DOMENICO MANGANO Selected Works DOMENICO MANGANO Selected Works Electric Candles, 2013, series of 10 photographs, Cprint on alluminium 45x30 cm each.
In the Netherlands there are over seven thousand
desecrated churches, many of these are built in the postwar period, particularly between the 1950s and 1960s.
With the cultural changes of the 1968 and the decline in
religious practice churches have become gyms, cultural
centers or malls or even mosques, changing the original
religious connotation.
DOMENICO MANGANO Selected Works Orderliness, 2013, Installation on wood billboard, HD
Video, 9’. This silent video is a registration of the surreal and at the
same time austere ambiance of the village of Veenhuizen
situated in the North East of the Netherlands, which is a
former re-education colony. DOMENICO MANGANO Selected Works Celkap, 2013, oil on paper, 27,9 x 35,6 cm.
This work is based on a Dutch tradition of the Nineteenth
century when prisoners were obliged to wear a mask. In
this way recognition between the prisoners was avoided
and the prisoner’s identity erased. DOMENICO MANGANO Selected Works Veenhuizen Series, 2012, 12 photographs, Inkjet print
on baryte paper, 50 x 75 cm each. This work is inspired by the village of Veenhuizen situated
in the North East of the Netherlands, which is a former reeducation colony and nowadays still counts four prisons.
Characteristic of this village are the moralistic writings on
the houses, which aimed at educating the people who
were working and living in the village. I have played with
the sense of these writings by changing or opposing
them. This is the first sketch of a project that will be
carried out in the village itself.
DOMENICO MANGANO Selected Works Hou en trouw (Love for Fidelity) 2012, Installation. This work is inspired by the village of Veenhuizen
situated in the North East of the Netherlands, which is a
former re-education colony and nowadays still counts
four prisons. Characteristic of this village are the
moralistic writings on the houses, which aimed at
educating the people who were working and living in the
village. I have played with the sense of these writings by
changing or opposing them. This is the first sketch of a
project that will be carried out in the village itself.
DOMENICO MANGANO Selected Works War Game, 2012, HD video 20’.
The video War Game is a series of tableaux vivants in
Amsterdam. Eight, almost frozen, scenes that are
accompanied by a disturbing ongoing sound alarm. It
might seem an unreal portrait of the city, however with
this video a monthly ‘ritual’ in the Netherlands is captured.
DOMENICO MANGANO Selected Works Nederlands op straat, 2012, audio mp3 file 7'.
This sound piece is a special language course for
aspirant drugdealers in the Netherlands. It is inspired by
the notorious Sicilian trade and at the same time a
parody of a Dutch course for integration. It has been
developed shortly after my emigration to the Netherlands
where I was following myself an integration course and
confronted with the stereotype of the Sicilian abroad.
DOMENICO MANGANO Selected Works Cu avi lingua passa u mari, 2012, canvas banner with
embroidery 400x 100 cm .
A typical Sicilian expression, translated as Whoever has
the language crosses the sea, became the slogan for the
first supporter group of Lesbians, Gays, Bisexuals and
Transgenders for soccer in Palermo and Italy. The work
was made in the context of an exhibition connected to
the gay pride and offers another image on the masculine
culture that surrounds soccer in Italy.
DOMENICO MANGANO Selected Works 515, 2011, HD video 5'.
This project is inspired on the story of the anarchist
Gaetano Bresci who emigrated to the United States and
returned in Italy to assassinate king Umberto I in the
Royal palace of Monza. 515 is an ironic vision of the
return of Bresci to the palace today, alluding the actual
political situation in Italy. The work was made for the
biennale in Monza that took place in the Royal palace.
DOMENICO MANGANO Selected Works An Oath Sealed with Butter is an Oath that is soon forgotten, 2011, Oil on paper 45x35 cm each.
The starting point of this project is a stock of forgotten wrapping papers used for Italian butter, which was
distributed in a cooperative way after the war. This work is inspired by a research of proverbs on butter in
the Netherlands that has an important tradition in producing butter. I have realized a series of ‘fake’
posters, painted, inspired by Dutch exemplars that once were used to represent a class or ideological
group. It has become a series of ironic bricolages that combine ideals, cultures and time periods,
becoming decontextualised interpretations.
DOMENICO MANGANO Selected Works Empty Paper, 2010, video HD 15 min.
During the summer of 2010, when Greece risked to be
expelled from the European Union, I asked ten artists
who live and work in Athens to describe me their first
drawing that they made when they were a kid. Empty
paper is a metaphor for the origin; the entrance door to
another world but at the same time a Tabula Rasa or
restart. With: Omio, Georgia Sagri, Nina Papaconstantinou,
Vassilis Karouk, Nikos Navridis, Katerina Apostolidou,
Theo Prodromidis, Anna Lascari, Poka Yio and Irini
Karayannopoulou.
DOMENICO MANGANO Selected Works Ablo, 2009, HD video 3'.
Ablo project was part of the exhibition You We, curated
by Francesco Bonami, who invited ten artists to make a
video about a Griot musician of Burkino Faso. I have
imagined Ablo inside a public garden where he has a
mysterious encounter with a woman who carries out an
unexpected and surrealistic gesture that destabilizes the
protagonist totally.
DOMENICO MANGANO Selected Works Twinkle Twiddle, 2009, HD video 11'.
A cinematographic set in an ancient hospital in Rome,
marked by suffering and dead, was the context of a live
performance that resulted in a noir movie with a sinister
outcome. DOMENICO MANGANO Selected Works Rumor to the contrary 2008, lambda print 150x100 cm.
DOMENICO MANGANO Selected Works Skatepark, 2008, Installation, graffiti on wood variable size.
Skate Park is an installation in the main room of the museum in
Rome that is dedicated to the work of the American Norwegian
artist H.C. Andersen. In between the neo-classical sculptures a
skate park with graffiti of the names of the American presidents is
realized. In my imagination the room will come alive during the
night when the statues come down and play.
DOMENICO MANGANO Selected Works Dynamite, 2008, Installation, iron, paper, glue, popcorn,
variable size.
In the center of one of the rooms of the museum H.C. Andersen a
popcorn horse is placed. It is an anti-classical sculpture,
symbolizing the free spirit of the American dream. The work was
part of the solo exhibition Over the Blurring Shine in the Hendrik
Christian Andersen Museum in Rome.
DOMENICO MANGANO Selected Works Disco Public Toilet, 2008, Installation 250x180x250 cm
mixed media.
Disco Public Toilet is a typical Chinese public toilet from the
outside, but inside you will find a surprise: flashy lights and
mirrors referring to the nightlife in Shanghai. This functional
one-person disco offers for a moment an escape from the
collective Chinese culture. The work was part of the solo
exhibition Don’t disturb the growing grass that I realized
during a residency in Shanghai. DOMENICO MANGANO Selected Works The Noise of the Oar, 2008, Wall Painting with
chinese stamp, 400 cm.
This wall painting conducts the text 'the noise of the
oar', which is inspired by a Chinese poem. It represents
the river that crosses Shanghai. The visitors are invited
to use the stamps themselves and take the poetic phrase
with them. The work was part of the solo exhibition
Don’t disturb the growing grass that I realized during a
residency in Shanghai DOMENICO MANGANO Selected Works Don’t Disturb the Growing Grass, 2008, video 6'.
Don't disturb the growing grass is a travel in China
during the Olympic Games of 2008. A story made of
images that reveal the strong contrast inside of the city
of Shanghai between the pauperized part and the new
futuristic one that reminds of an amusement park.
DOMENICO MANGANO Selected Works Don’t Disturb the Growing Grass, 2008, lambda prints,150 x 100 cm.!
DOMENICO MANGANO Selected Works Without Horizon, 2008, lambda print 70 x 55 cm each.
DOMENICO MANGANO Selected Works The Pine Float, 2007, video 6'.
This video follows an imaginary hunter, my father, in his
garden. The course of the happenings and encounters
evoke an unheimlich sensation.
DOMENICO MANGANO Selected Works Happy Ending 2007, lambda print 70 x 55 cm each.!
DOMENICO MANGANO Selected Works Ducks 4 Sale / Moon Landing, 2007, Oil on Canvas 150x100 cm each.
DOMENICO MANGANO Selected Works Dark Messages, 2007, video 3 min.
The video Dark Messages begins with shipping
container cranes in a vacant wharf and then shifts from
twilight to night, presenting a group of men abandoning
one vehicle and piling into another in a conspiratorial
mood. Avoiding any sense of plot, the work is
emblematic of urban life: accidents and injury without
known causes, anxiety without explicit reasons, endings
without closure.
DOMENICO MANGANO Selected Works The Light Bridge, 2005, light projector, variable size.
This fascist bridge, the old way to enter the mountains
of Madonie in Sicily, is abandoned nowadays and
replaced by a more modern highway bridge that covers
it. But at night, when its silhouette appears on the hill, it
lives again like a ghost, wanting to preserve the memory
of that place of passage and exchange. The work was
made for the group exhibition Le Vie dell’Arte in the
Madonie mountains in Sicily. DOMENICO MANGANO Selected Works Too Much, 2005, video 3 min.
‘What
do you do in America?’ That’s the opening
question of this video in which the American countryside
appears as a place of transition of anonymous towns,
where the only reference points are gas stations and
shopping malls. These are places where time seems
suspended in a dimension without history. The video
was made during a residency at Art/OMI International
arts center, New York State.
DOMENICO MANGANO Selected Works Social & Private 2005, lambda print 75x50 cm.
DOMENICO MANGANO Selected Works Pizzosella, 2004, video 3'.
Pizzosella is a video that combines fragments of a
contemporary Palermo in which the inhabitants, animals
and buildings are the main protagonists. The craziness
of the reality of the quotidian routine gives this video a
fictional tinge.
DOMENICO MANGANO Selected Works Primo Maggio, 2004, video 3'.
In Primo Maggio (May Day) a group of Slovaks, that came
for work to Italy, sing ‘The Internationale’. Ten years
after the implosion of the communist system this act
seems a comic tragedy. DOMENICO MANGANO Selected Works Color/Print 2003, lambda print 100x75 cm.
DOMENICO MANGANO Selected Works Drift, 2003, video 2'.
This video addresses in a lyric way the simultaneity of
the traces of the illegal immigrants that arrive daily in
the south of Italy with the beach life of the locals.
DOMENICO MANGANO Selected Works Anguish, 2002, video 3'.
This video is a mental trip from the south to the north,
made by a hypothetical laborer.
DOMENICO MANGANO Selected Works Encastrolo, 2001, video 6'.
In this video, Giovanni, a street trader in my home town,
confesses in Sicilian dialect during a party the story of
his life. He was falsely accused of being a member of the
Sicilian Mafia and sentenced to life in prison. After three
years, the mistake was rectified. While other Sicilian men
could have felt proud of being taken for a mafioso, the
protagonist talks about this humilation.
DOMENICO MANGANO Selected Works Palermo 2001, color/print 75x50 cm each.
DOMENICO MANGANO Selected Works Merano 2000, 2000, video 10'.
During a seasonal job in the touristic city of Merano I
have lived together with a small community of Croatians.
This video draws on my experience of getting to know
from close by a group of people who isolated themselves
deliberately from the consumer society.
DOMENICO MANGANO Selected Works Merano 2000, 2000, color/print 75x50 cm each.!
DOMENICO MANGANO Selected Works Voyage Extraordinaire de J., 2000, color/print 75x50 cm.
DOMENICO MANGANO Selected Works La storia di Mimmo 2000 video 10 min.
The protagonist of La Storia di Mimmo is my uncle who
lives in a working-class neighborhood of Palermo and
who observes the world from his window, never crossing
the threshold into the outside world. He talks about his
memories, rituals and habits. Mimmo and I are
accomplices in the video, demonstrated by the extreme
close-ups of the face and the obese body of Mimmo.
DOMENICO MANGANO Selected Works La storia di Mimmo 1999, color/print 75x50 cm each.
