Avenue a New York, a Tempio della Maison. The chandelier extends throughout the boutique and is framed by structural glass parapets on each floor that also serve as suspended display counters which heighten visitors' perception of spatial continuity on each floor. The second element is the lift, the real backbone of the space and the stunning background of the entrance area. The lift "consists of a structural glass double "shell" with an internal brass structure capable of creating many different atmospheres by means of the natutal light that filters from the roof, also glass" according to Gabtiele Cervetta, store planner and visual merchandising manager for Cartier Italy. "It is an element that is imposing yet delicate at the same time, an element that emanates material force. The lift is surrounded by The luminous interiors spread over four levels draw light from the glass façade, the lighting design and sustainable LED sources. Right, on the third floor, a domestic, exclusive and private space has been fitted out with a waiting room, a dining room and a living room. The staircase is accompanied by the third element: a plaster bas-relief of a panther, icon of the Maison that gives the impression of accompanying visitors, leading them on a journey to the last floor, heart of the space, where the feline can finally rest. On all floors, the material of the coverings and decorations used is a fundamental part of the project, telling of a whispered luxury in which elements that offer a certain continuity throughout the space are intetpreted by using finishings that ttansmit Cartier's values by relating to the products on display: for example, oak can be found on the ground floor, silver pine on the first floor housing the Bridal area, brown leather in the area dedicated to watches and golden sctaped oak in the VIP room. The finishings are complimented by materials that render the space sinuous and welcoming. On the last, exclusive and private floor, a domestic space has been fitted out where a waiting room, a dining room and a living room can be found.
