The building was originally constructed in the 15th century and was known as the Palazzo della Ragione. The building was the seat of government and also housed a number of shops on the ground floor. Its name is linked to Andrea Palladio, who redesigned it, adding the famous loggias with serliana openings in white marble to the existing Gothic building. Since 1994 the Basilica has been protected as part of a World Heritage Site along with the other Palladian buildings of Vicenza. A large restoration project started in 2007. Along with cleaning the white stone facing of the loggia’s Serlian windows, the famous vaulted wooden roof, which had been destroyed during World War II and subsequently rebuilt using concrete, has now been restored to its original aspect. In compliance with existing safety and accessibility regulations, an illumination system has been installed. Also new are a centralized video monitoring system; elevators accessible for people with disabilities, and staircases that make it possible to access all parts of the building, including the loggia and the terrace, which provides a spectacular view over the city. In 2012 the Basilica Palladiana has reopened to the public by hosting an international exhibition. Manens-Tifs s.p.a.
