Ora più che mai, la desertificazione - ossia l’avanzato degrado dei suoli nelle zone aride, semi-aride
e sub-umide secche - è diventata una delle principali minacce ambientali i cui effetti si fanno sentire
ben oltre le zone direttamente colpite. La mostra fotografica dal titolo “Deserted Land”, che sarà
inaugurata il 17 giugno in occasione della Giornata Mondiale per la Lotta alla Desertificazione dallo
IED di Torino, documenta perfettamente questa realtà. La mostra descrive la vita nelle province
desertificate di Alentejo e dell’Algarve, in Portogallo. Le immagini di desolazione, abbandono
e migrazione scattate dagli studenti, a cui rendo omaggio per i loro splendidi lavori, esprimono
graficamente il “volto umano della desertificazione”. In questo modo, essi hanno lodevolmente
contribuito alla realizzazione degli obiettivi della Convenzione, secondo la quale, l’azione inizia dalla
consapevolezza. La mostra rappresenta il promemoria di una realtà di cui spesso ci si dimentica.
La mostra è altresì parte del complesso di eventi che avranno luogo in tutto il mondo per celebrare
la Giornata Mondiale per la Lotta alla Desertificazione. Il tema della Giornata di quest’anno è
“Salvaguardare il suolo e l’acqua = garantire il nostro futuro comune.” In questo senso, il tema lancia
un invito a mobilitare e promuovere una coalizione globale per la lotta contro la desertificazione, il
degrado dei suoli e la siccità.
Il Portogallo, insieme con la Spagna, la Grecia e l’Italia, sono i paesi del Nord Mediterraneo
maggiormente affetti da desertificazione e siccità. Circa il 13% del territorio del Portogallo (più di 1
milione di ha.) risulta essere vulnerabile alla desertificazione. L’Alentejo e l’Algarve ne sono le aree
più colpite.
La Convenzione delle Nazioni Unite per la Lotta alla Desertificazione (UNCCD), rappresenta l’unico
accordo multilaterale esistente a livello internazionale che focalizza l’attenzione sul degrado del suolo
come interesse globale, in particolare nelle zone aride in cui risiedono alcune delle più vulnerabili
categorie di persone e di ecosistemi. L’obiettivo primario della Convenzione è quello di sostenere gli
sforzi volti a combattere la desertificazione, il degrado dei suoli nonché attenuare gli effetti della siccità
in tutto il mondo. A tal fine, nel 2007, le 193 parti della Convenzione hanno adottato un nuovo piano
d’azione strategico per migliorarne l’attuazione a tutti i livelli, al fine di affrontare le principali sfide e
creare una nuova e più dinamica coalizione globale a sostegno delle persone e degli ecosistemi.

Il Segretariato UNCCD, insieme al Dipartimento per le Politiche Forestali del Portogallo, l’UNCCD
National Focal Point, hanno sponsorizzato l’evento, al fine di affermare la necessità di coinvolgere i
giovani nella lotta alla desertificazione, e per sensibilizzare l’opinione pubblica sugli effetti di questo
flagello. Il coinvolgimento dello IED esemplifica il ruolo centrale che gli istituti di istruzione possono
svolgere per affrontare i temi legati alla desertificazione.
Permettetemi di esprimere la mia gratitudine al Direttore dello IED e al suo staff per l’impegno
profuso, attraverso questa iniziativa, a sostegno di questa importante causa. Vi invito tutti a riflettere
sulle immagini e pensieri che la mostra suscita.
More than ever before, desertification - the advanced land degradation in arid, semi-arid and dry
sub-humid areas - has become a major environmental threat whose impacts are felt beyond the
directly affected areas. The photo exhibition themed, “Desert Land,” to be launched on 17 June on
the occasion of the World Day to Combat Desertification (WDCD) by the IED of Turin demonstrates this
reality. The exhibition describes life in the desertified provinces of Alentejo and Algarve in Portugal.
The images of desolation, abandon and migration depicted through the eyes of the students - to
whom I pay tribute for their fabulous works - tell the story of the “human face of desertification.”
In so doing, they make a laudable contribution towards the fulfillment of the Convention’s goals
because action begins with awareness. The exhibition is a reminder of a reality that is often
forgotten.
The exhibition is also part of the worldwide events to mark the World Day to Combat Desertification.
This year the Day, is themed “Conserving land and water=securing our common future.” The threats
to soil security unleashed by desertification, land degradation and drought (DLDD) have the potential
to imperil our efforts towards securing our common future. Thus, the theme is a call to mobilize and
foster a global coalition to combat DLDD.
Portugal, along with Spain, Greece and Italy, are the countries in the northern Mediterranean most
affected by desertification and drought. Approximately 13 %of Portugal’s territory, more than 1
million Ha. is vulnerable to desertification. The Algarve and Alentejo regions are the hardest hit.
The United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) is the sole multilateral agreement
designed to bring attention to land degradation as a global concern, especially in the drylands where
some of the most vulnerable ecosystems and people in the world reside. The Convention’s primary
goal is to support efforts to combat DLDD around the world. To this end, in 2007, the 193 parties
to the Convention adopted a new strategic plan of action to enhance the implementation of the
Convention at all levels with a view to address key challenges and create a new, revitalized global
coalition committed to delivering benefits for people and ecosystems.
The UNCCD Secretariat, along with the Forestry Department of the Government Portugal, the UNCCD
National Focal Point, sponsored the event in recognition of the need to involve young people in
the fight against desertification, and to raise public awareness on the impact of this scourge. The
involvement of IED exemplifies the central role that educational institutions can play in addressing
DLDD.
Let me express my gratitude to the Director of the IED and his staff for their commitment to this
important cause through the initiative. I invite you all to reflect on the images and thoughts that the
exhibition evokes.

La desertificazione e il degrado del territorio nelle aree aride, semi-aride e sub umide secche, come
riconosce anche la UNCCD , sono problemi globali che influiscono negativamente sullo sviluppo rurale,
sullo sfruttamento del terreno, sulle risorse idriche, sulle attività forestali e agricole e richiedono risposte
globali mediante sforzi collettivi per sradicare la povertà e la fame a promuovere la salute e il benessere
per le popolazioni delle aree colpite. Ciò significa che combattere la desertificazione e l’effetto delle
siccità richiede politiche che soprattutto colleghino lo sfruttamento del suolo, la sicurezza alimentare e il
sostentamento delle popolazioni agli obiettivi di uno sviluppo sostenibile. In particolare servono azioni
speciali di sviluppo, dispiegamento e diffusione di tecnologie, inclusa la condivisione e l’adeguamento
di scala delle migliori pratiche e delle lezioni imparate attraverso i vari modi di affrontare la lotta alla
desertificazione ai vari livelli quali le pratiche di agricoltura sostenibile, e la tutela e riabilitazione della
copertura vegetale, con un adeguato sostegno per le pratiche tradizionali e i saperi locali.
In questo contesto, il Programma di Azione Nazionale Portoghese contro la Desertificazione (PNPCD),
introdotto nel giugno del 1999, ha riconosciuto quali obiettivi strategici: (i) La tutela del suolo e delle
acque; (ii) L’assistenza per le popolazioni delle aree rurali; (iii) Il recupero delle aree maggiormente
minacciate e interessate dalla desertificazione; (iv) La sensibilizzazione dell’opinione pubblica riguardo alle
questioni della desertificazione; (v) Far sì che le azioni volte a combattere la desertificazione diventino
parte integrante di politiche generali e settoriali specificatamente mirate allo sviluppo rurale.
In virtù degli obiettivi sopra indicati, all’interno della Giornata Mondiale della lotta contro la
Desertificazione tenutasi nel 2008 (17 giugno), la Liaison Office di Roma della Segreteria dell’UNCCD ha
suggerito che la IED (Istituto Europeo di Design) di Torino sviluppasse una missione fotografica sul tema
della desertificazione in Portogallo. E’ stato proposto e accolto il suggerimento di fare un viaggio di dieci
giorni (dal 17 giugno al 27 giugno 2008) attraverso le regioni dell’Algarve Orientale e dell’Alentejo – nello
specifico nei comuni di Almodôvar, Alcoutim, Mértola, Castro Verde, Serpa, Moura, Mourão e Barrancos
– alcune delle regioni europee più colpite dalla desertificazione. Qui non è stato solo possibile vedere e
toccare con mano il paesaggio locale, la biodiversità di flora e fauna, ma anche entrare in contatto con le
popolazioni residenti, dagli anziani ai più giovani, e con quelle istituzioni pubbliche e della società civile
che stanno sviluppando programmi, progetti e azioni per creare nuove opportunità e nuova speranza.
La Desertificazione è un fenomeno e una questione silenziosa. Anche la fotografia vive e si occupa di
silenzio. Ma i reportage che i venti giovani professionisti dello IED, provenienti da diverse parti del Mondo,
hanno creato, hanno fornito una prospettiva inusuale, chiara e nuova della regione, delle persone che
vi abitano e dei problemi della vita quotidiana. Nel suo insieme, il risultato di questa missione IED in
Portogallo è un contenuto comunicativo diversificato, forte e potente sulle questioni innescate dalla
desertificazione e le soluzioni più innovative, non solo per la Regione afflitta, ma anche e almeno per la
regione mediterranea.

As recognized by the UNCCD, desertification and land degradation in arid, semi-arid and dry sub-humid
areas are global problems that adversely affect rural development, land use, water resources, forest
and agricultural activities, and require a global response through concerted efforts to eradicate poverty
and hunger and promote health and well-being on the populations of affected areas. This means that
combating desertification and the effect of droughts requires policies that inter alia link land use, food
security and livelihoods to the goals of sustainable development. In particular special actions are needed
for the development, deployment and diffusion of technologies, including the sharing and scaling up best
practices and lessons learned in approaches undertaken at all levels to combat desertification such as
sustainable agricultural practices, and conservation and rehabilitation of vegetation cover, with appropriate
support on traditional practices and local knowledge.
In this context, the Portuguese National Action Program to Combat Desertification (NAPCD), adopted in
June 1999, have recognized as strategic objectives: (i) Conservation of soil and water; (ii) Fix population
in rural areas; (iii) Recovery of areas affected and the most threatened by desertification; (iv) Raise public
awareness of desertification issues; (v) Making the fight against desertification an integral part of general
and sectorial policies, special on rural development.
Considering the above mentioned objectives, when around and about the World Day to Combat
Desertification in 2008 (17 June), the Liaison Office in Rome of the UNCCD Secretariat have proposed
that the IED (Istituto Europeo di Design) of Turin should develop a photographic mission on the theme
of desertification in Portugal. It was proposed and adopted a large cross cutting journey of ten days (17
to 27 June 2008) on the East Algarve and Alentejo – municipalities of Almodôvar, Alcoutim, Mértola,
Castro Verde, Serpa, Moura, Mourão and Barrancos - one of the european regions most affected by
desertification. Here it was not only possible to see and touch the local landscapes, the flora and fauna
biodiversity, but also to talk and contact with the resident populations, from the older to the youngest
people, and with the institutions, public or from the civil society, that are developing programmes,
projects and actions to create new opportunities and new hopes.
Desertification is a silent phenomenon and matter. Also photography lives and deals with the silence. But
the reportages that the twenty young professionals of the IED, coming from different parts of the World,
have made is an uncommon, clear and fresh view of the region, the people living there and the problems
of the day life. The global product of this IED mission in Portugal has a diversified, strong and powerful
communicative content on desertification questions and innovative solutions, not only for the Region
touched, but also and at least for the Mediterranean region.

“La desertificazione del nostro pianeta peggiora ogni anno e guadagna sempre più terreno rispetto
alle aree verdi, provocando in alcune zone, come conseguenza principale, oltre alla perdita di fertilità
del terreno e alla diminuzione della qualità della vita, l’abbandono della propria terra da parte della
popolazione. ”Siamo partiti da questa riflessione quando abbiamo deciso di scegliere l’argomento
per la tesi del corso triennale di Fotografia dell’anno accademico 2007/2008 e abbiamo individuato
per la nostra indagine alcune aree interne del Portogallo, l’Alentejo e l’Algarve in particolare: vaste
zone ad alto grado di deterioramento del suolo e della vegetazione ma soprattutto territori ormai
semi abbandonati soprattutto dai giovani. È un argomento forte che ci riguarda, che ci ammonisce
e richiama tutti alla responsabilità e che ha permesso ai fotografi di sviluppare il proprio lavoro
partendo proprio da se stessi. Se è vero che “perché un lavoro sia convincente bisogna che il
fotografo ne faccia parte”, questa si è rivelata una buona opportunità. Dai progetti realizzati si evince
che la bontà di questi lavori non è solamente frutto di una importante esperienza visiva ma anche
e soprattutto della progettualità, dell’attenta osservazione e analisi dei luoghi, del rapporto con la
gente, oltre che della conoscenza e dell’utilizzo delle innumerevoli possibilità di linguaggio della
fotografia contemporanea.

The desertification of our planet grows worse every year and gains more ground compared to the
verdant areas. As a main consequence of this, certain locations in addition to soil fertility erosion and
a reduced quality of life, are also seeing their land abandoned by its population.
We took this issue as our starting point when we decided to chose the thesis subject for the third
year Photography students attending 2007/2008 academic year and we thus singled out a few
areas of the interior of Portugal for our investigation, essentially the Alentejo and Algarve regions
in particular: vast areas with a high degree of both soil and vegetation deterioration but most
poignantly a land that has been almost completely abandoned by the young population. It’s a
powerful issue that concerns us all, warning us and reminding us of our duties, and which enabled
the photographers to develop their work starting from their own perspective. If it is correct to say
that “for a work to be convincing the photographer must be a part of it”, then this turned out to be a
great opportunity.
From the projects produced one can clearly establish that the quality of the work is not just the result
of a particularly important visual experience but has much to do with the nature of the project,
the careful observation and the analysis of the areas, the relationships with people, as well as a
good understanding and exploitation of the endless possibilities the language of contemporary
photography provides.

Leggiamo su Wikipedia che Desertificazione è “il processo di degradazione del suolo causato da
numerosi fattori, tra cui variazioni climatiche e attività umane”. Dietro questa definizione si nasconde
un fenomeno che tocca direttamente circa 250 milioni di persone mettendone in pericolo oltre un
miliardo per i drammatici risvolti economici e sociali: paesi poveri, abbandonati, desolati, dove le
popolazioni colpite sono costrette a vere e proprie migrazioni.
We learn from Wikipedia that Desertification is “the process of soil degradation caused by a number
of different factors, including climate variations and human activities.” This definition hides a reality
that directly affects approximately 250 million people and threatens over a billion due to the
dramatic economic and social implications it carries with it: poor, desolate, abandoned countries
where vast sections of the population is forced to embark in major migrations.
L’Istituto Europeo di Design di Torino, durante l’anno accademico 2007/2008, ha deciso di
intraprendere una nuova sfida con un progetto che ha portato gli studenti del terzo anno del corso
triennale di Fotografia, guidati dall’UNCCD (United Nations Convention to Combact Desertification)
nei territori portoghesi dell’Alentejo e dell’Algarve per documentare con le immagini la realtà di
quelle regioni, luoghi pesantemente colpiti dalla piaga della desertificazione e in cui sono in atto gli
interventi per fronteggiare il fenomeno. In quest’occasione i giovani fotografi sono stati chiamati ad
esprimere non soltanto l’abilità tecnica appresa durante il percorso formativo ma, attraverso un vero
e proprio cammino introspettivo, ognuno ha avuto la possibilità di raccontare le proprie emozioni
e di farle trasparire attraverso le fotografie. Sono immagini che vanno oltre il racconto visivo di
un territorio, sono immagini che osservano ed analizzano in profondità le crepe di un Paese, che
guardano con sensibilità e delicatezza nella vita della gente, cogliendo le loro debolezze ma anche la
loro solitudine.
The Istituto Europeo di Design of Turin, during the academic year 2007/2008, decided to accept
a new challenge with a project that led students of the third year of the three year photography
course, led by the UNCCD (United Nations Convention to Combact Desertification), into the
Portuguese territories of the Alentejo and Algarve to document the reality of these regions through
photographic images. These areas that have been heavily hit by the plague of desertification and a
whole series of measures have been introduced to try and combat the phenomenon. On this occasion
the young photographers were not only required to demonstrate the technical skills they had learned
during their training but more importantly, through their own very personal journey of introspection,
they each had the opportunity of expressing their own emotions revealed through the photographic
medium. These images go beyond a simple visual account of a territory, they are images that
observe and analyse in great depth the harrowing furrows that have opened up in the Country,
taking a very sensitive and delicate approach to the lives of the people in the area, capturing their
weaknesses as well as their solitude.
Spero che tutti, sfogliando le pagine di questo catalogo, possano comprendere le molteplici
sfaccettature di un problema tanto attuale quanto complesso. È una questione che obbliga ad una
riflessione e un’assunzione di responsabilità verso il mondo in cui viviamo. Oltre a ringraziare l’UNCCD,
in particolare Lúcio Pires do Rosário che si è adoperato per guidarci in questa esperienza, un grazie
particolare va a Enzo Obiso, coordinatore del Corso Triennale di Fotografia sempre attento e presente,
e ai venti studenti, perché è soprattutto grazie alla loro sensibilità e alle loro capacità tecniche se

I hope that everyone, in flicking through the pages of this catalogue may understand the numerous
facets of a problem that is as topical as it is complex. It’s a question that compels us to reflect and
take responsibility for the world we live in. In addition to thanking the UNCCD and Lucio Pires do
Rosario in particular who bent over backwards to guide us during this experience, a very special
thanks goes to Enzo Obiso, the coordinator of the three year Photography course who was always
very attentive and present, and to the twenty students, because it is mainly thanks to their

Questo progetto si pone come obiettivo la sensibilizzazione
dell’opinione pubblica sul problema della desertificazione
in Portogallo, in particolar modo nelle regioni dell’Algarve
e dell’Alentejo dove i centri abitati superano raramente il
migliaio di presenze. In tali condizioni, mutuate certamente
dalla povertà del territorio, chi ne ha l’opportunità “fugge”
verso le grandi città, andando così incontro ad una sorta di
desertificazione umana. Ho quindi affiancato ad immagini di
paesaggio quelle di ritratti di persone comuni cercando di dare
un volto, una presenza, a luoghi che suggeriscono l’assenza.

This project aims to raise the awareness of public opinion on
the problem of desertification in Portugal. Particularly in the
regions of the Algarve and the Aletejo where villages rarely
number more than a thousand inhabitants. In these conditions,
undoubtedly due to the poverty of the area, anyone who has
the opportunity “flees” towards the larger cities, and the area
therefore faces a form of human desertification. I therefore
wanted to put landascape images alongside portraits of
normal people living in the area in an attempt to lend a face, a
presence, to places that suggest absence.

Nell’installazione ricerca fotografica e video vanno di pari passo:
un’unione e un fondersi di due concetti. Le immagini fotografiche dei
piccoli centri abitati, privi della figura umana, diventano emblema
dell’assenza, della sospensione e del silenzio. Nel video, invece,
protagonista è il vento e la sua azione sulla natura. Nodo centrale è
la velocità avvolgente che va scontrandosi su cielo, erba e acqua. Un
moto poetico di luce e buio caratteristico delle regioni visitate.

In the installation, photographic and video research go hand in hand:
a joining and merging of two concepts. The photographic images
of small inhabited villages, devoid of human presence, become an
emblematic representation of absence, suspension and silence. In
the video, on the other hand, the main character is the wind and its
action on nature. The central core is the all-embracing speed that
careens against the sky, the grass, the water. A poetic motion of light
and darkness typical of the areas we have visited.

Desolation hovers over ever
repeating landscapes, bare and
monochrome, as it does over the
village streets, the whitewashed
plaster and the worn faces of
the characters we meet. Both
“inside” and “outside the walls”
of the towns one breathes the
same atmosphere of fatigue,
oppressive heat and dead calm.
Even the dogs seemed to have got
the picture, and lie sprawled out
and motionless in the heat, as if
awaiting death.

SAUDADE
A journey not so much into
any geographical desert as into
a desert of people, of souls.
Abandoned and desolate villages
that try to fight loneliness and
decadence. Houses boarded up
and forgotten have become the
realm of spiders and their pals.
Everything is strenuously fighting
not to be forgotten, everything has
a past, experience, a tale to tell.
Everything is ready to be reborn (to
relive a flourishing past), it would
only take a little water, a little life
that right now is nothing but a
number, an individual lost in the
streets of a vast world that only
here, in his own home, could truly
become a Person.
SAUDADE
Un viaggio non in un deserto geografico bensì in un deserto di persone, di anime. Villaggi abbandonati e
desolati che cercano di combattere contro la solitudine e la decadenza. Case chiuse e dimenticate sono
diventate regno di ragni e loro compagni. Tutto lotta strenuamente per non essere dimenticato, tutto
ha un passato, un vissuto, una storia da raccontare. Tutto è pronto per rinascere, (per rivivere uno ieri
rigoglioso,) basterebbe soltanto un po’ d’acqua, un po’ di vita che per ora resta un numero, un individuo
perso per le strade del vasto mondo che solo qui, a casa sua, potrebbe diventare davvero Persona.

Vasti campi desertificati che sembrano
non ospitare vita umana, innumerevoli
pini marittimi, l’uomo che afferma la sua
presenza attraverso il seme che ha piantato,
attraverso il segno che ha lasciato.
Ecco alcune tracce dell’uomo dunque,
ormai fossilizzate, raccolte principalmente,
e volutamente, in fomato verticale, come
se il segno fotografato lasciato dall’uomo
divenisse lo stesso uomo che ha lasciato il
segno. Ecco a voi il ritratto di quest’uomo, a
volte amorevolmente premuroso e protettivo,
a volte spietato immemore e ingrato.

Vast desertified fields which seem unsuitable
for human life, countless umbrella pines,
man restating his presence through the
seeds that he has sown, through the signs
he has left. Here are a few traces of man
then, now fossilized, mainly collected, and
wishfully so, in a vertical elongation, as if
the photographic sign left by man becomes
the man who has left the sign behind. Here
is the portrait of that man, at times lovingly
caring and protective, at times pitilessly
thoughtless and ungrateful.

Da quarant’anni l’Istituto Europeo di Design opera nel campo della Formazione e della Ricerca, nelle discipline
del Design, della Moda, delle Arti Visive e della Comunicazione. Oggi è un Network Internazionale con sedi a
Milano, Roma, Torino, Venezia, Madrid, Barcellona e San Paolo del Brasile, che organizza corsi triennali postdiploma, corsi di aggiornamento e formazione permanente, corsi di formazione avanzata e Master post-laurea.
Scopo dell’Istituto Europeo di Design è dare ai giovani professionisti del Design, della Moda, delle Arti Visive
e della Comunicazione, conoscenze e strumenti efficaci per rispondere alle richieste del mondo del lavoro:
una Cultura del Progetto e della Comunicazione che li accompagni per tutta la vita. La sede di Torino, attiva
dal 1989, ospita oltre 900 studenti all’anno e attua una metodologia didattica fondata sul collegamento tra
sapere e saper fare e su lezioni teoriche unite a workshop ed esercitazioni, sia all’interno dei laboratori sia
legati ai progetti concreti commissionati da aziende e realtà di mercato. Il corpo docente, costituito da esperti
e professionisti dei diversi settori, garantiscono un contatto diretto con le realtà imprenditoriali più significative
a livello locale e nazionale. Ogni anno è caratterizzato da un fitto calendario di eventi e manifestazioni volti
a dare visibilità ai risultati dell’attività didattica, e creando legami forti con Enti, Istituzioni locali, Media e
Aziende. La sede di Torino, in linea con una precisa scelta di Gruppo, presenta eventi legati all’ambito del
“sociale”, al fine di contribuire alla sensibilizzazione collettiva e dare un sostegno concreto alle diverse
necessità in quest’ambito.

For fourty years, the Istituto Europeo di Design has been operating in the fields of Education and Research in
the disciplines of Design, Fashion, Visual Arts and Communication. Today it is an international network with
seats in Milano, Roma, Torino, Venezia, Madrid, Barcelona and São Paulo in Brazil, that organises three year
post high school diploma courses, refresher courses, permanent catalogue courses, advanced courses and postgraduate Masters degree courses.
The scope of the Istituto Europeo di Design is in fact, to offer young professionals working in the fields of
Fashion, Design, Visual Arts and Communication, the most efficacious tools necessary to answer the demands
of the production world: a project and communication culture that will accompany them throughout their
careers. IED Turin, operating from 1989, hosts more than 900 students every year and puts into effect
a didactic methodology based on the bond between knowing and knowing how to do and the fusion of
theorical lessons and practical workshop. The teaching staff, made of professionals and experts in the different
areas, grant a direct contact with the most relevant companies on a both local and national level. Every year
is characterised by a rich calendar of events that allow to put on show students creative projects and creating
new relationship with Institutions, media and companies. IED Turin, according to a specific network choice,
