Inoltre, l’intervista è un ottima attività per allenarsi a formulare domande utilizzando la seconda persona singolare (do you….?) e a riferire poi i risultati in terza persona singolare (he doesn’t play football). 5. Rationale The following learning unit is specifically designed for students attending the third year of Middle School (scuola secondaria di primo grado). The following lesson focuses on sports, a topic which most students are interested in. My personal experience has proven to me that it is a topic which generates a great deal of enthusiasm among students. Sport has always fascinated the masses due to its unique aptitude of combining people’s need for physical activity and recreation with the need for socialising and competition. Wherever there is sport, there is passion: everybody has come across this expression and knows that this is not a mere saying but, in my opinion, simply the truth. Through this learning unit students will also learn more about the so-called Rainbow Nation, its people and its past, thanks to the autobiographical account of my childhood in this country. 7. The lesson plan Title The school The class CEFR Level General purpose Reasons motivating the choice of the topic Learning objectives Lo sport come percorso educativo: una proposta di un’unità di apprendimento di lingua inglese. The following learning unit is suitable for students attending the third year of a Middle School (scuola secondaria di primo grado). The class is composed of 20 students (11 females, 9 males) aged 13 to 14. By the middle of the third year students generally achieve the proficiency level A2 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. The purpose of the following learning unit is to motivate students to learn English in a fun environment. The reasons for choosing sports as the topic of my learning unit are as follows: - motivation: this project allows students to explore a topic which is of interest to many students. Sports are a shared cultural passion that can bring students together and help them develop a positive attitude towards language learning as a tool which will enable them to achieve their goals in their future (travelling, living and working in a foreign country); - promotion of culture and values: sports can bring students together across the divisions of region, race, and religion in athletic competition that is a powerful source of national pride and solidarity. Through international sport events (Football World Cup, Olympic Games), we see the proliferation of messages of international understanding, cultural tolerance and mutual respect; - 2010 Football World Cup in South Africa: since the 2010 World Cup is around the corner I thought I might fit the upcoming event into the learning unit. By sharing my childhood memories of South Africa with my students, this learning unit will allow them to gain some background information about South Africa’s recent history under apartheid and the post apartheid years. Students will - gain awareness of the role of sport as a powerful tool for community 10 Lo sport come percorso educativo development, intercultural exchange and communication; learn vocabulary relevant to sports; develop social skills and interaction skills by working together in a group activities; - develop both their receptive (reading and listening) and productive skills (speaking and writing) in order to communicate effectively with a variety of audiences and for different purposes; - use the Internet to collect information about South Africa; - be engaged with authentic materials and cultural investigation. Third-year students study English three hours a week. The following Time learning unit is designed to take two one-hour lessons (60 minutes each) management and one two-hour lesson (120 minutes) plus extra time for homework (approx. 2 hours). The last session of the learning unit is carried out in the computer lab. Lesson setting Students develop both their receptive (reading and listening) and productive Skills involved skills (speaking and writing) in order to communicate effectively with a variety of audiences and for different purposes. The learning unit is based on a: Methodological - communicative approach: this lesson is based on the notion of the approach students as communicators, naturally endowed with the ability to learn languages. It seeks to provide students with the target language system in classroom interaction and in real-world situations; - ludic approach: the lesson is based on a ludic approach which is an appropriate method which stimulates, motivates and provides challenge for learning; - cooperative learning approach: students are split up in groups and work together in order to achieve the same aim. Students who cooperate have more positive attitudes towards studying and are more self-confident. Cooperative learning is built on the concept of peer collaboration and this approach is very successful in language learning. Moreover, cooperation promotes cohesiveness, i.e. when students work together they help each other and do not care about their cultural background. The interviewers have to interview a fellow classmate using the question prompts in order to find out about his/her sports interests and abilities. The interviewers have to take notes and then report the answers to the rest of the class. All the students have to take the couch potato test in order The couch potato to find out how much time they spend idle time sitting and watching television. Before handing out the worksheet the test teacher writes the word “couch potato” on the blackboard. Some of the students will probably look slightly puzzled and not know what the expression means. Worksheet 2 is then handed out: it represents a “potato family” sitting in front of a television. This will certainly have immediate effect and comments of “Aaaah” and “I see” reverberate around the room! Once they have understood the general topic the class reads the questions without answering and tries to find the new words. When the questions are clear the students answer them and after this the results are debated. The sports quiz Students work in pairs and test their knowledge of sports by answering the questions of the multiple-choice quiz. INT TS QZ By interviewing fellow classmates students learn about the interview process and practice this technique. Through this activity students exercise asking questions and become familiar Worksheet 1 with note-taking e reporting information. They therefore enhance Exercise 1.a. both their oral and written skills. Interviews are important as they showcase communication skills, aid in formulating questions and make activities more interesting. Worksheet 2 Language learning is hard work. Effort is required at every Exercise 1.b. moment and must be maintained over a long period of time. This activity encourages learners to sustain their interest as the test is easy and it focuses on their personal habits and practices. Tests and quizzes are highly motivating and loved by students as they are amusing. They are easily adjusted for age, level, and interests. Quizzes have are very effective as warm-up activities and when Worksheet 3 introducing new vocabulary. They bring in relaxation and fun for Exercise 2.a. students and thus help them learn and retain new words more easily. Second, quizzes usually involve friendly competition and they keep learners interested. This creates the motivation for learners of English to get involved and to participate actively in the learning activities. Third, quizzes bring real world context into the classroom and enhance students’ use of English in a flexible, communicative way. 12 Lo sport come percorso educativo 10 End of first session After the quiz students are asked to complete worksheet 4 for homework. Students start doing the exercises during the final part of the first session. HW Worksheet 4+5 Exercise 2b+c+d+e For homework, students have to complete a series of vocabulary exercises. Teaching vocabulary is an important part of teaching foreign languages: it helps students to improve and extend their vocabulary. Moreover, the wide choice of a word causes the language to be flexible, it assists in avoiding repetition and monotony of speech, and it gives the possibility to express ideas more exactly and understandably. It is important to contextualize vocabulary when teaching it to students: teaching vocabulary in context is significantly more beneficial in helping students recall the meanings of the vocabulary items than teaching vocabulary through mere wordlists. Presenting students with long lists of vocabulary out of context will not assist them in bringing meaning to these words the next time they encounter them. The worksheet the students have to complete for homework does not only contain matching exercises but it also contains useful exercises which help students strengthen their memory of vocabulary in an active and productive way. Exercise 2.b and 2.d., for example, require students to apply sports vocabulary to real-life communication situations. SECOND SESSION (60 MINUTES) – SPORTS BEYOND BORDERS: THE OLYMPIC GAMES 15 Homework check During the first 15 minutes homework is checked in class HWC in order to ensure students have completed required work in a timely manner. 30 Reading comprehension: The Skier Students read the story of a Jamaican boy who loves snow and dreams of becoming a gold-medal-winning skier at the Winter Olympic Games. RC 15 Olympic Games Quiz Students work in pairs and test their knowledge of the Olympic Games by answering the questions of the quiz. QZ End of second session For homework students are asked to complete worksheet 8 (crossword puzzle on the Summer Olympic Games). HW/ CW - Worksheet 4+5 Exercise 2b+c+d. - Reading comprehension is a crucial learning skill for students to Worksheet 6 master. The suggested text was downloaded from the website of the British Council. It tells the story of a Jamaican boy who loves snow and dreams of going to the Winter Olympic Games. The text is not complex. It is a good activity to introduce the topic of the Olympic Games. The reading comprehension is followed by a 'true or false' quiz. Quizzes usually involve friendly competition and they keep Worksheet 7 learners interested. This increases motivation for learners and makes students participate actively in the learning activities Worksheet 8 Crossword puzzles are a fun way to practice spelling, reading comprehension and to reinforce vocabulary. We will now read the text together. Afel was only a very small boy when he first saw snow. But it wasn’t real snow that he saw. No, there was no real snow where he lived. He saw the snow in a picture book. The book had lots of pictures of children playing in big white fields. He asked his mother, “What are those white fields?” and his mother laughed and said “That’s snow!”. She tried to explain to him what snow was, but Afel didn’t really understand. Sometimes there was rain where he lived, but not very much, so it was very difficult for him to understand what this cold, ice rain that his mother described was. It didn’t matter. Even when he was only a very small boy, Afel was already in love with snow. He dreamed about snow all the time, trying to imagine how it really was. He thought of big white fields. He thought of the big, heavy clothes the children playing in the snow wore. He thought about feeling cold. He dreamed of being able to fly across the white fields of snow. Then, when Afel was twelve years old, the next thing happened. One day he was watching the TV at his uncle’s house. His uncle had a big new TV, with all the satellite channels. Afel was watching one of the satellite channels, and a programme came on, and the programme was full of snow. Lots and lots of it. And not only snow – there were people flying across the snow. They looked like strange animals, like fantastic birds. They had hats which covered all their heads and big goggles over their eyes. They wore brightly-coloured clothes. And on their feet, they had things that looked like strange shoes. 4 Source: The Skier by Chris Rose, available on the British (http://www.britishcouncil.org/learnenglish-central-stories-the-skier.htm). Council’s website 23 “What are those?” he asked his uncle excitedly. “Skis,” replied his uncle, “And those people are called skiers.” Afel was in love. Here was the snow, and here were people who were flying across the snow. It was just like one of his dreams. It was perfect. At that moment, he decided. he wanted to be a skier. He asked his uncle what the programme was. “The Winter Olympics,” said his uncle. “It’s like the normal Olympics, but for sports where you need snow –skiing, ice skating, bobsleigh, those sorts of things. They have it every four years.” Afel found out that the next Winter Olympics was in Vancouver in Canada, in 2010. “Perfect,” he thought. “Enough time for me to become a brilliant skier. Then I’ll go to the Winter Olympics, and win the gold medal for skiing.” “But there’s no snow here!” people told him. “Where are you going to ski?” Afel didn’t care. He made himself a pair of skis from two pieces of wood. He tied them to his feet and practised skiing holding two sticks in his hands. At first he couldn’t move, but he practised and practised and practised until he could move quite quickly across the sand or the earth where he lived. He tried to fly down the hills like the people on tv, but he couldn’t. He could only move slowly. “Never mind,” he thought. “It’s a start...” “How will you go to the Olympics?” people asked him. “Our country doesn’t even have a team that goes to the Winter Olympics. Why don’t you do up athletics instead? You don’t need lots of expensive equipment to practice. Our country is very good at athletics. We have lots of runners. And every time we win lots of medals at the Olympics. But no skiing, no.” Afel didn’t care. He found that Jamaica had sent a bobsleigh team to the Olympics a few years ago. “If Jamaica have a bobsleigh team,” he thought, “then our country can have a skier.” So every night, out in the middle of the desert, Afel now practises skiing down sand dunes. He dreams that the yellow sand and brown earth of the desert is the white white snow of the mountains he saw on the television. He dreams that the yellow sand and brown earth are as gold as the medal he will bring home with him, when he is the world champion. By Chris Rose 3.c.
