Why satellite for TLC (1)
• Broad Satellite Coverages allow to extend the networks over
large areas well beyond the borders of each country
• Links independent from terrestrial infrastructure
and geological conditions
• Networks easily expandable:
adding a new site only implies to install a new terminal at the
site
• Reduced investment risk

terminal equipment and satellites are redunded
• Easy implementation of Multicast and Broadcast transmissions
• Satellite links are broadband and therefore allow high
information rates

– Antennas: Combined Tx/Rx Beam Forming Networks,
gridded reflectors, shaped reflectors, Sunshields,

dielectric DEMUX’s, cooled LNAs
– Satellite platforms: Larger structures able to support higher
mass, increasing solar array power and battery

Bi-directional Satellite communication Networks
Network Topologies: Star
with one hop on the satellite each node of the
network can access only the centre of the star.
To connect two nodes two hops are necessary.
Positive: Low cost Terminal (2 K€), small dimension,
Standard Multi-TXp-Multi-Satellite Network.
Negative: Double satellite latency, limited
upstreaming.

Star Multimedia Platform
The receive sites are equipped with transmit/receive
terminals connected to PC or LAN. The receiver of the
terminal de-embeds the IP contents of DVB/IP
channels transmitted from the satellite.
The transmitter of the terminal transforms the IP
stream in TDMA bursts that are transmitted via
satellite to the Hub station connected to the platform.
The position of the burst in the TDMA frame is given
by the hub.
Both Forward and Return Channels are broadband

DAMA (Demand Assignment Multiple Access)
Systems
Based on MF-TDMA technology: each terminal
transmits and receives in TDMA bursts assigned ondemand by the Network Control Centre (NCC). Burst
duration is automatically changed according to
terminal needs and available capacity.

SkyplexData
The terminals encapsulate the IP streams into MPEG2 streams and transmit them to the satellite. Skyplex
“On Board Processing” demodulates the SCPC
signals,multiplexes the contributions from all the
terminals and modulates a carrier which is retransmitted to all the terminals of the network. The
connections between the terminals are established on
the basis of PIDs and IP addresses.
