The beautiful Collazzi Estate, since 1933 belongs to the Marchi family almost 400 hectares (960 acres) of which 25 hectares (60 acres) are vineyards. During the last decade the Marchi brothers have invested heavily in the development of Collazzi’s farming business, renewing the vineyards and restructuring the cellar, with the goal to produce excellent wines. At Collazzi the microclimate is normally warmer and drier than the surrounding area. A portion of the estate lies in a natural amphitheater, with a perfect south-westerly exposure. The high amount of sun light and the high daily temperatures allow a prolonged, complete ripening of the farming products, consistently each year. Wine is grown on 25 hectares, while the specialized cultivation of 120 hectares of olive trees produces a precious extra virgin olive oil. Collazzi is also dedicated to the raising of bees, which yields a small quantity of organic honey. The majestic villa is situated on a terrace on top of a hill. Its project has been attributed to Michelangelo Buonarroti. Accessed through a cypress lined avenue, the villa stands amidst a garden built on two levels: the first is an enormous green, with oaks, chestnuts and cypress trees dating back to the XIX century; the second terrace is an “Italian” garden, with square flower beds and lemon vases. In 1933 the property was purchased by the brothers Carlo and Giulio Marchi. Together, with the fundamental help of Elena Marchi Luling, they completed the villa’s extraordinary architecture, restoring it to its original Michelangelo’s design. In 1938 the famous landscape architect Pietro Porcinai built a rectangular swimming pool made of yellow and grey quartz: embedded in the garden’s green, it was positioned so to reflect the villa’s façade onto the water surface. In the 1990s, the Collazzi vineyards and cellars underwent a radical upgrading, with the intention of producing high-calibre wines of striking personality. Management of the vineyards aims for total respect of the land and the environment, and this reverence is the heartfelt legacy that will be handed down to future generations. The quality of these vines reflects how harmoniously the soils, the climate, and the grapes have evolved together over time. The restructuring of the vineyards began in the mid-1990s, with Lamberto Frescobaldi directing the project on behalf of the Marchi family. The Collazzi soils are sandy, partly clay, rich in limestone and gravel; these conditions led to the planting of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, in addition to the traditional Sangiovese. This varied selection, combined with the area's mild climate, ensures production of wines that are complex and distinctive. The vines are planted at a density of over 6,150 vines per hectare, trained to both spurred cordon and Guyot systems; only a few buds are allowed on the vines, which yield a truly complex wine with a long-lingering finish. Toscana Rosso IGT Tenuta I Collazzi's flagship wine was first produced in 1999; the grapes are all picked from our estate vineyards. The blend is made up of four varieties: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, all hand-harvested into small boxes and fermented separately. In the cellar the individual berries are examined by hand on a sorting table to eliminate even the smallest foreign matter, such as damaged grapes and leaf fragments. Fermentation in small, stainless steel tanks at 26-30°C is followed by maceration on the skins for about 18 days. Malolactic fermentation is mainly in oak, as is subsequent ageing, which lasts 18 months; the barriques may be new or even once-used, as it is important to prevent the oak from overpowering the fruit. Before release, the wine is bottle-aged for a further 12 months. The elegance and complex aromatic profile of the Cabernet Sauvignon and the Cabernet Franc blend with the opulence of the Merlot and the intensity of the Petit Verdot to create a magnificent wine. the available sizes are: 750 ml, 1,5 lt., 3lt, 6lt. Chianti Classico DOCG In 2002, Collazzi also began production of I Bastioni, a Chianti Classico produced from the grapes harvested from the 7 hectares registered at DOCG in the adjacent town of San Casciano val di Pesa. It is blended from our own grapes, picked in the vineyards facing south/southwest, where the soils are gravel-rich and well-drained, in other words ideal for sangiovese. The handpicked fruit is also sorted by hand and then fermented with a method similar to that used for the Collazzi; a 12-day maceration on the skins gives the wine complexity and body. I Bastioni combines the seductive elegance of its primary grape, Sangiovese, with the roundedness and forcefulness of small amounts of Merlot and Malvasia nera. I Bastioni possesses an outstanding personality, with close-knit, supple tannins endowing the wine with complexity and character. A 12-month stay in oak is followed by blending and bottling. Toscana Rosso IGT Libertà is a supple red from grapes harvested in Tenuta I Collazzi's younger vineyards, which came into full production in 2008. The wine reveals an impeccable harmony of soft Merlot tannins, spicy Syrah, and vibrantly stylish Sangiovese. All the grapes are picked by hand and each variety fermented separately in small stainless steel tanks, before maturing for some ten months in oak and in stainless steel. The name Libertà (freedom) was chosen as a reference to the Collazzi coat-of-arms, which has included that word since 1376, when the family who owned Collazzi at that time was honoured with its own crest in recognition of its heroic fight for the freedom of Florence. Toscana Bianco IGT The intention to produce a white wine had been in the air for quite a while. We experimented at length before finally deciding on Fiano as the most interesting of the white grapes grown in Tuscany. The grapes are picked and sorted by hand, then gently pressed and fermented with meticulous care, as is our practice at Collazzi. The 2010 harvest yielded a very elegant, cellarable wine with rich texture and body. It was aged on lees for several months, which resulted in its striking straw-yellow hue and unmatched complexity. Stylish and full-bodied, this is a remarkable wine. The name Otto Muri recalls the eight walls which created the same number of terraces that together make up the vineyard. Traditionally, Petit Verdot, has been considered a loyal ally in creating blends of excellence. Here at Collazzi we made our Petit Verdot the protagonist of this unique wine due to its strength and distinguished aroma. Extraordinarily rich, deep, complex and concentrated, yet remarkably elegant and graceful, Ferro shows incredible longevity and aromatic freshness. Aged for 24 months in new french oak which completes the wine’s structure and complexity. Produced from a single vineyard overlooking the beautiful town of Florence where nature was particularly kind in providing favorable conditions to allow Petit Verdot to reach full maturity. Collazzi – Impruneta The Collazzi olive groves are located in the townships of Impruneta and Scandicci, which have always produced delicious oil; these areas are famous for their temperate climate and ideal soils for premium olive growing. Most of the Collazzi estate is given over to olive production, and, in addition to the unique oil they yield, these distinctive groves make the surrounding landscape and Florentine hills truly memorable. The Frantoio and Morellino olive varieties produce the largest part of the oil. The Frantoio yields crisp fruit aromas and an intense green tonality, while the Morellino is unmistakeably smooth and rounded. The harvest occurs from late October to mid-November, and the olives are pressed immediately after picking. Before being tasted, the oil is allowed to rest for a few weeks in ancient terracotta urns. The resulting colour is an intense green, and the fruit-rich aroma is typical of fresh olives, with a delicate yet intense flavour, and a hint of freshly-picked artichoke on the finish. The oil should be stored away from light and at a constant temperature; the oil will be excellent even a year after harvest.
