ETH No. ////^ Low-temperature phase diagrams of quantum lattice systems and Properties of the edge of the Laughlin liquid A dissertation submitted to the SWISS FEDERAL INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY ZURICH for the degree of Doctor of Natural Sciences presented by Nilanjana Datta M.Sc. in Physics, from Jadavpur University, Calcutta, India born on 21.12.'62 citizen of India. accepted the recommendation of Jurg Frohlich, examiner Rudolf Morf, coexaminer Prof. Dr. on 1995. ABSTRACT PART I: This part of the thesis concerns the study temperature phases of quantum lattice systems in of ground states statistical mechanics, and lowin d > 2 dimensions. The Hamiltonians of such systems have the form H(X) where H0 is a = Ho + V(\), classical Hamiltonian and the V(A) quantum perturbation, A being that if the classical Hamiltonian, Ho, has is a perturbation parameter. We prove regular zero-temperature phase diagram, involving a finite number of periodic ground states, then the addition of a small quantum perturbation and increasing the temperature produce only smooth deformations of its phase diagram. The quantum perturbation can involve bosons or fermions and can be of infinite range as long as it decays exponentially. For fermions, the perturbation must be given by sums of monomials of even degree in creation and annihilation operators. Our analysis is based on an extension of Pirogov-Sinai theory to contour expansions in d + 1 a dimensions obtained by iteration of the Duhamel formula. When the classical Hamiltonian Ho has infinitely many ground states, the above theory cannot be applied. To circumvent this problem we construct a unitary con¬ jugation bringing H(X) into a form that enables us to find its low-energy spectrum (to some finite order > 1 in A) and to understand how the perturbation XV lifts the degeneracy of the ground state energy of Ho. Our main tool is a generalization of a form of Rayleigh-Ritz analytic perturbation theory analogous to Nekhoroshev's form of classical perturbation theory. filling v approximated by 1/m (where m is an integer) the Laughlin wave function. In Part II of the thesis the properties of the Laughlin state corresponding to the filling factor v 1/3 are analyzed. The single particle distribution and the energy per particle in this state are evaluated. For systems with a small number (N < 8) of particles, exact numerical calculations are done. For larger systems (N < 196) Monte Carlo calculations are employed. Both these studies indicate a significant non-uniformity in the single particle density, which manifests itself as a distinct peak near the edge of the Laughlin droplet. This observed non-uniformity at the edge of the electron distribution is found to be a PART II: The factor ground state of a quantum Hall system corresponding to a is known to be well odd = = result of electron-electron correlations in the quantum Hall system. The model considered consists of a hole of arbitrary size in an infinitely extended quantum Hall fluid. The hole properties of the two-dimensional electron system similar to that near the edge of the edge of a Laughlin droplet. This is verified analyses using Laughlin state in an annulus. The correlation functions of the electrons in the above model are obtained by numerically solving the generalized hypernetted chain equations and the surface energy per unit length of the edge is evaluated. are Monte Carlo near the outer of the RIASSUNTO PARTE I: La prima parte di questa tesi di dottorato stato fondamentale e delle fasi a nell'ambito della mecchanica statistica.
