DISS ETH NO. 21152 ESSAYS ON INNOVATION, VENTURE CAPITAL AND ENTREPRENEURSHIP A dissertation submitted to ETH ZURICH for the degree of Doctor of Sciences Presented by BORIS BATTISTINI M.Res., King’s College–University of London Born December 17, 1982 Citizen of Italy Accepted on the recommendation of Professor Dr Pius Baschera Professor Dr Stefano Brusoni Dr Fredrik Hacklin 2013 Essays on Innovation, Venture Capital and Entrepreneurship ABSTRACT A wave of entrepreneurs, technological advancements, and venture capital investments unleashed new models of business innovation. In a climate of macroeconomic uncertainty, fundamentally defined by the shifting distribution of global economic activity, this combination has proved remarkably effective at creating value and innovation. Innovation has thus become a (more) distributed activity across an increasingly wide range of actors. The broadening of the innovation process beyond the traditional boundaries of the firm challenges strategic thinking and long-established business models in important ways. Against this background, this cumulative dissertation seeks to advance our understanding of salient features of new models of innovation within a multilevel perspective, to employ a variety of research methodologies, and to provide new theoretical and empirical insights, including results that inform managerial practice. To this end, this dissertation is formed of four essays that explore research questions at the nexus of innovation, venture capital and entrepreneurship. The first essay examines the state of corporate venturing activities and practices across industrial sectors. The analysis provides an overview of the strategic scope of venturing activities for parent corporations, the organization of corporate venture units, the financial and strategic performance of these units, and the associated operational challenges. The second essay analyzes the role of corporate venture capital activities for early stage life science innovation, advancing the understanding of the behavior of corporations as strategic investors in the market for biotech ventures. The results of the study also contribute to the current debate on the future of innovation in the pharmacology industry. The third essay investigates the dynamics of technological convergence and the associated opportunities for strategic innovation and entrepreneurial market entry. The forth and final essay address the issue of exploiting advanced technological systems to engage physically dispersed employees in collective problem solving, ideation and project execution. The essay recognizes such technologies as critical enablers of innovation activities and the role of emergent leadership for the effective functioning and coordination of interaction processes towards intended organizational tasks. Together, the four essays provide new empirical and theoretical insights on strategic and organizational issues that are at the forefront of emerging innovation models, and also analyze and discuss the implications for practice. Page / 6
