PROGRAM NOTES:
This Rhapsody, number 40/ 41 of the Slovak Melodies for Children, is based on two songs—Hey, Blow You
Summer Wind and Hey, What a Beautiful House. Bartok skillfully meshed them to create a composition for
piano, and I have arranged the piece for solo Horn, with the idea that frequently the songs were collected
unaccompanied, so playing them solo is a kind of return to their source.---W.K.

“No. 40. is a shepherd’s song (velaska, also known as detvanska [from the village of Detva, in the Zvolen
district of Slovakia]), probably dating back to ancient times. The autochthonous Slovak structure consists of
an improvisation–like-melody made up of six-syllable text lines, in parlando-rubato (that is, free) rhythm.
