RESEARCH: ORGANISATION, ACTIVITIES AND RESULTS
The Università degli Studi di Genova (UNIGE) was established in 1933 by Regio Decreto n.1592.
The University of Genoa is among Italian’s leading research universities with an international reputation of world class
research across a wide range of disciplines. UNIGE consists of 50 Departments, 11 Faculties, 23 Research Centres
and 2 Centres of Excellence.
UNIGE’s research personnel consists of 1572 academics and 1382 administrative and technical staff, of which 5 top
management executives. Central administration services include the Research Office, which assist academics and
administrative personnel of Departments in the preparation, submission and management of research projects
(http://www.unige.it/ricerca/).
The University of Genoa has a strong participation both in EC Framework Programmes (over 100 projects in FP5,
92 projects in FP6 and over 40 projects currently running in FP7) and in other important European and international
research and cooperation programmes (153 projects for the period 2000-2009 – European Structural Funds, Life
Programme, Bilateral Scientific Cooperation, etc.).
UNIGE has a synergic collaboration with the “Italian Institute of Technology – IIT” (http://www.iit.it), whose aim is to
promote excellence in research in Italy by attracting to Genova the brightest researchers in a variety of scientific
disciplines.
Discoveries, inventions, advances achieved by research activities are successfully commercialized.
In an increasingly competitive context the University of Genoa considers its research funding monitoring and selecting
interesting opportunities (including measures for the mobility of human resources) highly important to improve its
placement both at national and international level.
In 2008 UNIGE’s research funding amounted to about 50 million euros from external sources, besides about
3 million euros of additional own funding.
