INTRODUCTION
WELCOME TO ROME
The time has come for Rome, an official
candidate city for the 2024 Olympic Games,
to “breathe Olympics” for a week. So it is
fitting that one of the original sports of the
Olympic movement brings us together for
this celebration of athleticism.
be going for gold in front of a home crowd
in the Men’s Individual event while Claudia
Cesarini will aim to build on her fantastic
victory in World Cup #2 in Rio de Janeiro,
at the venues that will be used for the 2016
Olympic Games.
Modern Pentathlon came into being at the
Stockholm Olympic Games in 1912 and
was the result of Baron Pierre de Coubertin,
founder of the Modern Olympics. Now it is an
established global sport, as we see every year
during the UIPM World Cup season.
Cesarini is sure to encounter tough
competition from the likes of world No.1
Laura Asadauskaite (LTU) and No.2 Lena
Schoeneborn (GER), while De Luca’s many
rivals will include Egypt’s El Geziry brothers,
who have one gold and one silver medal
between them in this World Cup season
already, and the in-form Jun Woongtae from
Korea.
After a stage in Africa (Cairo, EGY) and a stage
in South America (Rio de Janeiro, BRA), the
World Cup comes to Europe for stages in
Rome (ITA) and Kecskemet (HUN) before the
Final is staged in a fourth continent, North
America (Sarasota, USA).
In this 3rd stage of the World Cup, organized
by the Italian Federation of Modern
Pentathlon, about 200 pentathletes will
participate on behalf of 33 nations. The event
begins with two days of qualifying on March
30/31 before for the finals determine who
wins the medals on April 1/2/3.
From an Italian perspective Riccardo De Luca,
the 2015 UIPM World Cup champion, will

In truth, the competition is so open that as
many as half of the competing nations could
supply the athletes who top the podium this
week. Especially as the race to qualify for the
Olympic Games supplies extra motivation
for some of the less established stars to gain
qualifying points, while some of the top
athletes who know they are going to Rio may
be more concerned with specific results than
the overall outcome.
Whatever happens, spectators are in for a
treat with world-class athletes competing in
world-class facilities.

FORO ITALICO
Foro Italico is a sports complex in Rome
built between 1928 and 1938 under the
design of Enrico Del Debbio and, later,
Luigi Moretti. Inspired by the Roman
forums of the imperial age, its design is
lauded as a preeminent example of Italian
architecture.

uipm president’s message
Dear Member Federations,
Dear athletes, coaches and officials,
Dear friends,
In this special and historic year we are delighted to be back in the majestic surrounds of Rome
for the 3rd round of the 2016 UIPM World Cup.
This being an Olympic year, the stakes are higher than ever for the elite athletes who will give
us so much to applaud and admire in the coming days. Qualification for Rio 2016 remains the
main priority for many countries and many individual pentathletes.
In the 2016 World Cup we have already enjoyed two very successful events. In Cairo, we saw
a precious victory for a home athlete, Amro El Geziry of Egypt, an act that the 2015 World Cup
champion Riccardo de Luca will be trying to emulate here in Rome. In Cairo we also saw a
victory for the 2008 Olympic champion Lena Schoeneborn (GER).
In Rio de Janeiro, where the Olympic venues at Deodoro Park were fully tested for the first
time, we saw Italy’s Claudia Cesarini show great determination to win Women’s Individual gold
during one of the most dramatic rainstorms I have seen in all my years involved with Modern
Pentathlon. Jun Woongtae (KOR) then won a thrilling Men’s Individual final.
Whether you are involved on the field of play, behind the scenes or as a spectator here in the
ancient birthplace of the legendary gladiators, I hope you will be impressed by the drama of
our sport and the commitment of our competitors.
We have greatly enjoyed the UIPM competitions that have been held in Rome in the past. Our
hosts, the Local Organising Committee, the Italian Modern Pentathlon Federation, the Italian
Olympic Committee (CONI), the Italian Government, sponsors, media and volunteers are
accustomed to showcasing Modern Pentathlon on a global stage that befits the prestige of our
corporate and broadcast partners.
As always, I would ask our athletes and coaches not to forget that they have a responsibility to
uphold the values of Fair Play, friendship and peace that underpin our sport.
I wish you all a wonderful week of Modern Pentathlon.

President, Union Internationale
de Pentathlon Moderne

FIPM PRESIDENT’S message
It is with great pleasure that the Federazione Italiana Pentathlon Moderno welcomes all
members of the big family of our sport. From March 30 to April 3 in Rome, the “Eternal City”,
athletes, coaches and managers from around the world will be the protagonists of the 3rd
stage of the 2016 UIPM World Cup. The Federazione Italiana Pentathlon Moderno, which
I have the duty and the honor of chairing, has put together the best resources to enable
athletes to compete in venues technically excellent and scenically unparalleled and allow fans
of our sport attending the competitions to enjoy a unique spectacle.
We are sure that the international delegations will have an unforgettable week, while the
citizens of Rome will have a great opportunity to see up close our sport and the incredible
emotions it creates. On behalf of myself and the Italian Federal Councillors I wish good luck to
the athletes who will be giving their best to honor this great event.

MODERN PENTATHLON
DID YOU KNOW... ?
AIM OF THE GAME
CHARACTERISTICS
Athletes compete in fencing, swimming
and horse riding, followed by a
combined running and shooting event,
with the first to cross the line winning
the gold medal. And all of this happens
on one day!
With its mixture of physical and mental
demands that test courage, stamina,
coordination, concentration, skill and
flexibility – plus a generous dose of
unpredictability – this event has a
strong claim to producing the most
complete athlete.
the origin
Just as the ancient
pentathlon was based
on the skills needed to
be a soldier, the modern
pentathlon was devised to
test the abilities required by
a cavalry soldier.
Pentathlon was first held
in the ancient Olympic
Games in 708 BC and
consisted of running, long
jump, spear throwing,
discus and wrestling.
Baron Pierre de Coubertin,
the founder of the modern
Olympic Games, created
modern pentathlon,
comprising the five events
that continue until today .
