PRESS RELEASE
Introducing the 6th TriestEspresso Expo
230 exhibitors from over 20 countries and a wide number of events scheduled
Paoletti: <The next Expo will also have a new location in 2014: Trieste’s Maritime Station>
Even more international, even more prestigious: TriestEspresso Expo has grown further. The
number-one international business-to-business exhibition of the espresso coffee trade
industry will be hosted from 25th to 27th October 2012 by the Montebello Exhibition Centre, being
organised by Aries – Chamber of Commerce of Trieste in cooperation with Assocaffè Trieste and
Trieste Coffee Cluster.
An international meeting point for visitors from 85 countries – brought to Trieste also thanks to a
special partnership with Lufthansa, official carrier of the event – TriestEspresso is above all an
occasion to showcase the quality of Italian-made espresso coffee and products: the 230
exhibitors do comprise many brands-icons of Italian quality. This year, however, will also see a
record number of exhibitors from producing countries. The opening conference will be a tribute
to them.
<The positive outcome of this exhibition will involve the entire local area, and will not be limited to
the city’s coffee industry – pointed out Antonio Paoletti, President of the Chamber of Commerce
of Trieste –. This will be the last expo to be hosted by the Montebello Exhibition Centre: the
2014 expo will be held at Trieste’s Maritime Station, whose warehouse 42 is currently being
renovated. This new location will enhance the event even more. The city and its institutions, the
Municipality and the Province of Trieste in particular, like us shareholders of Fiera Trieste Spa now
in liquidation, will hopefully cooperate with us in taking this event to always higher levels.>
<Trieste holds the number-one position as the main coffee-importing port. Only the GenoaSavona joint platform (but only considered as a whole and not as single ports) can overtake Trieste
– said Massimiliano Fabian, President of Associazione Caffè Trieste –. And TriestEspresso is a
key event to confirm once again that Trieste is the world capital of espresso coffee>.
The programme of the events of this sixth expo is very rich: information and training, culture and
leisure, and visits to famous coffee shops in the city centre. <Visitors may participate in a number

of certified training workshops promoted by Speciality Coffee Association Europe (SCAE),
organised in Trieste for the first time, to receive specialised training on subjects such as cup
tasting, latte art and green coffee – explained Patrizia Andolfatto, Director of Aries –. There will
be bartender competitions, in particular the 2nd Mitteleuropean Barista Open and the semi-finals of
the Café Bartenders Italian Championship. And also the celebrations of the centennial anniversary
of Gruppo Cimbali, photography exhibitions and presentations of books on the subject of coffee. In
addition, a few events will be held in local cafés, partially organised in cooperation with FIPE, to
get the locals involved in this great celebration of quality espresso coffee.>
<Let me just add another interesting fact to this expo by announcing that among the exhibitors
there will also be the company owned by Bob Marley’s son, Coffee Marley, which produces
Jamaica Blue Mountain coffee, a fine quality then roasted and packaged in the UK> concluded
Alessandro Sietti, Manager of the Trade Exhibitions Aries Department.

THE EXHIBITORS
The exhibition will host 230 registered exhibitors from over 21 countries, including prestigious
brands-icons: they will be the protagonists of the sixth TriestEspresso expo, the number-one
espresso coffee trade fair in the world, which has shown a growing trend also this year.
All the categories of the espresso industry will be represented: manufacturers of coffee machines,
roasting equipment, cups, accessories and packaging, as well as green coffee manufacturers,
importers, distributors, carriers, toasters. Of course, they also include the Italian quality brandsicons, because TriestEspresso is also an occasion to showcase the quality of Italian-made
espresso coffee and products.
The presence of producing countries will see a record number: India, Indonesia, Vietnam, Ivory
Coast, Tanzania, Burundi, Guatemala, El Salvador, Brazil, Jamaica and Colombia.

A JOURNEY THROUGH PRODUCING COUNTRIES
Opening Conference – The production and consumption trends in Brazil, Burundi, El Salvador,
Guatemala, India, Indonesia, Tanzania
Coffee producers are the first fundamental links of the chain: as a tribute, TriestEspresso will start
from them. The opening conference, scheduled for Thursday 25th October at 10 am in the
Congress Hall of pavilion H, will take a journey through some of the most representative
producing countries, described by the representatives of their respective Coffee Boards.
Coffee: from Trieste, a Journey Through Producing Countries will illustrate the recent
developments of those markets. The conference will focus on the factors determining the quality
and the quantity of the beans, the development lines in individual markets, the effects of the
current economic situation and future prospects. In addition, as those countries have been
increasingly acting as consumers too, a special focus will be devoted to this new relevant role
they play. Production and consumptions will therefore be the main topics discussed by the
speakers at the conference.
What about the stages of this unique journey? The first leg will take us to South-East Asia, in
Indonesia, a country that stands out for its huge volumes of Robusta coffee, but where a growing
– yet still minority – share of Arabica coffee has become relevant in the past few years. Priyo
Iswanto, Chargé d'Affaires of the Indonesian Embassy in Rome will present his report. Ricardo
Villanueva, Chairman of Anacafe will then take us to Guatemala to learn everything about the
world surrounding one of the coffees with the finest aroma; next, Yenugula Raghuramulu, Joint
Research Director of India’s Coffee Board, will take us back to the territory of a giant of Asian
coffee.
Then, the journey will take us back to Latin America, first to stop in Brazil, together with Vanusia
Nogueira, Executive Director of the Brazil Speciality Coffee Association, and Ivan Barbosa Netto,
Director of Exportaminas, and then in the interesting coffee plantations of El Salvador with
Benjamin Reinaldo Monge Ramos, Executive Director Advisor of the Consejo Salvadoreño del
Café.
A stop in Africa could not be missing: more specifically in Tanzania, with Adolph Kumburu,

General Director of the local Coffee Board, and in Burundi, together with Jean Faustin Niyibizi,

A conclusion speech will be given by Peter McGrath, Academy of Sciences for the Developing
World, who will dwell on the subject of skills creation on coffee research in producing countries, a
project promoted by TWAS together with World Coffee Research of Texas.

SCAE WORKSHOPS FOR THE FIRST TIME AT TRIESTESPRESSO
To learn about the art of tasting, how to decorate your cappuccino with latte art, and about green
beans
The SCAE professional training goes to TriestEspresso Expo for the first time: from 25th to 27th
October, Speciality Coffee Association Europe will organise certificated workshops and
educational sessions.
It will be a full programme for the three days of the Trieste event, offering training customised on
the needs of the industry operators, including toasters, buyers, bartenders and other
professional figures in the espresso coffee sector.
Thursday morning, 25th October will start with a workshop on how to start up your own espresso
bar, to go on with five hours of “cuptasting”, i.e. the fundamentals to learn how to taste and
perceive the quality and quantity differences in different types of coffee and to describe them
properly.
A brief introduction to cuptasting will also take place on 26th October, from 10.00 am to 1.00 pm. In
the afternoon, the green coffee system will be the focus of the workshop aiming to explain how
soil, height, temperature may affect the coffee in your cup, the seasonality of coffee, the plant life
cycle, working techniques, stocking and transport.
On the final day of the event, 27th October, cuptasting will be dealt with in an advanced module,
whereas the training programme will end, from 3.30 pm and 6.00 pm, with a workshop on latte art,
the trendiest way to decorate a cappuccino.
No theory and a lot of practice for another workshop, in addition to the SCAE programme and free
of charge, devoted to roasting, to take place on 25th October at 1.30 pm: Roberto Pedini,
Petroncini Impianti, will offer advice and instructions to have beans roasted at best.

TRIESTESPRESSO AND THE NATIONAL FIPE PARTNERSHIP
The conference “Coffee, payments and meal vouchers: a blessing and a curse for bar owners”
A tasting counter, both in the exhibition centre and in local bars, to taste and evaluate a cup of
coffee
A structured collaboration between TriestEspresso and the national FIPE, the Italian
Federation of Public Establishments, a member of Confcommercio Imprese per l’Italia, which
translates into initiatives addressed to operators in the field and the general public.
The operators are the addressees of the conference on “sensitive” issues “Coffee, payments and
meal vouchers: a blessing and a curse for bar owners”, which will take place Thursday 25th at
3.30 pm, in the Events area of pavilion H, to deal with four issues that are very relevant to any
bartender. Possible solutions in light of art. 62 of the so-called Deregulation decree in force from
24th October will be explained also to achieve a more transparent and balanced relation with
suppliers (toasters and equipment manufacturers, who are widely represented at TriestEspresso);
how to deal with the meal voucher issue, finding solutions to increase the business and the quality
of the offer; last but not least, promoting technical and professional updates. Speakers will include
Antonella Zimbelli, Fipe-Confcommercio Varese, toaster, Luciano Sbraga, Centro Studi FipeConfcommercio, Marcello Fiore, Fipe-Confcommercio, Managing Director.
For all the duration of the exhibition, still in pavilion H, in the FIPE area, from 10.30 am to 5.00 pm,
the specialised public will have a chance to attend “Tasting&Testing”, a true professional
tasting counter to improve the knowledge on the products.
The Tasting&Testing iniziative goes out of the pavilions and makes a foray into 14 selected cafés
in the city centre, members of FIPE (see list below), where all consumers asking for a coffee cup
will be asked to fill out a form devised thanks to Centro Studi Assaggiatori. The goal is to make the
customers examiners of the product and, at the same time, more aware on the quality of what they
drink.

FROM MUMAC, PRESTIGIOUS COFFEE MACHINES ON DISPLAY
Gruppo Cimbali is celebrating its centennial anniversary: 2012 TEE will host pieces from the newlyopened Mumac Museum in the exhibition area.
To celebrate its 100th anniversary, Gruppo Cimbali is taking to Trieste part of the newly-opened
museum of coffee machines, Mumac. In pavilion H, during the three-day exhibition, you will be
able to admire some of the coffee machines that made history in Italy, charming for their design
and groundbreaking for their technical innovation.
The temporary Mumac exhibition at TriestEspresso will be inaugurated with the presentation of the
museum “Mumac – the museum of coffee machines: a story that dates back to over 100 years
ago”, to take place Thursday 25th October at 2.45 pm in the Congress Hall, pavilion H.
Mumac, comprising over 200 bar espresso coffee machines, unites the Maltoni and Cimbali
collections. Enrico Maltoni’s collection is the widest and best preserved one at international level.
It comprises splendid coffee machines preserved from the wear of time. Next to the machines, the
museum is enriched with a historical archive comprising over 15,000 documents selected and
catalogued, which will be available to a public of researchers, a training room, a lab for sensory
tests and various spaces to host events and special projects.
“The museum celebrates the 100 years of activity of Gruppo Cimbali – said Maurizio Cimbali,
Chairman of the Group – a truly Italian story which has seen the Group becoming a world-leader in
four generations. The Mumac gathers and displays a summary of exceptional technological and
stylistic contents and constantly aims to contribute to the development of the culture of espresso
coffee and cappuccino in the world.”

TRIVIA ABOUT TRIESTESPRESSO
A COFFEE WITH BOB MARLEY
Bob had a dream: to grow his own coffee plantation. A dream that was pursued and realised by his
son Rohan with Marley Coffee, which produces the fine-quality Jamaica Blue Mountain coffee,
then roasted and packaged in the UK. Marley Coffee and its organic coffee will be participating in
TriestEspresso Expo.
“OXYGEN” COFFEE
“Oxygen coffee mousse”? Certainly, that’s a very unusual version of an espresso. It is a creation
by the Exar company, that through its Boliss system, enriches espresso and powder coffee with
oxygen in 30 seconds, turning them into fresh oxygen mousses, which should – according to the
company – help you keep in shape, reduce your tiredness and feel better and stronger.
A BOOK, A PICTURE AND A GOOD COFFEE
Coffee inspires you to travel around the world. First stop is Mexico: 24th October at Museo
Revoltella at 6.00 pm (and then again in the exhibition centre on Thursday 25th at 3.00 pm in the
Sandalj’s booth), author Fulvio Eccardi will present the photographic book “Caffè meraviglia del
Chiapas, Messico”. Still on Thursday 25th, at 11.00 am, the Planet Coffee booth will host a meeting
on “Cappuccino Italiano Latte Art”, which is literally conquering the world – particularly in the Far
East, where there are the best latte artists.
And finally, visitors will have a chance to see Guatemala through the photo exhibition “Guatemala,
between mysticism and traditions”, organised by the photographer Luca Rinaldini, in the Sala del
Comune di Trieste ex AIAT, Piazza Unità d’Italia no. 4, with the following opening hours: 10.00 am
– 1.00 pm and 4.00 pm – 7.00 pm.
