The 16th-century Villa of Maser, declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1996, is a magical place. An extraordinary concentration of art, culture and landscape in which the works of three leading artists of the time find perfect harmony: Andrea Palladio, who in the 16th century revolutionised the way of architecture was conceived; Paolo Caliari, aka il Veronese, a great master of the Venetian Renaissance, with his extraordinary gift for painting light, which here reached new heights; and Alessandro Vittoria, a sculptor who trained in the workshop of Sansovino and has left memorable examples of his work in Venice. At Maser, he was responsible for designing and largely realising the overall stucco decoration. Designed by Andrea Palladio, probably from 1550 onwards, for Daniele Barbaro, a humanist, and his brother Marcantonio Barbaro, an ambassador of the Republic of Venice, the building was created by converting the old medieval castle on the family’s estate into a splendid country house suited to the study of the arts and intellectual contemplation. Nestling in the hills amidst the vineyards near Asolo, the spectacular Veneto villa – boasting a splendid nymphaeum with sculptures by Vittoria, together with a Palladian tempietto (the last work of the great architect responsible for the Teatro Olimpico), and complemented by rustic outhouses – preserves all the charm of its original use: a refined oasis of art and knowledge and also a farm, which is still lived in by the owners, who produce celebrated wines in the historic winery. The villa is located halfway up a hill, not far from a spring, which according to tradition was a place of worship and perhaps even the site of a temple. Palladio cleverly exploited the location and topography of the land, inserting a series of major innovations and thereby defining a new style of country house with his Villa di Maser. For the first time in the 16th-century, the main residential building and the barchesse or outbuildings associated with estate activities, were aligned in a single compact architectural unit. The central part actually stands well forward of the wings on either side, but when viewed frontally seems to fit smoothly into a single colonnaded facade, while a particularly dynamic effect is evident from the slightly curving road at the foot of the hill. With a technological feat worthy of his reputation, and drawing on the skills of ancient Rome, Palladio dug into the hill to create a nymphaeum with a fishpond, from which, thanks to a sophisticated hydraulic system, water is piped into the service areas of the building and then reaches the gardens and orchard. Two winged figures support the Barbaro arms at the key to the vault in the nymphaeum archway, which gives access to the grotto and spring. There are considerable differences when compared to Palladio’s other works, and this can be explained in part by the relationship between the architect and his exceptional clients: it is certainly Daniele Barbaro, Patriarch of Aquileia, a leading humanist and scholar of philosophy, mathematics, optics, botany and translator of Vitruvius, and Marcantonio, a politician, administrator and refined connoisseur of architecture, who made several study trips in Rome with Palladio himself. They visited the ancient monuments with the intent to conceive together the future Villa di Maser with its humanistic and sacred meanings. Within the villa, Paolo Veronese created what is his most famous decoration, today considered one of the most extraordinary fresco cycles of the Venetian Cinquecento. The cycle unfolds in six rooms on the first floor of the villa (the socalled piano nobile), adapting perfectly to the rhythmic play of space and light characterising Andrea Palladio’s elegant interiors. The extraordinary force and quality of the illusionistic space overlying Palladio’s architectural space highlight the close spiritual and cultural affinity between decoration and architectural design, and is probably the result of careful direction by the cultured patrons, who together with the artists drew up an overall unified plan for the villa’s frescos, focussing on the harmony of the cosmos, governed by Divine Wisdom expressed by love, peace and fortune. Qui le immagini lasciano trasparire la sua capacità di rendere vivi e vitali anche le raffigurazioni più In this context, Veronese clearly felt anything but constrained by the dictates of the iconographic commission, giving free rein to his imagination and achieving one of the high points of his figurative poetry at Maser. Here the images reveal his ability to bring even the most complex representations to life “in a dazzling blaze of 9 VILLA MASER vs 8:Q Brochure arbiq 16-10-2013 8:28 Pagina 10 Sala dell’Olimpo Particolare della volta con ritratto della Signora Barbaro Detail of the ceiling with the portrait of Lady Barbaro Sala di Bacco Bacco dona l’uva ai pastori Bacchus presents the grape to the shepherds Giustina Giustiniani, moglie di Marcantonio Barbaro, vestita con un elegantissimo abito azzurro impreziosito di broccati argento e oro, si affaccia da una loggia, nella Sala dell’Olimpo, con accanto la vecchia nutrice e il piccolo cagnolino bianco e bruno. Giustina Giustiniani, the wife of Marcantonio Barbaro, in an elegant blue dress decorated with silver and gold brocade, looking down from a loggia in the Sala dell’Olimpo, with her old nurse and little white and brown pet dog next to her. Opposite, Veronese has also immortalised her two children. Veronese loved his work here to such a point that he has left a self-portrait within the frescos. In the Sala dell’Olimpo, at the heart of the architectural complex, the painter depicts the mythological gods along with Divine Wisdom, but there are also allegories of the four elements and the four seasons and images of a decorative nature in a classical taste. These are frescos of extraordinary force, in which Veronese drew on the early sources of Tuscan and Emilian mannerism with a nod towards a more direct and vital realism, evident in the paintings in the lower part of the ceiling – among which we can see Giustiniana Giustiniani, Marcantonio Barbaro’s wife – and in the landscapes taken from life. In the Sala a crociera, eight splendid figures of young, beautiful musicians painted as though they were statues appear in a series of niches, together with a series of landscapes which interact with those that can be seen from the windows, and the image of a page boy and a girl emerging from painted doors as if to meet the visitor. 12 The Allegory of Bacchus dominates the first of the two rooms facing south, the Stanza di Bacco, while the Allegory of marital devotion forms the subject of the frescos in the next room, the Tribunale dell’Amore. Finally, opposite the nymphaeum, we find the so-called Stanza del Cane – which owes its name to a small dog painted on the left-hand wall as one enters – and the Stanza della Lucerna, both of which dedicated to Christian iconographic elements. Paolo Veronese’s commission for Maser proved a decisive experience for the artist: as Pignatti noted, “His use of colour reveals itself in all its detached and harmonious classicism”. With great freedom, in the Barbaro's villa the last great exponent of the Italian Renaissance developed influences from the Roman mannerist world, achieving that Olympian classicism of line and colour in the clear clarity of the Palladian interiors which, combined, pointed the way to his full maturity. The villa is situated in the heart of the Montello e Colli Asolani D.O.C. wine region which includes the hills to the south of the Dolomites, to the west of the Piave river in the province of Treviso, in northern Veneto. Today the grapes for the ancient winery are grown in accordance with strict regulations governing eco-compatible agriculture across the 30 hectares of carefully selected vineyards at the heart of the 230 hectare estate that surrounds the villa. The vineyards are cultivated with high density techniques in order to obtain a very low yield per plant. Particular care is taken in ensuring the ideal proportion of 1.2 square meters of green surface per kilogram of grape produced. The traditional varieties of Prosecco, Verduzzo, Manzoni Bianco, Chardonnay, Merlot, Cabernet are hand picked and then processed with the utmost attention under the direction of Dr.Donato Lanati, researcher and teacher at the University of Turin, to provide elegant wines that express the personality of the highly vocated terroir of northern Veneto. 14 VILLA MASER vs 8:Q Brochure arbiq 16-10-2013 8:29 Pagina 15 Informazioni per la visita Visiting information Sede/Venue Villa Maser Via Cornuda, 7 31010 Maser (TV) Informazioni e prenotazioni/Information and booking Tel. +39 0423 923004 Fax +39 0423 923002 www.villadimaser.it [email protected] Apertura al pubblico/Opening times Gennaio, Febbraio/January, February Sabato, domenica e festivi 11-17 Saturdays and Sundays 11 am – 5 pm Marzo/March Martedì, giovedì, sabato 10.30-18 Tuesdays,Thursdays, and Saturdays 10.30 am – 6 pm Domenica e festivi 11-18 Sundays and National Holidays 11 am – 6 pm Aprile, Maggio, Giugno/April, May, June Da martedì a sabato 10-18 From Tuesday to Saturday 10 am – 6 pm Domenica e festivi 11-18 Sundays and National Holidays 11 am – 6 pm Luglio, Agosto/July, August Martedì, giovedì, sabato 10.30-18 Tuesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays 10.30 am – 6 pm Domenica e festivi 11-18 Sundays and National Holidays 11 am – 6 pm Settembre, Ottobre/September, October Da martedì a sabato 10-18 From Tuesday to Saturday 10 am – 6 pm Domenica e festivi 11-18 Sundays and National Holidays 11 am – 6 pm Novembre, Dicembre/November, December Sabato, domenica e festivi 11-17 Saturdays, Sundays and National Holidays 11 am – 5 pm Chiuso/Closed Il giorno di Pasqua. 24,25,26 dicembre. 1 e 6 gennaio.
