dell’attività marmifera della Versilia
nato nel 1982 che riunisce la maggior parte della produzione lapidea
versiliese. Nella compagine consortile sono presenti gruppi industriali
leader mondiali nella realizzazione di
grandi e prestigiosi progetti, piccole
e medie aziende di escavazione e
trasformazione di marmo e granito,
laboratori artigiani specializzati nelle
lavorazioni artistiche e nella scultura.
Cosmave svolge la missione di creare
sinergie fra le aziende socie per aumentarne il vantaggio competitivo
sui mercati internazionali; intende
promuovere nel mercato globale il
valore aggiunto dei prodotti finiti,
coniugando i contenuti di una conoscenza ed un expertise secolari
nella lavorazione della pietra, per la
soddisfazione di un mercato sempre
più esigente e mutevole.
La pietra lavorata nel territorio apuoversiliese ha raggiunto le più importanti opere del mondo, segno di un

osmave is a non-profit consortium
to promote the activity of the Versilia
marble industry. It was borne in 1982
and its associates represent the majority of the local stone production. The
consortium includes industrial groups
which are world leaders in the making
of large and prestigious projects, small
and medium size firms specialized
in the excavation of marble and its
processing together with granite, artisan
workshops which create artistic works
and sculptures.
Cosmave’s main task is to create strong
binds and synergies among associates,
with the goal of improving competition
in the international markets. It also
intends to promote the added value existing in the products of the associated
companies, trying to unite the contents
of centuries-old knowledge and expertise in stone work, thus satisfying the
needs of a market more and more
demanding and inconstant.
The stone worked in the Apuan-Versilia district can be seen in many of
the most important constructions and
works-of-art in the world, indicating tradition and prestige well settled in time;
prestige which comes from following
strict quality standards, the use of the
most advanced technologies and from
a deep-rooted marble culture.
During the year 2000, Cosmave has
created Cosmavexport, an operative
branch meant to manage the promotion and the entering into the
international markets. It facilitates and
coordinates the associates in taking
part in the most important exhibitions
in the world.

osmave proposes to facilitate the
cooperation among its members and
develops services aiming to improve
efficiency as well as effectiveness.
Thanks to the recent strengthening
of its structure and head office, the
consortium is now capable to supply
assistance directly, or by “outsourcing”,
and creating a special “system” of services for the development of the marble
companies of the area.
To the small and medium size companies, Cosmave offers a wide range
of services connected to exhibitions,
foreign trade, sales promotion, information, telematic assistance, training,
conventions with suppliers and banks,
assistance and consulting.

a città di Pietrasanta è ormai da molti
anni uno dei più vivi centri mondiali
della scultura. Qui gli scultori non eseguono solo le loro opere destinate a
gallerie e a prestigiosi musei. Da qualche tempo grandi nomi della scultura
contemporanea hanno deciso di
lasciare concrete testimonianze del
forte legame che li unisce a questa
terra: donano sculture monumentali,
realizzano piazze, affrescano pareti
di chiese e palazzi, allestiscono imponenti mostre personali. Hanno
lasciato una loro opera in piazze e
luoghi della città grandi personalità
come Fernando Botero, Igor Mitoraj,
Jean-Michel Folon, Francesco Messina,
Giò Pomodoro, Gonzalo Fonseca.

or many years, Pietrasanta has been
one of the most important world centers for sculpture. Though the sculptors
work mainly for art galleries and prestigious museums, for some time, great
names of contemporary art have shown
their bond of affection that ties them to
the town by donating monumental
sculptures, designing squares, painting
frescoes on the walls of churches and
palaces, organizing imposing personal
shows. On this purpose we can mention: Fernando Botero, Igor Mitoraj, JeanMichel Folon, Francesco Messina, Giò
Pomodoro, Gonzalo Fonseca.

he stone district, created in 2000,
extends in between the two provinces
of Massa Carrara and Lucca and it is
the hallmark of prestigious quarries
from where distinctive and high-quality
marble is extracted, and of high specialized workers. The area enjoyes also the
presence of qualified service centers
for the training and the transferring of
technological innovation. The marble
and granite processed in the district
face, decorate and fit out the most
prestigious building of the world.
But the Apuan Versilia territory offers
other things in addition to the marble
quarries. It constitutes the starting point
for the discovery of artistic, gastronomic
and naturalistic itineraries. Sea, beaches
well equipped with tourist facilities, sport
resorts, art and culture, they all belong
to an environmental context capable to
create a great fascination. In particular
historic Versilia, that one including the
Communes of Forte dei Marmi, Pietrasanta, Seravezza and Stazzema,
is a land which offers itineraries of
great appeal; it can give unforgettable
atmospheres and offers aspects of
absolute historical and cultural value.

dalle famose cave delle Alpi Apuane
che si estraggono i preziosi marmi,
per essere lavorati e inviati in tutto il
mondo. Tanti sono i giacimenti da cui
provengono i blocchi nella loro ricca
varietà di colori e di grana: Calacatta,
Arabescato, Bardiglio, Cardoso, Brecce e Cipollino hanno fatto la storia
di grandi imprese industriali e sono
utilizzati per gli impieghi più vari.
Michelangelo Buonarroti, il grande
scultore del XVI secolo, per volontà
di Leone X trascorse tre anni sulle
Apuane, costruendo una strada che
giungeva fino al mare e adoprandosi
per aprire le cave di Trambiserra e de
La Cappella.

Cosimo I aprì cave di marmi bianchi,
venati, bardigli e brecce policrome,
proseguendo la strada di Michelangelo fino al cuore della montagna, da cui
Giambologna trasse il primo blocco
di marmo Statuario.

T
he precious marble we admire all over
the world comes from quarries of the
Apuan Alps. The legendary pure Statuario, Calacatta, Arabescato, Bardiglio,
Cardoso, Brecce e Cipollino have made
the history of big firms and are employed for different uses.
Michelangelo Buonarroti, the great
sculptor of the Italian Renaissance
Era, spent three years in the Apuan
Alps working for Pope Leone X. In that
period he built a road which reached
the sea and opened the quarries of
Trambiserra and Cappella.
In the Renaissance Era the Grand
Duke Cosimo I opened quarries of
White, Grained and Bardiglio marbles,
multicolor Brecce, and also extending
Michelangelo’s road to the very core
of Mount Altissimo; from there, the architect Giambologna extracted the first
block of Statuario marble.

Le botteghe artigiane sono meta
continua di visitatori provenienti da
tutto il mondo. Qui si tramandano gli
antichi mestieri di scalpellino, ornatista, sbozzatore. Accanto al maestro
artigiano s’incontrano i nomi dei
grandi scultori contemporanei che
alla produzione delle figure che hanno fatto la storia dell’arte, affiancano
le più avanzate proposte dell’arte
moderna, a testimonianza della continuità fra passato e presente della
cultura del marmo che caratterizza
questa terra.
Un’alta professionalità contraddistingue la lavorazione delle fonderie
d’arte. Numerosi sono gli scultori che
usano indifferentemente marmo e
bronzo come mezzi espressivi e molti sono coloro che prediligono quasi
esclusivamente il bronzo. In Versilia,
ed in particolare a Pietrasanta, oggi si
può ben affermare che esiste la più
alta concentrazione al mondo e la
migliore qualità di fonderie artistiche.

n Pietrasanta’s laboratories, worksof-art are made to embellish government buildings, churches, museums
and parks. The artisan workshops in
the old part of the town are visited by
thousands of tourists all the year round.
In these workshops, the old trades, such
as chiselling, decorating and the hewing
of the rough marble still survive, as they
have been passed on from generation
to generation. Renowned contemporary
sculptors from all parts of the world
come to Pietrasanta to work side by
side with the local master artisans and,
in addition to reproduce masterpieces
which made the history of art, join the
most advanced proposals in modern
art, to testify the continuity from past
to present of the marble culture which
characterizes this land.
A very high professional competence
distinguishes the work of the art
foundries. Numerous sculptors, without
distinction, use marble or bronze as
raw material, while many others prefer
exclusively bronze. One can state, without doubt that, at the present time, in
Pietrasanta, there is the highest number
of art foundries in the world.
