Sarteano is 573 m a.s.l. and has less than 5000 inhabitants. It is located in Tuscany in the province of Siena. The town
has historic and environmental importance, and a medieval past documented by an important castle and numerous
churches.
Traces of an Etruscan past are hinted at by some remarkable necropolis such as the one located in Piannace which has in
recent times revealed numerous amazing discoveries such as the incredible tomb of the Quadriga Infernale with its vivid
colourful pictures.
In more recent times the area was subjected to armed conflicts between the Republics of Siena and Florence.
In 1228 the Orvieto Militia occupied the area but from 1337 political control was assumed by Perugia before once again
coming under the control of Florence in 1359.
This rich history is documented by the beautiful and original architecture of the territory.
The Castle of Sarteano evolved to become ever stronger and more robust during these extended periods of hostility, able
to push back Ladislao the King of Naples as well as the mercenaries of Perugia lead by Jacopo Piccinino in 1455.
The town hall and the Palazzo Gabrielli are also particularly noteworthy from a historic and architectonic point of view.
However the main attraction remains the castle of Sarteano, with its double outer walls which rendered it a true citadel
able to resist the most ferocious and sustained attacks even from more modern weapons such as bombards and the earliest
matchlock rifles. Underground tunnels connected the castle to the outside territory and connected to the main entrances
of the structure.
