THE THEME OF THE EIGHT EDITION OF COLLISIONI FESTIVAL: STRANGERS
“Starngers” is a tribute to the artistic genius of David Bowie, with his song Strangers when we meet.
But it aims as well to be a thought-provoking title about the fear that overwhelms our lives, in the eyes of
the passers-by, in the streets after the attacks in Paris and Brussels. The fear for a foreign, a diverse, the one
we do not know well enough. It doesn’t matter much whether it is two boys kissing or two veiled girls at the
bus stop. An anxiety shared by the many thousands of castaways escaping their homeland trying to reach
Europe, shipwrecked on the sand of a new land with nothing less in their pockets, not a document, not a
name, becoming “Nobody”. The dismay of those who dreamt for freedom and woke up with no more civil
rights in a word dominated by that fear that make not only build up physical frontiers, but inner walls as well.
Nonetheless, art has always been teaching us that building up walls is treacherous and it helps us
keeping them opened. When we listen to that song that speaks about the love of a man for another man,
when we read about an Afghan child, it is the same amazement every single time to find ourselves in what
somebody else feels, the sudden wander of giving a name to the stranger. It is Ulysses revived every time,
when he speaks up and the strength of his tale makes his scruffy appearance fade away, while his word dig
deep into the frontier.
This is what a Festival should be about: putting in contact those people that – in spite of the differences
– are willing to make that marvelous gesture of altruism that is listening.
COLLISIONI FESTIVAL
Born eight years ago, Collisioni is nowadays the most important festival in Piedmont and it is
considered by the critic as the best festival in Italy, thanks to its innovative approach and its ability to speak
to a wide and transversal public by offering a varied offer of music, literature, cinema, enogastronomy and
entertainment. The festival takes place in Barolo, destination of international tourism known everywhere in
the world for its wine and food excellences and epicenter of UNESCO territory in Piedmont, the only Italian
vineyard landscape to receive this recognition. A village transformed for a week-end in a non-stop stage
where every square, every road is animated by meetings with the most prestigious names of international
literature, music, journalism, cinema, by artistic installations, performances and concerts with some of the
most famous Italian and international artists.
Bob Dylan has honored Collisioni by choosing the festival in 2012 as the only Italian stage of his world
tour celebrating the 50th anniversary of “Blowing in the wind”. It has been chosen as the only Italian date by
Jamiroquai in 2013, for the 20th anniversary of their formation, and by Neil Young and Deep Purple in 2014.
Last year, Collisioni hosted, among the others, concerts by Sting, Mark Knopfler, Passenger and Paolo Nutini.
But in order to understand the spirit of an agrirock festival as Collisioni is and to truly understand the
unique atmosphere that people will have the chance to live in Barolo those days, it isn’t enough to list the
richness and the quality of the cultural and musical program. Another protagonist of the kermesse, in the
village that is the symbol of the Italian enological culture, will be wine not only Barolo, but all the great wines
that will be guest of the festival coming from all Italian regions, that public will have the chance to appreciate
in tastings on the new wine&food stage of Barolo Castle. And above all, the many regional stands dedicated
to Italian cuisine excellences, that will make the public’s walks in Barolo during Collisioni an adventure of
discovering, looking for flavors and millennial traditions. Stands where cooks and producer will meet the
public with a street-food offer of their cuisine tradition and knowledge, from Piedmont’s excellences to
Marche’s ones, passing across Friuli Venezia Giulia, Abruzzo, Emilia Romagna, Veneto and the great
Southern Regions.
