hen conditions change, design must too. And when
the subject at hand is open spaces aboard a superyacht, the whole concept of “outdoor” takes on a
very different meaning from the shore-bound one of, say, a villa
garden. The setting is different to start with: aboard a yacht you
have an endless, undefined horizon that’s blue, blue, blue. A
kind of photographic set or backdrop that really does allow the
designer to give his or her imagination free rein. If the only parameter involved is the style of the boat, the choices are even
broader. For this reason and, of course, because of the thirst for
technological and stylistic progress that characterises this particular furnishing segment, the outdoor furnishing area is being
regarded with growing interest by owners and designers alike.
Onboard furnishing choices these days are influenced by a
change in the confines of living as the likes of fold-out hatches,
large picture windows and swathes of glass create a very direct
link between inside and outside, between private and communal areas. The result is that we’re finding more and more outdoor
furnishings that look like a natural extension of the indoor space.

n presenza di condizioni diverse, differente
è anche l’approccio progettuale. Quando si
parla di spazi aperti su un grande yacht, l’idea
di outdoor comporta prerogative differenti da
quelle proprie di un ambiente terrestre, come
ad esempio il giardino di una villa. Perché
diverso è ciò che è intorno: un orizzonte libero
e indefinito, virato quasi uniformemente al blu/
azzurro, che funziona come un set fotografico
e lascia al designer la massima libertà di
interpretazione. Se dunque l’unico parametro
con cui confrontarsi è rappresentato dallo
stile dell’imbarcazione, la possibilità di scelta
tipologica e formale si amplifica. Per questa
ragione e per la costante ricerca tecnologica e
stilistica che caratterizza questo settore
del mobile, il panorama dell’arredo outdoor
è guardato con sempre maggiore interesse
da armatori e designer.
Oggi sulla barca a influenzare le scelte d’arredo è
piuttosto un mutamento dei confini dell’abitare,
poiché le varie dimensioni del vivere a bordo
tendono a compenetrarsi: portelloni abbattibili,
grandi finestre vetrate, trasparenze creano infatti
un filo diretto tra interno ed esterno, tra spazi
privati e collettivi. Su uno yacht, dunque, in e out
tendono a relazionarsi e sempre più troviamo
soluzioni d’arredo destinate al plein air che

sembrano una naturale estensione dello spazio
interno. Segnale anche di una rinnovata, salutare
voglia di vivere all’aria aperta, con soddisfazione
di molti designer amanti del mare (e della vela
in particolare) per i quali trascorrere ore in
navigazione all’interno, magari rinfrescati dall’aria
condizionata, resta un atteggiamento abbastanza
incomprensibile.
L’outdoor design ha dunque una matrice
riconducibile alla condivisione degli ambienti,
alla trasversalità tra spazi personali e famigliari,
alla valorizzazione del rapporto uomo-natura.
Relazioni importanti, in grado di migliorare
il benessere e la qualità della vita, che
oggi sembrano essere tenute in particolare
considerazione dai vari brand del settore. La
produzione di serie, certamente influenzata
dalla difficile situazione dei mercati, sembra
infatti indirizzarsi verso valori più solidi, che si
riassumono in un design durevole, sostenibile,
autentico ma che non rinuncia alla ricerca. Così
troviamo, accanto a materiali tradizionali come
il legno, teak in primis, intrecci in fibre naturali e
sintetiche di grande resistenza molto utilizzate
in sedie e poltroncine ma anche negli schienali
degli imbottiti, alluminio che alleggerisce
le basi e le strutture, nuovi rivestimenti specifici
per l’outdoor fino a tempi recenti confinati
negli interni, come il velluto. Anche le
imbottiture sono di nuova generazione; quelle
idropassanti (che lasciano defluire l’acqua)
permettono per esempio di ottenere cuscinature
di eccezionale morbidezza.

This is also a very welcome sign of a renewed desire to actually
experience the outdoor life, something being embraced wholeheartedly by many sea and sailing-enamoured designers who
previously struggled to comprehend owners that wanted to
spend hours underway hiding in their air-conditioned interiors
rather than experiencing all that was on offer on deck.
Outdoor design is now about the transverse nature of personal
and family spaces and fostering the relationship between man
and nature. Both very important factors that can have a major
impact on well-being and quality of life of those aboard, in
themselves issues very dear to the hearts of many yards. Greatly
influenced by the challenging market conditions, the production boat sector seems to be focusing on more solid values
such as durable, sustainable, authentic design that doesn’t,
however, turn its back on sophistication. And so alongside traditional materials such as wood (most notably teak), we were
seeing very hard-wearing woven natural and synthetic fibres

The furniture structures are lighter and the form takes shape around a sober, elegant base
d’arredo, oltre a sistemi di illuminazione molto
particolari; tutti elementi funzionali all’arredo
ma che qui diventano soprattutto creatori
d’atmosfera. Effettivamente più che di arredo
si può tranquillamente parlare di scenografia.
Prendiamo il caso del sun deck sul 62 metri
Adora di Benetti, con chaise longue circondate
da quinte in corian nero, una palestra con
attrezzature Technogym accerchiate da specchi
e una consolle dj per party all’aperto. O anche
lo stesso Candyscape di Isa, che apre questo
servizio: il tavolo da pranzo può accogliere fino
a 20 persone e tutti i suoi spazi all’aperto sono
corredati con fioriere, lanterne e cuscini
sparsi in quantità.
La tendenza a vivere
sempre più a contatto
con la natura sta inoltre
scardinando anche alcuni
punti che sembravano
capisaldi nel codice dell’arredamento nautico
e che segnavano quasi un confine tra vela e

being used not only for seating but also for backrests of upholstered furnishings. Aluminium is being used to lightened frames
and structures, and new outdoor-specific trims that until just
recently would have been confined to interiors, such as velvet.
New generation upholstery and padding materials, including
those that allow water to run off without soaking in, offer exceptionally soft cushioning.
The migration towards the al fresco deck spaces has opened
us up to a whole range not only of furnishings but other accessories, plus, of course, specific lighting systems. All are highly
functional elements but in this context are mostly used to create atmosphere. In fact, they aren’t so much about furnishing or
décor as scene setting and backdrop creation. Take, for example, the sun deck aboard Benetti’s 62-metre Adora where chaises longues are surrounded by black Corian screens and there’s
also a Technogym-equipped fitness area ringed with mirrors as
well as a DJ console for al fresco parties. Or ISA’s Candyscape,
at the beginning of this article: the dining table there can seat
up to 20 guests and all of her al fresco spaces are liberally dotted with plants, lanterns and cushions. This trend to spend time

aboard in more contact with nature has dramatically altered
certain rules, many of which had marked the confine between
sailing and motor craft. The Perini Navi Melek is, for example, a
56-metre whose bow lounge area includes two large chaises
longues, while the cockpit aboard the Alloy Yachts ketch Vertigo has freestanding furnishings. Neither are classic choices for
megayachts and even less so for sailing yachts.
Certain rituals and functions once predominantly the domain of
the interior are being redefined right now too. Meals are a good
example: they’re now not only being
eaten but also prepared on deck, thanks to al fresco galleys. The fly aboard the
megasailer Twizzle has a galley, barbecue and fridge all in very practical teak
units while Le Gypsy has the high-tech
Boffi K2 Block kitchen adapted for nautical use. Changes may be afoot but style and
sophistication never go out of fashion. •

Yachts, che nel pozzetto accoglie anche mobili
free standing: due scelte non comuni nel caso
di megayacht, ancor meno di barche a vela.
Anche alcuni riti e funzioni un tempo di
pertinenza prettamente indoor stanno per
essere ridisegnati. Un esempio? I pasti non solo
si consumano all’aperto ma qui oggi vengono
anche preparati, grazie alle cucine da esterni
che sempre più sono parte integrante della zona
living. Così avviene, con due stili diversi, sui fly
del megasailer Twizzle (con cucina, barbecue
e frigo racchiusi in razionali mobili in teak) e
di Le Gypsy, che ospita il tecnologico Blocco
Boffi K2, opportunamente adattato alle esigenze
nautiche. Ecco dunque una rassegna di mobili
outdoor, da portare a bordo, nel segno della
ricercatezza e dello stile. •
